I don't own Mummies Alive! or any of the characters, except for Evelyn and Ratshet.
So, in the previous chapter I said i wouldn't post soon but here I am. I realized that many of the first chapter was similar to the show so I decided to post the second episode, where Eve's experience starts to diverge from Preslay's. When they were just introduced to the situation on the first episode, it makes sense that both of them had similar reactions. Now, however, Eve knows the mummies for some days and is adapting to her new reality on her own way. Eve's journey won't be dramastically diferent from the original, the basic plots of the episodes will happen similar to the original.
About the fight scenes, I repeat, as Eve isn't envolved in them they don't change from the original so I don't think it's necessary to describe them here.
This chapter is based on the episode "Pack to the future", in canon this is episode 3 but i decided to swap the two so that chapter three will be about "Sleep walk like an Egyptian" and then I'm planing to keep in the episodes in the original order.
Thanks for reading this story and please leave your opinion when you finish. I am also open to suggestions and requests. At some point i will have to create a new plot to the chapters as the series never had a conclusion.
Episode 2: Tricking the trackers
Eve woke up the next morning still feeling tired. She didn't remember being this exhausted after a full night of sleep before, also her muscles were hurting a little. Weird.
She got up, took a shower and prepared to go to school, as usual. She walked to the kitchen to see her mother already getting ready for work, for some reason the older woman looked exhausted too. As she got some milk to pour it into an empty cup, Eve checked the clock in the wall, it was 6:30. Her mom usually didn't left home to work until at least 7:30.
"Mom? Why are you so early today?" Eve asked as she took a sip of milk.
"I have a lot of work today. The sarcophagus from the Ratshet's exhibition were stolen in the transportation."
In her shock, Eve almost choked on the milk as the memories of the last day washed over her. She really was the reincarnation of a princess?! She didn't forgot or concluded the last day was a dream but after sleeping everything felt so... unreal to her.
"Sweetie, are you okay?!" Amanda exclamed as she got closer to check on her daughter.
Another realization hit Eve: she was the one that stole the Truck! Well, she and the others but she was the only normal human involved. She was the reason why her mother was so exhausted this morning!
At that moment, Eve felt deep shame on herself. Granted, there wasn't other options. She had to help her friends get their sarcophagus back but that didn't made her feel any less guilty!
"...Sweetie, are you okay?" Amanda repeated to her daughter, she didn't had an answer the first time. Eve was just staring at her with wide eyes for five minutes, but then she snapped back to reality.
"I-I'm ok, mom! I'm just surprised the museum was robbed twice the same day." Eve said, trying to make an excuse for her surprise.
"That makes the two of us. First, they steal the mummies and then they steal the sarcophagus? That doesn't make any sense. Why don't seal both at the same time?" Amanda questioned. She had been trying to find sense in the thieves actions, it kept her from sleeping all night.
Mom, you wouldn't believe even if I told you... Eve thought but would never tell Amanda out loud. She had to find a way to keep her mother from making too many questions.
"Mom, you don't have to find an explanation. Just let the cops do their work and focus yourself on fixing the museum. It's not your fault that some crazy thieves stole the artifacts." Eve rationalized.
"Actually it was. I was the one that suggested that we accepted Mr. Stones offer to pay for the Exhibition."
If only Amanda knew what he was really planing, she wouldn't feel so bad. Eve hoped she could keep her mom away from the wicked sorcerer.
"But what about Mr. Hepplewhite? He was responsable for the exhibition too." Eve argued.
"He had to go to the police today to check on his car. Someone stole it yesterday but the cops found it. Apparently nothing was broken but he wanted to be sure."
Eve had a flashback of the car chase from the last day. Nefertina did crash in a lot of things when they were after the truck.
"But you are right. I will try not to think to much about the thieves. Who knows? Maybe the cops will find them... they did find Mr. Hepplewhite's car." Amanda said, it sounded as she was trying to convince herself.
Amanda went to work after saying goodbye to her daughter, leaving Eve alone with her thoughts. The girl threw herself at the living room's sofa and shut her eyes. Many questions were on her mind. How were things going to work from now on? Would she be able to lie to her mother everyday? Could she keep her mother away from Mr. Stones? Hell, how would she able to protect herself against an 3500 years old sorcerer? She wouldn't live with constant vigilance from her friends... would she?
"Eve?"
Eve screamed at the voice, jumping to her feet and turning to see someone unexpected walking down the stairs.
"Nefertina! You almost gave me a heart attack!" Eve protests trying to calm down from her scare. "What are you doing here? How did you even get in?"
"Sorry. I got inside from your room's window, the others sent me to get you. We found somewhere to stay and wanted to show it to you." The mummy explained, as she sat down at the same chair from the previous day.
"I can't go now. I have school in some minutes. Can't I go later?" Eve reasoned.
"Rath said he wanted to talk to you about your studies." Nefertina explained as she tried to see how the chair worked.
"Really? He wants to know about 21 century school?" Eve rose an eyebrow at her, intrigued.
"He probably wants to know what you are studying. He was the one in charge of supervising Ratshet's studies and now your's too." Nefertina informed as she turned to look at the girl.
"... You mean that Rath wants to be my teacher?" She asks.
"All of us will be."
"What?"
"Each one of us were in charge of a part of Ratshet's training. I was teaching her how to drive a chariot. Rath was teaching her politics and basic magic. Ja-kal was training her in hunting. And Armon was responsable for self defense class."
Eve took a moment to absorb the new information before answering.
"Look, learning from you guys seem fine but I don't have time to learn all of that. I have school and I can't keep disappearing from home. Mom will eventually get suspicious, she is trying to figure it out who stole the artifacts by herself!"
Before Nefertina could answer, Eve noticed how many minutes had passed. She was already late for school.
"We will have to continue this later! I really have to go!" She said while picking her backpack and getting her keys, before turning to Nefertina again. "I will be back in six hours and than I can go with you!"
"Ok. I will be back when you return." She answered in time as the door shut and Eve run from the house. Nefertina looked around the room, and found some magazines in a bookcase. It said something about motorcycles. "Maybe I can wait a little before returning to the others..."
As the days went by Eve found herself wondering what normal was for her anymore. Her days consisted of waking up, going to school, visiting the mummies and trying to get home before her mother returned, she was still working to fix the mess in the museum.
School was fine. She was a regular student, not the best but her grades weren't a problem. Her only true worry was Walter, but for now he didn't ask why she looked more tired than normal. Hopefully he just thinks she is having more strange dreams.
Eve was informed that the mummies were living inside the Sphinx from the museum. The structure was hollow inside, so they could hide in there. The group spend some time finding some furniture to place there, most of it was thrown away recently by their previous owners and then fixed by Rath's magic. With that, Eve had some time to get to know her new friends better.
First there was Rath, the brains of the team. The only one that can cast spells, he uses the spirit of a cobra of fight. Eve also learned that Rath was once the Pharaoh Amenhotep's chief scribe and sorcerer. As Neferina had said, Rath was curious about Eve's studies. As they talked it was obvious that Rath belived in magic as logic. Physics, science and chemistry were just another form of magic to him. And if someone tried to get him to explain something from the modern era, he would always pretend to know what that person is taking about even if he had no ideia. That's Rath's weakness: most of the time he is too arrogant to ask for information.
Nefertina was very cool. She told Eve about some of their adventures in the past. Apparently, they did had some trouble hiding the fact that "Nefer" was a girl. There was one time that Ratshet pretended to need Nefer's help to keep "him" from swimming in the Nile with the others. Nefertina's love for chariots turned into love for modern vehicles. Eve was worried that the mummy would try to get close to another vehicle and end up breaking it. About her powers, her patron goddess is Bastet and she fights using her claws or whip. If Eve had to guess Nefertina's weakness, It would be her habit to do things without thinking first.
In Eve's eyes, Armon is a sweet gigant. Don't misunderstand, he can cause some serious damage but he is always very nice to Eve. Especially when she brings some snacks to him, the guy really liked to try new food. Eve didn't got the opportunity to ask how he lost his arm, she supposed that he probably lost it in a fight. She was more certain at that theory as he told her about some of his fights in the Pharaoh's army. Personally, she didn't liked to hear about the violent parts but she noticed that he was proud to talk about his battles so she let him talk. His patron is the ram deity Banebdjedet and he uses his golden arm to punch his adversaries. His weakness was obvious: food.
Than there is Ja-kal, the leader of the mummies is probably her least favorite. They had some nice moments but his overprotectiveness was overwelming. He even made a schedule so that at least one of them would be close to her while she gets to school or returns. Thanks to some arguments over that, Eve hadn't got the opportunity to know more about him as she knew of the others. The few facts that se figured out about him were that he wasn't good talking to people, he is almost always serious and worried about something. On the bright side, she was getting accustomed to his use of hunting terms. Horus the falcon-headed god was Ja-Kal's patron god and he uses his arrows against his enemies. Eve noted that he is hard to keep down, he took a direct shoot from Scarab and didn't stood down for long. His weakness? She didn't figured it out yet.
There is also Kahti, the cat. Eve really didn't like cats. They left fur everywhere, always scratch whatever is on their way and, for some reason, personally didn't like Eve. With that, she was surprised at how the cat became attached to her. During her visits, Kahti followed her around and asked for attention and belly rubs. Eve still didn't decided what to think of her. But the real problem was Ja-kal's reaction. He suggested that Eve brought Kahti to live at her house to keep an eye on her since the cat was small and wouldn't be noticed. When asked how would a cat be able to protect her, Ja-kal answered with one of this hunting phrases: "Even the smallest lion can hide sharp claws." Eve declined the offer, arguing that while at home she didn't needed protection. But deep inside, she knew it wasn't the end of it.
Some days passed since the incident on the museum. After having spent the last afternoon at the Sphinx teaching the mummies how TVs work, Eve felt drained. To her luck, school was canceled today because of an prank that ended up soiling the hallways. She would only return to classes next Monday.
"Time to get up" She was still huddled under her blankets when her mother started calling her from downstairs.
Her mother's voice was accompanied by barks from a dog, coming from outside the house. Eve grumbled as she heard the animal, he has been messing with her mother's garden the hole week. She tried to get rid of him but he always returns.
"I'm already up..." She mumbles, still sleepy.
"According to whom?" Her mother's voice sounded closer.
"Alright, I'm awake." Eve got up to see her mother walking inside of her room.
"Look out there and tell me what you see." Amanda asks as she walks to the window and opens it.
Eve obeys and sure enough, the dog was back. Barking next her mother precious garden.
"When did I ask for you to put that doggy off our flowerbed?" Amanda asks.
"I did! He just keeps coming back." Eve argues but her mother didn't seem to believe her.
"Do it today. I don't want that dog digging at my flowers while we are at Yusemitie." She said as she left the room.
Even as she had to got up and change to her daily clothes, Eve smiled. She was happy to go camping with her mom, she was the one that suggested it. After seeing how the "robbery" from the museum made her work harder, Eve suggested that Amanda needed a break. It took some days but Amanda managed to get the weekend off. It would be two days of mom and daughter bonding, no work, no school, no evil sorcerer and no mummies.
As Eve got downstairs to deal with the annoying dog, she debated on how to tell her friends about her plans of camping. With Ja-kal's overprotective behavior, Eve hesitated on informing him of her weekend travel. He probably wouldn't have a good reaction.
She soon got to the garden.
"I thought I gave gotten rid of you." She found herself telling the dog, who didn't even stopped barking to look at her. "Why do you keep coming back?! What's so special of this freaking..."
She trailed off as she saw something move from the corner of her eye. Something was hidden between the flowers. She crouched and gently push the flowers out of the way to see...
"Are you kidding me?!"
Back in the Sphinx, the mummies were watching some TV. Even after Eve tried to explain how it worked, they still kept their magic box theory. At that moment, they were watching the weather report.
"It looks like another nice day tomorrow but watch out for that early morning fam." Weather man informed the viewers.
"The magic box can see the future." Rath concluded.
As soon as he said that, the group heard the sound of heavy steps and noticed that Eve had arrived. Normally, she greeted them with a smile on her face. This time instead, she arrived in total silence as she had a death stare directed to one of them. On her arms was Kahti, who greeted the others with a meow.
"I thought I told you that I would not be keeping her." Eve finally said, breaking the silence. The anger was evident in her voice.
Knowing that she was taking to him, Ja-kal got up and walked to her, taking Kahti from her arms.
"I was just making sure you would be safe. Scarab can attack at any moment." He calmly explained, not at all bothered by her stare.
"If you hadn't noticed, I need some privacy! You guys keep escorting me everywhere! At least leave me alone at home!" Eve exclamed. To her, he was exaggerating.
He let out a sigh. He could see that she felt oppressed but in his mind that precisions were necessary, especially with what they had learned from the magic box last night. Eve had to know, maybe than she would understand.
"The situation changed. There a new danger that I haven't predicted." Ja-kal starts, getting Eve to calm down a little.
"... Really? What?" Eve asked.
"The magic box said that Apophis will soon swallow the disc of the sun and rah will hide his face. The world will be plunged into darkness until Aphophis spits the sun out again." He explains but it only made Eve feel confused. She had to rethink what he said to understand what he was talking about.
"...You must mean the eclipse." She concluded as she shrugs, thinking it wasn't a big deal. To her, he was only overacting. "Don't worry about it. It's just the moon covering the sun for a few moments. It's not dangerous. It's actually pretty cool."
Her guardian shakes his head.
"No. Terrible things happen when Rah hides his face. Scarab may strike as a scorpion in the darkness." Ja-kal warns before adding. "And We will be waiting."
Nefertina joins the conversation.
"We will watch your house. Follow you to school. Protect you." Nefertina states in a serious tone.
"What? Not you too!" Eve exclaims. She expected the others to be on her side, but it seems that's not the case as the next one to talk was Rath.
"Please understand, It's for your safety."
"You guys can't keep me under surveillance all day long!" Eve exclaims, before she continues taking without thinking first. "When I come back we can discuss about it but..."
"What do you mean by come back?"
Eve stopped. Ja-kal never interrupted her before... That was a first. And she didn't liked the tone on his voice. It reminded her of the tone her mother used when asking her about the flowers earlier.
"Well..." She hesitated before continuing. "I may have forgot to mention that I will be leaving to Yosemite with my mom for family bonding." What now sounded like a terrible ideia as her guardians stared at her with wide eyes.
"What?" They exclamed all together. Ratshet never let them on the dark about her plans, at least one of them were informed if she left the castle. Apparently, with Eve the case was different.
"It's not a big deal. Besides, Scarab will never get me. I will be far away!" Eve points out.
"Unprotected." Ja-kal adds.
"It's just two days!" She exclaims throwing her hands in the air in frustration. "Can't you guys at least give me that?!"
"Why didn't you told us sooner? We would have prepared something!" Ja-kal exclaims, to the others surprise, rising his tone of voice.
"Because I don't want to prepare anything! I just want two normal days with my mom! I have been trying to get her to get days off for days. She has been working non-stop because of the mess we made. Everyday I have to try to comfort her as her stupid boss puts all the blame on her. And the worst is that I have to lie and say that maybe things will get better and the artifacts will be recovered when I know that it won't happen! She went to all that stress and hard work because of that stupid exhibition and now I don't want her to even think about sand in the next days! It's my only chance to make it up to her and I won't let you guys ruin it!" She said storming off before they could answer.
The group stood frozen for some time. It's the first argument they had with their princess since they woke up. The sound of the TV was the only thing keeping the place not silent.
"I... er... am going to get something to eat." Armon's coping mechanism after discussing with someone he cared about was eating. So he walked to the refrigerator they installed the other day.
"...I am going to check and see on my scrolls if there is something we can use to keep an eye on her." Rath suggests before going to his room.
With that, it was only Nefertina and Ja-kal on the room.
"... I am just trying to protect her. What am I doing wrong?" He starts.
"She is a teenager, she wants freedom. All that surveillance is messing with her. Making her mad to think that she can't take care of herself." Nefertina points out.
"How do you know that?" He asks.
"I would if I were in her place." She admits.
"...In that case, we need at least to someone to watch over her without being noticed. Than we can keep an eye on her and don't make her mad." He concludes as he looks at the cat in his arms.
Nefertina rose an eyebrow at him, understanding what he was planing.
"Kahti was noticed last time. What makes you think it won't happen again?" She inquired.
"It's our best option."
They turned to see that Rath had returned with an amulet in the shape of an eye in his hands.
"The eye of Horus will let us see what she sees. We just have to give it to the princess." Rath tells them.
"No to the princess. To Kahti." Ja-kal decides.
"Is it wise to give such relic to a cat? I mean think about what she might do to the furniture."
"Princess Ratshet won't let us follow. This is the only way." Ja-kal would end with that but there was another option he wasn't sure was available yet. "... Unless we can give her the Eve of Ra."
"The Eye of Ra is not ready yet! I already told you that." Rath explains with a huff.
"But does it work?" Nefertina asks, crossing her arms.
"Well... Yes, but not entirely. I still haven't used all the enchantments from scroll the Pharaoh left."
"You can finish it later. Now we must make sure we will know if the princess will needs help during her travel." Ja-kal concludes. The amulet would be a precaution, just in case Kahti lost sight of Evelyn.
Before leaving with her mom Eve decided to check on the flowers, just to make sure the dog wouldn't return. As she was about to leave, the sound of something moving on the bushes made her look back.
Ja-kal was there. And she could imagine why.
"If you are going to say it's too dangerous again or that I can't go you are wasting your time." She warned.
"I am here to wish you a safe trip."
Eve didn't expect that answer.
"Really? You are going to leave me alone?"
"I will respect your decision even if I don't approve it."
"But...?" She asks, knowing there is more.
"But I want you to have something. Just in case you need us." Ja-kal shows her an especial amulet that he had brought with him.
"A neckless?"
"It's an amulet. The eye of Ra. Ratshet had one similar, she could use it to call us if she was in danger. Now you can do it too." He gives it to her.
"So, if I promise to wear the amulet all times will you leave me alone for the weekend?" She asks while analyzing the object in her hands.
"...yes." He debates for a second if he should tell her about Kahti but decides against it. If nothing happens and Kahti keeps hidden, Eve would never find out anyway.
"Ok. It's a deal." She put the necklace around her neck then hides it under her clothes. She didn't want her mom to ask about it.
"Evelyn let's go!" They hear Amanda calling from the car.
Eve turned to her friend.
"Thanks, Ja-kal. When I come back, I will be all yours." She promises with a smile on her face before walking to the car.
Seeing her so happy to be having free time with her mom made his unbeating heart squeeze with guilt. She probably just wanted some freedom before accepting her new role as reincarnated princess. He didn't want to lie to her. He turned to see Kahti appearing from between the bushes where she was hiding before Eve left.
"The girl means much to me. Watch over her." He asks.
The cat just meows at him before following her new mistress.
At the same time, Eve was on the car with her mom.
"I thought you said you had already taken care of the plants." Amanda says.
"Sorry, mom. I was just checking." Eve answers.
Nether of them noticed Kahti jumping into the back of the vehicle. She chose to hide between the backpacks.
"Yosemite, here we come!" Amanda exclaims as she starts driving.
The travel was uneventful. Eve and her mom talked more in those few hours than they had last week. It was like old times when her mom wasn't so occupied with her work.
After they were done taking silence settled in the car. As her mom was concentrating on the street, Eve's took another glance at her new amulet. She was analyzing the details on it. It made her remember how she snapped at her friends earlier. She didn't meant to but she needed some time alone. She needed to digest all that happened the last few days. She didn't had time to do it with her days consisting of school, her visits to the Sphinx and her few moments at home trying to keep the truth from her mother.
"What's that?" Her mom asks, bringing her back to reality. They had reached a traffic jam so her mother wouldn't have to keep looking at the road. Eve mentally slapped herself, her mother wasn't supposed to see the amulet.
"It's... a present. From a friend." She quickly explains. It wasn't a lie.
"Walter?" Her mom asks, remembering her daughter's childhood friend.
If she said "yes" there was the risk of her mother asking Walter if it really was from him so she decided to deny.
"No. It's from a friend that I made some time ago."
"Really? What's his name?"
"Ja-James. His name is James. He is an exchange student from Egypt." Now, that was a lie.
"Interesting. I would love to meet him someday." Amanda smiles.
"Sure..." Eve mumbles as she predicted that that talk would return to haunt her later.
The weekend didn't start as they expected. The beginning seemed nice, they managed to set up the tent without any problem but as soon as they were finished it started raining. It only got worse as it was raining more and more and they had to take refuge under their tent. Amanda had to run under the rain to get their sleeping bags from the car, not noticing the cat sleeping under it.
"I don't get it. The weather man said it would be sunny and warm." Amanda said as soon as she got back to the tent. She gave Eve her bag as she continued. "I told you it would help us bond. There is nothing like a shared misery to bring people together."
"This isn't so bad, mom..." Eve starts, trying to be positive. But reality proved her wrong as the tent collapsed because of the accumulated water on the top of it.
They had to adjust the tent again and by the time they were finished they just wanted to rest. They agreed to sleep early and maybe when they woke up next morning the rain would have ended and they would be able to enjoy the rest of the weekend.
As Eve slept, in her dream she opened her eyes to see what looked like a room inside a temple. The place was almost empty with one important object in the middle, an empty sarcophagus. Soon the doors from the room were opened and three man walked inside. Two of them were unrecognizable to her but the third she knew from the moment she saw his face. It was her father, or better speaking, Ratshet's father.
With a mourning look on his face, he approached the sarcophagus.
"I'm sorry, my daughter. I should have been here to protect you." He lamented.
Eve felt really bad for him. Losing his daughter that way must have been devastating.
"It wasn't your fault..." She said in hopes he could somehow hear her. But he didn't and as quickly as the vision started it ended.
She was back in her tent and to her luck her mother didn't woke with her. Eve really needed to get some fresh air. The rain apparently had already ended so she sneaked out of the tent as silent as possible. There were many puddles on the ground from the rain but the clouds seem to have disappeared from the sky revealing a endless sea of stars. It was a beautifully sight.
Eve's mind returned to the dream. Seeing the Pharaoh mourning his daughter messed with her. Not only because he was her father from a past life but because it angered her. Anger directed at the blasted sorcerer that caused all that pain. Next time she saw him, she would have make sure to control herself and don't do anything stupid.
It's just that the dream made her realize how he made people suffer. The guilt of everything that happened was his but others felt more guilty than him.
An realization crossed her mind.
...But isn't what how Ja-kal feels? Guilty?
He was supposed to protect Ratshet and failed. He was the one Ratshet approached to confess her suspicions. She placed her trust on him and in the end they lost everything.
And then there was herself...
Seeing Eve was a reminder to him of everything that went wrong. Everything that happened to Ratshet and could happen to Eve. He didn't want to fail again so he did all he could to keep her safe this time.
Eve came there to reflect in how she would deal with reality but what really happened was what she realized how Ja-kal was doing it.
A meow caught her attention, it was Kahti. For the first time, Eve felt relived to see the cat. Kahti rubbed up against Eve legs asking for affection.
"Hey, girl." Eve crouch on the floor to pet the cat. "Did you follow us all the way to here?"
The cat only meows as a response. Eve felt tears of regret almost forming in her eyes as she took Kahti in her arms.
"I was so terrible to everybody. I hope they forgive me." She mumbles.
Both of them turn to the forest as they hear something moving.
"It's okay. It's probably just a cayote." Eve deduced.
To her horror Anubis appears from between the bushes and grows at them.
"Ok. So I was half right." Eve immediately raised her hand to the necklace just to realize that it wasn't there. "The amulet!" It probably feel on the tent so she tried to get it but was stopped by another three beasts that appeared.
She was surrounded and the only thought in her head was of how all of that was her fault for being too stupid and stubborn.
Kahti had a quicker reaction as she jumped from Eve's arms and ran to the florest. Eve for an instant thought the cat was abandoning her but when the monsters followed the cat she understood Kahti's plan.
The cat was smarter than she expected.
"I hope she escapes them." She thinks out loud before hearing grows from behind her. There was another monster there. But this one was way smaller then the others. Maybe she could deal with that one.
"Hey, doggy. Y-you don't want to hurt me, do you?"
As the smaller monster advances in her direction, she ran to the forest not wanting to drive the monster close to her mother. She had to improvise and soon found herself climbing a tree to escape.
"Normally, cats hate me and dogs like me. Today a dog is hunting me and a cat saved me. Ha! Such irony." Eve reflects while shaking her head.
Little Monster bites the tree snapping it in two parts and the larger part of the three falls into the river bringing Eve with it. The the water current dragged her away from
her pursuer.
"Too bad for you. I am out of here. I am..."
She heard the sound of a waterfall and froze.
"...Over the falls. Shit!" She exclaimed as she unsuccessfully tried to swim against the current. To her luck, she notices Kahti standing on a branch of a tree, her strips were set loose so Eve could hold it.
The cat was way more intelligent than she expected.
"Kahti!" Eve exclaims holding the strip. "Good girl!"
She manages to climb to the branch without falling into the waterfall.
"I take back everything bad I ever said about cats!" She decides while hugging Kahti in gratitude.
The moment ends as they hear howling on the distance.
"Come on, we are not out of the woods yet." She jumps from the tree with Kahti in her arms.
As she runs, Eve checks behind her to see that the other four monsters had returned. When she turns her sight back to the front of her, she curses herself for not noticing sooner that she was running in the direction of the edge of a cliff. The monsters were already only some feet away from them. When she thought things couldn't get any worse an helicopter appeared and from it got off Scarab and some of his minions.
Eve looked at him with fury in her eyes, her memory of her last dream still fresh in her memory.
"You." She spats.
To her surprise, Kahti jumps from her arms and starts glowing as she changed to the size of an adult tiger and tried to attack Scarab with her claws. However, the sorcerer was faster as he quickly launched a spell at the feline throwing her to Eve's feet growing in pain.
"Kahti! No!" She kneels to check on her guardian as tears appear in her eyes. "That's all my fault..." She mutters, cursing herself.
"Don't you find cats annoying?" Scarab mocks getting closer to the duo.
"Yes, I did. But now I hate scarabs way more!" She bites back but he was unfazed by her tone.
"Well, Ratshet. Looks like I won."
The sound of a car approaching is heard by them as a strange looking car runs over the clay soldiers destroying them and pushes Scarab of the cliff, making him fall as he screams.
The roof of the car opens to reveal the mummies. As Kahti returns to her normal size, Eve gathers her in her arms and jumps inside the car. Eve was immensely happy to see her guardians but had to ask.
"Since when do you guys have a car?"
"Surprise." Nefertina jokes from the pilot seat as she tries to drive away from the cliff. The car only races for a few seconds before stopping.
"The storehouse of Ra is empty." Rath notices.
"You mean the battery is dead?" Eve asks.
"You could say that." Rath admits.
With the car inoperable, they became an easy target and soon Scarab started shooting at them. They emptied the vehicle and the mummies prepared to fight.
"With the strength of Ra!" They call, transforming.
While they were fighting, Eve tried not to interfere. Keeping herself out of harm, she felt Kahti moving in her arms looking at her. She knew what the animal wanted.
"Are you sure you are ok to fight?" She asks uncertain to let her go.
The cat only meows at her before jumping from her arms and into the battle.
From that point Eve basically watched from the sidelines as her friends fought. She felt the desire to help but didn't thought anything she could do would help at the moment. In a moment, Scarab tried to grab her but as she dodged ended up falling from the cliff.
"Ratshet!" Ja-kal screams as he jumps after her. With his speed, he managed to catch her before she hits rock bottom.
"Thanks." Eve says in his arms.
Quickly the four hunters were sent back to the other world by the mummies.
"Well, this plan has really gone to the dogs." Scarab flies away, seeing the his plan had failed. Remaining monster followed him on foot.
Ja-kal landed close to the others and Eve got to her feet.
"Are you alright?" He asks, as he notices that her face was contorted in worry.
She didn't knew how to start so only said what was in her mind since the battle started.
"Sorry...I should have listened to you. If I had at least warned you earlier about the travel nothing bad would have happened." She admits, her head hanging low in shame. Her state of distress worried her friends, that never saw her so nervous.
"Ratshet, it's okay." Nefertina tries to calm her down.
"No! It isn't! I not only putted myself in danger as also Kahti! Even my mom could have gotten hurt! I was so stupid!" She shouts while shaking her head.
"Even the greatest hunters have committed mistakes during their first hunts." Ja-kal quoted.
"What?" Eve asks, too distressed to make sense of his meaning. She tensed as Ja-kal placed a hand on her shoulder.
"What I meant is that everybody makes mistakes. You can keep punishing yourself for it or learn from it." He explains.
"I... I understand." Eve says as she managed to calm down.
"It's better if we start your training when you return." Ja-kal adds.
"Yeah! You will be kicking tut with us in no time." Nefertina states, trying to make her feel better.
"Alright. It's settled then." Eve concludes with a small smile in her face. Already feeling a little better.
Her friends had to leave soon after, as they had to return home to recharge. Even Kahti had to leave too as she used her energy to transform. The mummies said that Scarab would need to rest after losing the battle so Eve would have her free time with her mom after all.
Eve returned to the camp during sunrise. She smiled as she found the eye of Ra next to her sleeping bag. She was afraid to have lost it somewhere else. Deciding to always keep the amulet close, she placed it over her neck and laid down to rest at least a little.
Some minutes later, her mother had woken up after her best night of sleep in ages.
"Ah! What a beautiful morning! How about a hike before breakfast?" Amanda suggests excited. She was surprised to see that Eve still looked tired as she kept sleeping.
"How can you be tired after such a good night of sleep?" Mom wonders.
The rest of the weekend was great to mother and daughter, they had a lot of time to talk and even came to the realization that nether of them really liked camping. They decided to choose a complete diferent place for their next travel. Regardlees of the place they were, both enjoyed while it lasted. Without the rain and the threat of Scarab, the only real problem were the non-magical insects. They were annoying but not enought to ruin their mood. By their last night there, Eve caught herself wondering if things would ever be this peaceful again. Even if it did or didn't, It wasn't like she had a choice. She was thrown at this situation and the only way to get through this is to move on and adapt.
Some days later, after they came back home. And Eve finally started her training but to her disappointment she had to start from the basics. From Rath, she got some scrolls to read. From Armon, she was learning how to fall without hurting herself. From Ja-kal and Nefertina she wasn't learning nothing yet. Still, it was nice to think that in some time she would be able to help them or at least make their lifes easier by protecting herself.
One afternoon, while her mom was at work, Eve was in her room.
"So... I know I hesitated to have you here before. But now thing have changed. I owe you a lot... after all you saved my life." She turns to Kahti, the cat was standing in her bed staring at her.
"You will have to stay hidden at all times and just eat what I give to you." Eve instructed. The cat just tilted her head to the right in response. "I know you are understanding. You are a smart kitty."
She walks to her closet and opens it. She pushes her clothes to the side, revealing a comfortable looking pillow hidden in the ground. The cat looks at it.
"Er... I never had a cat before and I don't know exactly what you like so I hope it's good enough for you."
Kahti jumps from the bed and walks to the pillow, after testing the object with her paws, she lays down on it. Eve thought the cat looked satisfied so she smiled.
She was really starting to like Kahti.
I decided to wait for at least one review before writing the next chapter. I need to know what people are thinking about my story before adding more, so I can fix it if there is a problem or just keep writing if everything is right. I have a lot of plans for the next chapters, so I'm not going to abandon this story. And since this is my first time writting, I don't need to share time to work on another story at the same time, I prefer to focus on one story at a time. But if I start writing another story I will probably put this one on hiatus, after warning before.
Again, thanks for reading my story. See you in the next chapter.
