I don't own Mummies Alive! or any of the characters, except for Evelyn and Ratshet.
Hey, I'm back! I'm sorry for not uploading new chapters for some months but now I have less time to write because of my studies. It will probably take more time for me to write new chapters but I am not abandoning this story.
This chapter was more of a challenge since I changed the basic plot of the episode and I had to modify most of the dialogue. There was some scenes that became completely different from the original. This is the new biggest chapter of the story.
Please leave a review after reading. Your oppinion is always welcome.
Here is chapter six:
Episode six- Pals before mummies
It all started the next day after the Apep incident. As Eve walked to school, the memories of the battle were still fresh in her mind. The strangest part was that apparently (or at least according to Nefertina) Apep saved the mummy in cat armor when she fell off the bridge. It was difficult for Eva to think that the monster that chased her in the forest is someone responsible for saving her friend's life. Despite this 'heroic act', Eve hoped never to see Apep's ugly snake face again.
The following day was one of the rare occasions when her tutors let her go to school without an escort. Since Scarab didn't attack twice before taking a break, she was safe for a while.
Eve always finds Walter waiting for her near the school entrance, but that day he wasn't in the usual place. Eve looks around thinking that he might be around. She only sees other students coming to class, none of whom were Walter. Maybe he was sick or late, Eve concludes.
Class was about to start, so she walked to the class. To her surprise, Walter was already sitting there in his usual place in the classroom. He never got to class before talking to her, except in case one of them was late. That was the first time. Eve was going to speak to him at that moment, but as the bell announced the start of class. When the teacher arrives for class, Eve had to sit at an empty table that was unfortunately away from her friend's and decided to wait to talk to Walter later.
It was only during the break that Eve got the oportunity to talk to her friend. They were the only people who had not yet left the classroom so they could talk privately. Walter was taking the lunch money out of his backpack at the time.
"Hey, Walter." Eve greeted as she walked over to his table, she was confused when the boy didn't even turn to look at her. Even feeling insecure about her lack of reaction, Eve decided to proceed. "Why didn't you wait for me at the entrance today?"
"So now I will always have to wait for you?" He finally responds in a bitter tone. He turns to look at Eva with a judgmental look. "You don't even remember, do you? The game launch we planned to go to yesterday?"
Eve froze. Yes, she had forgotten. Some time ago the launch of Magevania 4 was announced, the sequel to one of your favorite games ever. Gambling was one of their favorite pastimes, so they planned to go buy their copies together and then go home to play. Eve was excited about the game's release, but then the unexpected situation happened with Apep. That stupid vengeful snake made her forget about her plans to meet Walter after school.
"Walter, I'm sorry." Eve said sheepishly, she didn't want to forget her plans and even if she had a reason for that (not that she could tell him that), Eve still felt bad about failing to remember her commitment to Walter. "It's just something that came up and ..."
Her friend interrupted her.
"Do you call participation in a contest 'something that came up'?" Walter questioned, at this point he was livid. For him, she was just trying to make excuses. When Eve looked confused, Walter explained what he knew. "I heard you talking to Elaine yesterday. She told you about the auditions and you rushed to the audition without even telling me that you weren't going to the store with me!"
"Walter, I didn't go to auditions!" Eve snapped. She wasn't just going to take the opportunity to participate in that stupid test before at least telling her friend that she wasn't going to the store with him, Walter had to get to know her better than to think that.
"So, why would you leave right after Elaine told you about them?!" He half questioned half exclaimed.
Eva stops for a moment, unable to come up with any lies. For a brief moment, she considered saying it was a coincidence, but it would be a terrible lie. In fact, Eve was really confused by Walter's behavior. Okay, they wanted to buy that game for weeks, but it wasn't enough reason to be so rude to her.
"I don't understand why you are so mad about it, it was just once!" She spoke in frustration. The way her friend was judging her was hurtfull, she didn't deserve that sermon.
"Just once ?! Eve, you've been acting weird for months! Since the day you told me about that weird dream, you've been acting weird. You're always tired! You disappear every afternoon after school What was there about the day you just ignored me in the hole class and walked like a zombie mumbling to yourself Than what was the video of that strange man after the earthquake, you didn't even laugh at it like the others. You were just ... It was just a joke, but you were acting like it was real! And then there was the audition. "He blew out an exhausted breath before continuing. His voice was softer but depressed. "Eve, if our friendship doesn't mean much to you, just tell me and I'll leave you alone. Just don't make me expect any better from you."
Eve felt as if she had been slapped in the face. Was she so blind to how her friend was feeling? She was so immersed in her adventures with the guardians that the normal life she had before seemed ... more distant. Not that she didn't want to be with her friend, Walter was like a brother to her, but she couldn't escape her destiny. She knew why she tried in the beginning and ended up with her and her mother being almost attacked in the camp
She didn't want to continue lying to those she cared about.
"Our friendship means a lot to me! It's just ... some things have happened in my life and now I'm trying to deal with it." Eva had to explain in a vague way so as not to reveal too much.
Walter stopped for a moment. Was Eve having any problems? He did not consider this possibility. If Eve had a problem, he supposed she would at least mention it to him.
"... Why didn't you tell me that? I'm your friend, I can help." He offers, his voice even softer, the harshness of before disappearing completely as soon as his anger has been replaced by concern for his oldest friend.
"Sorry, Wal. But in this situation ... you really can't help it." Eve shook her head sadly. Her problem was too insane for Walter to help. It's not like he can find a way for her to get rid of Scarab forever.
"Can you at least tell me what it is about?" He tries.
Eve considered her question. Should she tell him? He had always been her friend and the person closest to her, except for her mother - and now the protectors. They've always taken care of each other, so why not now? Still, Eve couldn't make that decision alone.
"... can I think about it? It's something big and honestly I don't even know where to start." She asks with a little nervousness, she knew that from that point on their relationship would change. The question is whether it would change for better or worse.
Walter was silent for a moment before giving his answer.
"Okay. You have until Friday to decide."
After that, Eva reflected on the matter. Losing their friendship was the last thing Eve wanted right now. They had a long history together and Eve liked that. And then this mess started and between training, school and fights with Scarab, Eve had little or no time with her friend. She ignored this issue for a long time and now she was in danger of severing her ties forever.
If she could, Eve would have told her friend the truth at that moment, but something stopped her. It was wrong for her to make a decision that would affect her friends before asking permission from their leader.
The next day she already had training planned with Ja-kal. They were improving their aim with the boomerang. She had a brief idea that crossed her mind to call the boomerang boomeRa but Eva noticed that it sounded very wrong as well as unnecessary and decided not to.
When she threw the boomerang at a distance, he bowed in the air and returned to her. The problem was that the boomerang came back very high in the air, so Eve had to jump to get her gun back. Her mistake in the goal did not go unnoticed by Ja-kal, who was beside her. He had enough training time with her to realize when Eva was distracted by some of her worries.
"Control your throw." He instructs before adding. "You are not paying attention, my princess."
"Sorry... I have some things in my mind today." Eve apologized. It was wrong from her part to let her problems affect her training but she couldn't help it.
Ja-kal shoot her a questioning look. He wanted her to be more specific.
"Er...hum..." Eve struggles to start. It was a delicate subject and she didn't knew how her friend would react. "Ja-kal, how do you feel about someone knowing our secret...?"
The mummy didn't catch what she meant but secret. What Eve considered secret was his hole current existence.
"...I'm afraid I don't understand. What secret?" He asks.
"Well... I guess everything between us is a secret." Eve realized as she explained better. "This battle against an evil sorcerer and now spirits and my Pharaoh spirit thing. All of it."
"...I never thought about it." He admits. "We just try to stay out of sight of other humans since we returned to life." Then he became worried. "Why are you asking this now? Did someone find out about us?"
Seeing her friend jump to the conclusion that they had a serious problem, Eve immediately calmed him down.
"Oh! No! No! The secret is safe for now!" She shakes her hand in the air as emphasis. "I am the one that want to reveal it to other person."
It was enough to soften his worry but he was still confused. Who would Eve trust this secret with?
"To your mother?" He tries guess without sucess.
At that moment, Eve thought she saw someone approaching but calmed down as she noticed it was just a street sweeper approaching by the path next to them.
"No. To my friend, Walter." She starts and then explains the situation with her old friend. "With all of this going on I am kind of unintentionally pushing him aside... it is affecting our friendship and I am afraid it could end it. But if he knew about you guys, he would understand why I had been acting strange."
"A desert lioness never brings an experienced lion to her hunt." He quotes.
"Please, be more clear this time. Sometimes it's hard to understand you." She asked, trying to be as polite as possible. It was an important subject to Eve so she wanted to be able to understand clearly his opinion on it.
"What I am saying is that I do not think that is wise, my princess. You do not know how much he might end up getting involved." He said.
"I'm just asking you to let him visit the Sphinx sometimes so that he can meet you. It's not like I'm asking you to bring him into battle. I want him as far as possible from any spirit that can come from the gates or Scarab. "She explains as flashes of her past battles came to mind. She really didn't want to put her friend in any danger.
It was ironic for her to say that at that moment, because the two friends had no idea that Scarab had invoked the Nuhn water spirit or that that spirit was close to them at the time. After searching for Eve using all the water supplies available in the city, he finally found Eve near the lair during her training.
According to his agreement with Scarab, he would be free if he brought Eva to the wizard. He stretched out with his body made of water to get close to Eve without her or her guardian noticing, but the moment he was about to grab her leg and pull her away, something caught him first.
The street sweeper Eve saw earlier sucked him in, starting with the end that got stuck in the brush. Before he knew it, the rest of his body followed him and the rotating brush shook his body so badly that he was unable to recover after the machine released him. His liquid form then flowed through a gap between him and the heroes.
Without realizing what had happened to Nuhn right next to them, Eve kept trying to convince Ja-kal.
"It's just that I don't want to lose people I care about just because I have these responsibilities ..." She said in a sadder tone.
Ja-kal froze for a second when a wave of memories of his human life hit him in full force, every time he wished he had spent more time with his family, but did not because of his duty to the princess and her dad. And now he has a hole in his heart where his family should be. He didn't want Eva to feel the same pain. She was a smart girl, if she thought her friend was worth the secret, then he should be. But if it got to the point where he got too involved, she would have to deal with the consequences.
"... if you think this is the right choice, then I will agree with you." He decided.
"Really?" Eve exclaims in surprise, she hoped to have to say more to convince him. Not that she was going to complain.
"Yes. As I said before, I trust your judgment." He stated with a small nod of approval.
"Yes! I can finally tell him!" Eve exclaimed in joy and relief. In her mind she was already beginning to plan on exactly how to tell Walter the truth.
But then Ja-kal added something else that completely interrupted her planning.
"But you will have to convince all the guardians." He added in a more serious tone.
"What?" Eve exclaimed before formulating a better sentence. "... but you are the leader. I thought your decision was final."
"It's not just my secret, it's all of us. So you'll have to convince everyone." He points as he put his hand on her shoulder and started to guide her back to the lair. He decided that they already had enough training for the day.
It was then that Eve heard a strange noise, it seemed ... someone trying to talk underwater or something.
"Did you hear anything?" She asks her friend to be sure. Maybe the noise was just in her head.
"No. Why do you ask?"
"Eh, it must be nothing." She then shrugs, thinking it was just her mind playing tricks on her.
She had no idea how wrong she was to ignore that as if it was nothing important.
The next day, Eve decided to try to fix things with Walter the best she could. Unfortunately there was no safe time spell that she could use to redo all those months and spend all the time wasted with him or perhaps a cloning spell so that she could be in two places at the same time. It changes that magic was not the answer, but the truth was. The best thing she could do now is to do the things she should have done before now, starting with the game. Because of that, at this time Eve was walking alongside Walter at the local mall that they always go to.
"Why did you want to go to the mall? I thought we were going to play at your place." Walter asks.
"I thought you might like to buy our copies of Magevania 4, since we..." Haven't because I was occupied with a snake guy tryng to get revenge on me for what the ancestor of my past life self did. "...couldn't before."
Walter was doubtful as he rolled his eyes at her. Bold of her to assume that there were still copies. Megavannia 4 was one of the most talked about games of the year and a lot of people were already talking about buying it since weeks before, the game was probably sold out at the stores in the first day. He was certain that they would not be able to find one.
"If there are still copies left." He then expressed his thoughts.
"Think positive, Walter." She encouraged him with a smile. "Perhaps there are still a few copies left."
"Okay, okay. I'll think positive." He obeys even without being sure. Hoping it wasn't sold out was the best they could anyway. "If we get the copies, we can try them out at my house."
He immediately turns to look at her in surprise.
"She went to college in another city, don't you remember? She was looking forward to leaving home and having her own life." He explained, feeling a little hurt that Eve had forgotten about it. Still, there was a big bright side to this situation that he really had to mention to her while a smile appeared on his face. "Finally after years of her bothering me and calling me a brat, I have peace at home. There are no more visits from her boring friends or complaints from her. While my dad is working, the house is all mine to do whatever I want. "
Eve frowned. She couldn't understand her friend's desire for an empty house. It wasn't the good thing his friend made it look like. There was a time in her life when Eve would do anything to have a brother or sister, it was around the same time that her mother was promoted at the museum and started to have less free time with her daughter. Eve was proud of her mother's success but she felt so alone from that point on. She had no relatives other than her mother and father, and the second has not appeared in her life for years. Walter is the closest to a brother she has ever had, which is one of the reasons she doesn't want to lose him.
At least now she had somewhere else to go, where she always felt welcome. The lair. Even though it was the home of an undead quartet, that place was still more alive than her own home.
Walter was silent for a few moments, Eve's forgetfulness about her sister's departure was another sign that she was really distracted by something. This was making him more and more anxious to know about Eve's situation. He hadn't planned on getting back to that anytime soon, but now he wasn't going to be able to contain himself.
"Anyway ... did you make your decision about your situation? Can you tell me what it is about?" He asks.
Eva tensed at the question. She hoped to have an answer sooner, but now, with Ja-kal deciding that she would have to convince all the guardians, she would need more time.
"I'm ... thinking about it. There are some ... factors that I haven't considered yet." Eve explained.
"Just don't keep me waiting forever." Walter shrugged as if he didn't care, although in fact he was still curious. He decided not to press the issue and to leave it to talk about later.
They arrived at the store a second before Nunh emerged in the water from a nearby water source, a fountain. His body was still in liquid form, but now he had regained control of it. As soon as he recovered he went back to looking for Eve using water sources. His eyes searched for her at the mall. He soon found her, who was leaving the game store with Walter. Not that he cared, but even he could say that something went wrong inside the store.
"I told you that the game was sold out." Walter says, the disappointment in his voice was evident. He let himself be hopeful, but in the end they were unlucky with the game.
"Sorry, Walter ... we can still try to look for the game in other stores." Eve suggests, still trying to find a way to solve this problem.
"Eve, the only store that can still have copies is probably the one across town. And I doubt you have time to go there before the weekend." Walter states.
His last sentence worried Eve, he seemed so sure that she wouldn't have time to look for the game. As if it were normal for her to be too busy with something else to spend time with him. She was about to say something when she heard screams coming from her left. She turned to check what it was.
There was a group of teenagers, probably about the same age as them, who were standing near a fountain. The water coming out was uneven, there must be some kind of problem with the water pressure because there was a lot of water spilling out all over the place. That was why the teenagers screamed before they left the scene, the fountain had left the clothes already soaked.
Walter and Eve quickly decided to do the same. The lots of water splashing out of the fountain were already causing a flood on the mall. The pair, as well as all of the other people at the mall, left in a hurry.
As the security closed the front doors there was already a high level of water inundating the mall.
"Well, that was weird." Eve says while looking at the doors closed behind them and the rising level of water.
"You think?" Walter remarks. "Let's blow this place and go play games at my house." He suggests.
Eve gave him a hopeful smile. Even with everything going wrong during their trip to the mall, he still wanted to spend some time with her.
"Let's go then. But don't expect me to go easy on you." She adds as a joke.
Walter rolled his eyes at her but his mouth still twitched upward into a smal amused smile. Classic Eve, he thought.
As they walked away in the direction of Walter's house, no one in the scene noticed Nuhn's face appearing from above the water.
His attempt of capture had failed again.
Later that same day, Eve offered her help to Rath in fixing the Nileator. Apparently the guardians had some accident with a huge wave some time before and Rath wanted to make some upgrades on the powerboat so he would be sure this wouldn't happen again.
Eve decided it was the best time to talk with Rath about her decision. She just didn't knew if he would accept. Eve thought of Rath as a rational type of person, he probably would think it's more beneficial if less peope know of the guardians existence. Eve's reasons to tell Walter the truth may not reason enough to him, she just have felt like it would be better to tell him the truth and partially get rid of this bad feeling that came whenever she hides the truth from someone close.
"I've increased the outlet manifold pressure." Rath said while working in the small engine compartment of the powerboat. "Now, hand me that amulet on the tool box". He gestured to the box then held his outstretched palm to Eve.
Following his instructions, Eve got the amulet from the box.
"So... I need to talk to you about something important." She says while placing the amulet on his outstretched palm.
"It's about your friend I presume." Rath places the object in certain place and the compartment glows with the power of the amulet.
"You already know about that?" Eve asks in surprise, clearly not expecting him to be be aware of the situation.
"Ja-kal warned us about your situation." Rath deflects his vision from the compartment to look at her. "You want to tell your friend about our existence to restore your friendship." He then closes the now glowing compartment.
"That's a simple way to summarize the situation..." She observes than asks. "Do I have your permition?"
"I don't see why you have to tell him about us, there have to be other ways for you to rebound with him." He then stands up and gets to the water canon controls.
"I don't know... he seems really curious. And now that I admitted there is something going on if I don't tell him he probably will never trust me again!" She explains as she gets next to him.
He said nothing to her, seemly reflecting on the situation.
"Please,Rath." She then begs.
"Eve, let me tell you something important. I learned a long time ago that knowledge is power, not only knowledge of Magic but any type of knowledge. If you tell him and something goes wrong he can use that knowledge against us. Soo if you really want to tell him you must be ready to face the consequences."
He expected that would at least make her reconsider her decision but the girl was insistent. She had already thought on the situation enough and wouldn't take no for an answer, not with her most precious childhood friendship on stake.
"I trust him. Even when we fight or argue we would never do something to hurt each other. You can trust him too." She firmly declares in hopes that she would convince him.
Seeing her with such determination her guardian lets a sigh of frustration. When she got that determined nothing got her to change her mind, not on this or her previous life.
"You aren't going to give up, are you?" In response Eve shakes her head in a 'no'. "Alright. Alright. You can tell him. But if something goes wrong don't say that I didn't warn you!"
Eve smiles, satisfied with her victory. Now she just had to convince the other two guardians.
With that out of the way, Rath turns his attention back to the controls.
"Well. Let's see how those water canon works now."
Eve gets closer to see the controls too. Rath pushed a button. It activates the cannons and a strong gust of water is fired from the cannons.
It was at this moment that Eve heard the strange sound of screams underwater that she heard the other day.
"Should it be making that noise?" Eve asks her friend.
He didn't answer her but something told her that the answer was no. She realized that in some seconds the jet had already sucked all of the water from the pool.
"Hum... maybe I need a smaller amulet." Rath concludes.
"Shouldn't you use a weaker one?" She ended up asking before realizing.
He just rose an eyebow at her, it was enough to make her explain herself.
"I meant that a smaller amulet isn't the same as a weaker one. Even small amulets can carry great power. So if you want the canons to be a little weaker you would need a less powerful amulet... Right?"
"It depends... I really need to start teaching you about amulets." He observes thoughtfull again.
"You know. With Walter on our side, I can just tell mom I will go at his house and we will have more time study without mom finding out." She suggests with a smirk.
With the pool empty. The group had to improvise a way to bring the jet back inside. They were using wooden logs to roll the boat back into the lair using a side opening.
Armon tried unsuccessfully to pull the vehicle back in with a rope tied to the boat when Eve approached him carrying another log in her arms.
Eve wondered what reaction he would have to his situation. He was not easy to predict when it came to serious decisions. There was not a trace of thought that Eve could have predicted as with the two previous guardians.
"Hey, Armon. I need to ask you something." Eva begins. She was less concerned with convincing Armon than Rath, but did not expect the answer that the armed guardian gave the following.
"Is it about your friend? I'm looking forward to meeting you!" He asks with a smile, surprising Eve.
"... so are you okay with me telling him?"
"Yes."
"Just like that?"
"Yes."
Well, that was easy. Eva can't help thinking.
"... not that I'm complaining, but why are you so well with me telling him?" She then asks, unable to contain the question in her thoughts.
"I trust your decision and with him visiting I can get more hamburgers ... besides, if you could convince Ja-kal and Rath you would obviously convince me too."
Eve decided to just accept that answer and go on with their work. It would probably take a while to get that powerboat back inside the lair.
The next day, at school, Eve was very concerned. She tried to speak to Nefertina the night before but was unsuccessful, the guardian had gone out to drive for a while, something she did often, and when she returned to the lair Eve was already home. Eve then decided to avoid Walter for a day just so that she wouldn't end up revealing too much by accident before convincing the last guardian. She feared that if she talked to Walter, some important information would slip away.
She walked quickly through the corridors always checking back for fear of Walter approaching without her noticing but in a moment when she was walking without looking at what was in front of her, she bumped into her classmate, Elaine, at the brokers. At least it was not a strong enough impact to knock them down. Still, Eve felt embarrassed to bump into her friend ... or almost a friend, Eve didn't know exactly how to classify her relationship with Elaine.
"Hey, Elaine ... I didn't see you there ..." She mumbles in embarassment.
"Is there something going on between you and Walter?" Elaine asks immediately. A little rude to skip any greeting but Eve didn't care.
"...How do you know?" Eve admits.
"I'm going to be a journalist. I need to be an observer." Elaine proudly declares.
If you were really an observer, you would notice that much more than that, Eva thinks as she represses the desire to roll her eyes.
"Anyway, did you guys fight or something?"
Amid her state of nervousness Eve gave too sincere answers.
"We are ... having difficulties dealing with some things."
"What kind of things?" Elaine asks curiously.
"Strange new things ..." Eve admits.
There was a sparkle of mischief in Elaine's eyes that made Eve freeze. What the hell was Elaine thinking ?!
"Are you guys in love with each other or something?" Elaine asks with a sly smile.
"Not!" Eva immediately exclaims, a slight flush appearing on her face. She hoped it was the end, but Elaine had another idea.
"Oh!" The blonde exclaims in surprise and tries to guess again. "One of you is in love with the other and now this is ruining your friendship!"
"NOT!" Eve exclaims louder than before, the blush on her face deepening. Some people in the corridor turned to them because they heard her exclamation so Eve forced herself to calm down before continuing on to a lower pitch. "He's like a brother to me and I'm sure he would never see me like that."
This finally made Elaine calm down with her investigation.
"Well ... that's a shame. It would be a great story." She then said, a hint of disappointment in her voice.
"You really need to tone down your journalistic side. You can't just go around looking for stories everywhere. Eventually, you'll end up telling a lie and ruining someone's reputation." Eva suggests as she calms down. The few people in the corridor who turned to look at them after their explosion went back to doing what they were doing before.
"I will not do that! I always check my sources of information!" Elaine states firmly, but it does nothing to convince Eva.
"You were suggesting that my best friend and I were in love a moment ago!" Eve reminds her.
"Well, yes." Elaine admits. "But I checked with you and then I would check with Walter too. Speaking of which, if you're not in love, why are you avoiding him?"
"I wouldn't say that I'm avoiding him..." Eve tries to deny.
"That's great because here he comes." Elaine points behind her and sure enough Walter was at the far end of the corridor they were in.
Eve panics, not wanting to make more excuses to him before having Nefetina's answer so she immediately ran in the opposite direction of Walter before he could see her.
"That girl is weird..." Elaine whispers to herself, seeing Eve run to the distance.
It was complicated to evade her friend in a way that doesn't seem intentional so Eve eventually found herself in the girls bathroom, the only place she was sure she wouldn't cross paths with her friend.
She splashed some water from the bathroom sink on her face to refresh herself. But as she turns to dry yourself, notices there is no paper left.
"Great! No towels. Like my day can get any worse!" She sarcastically exclaims.
Someone grabs her from behind imobilizing her by trapping her arms in a hold.
Unknown to her Nuhn was the one trapping her. She tried to break herself free of his hold or at least hit him but her attempts were unsuccessful.
"Let go of me!" She exclaims as a light shines from her amulet.
To both of their surprises, Eve's power was able to block Nuhn humanoid form for some moments making him become a puddle on the ground.
Not wasting time, Eve ran out of the bathroom and for the second time of the day bumped into someone. That someone happened to be Walter.
"Hey! Watch out where you-! Eve?" He starts annoyed by being bumped on but it changes and he sees the look of shock in Eve's face. "Are you okay?"
Eve quickly picked herself together. The confrontation on the bathroom got her a little shaken but compared to her previous conflicts it was nothing.
"I'm alright. I just thought I saw something and got scared but it probably just my imagination." She brushed it off, not wanting bother her friend with that.
But Walter had already noticed she seemed to be hiding something from him so he pressed on.
"You sure? You can tell me everything." Walter said, trying to get her to be honest with him.
She was going to say it was nothing but as she accidentally to look at him in the eye realizing his worry for her she just couldn't lie.
"I... I think someone tried to grab me in the bathroom." Eve confesses but immediately wanted to take it back. She didn't knew why she said that, probably because she was tired of lying to her friend.
"What?" He exclaims.
He hesitated but got a quick peak on the girls bathroom behind them. He wouldn't normally do that but considering the circumstances, he ignored the feeling of awkwardness in his chest. But the bathroom was empty and all the stalls were open and empty too. He could see a large puddle in the floor but there was no one there.
He then turned to his friend.
"Eve, there is no one there."
"Not anymore."
"What?" He ask in confusion.
If it was one year before Eve would probably think she freaked out for nothing but considering all the magic she saw the last few months, she now judged almost everything possible. She was certain she saw her amulet glowing, it only reacted when she was in danger but at the same time she hadn't seen what had grabbed her. It's best if she be more careful for now on and if something happens immediately call the others.
"Eve?" He calls her seeing how thoughtful she became.
"Yes?" She answers, keeping her thoughts on hold to talk to him.
"What do you mean by 'not anymore'?"
She bit her lip, taking a few seconds before answering.
"It has to do with my situation." Eve then said.
"So are you going to tell me?"
"I can't. Not yet."
"Why? I'm here, you're here." He exclaims gesturing with his hands to both of them and then the hall. "We are on an empty hall and nobody will hear us. What's stopping you?"
"I haven't talk with Nefertina yet!" She blurred out.
Silence. And then.
"... who?"
Shit.
"...She is my friend. I need to talk to her before telling you." She explains without revealing too much.
"Why you never mentioned his girl before?" He asks in suspicion.
"..."
"Eve!"
"Just give me one more day and I will tell you everything! I just need more time to talk to her!" She begs trying to end the subject.
"Okay! Okay! One more day!" He says deciding to drop the subject for the moment. "Now, we better go to class, we are already late."
Later that day, Eve was still trying to find out what happened in that bathroom. Walter said there was no one there just a minute after she was grabbed. The bathroom windows were too small for anyone to leave. So, how did this person get out so quickly?
"Is there something bothering you, Eve? You usually have a lot to say when I drive under the red headlights." Nefetina asks next to her.
They agreed to meet on some streets outside the school so that Nefertina could get a ride home. The mummy had already gotten used to driving modern cars, but he still didn't understand the traffic rules ... or he just doesn't care. Anyway, Eve got used to her driving, because now she knew her friend was not going to crash.
"I just need to ask if you accept me by telling the truth to my friend." Eva begins, knowing that now was a great opportunity for her to ask Nefertina for her opinion. "It means a lot to me."
"I know how you feel, Eve." Nefertina spoke with sympathy. "I really know. When I was pretending to be a man, I often wanted to tell guys my secret."
"So why didn't you do that?" Eva asks curiously.
"Why didn't I do it?" Your friend reflects before planning her response. "... I think at first it was because I was afraid that they would tell their father. But after that I was just worried that they would never accept the real me, they were so used to who I pretended to be at that time."
"I don't want to hide things from my friend. And I don't want to pretend that I'm someone I'm not when I'm around him." Eve said crestfallen.
"It's not the same, Eve." Nefertina tries to comfort her. "You can be yourself, you don't have to pretend to be a man."
"But I have to pretend I'm normal when I'm not. I was never normal to start, but I didn't know!" Eve points out. "I want him to know the real me. With the old spirit and everything."
"Then you should tell him." Your guardian simply says.
"So do you accept that?" Eva asks hopefully.
Nefertina stops the car in front of Eve's house and turns to look at her. A smirk appeared on his mummified face.
"I could never deny you anything when you look at it. The others know it too." She said.
"Really?" Eve asks in surprise.
"You have Ratshet's determination and let me tell you this: she didn't take no for an answer."
It brought a smile to Eve's face.
The next day at school she felt better now that she had the approval of all of her guardians. She got to her and Walter's meeting spot and was relieved to find him there waiting for her. As soon as he noticed her arrival a smile appeared in his face and he got something from his pocket.
"Guess who got two tickets to the most awesome water park on the whole planet?" He asks while showing her two tickets.
"Your sister?" She teases.
He rolls his eyes at her but thankfully was not in a seriously annoyed.
"You're free night, right? You sure you can go?" Walter asks.
"Of course I will go with you!" She says as she takes one ticket from his hands. "While we are there we can talk about my situation."
"So you are finally telling me?" Walter asks a little surprised.
"Yes. Now I can." She answers with a nod.
"Why not now?" He inquires.
She looks around and catches a glimpse at Elaine. That girl was definitely a gossip girl so Eve preferes not talk about her secret in the same building as her. Who knows what might happend if Elaine finds out she is hidding something big?
Something wasn't right.
It looked right, the park was full of other teens and kids running around enjoying the attractions. Their screams were of joy and not fear. So why Eve felt that something terrible wrong was about to happen?
Well, considering that she was about to tell her friend the truth behind her behavior all those months she had a reason to feel that way. She wondered how would he react. If he would accept her. Or if he would accept her guardians too.
"Eve?" He calls from next to her.
"What?"
"You zoomed out again."
Deciding to be more sincere from now on she just tells him the truth.
"Sorry. I just got this strange feeling that something isn't right" She admits. "Maybe we should go somewhere else."
"But we just got here. Hey! It's Wave World the coolest water park on the hole planet!" Walter complains.
"I know but somehow something just doesn't feel right." She repeats.
The two of them got to an empty area of the park, it was far from any attraction queues so no one was close enough to hear them.
"Just relax a little. You have been tense all the way here." Walter suggests kindly, making Eve feel bad for letting her worries affect their fun.
"I'm sorry for ruining the mood. I thought I would feel better now that I can be honest with you but now I don't know where to start..."
"Just tell me." He then tells her, having noticed her nervousness. But Eve knew he had no ideia the craziness she was going to tell him about.
Eve took a deep breath, gathering all her courage. It was time to tell him the truth and she couldn't mess it up.
"I am a princess..." She quickly realizes that she was explaining it wrong and fixed it. "...well, not actually a princess but the reincarnation of one."
That got Walter confused, his eyes widen at her.
"...what?"
"Remember the strange dream that I had about the Ratshet's exhibition? Well, it wasn't a dream. I was a memory." She adds.
Walter just stared at her for a moment, looking at her expression for signs that she was joking or something but he only realized her seriousness.
"Eve, if that's all about that dream I thought we already agreed that it was just..." He tried to reason with her but was interrupted.
"The thing is Ratshet was almost murdered by this sorcerer that wanted to use her soul to gain imortality and more power but she died before he could do that so he killed her guardians. But he had enough magic to survive until modern days and when he realized that I have her spirit he came after me but my guardians saved me, just that now they are mummies alive. So the last few months Scarab, that's the name for the sorcerer, has been trying to get my souls but my guardians have been protecting me and that's why I haven't been able to go out with you." She told him in one breath, just wanting to get it over with.
She spoke so fast that Walter almost didn't understood what she was saying. It felt like it all just got thrown at his face so he just glared at her.
"Okay... something else?" He then asks.
"...my cat is a mummy too." She adds.
"Wow..." He was silent for a second to gather his thoughts before continuing. "That's... not what I was expecting. Ether you are telling the truth or you finally gotten nuts."
"It's the truth!" Eve exclaims, hurt that he was suspecting she was crazy. "You have to believe in me!"
"I believe that YOU believe that. I know when you are being serious!" He sadly shakes his head at her. He could see that she was sure of what she was saying but at the same time it was just surreal. "But, Eve, what story is just... impossible to be real."
"It's not impossible! This has been my life for almost half a year and I decided to tell you!" She exclaims but then a wave of sadness got hold of her. She looked at him in the eyes before continuing. "Walter... I am tired of lying to everybody I care about. You are the only person I trust to keep my secret and I- I don't want to lose you just because my life is a mess. You are my best friend."
Before any of them could say anything else. All of the lights of the park suddenly exploded, making some people in the park scream in shock. Eve and Walter didn't scream but they got a scare since it happened so suddenly.
"What was that? Some blackout?" Walter asks trying to make sense of the strange occurrence.
"I hope so..." Eve mumbles in hopes that it was really just a blackout, but deep inside she could feel that it was something more serious.
It was the sound of flowing water that confirmed her suspicion. It was as if all the water of the park had joined forming a huge wave and now it was coming in their direction. Thinking fast, Eve pushed her friend away from her as hard as she could before the current of water washed her away.
Walter was in shock for some seconds but it was just when the strange wave of water passed he noticed his friend was gone.
"E-Eve?"
Eve tried to swim against the current of water but it was too strong for her to fight it so she got hold of her amulet and screamed.
"Guys! Help!" She calls to her friends as her amulet glows.
She then tried to get an hold of anything above water including the park gates but soon she was ended up in the parking lot. It was only then that she managed to grab a parking sign and she hold on tight until the level of water decreased.
When her feet finally touched the ground Eve's legs gave up under her and she fel to her knees coughing out all the water she ended up swallowing while being carried away by the wave.
"I was starting to think Nuhn was an idiot but look what he brought to me."
Still with her breath uneven, Eve looked up to see the last person she wanted to see that day. Scarab had arrived with some of his shabti minnions.
"... my own private fountain of youth. Your spirit will make me-"
Eve cut him off, not wanting to hear another one of his annoying speeches about power and immortality.
"Couldn't you wait just more five minutes?! I was in the middle of something important there!" She exclaimed in annoyance. Normally she wouldn't do that but he interrupted a tense moment for her.
Apparently he really liked his speeches so he took offense in her interruption. His face twisted in anger at her insolence.
"Take her." He ordered to his minnions.
Eve jumped to her feet and tried to run away from them. One of them got a hold of her arm so she tried to punch it with her other arm but then it was grabbed by another one, immobilizing her. She tried to break free but they were strong as stone.
"As I was saying before being rudely interrupted. Your spirit will make me young again. Imortality. Unlimited power!"
He just had to finish his speech. Hadn't he?
After he recovered from the shock of seeing his friend being washed away Walter ran in the direction the strange wave dissapeared to with Eve. He looked for any indications that the large wave passed there. Folowing the trail of distruction de got to the entrance of the park. He knew Eve wasn't the best swimmer so he feared she could have drowned.
As he got to the entrance of the park and was about to get out, he heard Eve's voice.
"Can't we leave this for tomorrow, Scarab? I am not in the mood for this today!"
Quickly ducking for cover, he hid behind the gate walls and peeked to see who his friend was talking too.
Sincerely, he didn't knew what to expect. But an old man in a beetle armor was more than unexpected.
He also realized that some strange stone creatures were there too, two of them were grabbing Eve's arms and shoulder keeping her in place while she glared at the old man in frot of her.
"Don't worry, young princess. This will be the last time. You won't escape me now." He could heard the strange man say in the distance in a tone that make him feel creeped out.
Eve's answer was equally unexpected.
"Are you sure of that?" Eve said with a smirk.
As soon as she said that two flaming arrows hit the creatures holding her, breaking them in pieces and freeing her.
All of them turn to see the car racing in their direction.
"Mummies..." Scarab mumbles in annoyance so quietly that only Eve heard him.
From his hiding spot it was hard to see but Walter guessed there were four people at the car. One of them stood up in the vehicle shooting another glowing arrow at the soldiers. Destroying another one.
The car stops some feet away from the group and every passenger jumps out. It was when Walter got a better look at them. His jaw dropped when he realized they were four living mummies.
Walter noticed that their apparent leader, the one with the arrow, points to Scarab and shout at him.
"Let the girl go, Scarab!"
Scarab grabs Eve's shoulder, keeping her close. Walter felt an urge to go help his friend but it would be worse if he got involved at that moment.
"Well, let me think. How about no?" He pretends to be really considering it for a moment as a way to mock the heroes. "Shabti, destroy them!" He then orders to his soldiers.
"With the strength of Ra!" The heroes exclaim in sincrony.
Walter watched in awe as the four warriors summoned their armor.
"Let's kick tut!" Armon cries out jumping into the fight.
Then the battle started. He saw Nefertina uses her wip to throw one soldier against the other breaking both. While Armon took care of another two by breaking one's arm and smashing it against another.
The other two, Rath and Ja-kal, were being approached by a group of five soldiers but they seemed not intimidated by them.
"Five against two..." Rath notes.
"Poor odds... for them." Ja-kal says with confidence, a smile on his face.
But before any of them could make the first attack a manhole explodes from between them and Nuhn appears.
"Nuhn!" Rath imediatlly recognizes the water spirit.
"Sorry for ruining your parade but I am taking the princess now!" Nuhn declares as he summons another wave that washes the guardians and minions away.
"Your guardians are all washed up, Ratshet..." Scarab mocks still holding Eve.
To her relief the body of water got to them too and as the water crashed against them, Eve was able to break free from the sorcerer hold. Now the problem was swimming again. She was, as the first time, being dragged away by the strong flowing but was not able to hold on to anything this time. She saw her guardians getting back into their car and called after them.
"Help!" She cries while unsuccessfully trying to swim in their direction.
Her friends immediately hear her and Ja-kal speedily unites some of his wrappings.
"Grab hold, oh princess!" He screams and threw the warping in her direction so she could grab it. As soon as her hands hold the wrappings the leader of the guardians drag her to the vehicle.
She climbs into the vehicle with the help of Ja-kal and has to catch my breath.
"Are you harmed, my princess?" He asks in worry, his eyes searching her body for wounds.
"Well, my hand hurts but now that I think about it punching a clay soldier wasn't a good ideia..." She admits making her friends look at her funny.
As quick as it appeared all the water vanished from around them and as the vehicle was lowered into the ground the team speeded off.
Walter had difficulty seeing what happened after the wave flooded the parking lot but after the heroes disappeared in the distance, he could see the Nuhn appearing infront of a haggard Scarab.
"That little squirt Ratshet put me in a lot of trouble now I am going to destroy the world!" He declares. "And she is going to be the first to go!" He laughed and then left by the sowers.
The young man realizes to his horror that the water spirit was after his friend too.
"All I want is immortality... is it too much to ask?" Scarab asks himself in defeat trying to get up but falling back into the ground.
Serves you right, creep. The boy thinks, happy to seeing the sorcerer down.
He then turns to look at the direction the heroes had speed off to. He could only hope those strange guardians would protect his best friend... and also hope that Eve forgave him of suggesting she was crazy.
They had reached an empty street when a manhole exploded creating a pillar of water that blocked their path.
"Rough water ahead! Hang on!" Nefertina tried to stop the car before they crashed but the car was going too fast for her to stop and they ended colliding with the pillar. Eve felt greatfull for remembering to use the seatbelt since the car flipped a few times before stopping.
All passagens were disoriented for a moment and it was enough for Nuhn to open the cover of the car and grab Eve in his water hand. He had assumed a huge form infront of them, staring the reincarnated princess in his grasp with a smile on his face.
Feeling Nuhn's grip on her again, Eve remembered vividly how she felt in the bathroom. Maybe she could break free from him as she did before! The girl tried to concentrate in that feeling and as she expected her amulet glows like before and the hand disintegrated. Her victory was brief since without the hand there was nothing keeping her from falling into the ground. To her luck Ja-kal managed to catch her before could she fell to her death.
"That really makes my water boil." Huhn complains as he turns into a cloud.
Then there was a bright light and Eve could feel Ja-kal's power weakening as he stopped using his flight and both started falling. Only then she realized he was struck by lightning.
Eve was saved again as she felt the familiar feeling of Armon's golden arm against her skin when he caught her. Ja-kal had fallen into the vehicle too and Rath had less success in catching him than Armon with catching Eve. Nefertina speeded out of there but Nuhn made it start snowing.
"If Nuhn changed again it will be living hell..." Rath spoke with dread.
"Ice...that's it!" Eve says as she was having and ideia. "Head It to the mall!"
"I would if I could see the street." Nefertina complains as she tries to see what's in front of the car with difficulty since the snow started gathering around them blocking the view.
Armon then smells something in the air.
"Go that way." He says as he points in and specific direction. "I smell chilly fries."
Nefertina turns to him one second in surprise but then shakes her head. Her powers were supposed to enchence her senses, including smell, but when it came to finding food no one beats Armon.
The people in the mall jumped out of the way when their car speeded into the building. They navigated the halls to get to the steering ring.
"The skating rink. What way!" Eve guides since she knows the place better.
They got to the iced grounds and Nefertina was able to stop the car without damaging anything around the rink. They all jumped out of the car. Rath realizes Eve's plan and then turns to her in surprise.
"You think this is going to freeze him?" He asks to be sure.
"I hope so." She admits, praying her plan would work.
"This place is not cold enough go freeze him! He is too much hard to freeze then normal water!" He tells her making her realize her plan wouldn't work.
"What?!" She exclaims in shock and turns as she hears corrent water a sign that Nuhn was already getting close to them. "Then we have to make it colder..." She quickly makes another plan. "Do you have that power amulet? Like the one you used in the Nileator?" At his nod of affirmation she continues. "If we can get it to the refrigeration then it will be cold enough to freeze him!"
"And where is this refrigeration?" Rath asks in anticipation, getting the amulet from the car. Eve point to a machine in the far end of the hall just in time for Nuhn to arrive after them.
"Thought you could make me looks like a drink?" Nuhn said with a threatening smile.
"Just give me that!" Nefertina grabs the amulet from his hands and sprints in the direction of the refrigeration.
"Wait! You don't know where to place it!" Rath stats but Nefertina places the amulet in a random position in the machine anyway. A bright light covers the rink for a moment and all of the heroes could feel the temperature drastically drop in seconds.
"No! I-I'm freezing!" Nuhn notices as his body start to become ice.
"Y-you and me both..." Eve mumbles. The freezing cold affecting her too especially considering the beathing suit she was wearing at the moment.
Nuhn's entire body becomes an ice and it shatters in many small pieces. Eve could feel his presence disappearing from there.
"The spirit of Nuhn is b-back where it belongs to..." The immense cold was now unnecessary so he turns to Nefertina and commands. "Take the amulet out before we freeze with him!"
"No need to shout at me!" She complains but immediately does that and the temperature starts to rise.
"Good quick thinking, princess. I'm surprised you remembered about the amulet so fast." Rath admits to Eve.
"I'm good improvising." She shrugged and then became worried as she realized exactly where they were. A public shopping full of people. "We better leave before the security comes to see what happened here."
When Eve got back to the water park some of the lights were fixed but for safety the park was being closed for repairs. All of those who were not working on the repairs were in the parking lot waiting for a cab to go home.
Eve took some time to find Walter since he was away from the crowd. She was worried about explaining her vanishing, since he didn't believe in her about the mummies he probably wouldn't believe if she told him the truth about what just happened as well.
"Sorry for disappearing like that. I can explain." She starts to apologize but before she could continue Walter answers.
"I know. I saw."
She freezes for a second, thinking she heard it wrong.
"You... saw?" She than asks.
"Yeah. Creepy old man. Water dude. Living mummies. Your life is really crazy but real." He admits, thinking it was kind of funny the shock in her face at his answer.
"You saw all of that..." She repeats when the information starts to really sink in. "You were there the entire time?!"
"I was trying to find you, thought you would need help. I just didn't expect you to need help against an evil sorcerer but your new friends seem to have the situation under control." Walter calmly explains with a smile.
She smiles and hugs him tight. Eve was relieved that nether her enemies had noticed Walter's presence, she wouldn't forgive herself if she let her best friend get hurt."I'm happy you are alright." She said with a small smile.
"No, Eve. Those two weirdos wanted to get to you, I'm happy you are alright. Sorry for not believing in you." He apologizes.
"It's okay I probably wouldn't believe if I was in your place. It's a bit crazy."
"A bit crazy?! Four friends have magic armors that appear out of nowhere! And they are living. Walking. Mummies!"
She gigles a little at his outburst.
"Yes. My friends are pretty nice. Want to meet them?" She offers.
"Eve, I think a had enough magic for one night." He admits while shaking his head. "...I know you tried to explain before but why were those two after you?"
"It's a long story."
Now that she don't have to lie to her best friend, Eve felt like a weight was lifted from her shoulders. She would still have to lie to her mother and other people but it was still a relief to be able to talk freely to someone else. Unfortunately, her friend still had to digest everything, so Eve decided to wait a little before introducing him to her guardians personally.
The girl walked into passageway inside of the lair that led to Rath's room. She had gotten curious about the studies about amulets and their power since their talk at the powerboat and with what happened at the mall. There was a room in the lair where they stored all their scrolls and books, kind of their own library, where she found a scroll that caught her interest but there were some parts of the information written there that confused her so she decided to talk to her magic teacher about them.
As Eve walked inside of the room, without remembering of knocking first, her eyes didn't leave the scroll resting on her hands.
"Hey, Rath! I was reading this scroll about amulets and..." She trails of as soon as she looks up.
Rath's room was kind of his lab more than a kind of bedroom since his sarcophagus was on the other room. There were scrolls all over the place but what surprised her was her guardian himself.
In front of her was her friend Rath.
But he was not a mummy anymore.
That looked like the Rath from 3500 years ago.
He wasn't a mummy anymore.
The truth is, I had the first part of this story written since August, I just got stuck in the scene where Eve talked to Rath. Perhaps it was a good thing, as I had more time to plan this chapter and made a big change some time ago. Initially I was planning on Walter not finding out the truth and Eve lying to cover it up. But a month ago I decided to allow him to discover the truth, it allows me to explore his character more and use him more. Therefore, it will probably appear more than in the original.
About Eve and Walter's relationship, as I mentioned a few times they see themselves as brothers. The loneliness that Eve felt for not having a family besides her mother was partially smoothed by the presence of Walter in her life, she was not going to give up her friendship so it makes sense that she would eventually reveal this part of her life to him. I hope their worry for each other didn't feel too forced but I wanted to show how much they care for each other. It will be interesting to explore how their relacionship will be from now on.
About the guardians oppinions on the matter, I tried to keep them in character and at the same time don't to spent too much time in convincing them. Truthlly, the hardest was Armon since he wasn't the type of character to have deep thoughts so he just accepted her decision.
About the last scene, it will be explained in the next chapter. I will not change the synopsis, as it is basically the same as the original.
Please, share your thoughts in the reviews. I really appreciate knowing your opinion on the story.
I have to admit that the next chapter probably won't be out until December but I won't abbandon this story.
Thanks for reading this story and see you soon.
