Chapter 4: Corvus' Christmas
The first week of December was a busy one, McGonagall was going around to each of the four houses working out who was leaving and who was staying at Hogwarts. When she skipped over Corvus' name, he asked: "Professor McGonagall, why did you not ask me?"
She replied by saying, "As you do not have a residence to stay in, I marked you down to stay at Hogwarts. It would be very irresponsible for me to do otherwise."
"I understand that ma'am, but I would like to return to the leaky cauldron so that I can go shopping over the holidays. If you want I can make you a promise that I will only go to Diagon Ally and will not wander around London."
"I cannot allow that Mr Aquila if you would like to go to Diagon Ally I will take you when I am free on Sunday." She states with a tone of finality to her voice
"If I can get the permission of off Dumbledore can I go?" Corvus pleads
"Fine but it must be his written permission, and you have to keep the promise you made, I will be checking with Tom, the bartender."
"Thank you so much," Corvus says, "what is the password to the headmaster's office so I can talk to him," Corvus asks.
"It is Peppermint canes this month, and I expect a fast reply" McGonagall answers.
Corvus starts to run towards the headmaster's office, taking every shortcut he knew. Once he gets to the gargoyle, he shouts the words "Peppermint cane" at it and waits for it to move aside. He rushed up the stairs, but when he gets to the top right before he knocks on the door, Dumbledore says "Come in Corvus."
Corvus opens the door and says "Nice proximity spell sir, most people wouldn't notice it. Anyway, I didn't come here for that. May I have written permission to stay at the leaky cauldron this Christmas? I would like to go to Diagon Ally and stay away from Hogwarts for a short while."
Dumbledore thinks for a minute and says "I will allow you on one condition, that you do not go wandering around London."
"Me and Professor McGonagall already had that agreement between us just in case you said yes to this." Corvus quickly informs
"Good, good. Well, I guess you can go to the leaky cauldron for the holidays than" Dumbledore replies. He then picks up a quill and a piece of parchment and writes a note to Professor McGonagall and hands it to Corvus.
"Thank you, sir" Corvus shouts whilst starting to run back to Professor McGonagall. When he gets to her, he gives her the note and looks up at her
"This will do Mr Aquila, and I will put you down for the list of students leaving" McGonagall states as she crosses out a name and writes it somewhere else.
A week later, Corvus walks into the leaky cauldron and asks to rent a room for his Christmas break. For the next few days, all he did was sit around, read his books and help out in the bar to get a small amount of money. Corvus decided that he would go to Diagon Ally on his birthday, which was the 20th of December. When it came to his birthday, he told Tom the bartender that he was going to the ally for the day and to not expect him back until much later.
First, he went to Gringotts bank to withdraw money for his day out. When he was there, the goblin informed him that because his parents were dead and he was the last of his great line, he could become emancipated. To do so, all Corvus had to do was put on a ring which judges him to see if he is worthy. If he is, the ring will blow bright golden. If it isn't the ring will disappear back into the family vault until he becomes of age.
Corvus agreed to do so and was given his Lord ring, which was a mixture of black and white with his family symbol of a thunderbird on it. He puts it on and waits for something to happen. After a few seconds, the ring starts to glow bright gold and shrinks to fit his finger
"Well done Lord Aquila, it seems you are worthy of the title." Says the goblin.
"Thank you, sir, what an honour. Might I ask what happens now that I am emancipated?" Asks Corvus.
"Well firstly as you are now legally an adult you will have access to all of the Aquila family vaults. Next, you will have to fill out all of the legal documents about your seat on the wizenagemot and assign a proxy if you want. Finally, I want to remind you that even though you are emancipated, you will still have the trace on you until you are seventeen." The goblin explains.
"Ok, when do you need those documents filled out by?" Asked Corvus, looking bored.
"We will need them to be filled out by the end of January, any other questions?" The goblin replies
"Yes, just one final one. Who would suggest that I talk to about being my proxy for the seat when I am not there?" Corvus asks twirling his wand between his fingers.
"Well as you might know Mr Aquila we goblins are not allowed an input on magical laws, so I am not legally allowed to answer that." The goblin answered with a scowl on his face, Corvus could see the scowl was not directed at him, but the whole system itself.
"Thank you for your help, might I ask for your name?." Corvus asks whilst picking up a rather large amount of paperwork and placing it within his bag.
"Barchoke, senior accounts manager." The goblin replies.
"Is there any way I can contact your boss? I think that you deserve a raise. You have treated me with nothing but politeness and honour."
Barchoke is caught off guard by this but quickly hides his expression "you would have to make an appointment. I can confidently tell you that his next free slot is on the 2nd of January if you would like I can put you down for a two o'clock appointment to speak with him."
"That would be great, thank you," Corvus states quickly.
"Any more questions or are we finished here?" Barchoke asks.
"No, that's all. Thank you again, and I will see you when I next need help dealing with money." Corvus states as he picks up his bag and walks out.
After spending some time eating some ice cream, Corvus decides that he needs a second wand just in case his breaks or gets lost. He looks around to find Ollivander's but finds out that it is closed because of an incident involving someone blowing out the side of the building whilst trying some wands. Corvus walks around a bit and sees a side street called Knockturn Ally. He walks down it to see shady people and shadier shops selling rare ingredients, cursed items and things you wouldn't find anywhere else. He stumbles across a wand shop called "Baculum magicum est occultatum" he knew it was a wand store as all of the items on display were wands
Corvus walks into the shop and rings the bell. Suddenly a man who looks to be in his mid 70's with white hair, a carefully crafted cane to support himself and a scowl on his face appears from behind a counter and says "aren't you a bit young to be shopping around here?"
"Hello sir, am I correct in saying this is a wand shop? I need a secondary wand" Corvus says confidence filling the air.
"Yes, this is a wand shop, but a boy like you should be shopping at Ollivander's," the man said, still scowling.
"I would, but it's shut at the moment, and I think the wands you had on display are amazing," Corvus replies, pointing at some of the wands by the window.
"Listen here, kid, in this shop I only do personalised wands. The Wands are custom made for the customer to be exactly what they want them to be. It gets quite expensive." The man snaps.
"Money isn't an issue, and my original wand was custom made to." Corvus pulls out his wand and shows it to the man. "See it's a duality wand, everything came in a pair, the woods, the cores and the engravings are one of a kind. It's a wand made specifically for me."
"Fine kid you got me sold, just tell me what kind of wand you want and I will take you to the back and get some things for you." The man says, defeated.
"As I said, I would like to have a secondary wand, this one a bit more battle focused and aggressive," Corvus states, whilst twirling his wand around his fingers.
"Fine but that'll be a bit different than your normal wand, and you'll have to get used to it and how it works with you." The man walks Corvus behind the counter and into the back room. He then sets up a few tables and puts on some woods on the first, some cores on the second and surprisingly some crystals on the third. Corvus asks "Hey, what are the crystals about?"
"Well, if you must know, it's to do with what you requested. You wanted a wand that is a bit more battle focused, and these crystals make the wand they are in more powerful."
"Ok, I think I've got it, so crystals make them powerfully but are taboo because they are battle focused?" Corvus inquires
"Correct, now let's get started." The man leads Corvus to the first table full of different types of wood. Corvus feels the different woods and picks out two again. "Hmm, interesting" the man says. "Onto the next table." Corvus follows him to the table full of different types of animal parts, picking two types of a feather this time. "Should work, Should work they are cousins after all." Finally, they walk to the third table, and Corvus feels all of the different crystals he has he picks two up trying to decide but eventually putting them both next to the wand materials. "That is quite surprising," the man says. "Would you be so kind as to leave me be for a while whilst I work on this? Oh and before you go I have to ask, do you want the trace to be removed from this wand so that you can use it whilst outside school?"
"Yes, I would very much like that. I will return in a couple of hours and will test it out. Thank you very much, sir." Corvus replies quickly.
Corvus exits the shop and spends some time looking around the strange ally. He goes to a general goods store and browses around. In there he sees four things he wants; a book about occlumency and legilimency, a book about dark magics, a book about the only known magical ghoul and a ring. What caught his attention about the ring was the little thunderbolt in the Crystal, and so he asked the store clerk about it. The store clerk said that it was a ring that controlled lightning, but nobody bought it as no-one trusted it. He made the purchase of the three books and the ring and went back to Diagon Ally whilst he had time to kill. He went to Zonko's joke shop and bought some dung bombs and sugar quills. He then visited Flourish and Blotts and convinced the owner to let him but some books about silent and wandless casting. Finally, be went to the ice cream parlour and read for a bit whilst eating ice cream. When he had read for long enough, he went back to the wand shop.
As he entered, he saw a man with long golden hair having his cane inspected. Corvus thought that was weird and so took a closer look without letting anyone see or hear him, and he saw that the cane was also a wand holster and instead he was getting his wand inspected. Corvus silently walked back out without being spotted, and when the man finally came out, he didn't even notice Corvus waiting on the wall next to the door.
He entered again, and this time rang the bell. The old man ran out and saw Corvus standing there. "Hello again, is my wand ready?" Corvus asked.
"Ahh yes, and what a fine piece of art it is. It is made out of aspen and blackthorn. It has a brilliant combination of thunderbird tail feather and Phoenix tail feather. The two gems Tanzanite and Ruby worked well together with the Tanzanite being of thunder and Ruby being of power. It is 11 inches and has a springy feeling to it; it also does not have the trace on it. I think it will do you good." The man explained enthusiastically.
Corvus takes the wand and inspects it; the two kinds of wood, work in tandem with each other and flow seamlessly. The cores feel as if they have known each other and Corvus for their entire life. The gems were crushed down into a fine powder and infused into the wood which gives it a dull glowing effect and the wand itself feels comfortable to hold. When Corvus casts a Lumos with it, it lights up the entire room with a light so bright it could outshine the sun. "I love it!" Corvus excitedly shouts.
He pays for the wand and asks if he could have two holsters, one for each wand. He pays for the holsters which protect against disarming and conceals the wands when they are placed on him. He gives each holster a typical try and decides there should be one on each wrist so that they are easily accessible.
He gets back to the leaky cauldron safely and tells Tom the bartender about how good his day out was. He then starts to help out around the bar for the rest of the night.
For Christmas day Corvus got a couple of books about spells from McGonagall, some prank items from the twins and some chocolate from Tom for helping out. Corvus continued to have fun and help out for the rest of his holiday.
Authors note: Hey guys, thanks for reading. As always, let me know if you think of things I could be doing better. I should have said this at the start, but this is a fanfic where the main character is op. Anyway, have fun and stay safe. Bye.
