The Way Home
It was hot, sweltering in fact. It was on record as one of the hottest days England had seen in over a century. Despite the intense heat, he sat on a small swing at the dilapidated park as the sun beat down on his pale skin. That park had once been a place of wonderful memories for him but had long since been drowned by a sea of regrets and heartache.
It was where he once played with his best friend almost every day during the summer months, now, it was nothing more when an empty shell of that once joyful time. It became a place where users came to feed their addictions, teenagers spraying graffiti on what was left of the play equipment, and it was where he came to put an end to his miserable existence.
He had tried many times throughout the years too and his misery, but could never gather the courage. Things were different this time however, The Dark Lord was finally gone, Lily was avenged, and The Boy-Who-Lived escaped death yet again. He was meant to die, he wanted to die, and while he lay motionless, in agonizing pain on the floor of the Shrieking Shack he thought he would. The pain, the suffering, it would finally be over and once again he would see his love- in death. Fate however is cruel and somehow forced him to survive.
It had been several weeks since that day but now he was finally alone. Away from healers, from Potter and Granger who for reasons unknown to him made sure he was given the best medical care. As much as he wished for death to come to him, for some reason his body would not let go. His only consolation was that he knew eventually when he was well enough, they would finally allow him to go home.
That was today. This very day, as he sat on an old rusted swing, his wand to his temple he pushed away the pain and brought forth the innocent years of his youth to the forefront of his mind. Taking long walks with Lily, telling her all about the wizarding world. Practicing magic and simply playing as children do.
Cokeworth was where he began his life and it would be where he ended it. Right there in that very park, in a place where he had many of his happiest memories, memories he shared with the only girl he ever loved.
"Sev."
His breath caught at the sound of her voice, her beautiful, angelic voice. Dropping his wand to the browning, overgrown grass he looked up. His eyes widened, his thin lips pulled to a weak smile. "Lily."
She was there, within arm's length, her emerald eyes shined like jewels and she looked lovingly into his defeated, brown gaze.
"It's time to go, Sev." She held out her hand, and without hesitation he took it.
As he stood from the swing he instantly pulled his love into a tight, emotion filled hug. "I'm sorry, I'm so eternally sorry. I never meant for-for any of this to happen. I tried to keep you safe. Lily I...I love you."
"I know, Sev." She reassured him, "I always have." As his hug loosened she once again took his hand. "Come on," She said wiping a stray tear that had fallen to his cheek, "I'll show you the way home."
Together they walked through their field of happy childhood memories and faded into the ever after.
A/N: I was kind of in a sad mood when I wrote, sorry, but I think it's quite moving.
