6. The 78th Hunger Games

The 78th Hunger Games

Something very mysterious had happened in the Capitol between the time of the 77th and 78th games. Two months after Splash's victory, one of President Coriolanus Snow's good friend Charisma O'Shay had been killed in her apartment, being stabbed in the stomach and then a number, 1, being written on her wall in her own blood. Five months after that, Allor's personal lawyer, Othello Miskanson, had been killed in a waiting room, he had a piece of fabric wrapped around his mouth and had been stabbed in the heart, this time, a number 2 had been painted onto the wall, in his blood. Three weeks after that, the Head Peacekeeper of District 4 had been killed in his own bedroom, a number 3 being written onto the wall in his blood. Investigators found no trace of fingerprints or weapons on any of the three victims, making the case extremely confusing.

Allor returned for her third year as Head Gamemaker. For the first month or so, Allor was stuck on what the arena could be, until she was abstract-mindedly doodling on a napkin at a restaurant, waiting for her meal when she saw she had drawn an obelisk sort of shape, that was when the idea for her arena sparked to life. The next day she and her Gamemaker crew began building a huge obelisk as the next arena. It was exactly 1000 feet tall and a blueish black colour and the surface of it was at a 40-degree tilt, the only large flat part being the Cornucopia area at the very top of it. The arena also wasn't a perfect obelisk, with the occasional bit dipping outwards or inwards were tributes could shelter on/in. There was a thick purple fog surrounding the obelisk which made it so tributes couldn't see further than 30 feet in any direction. If you got to the obelisks bottom, you would only see a sea of poisonous, blue water which would kill you almost instantly after going into it.

The Career Pack was back to a full six members. The District 1 Male was originally going to be in the Career Pack the year prior, but Tarquin had volunteered before him, he was allowed to volunteer began and did it successfully this time, he was good with a kama, earning him a nine. The District 1 Female was the weakest Career that year, her weapon of choice was a throwing axe. District 2 was getting extremely annoyed about their second-place curse and sent in their strongest trainee, he was the leader and was amazing with chakrams. The District 2 Female wasn't as strong, but she was still pretty powerful specializing in a double-bladed axe, the Capitol also particularly liked her for her bloodthirstiness. The Pair from District 4 went to the same school and were sparing partners, but much to many Capitolites' dismay, they had no romantic feelings for each other. The District 4 Male was your stereotypical popular surfer, he was great with a broadsword. The District 4 Female was shier and more unknown compared to her district partner, but like her district partner, she also used a broadsword. The Packs scores were slightly under average, with them scoring one ten, four nines and one eight.

There was another Anti-Career Pack this year, it consisted of the Girl from 6; who was added into it for her brute strength, the Boy from 7; who was added into the pack for his ability to use a hatchet and the Boy from 10 who was the leader of the pack; he was in the pack because of his proficiency with a sword.

The Arena

The tributes rose up onto the arena, many of them confused to what it was supposed to be, they could onto see the Cornucopia in front of them and a big drop behind them. The gong rang and only one tribute ran away from the Cornucopia, Begonia from 12. The other twenty-three tributes rushed into the fray.

Emperor was the first to the Cornucopia, he picked up two spiked chakrams and flung them at the small boy from the technology district, one hit him in the side and the other hit him directly in the forehead, killing him almost instantly.

24th- Freqwenci Jacquart (District 3 Male) killed by Emperor (2) – Bloodbath

Lakely got to the Cornucopia next, he picked up a broadsword and began running towards a small boy gathering small supplies into an equally small bag. Lakely plunged the sword into the boy's neck, killing him rather quickly.

23rd- Arnit Le Doran (District 12 Male) killed by Lakely (4) – Bloodbath

Emperor pulled his chakrams out of Freqwenci and flung them at the girl from 6, she narrowly avoided them, and the chrakrams flew off into the distance, eventually landing in the poisonous water.

Aluminium and Laguna both got to the Cornucopia at the same time. Aluminium scanned through it for a few seconds before finding the kama he desired. He picked it up and began chasing after a boy zigzagging across the Cornucopia field.

Meanwhile, Laguna had retrieved a broadsword and quickly homed in on a small girl. She cut a deep gash into the helpless girl's side and the girl began to cry as everything inside of her began to come out.

22nd- Lampha Roberto (District 5 Female) killed by Laguna (4) – Bloodbath

Aluminium finally caught up to the boy and grabbed him by the neck. Aluminium slit the boy's throat giving him a quick death.

21st- Damask Trimodal (District 8 Male) killed by Aluminium (1) – Bloodbath

Amor and Curajos where the last Careers to the Cornucopia. They both grabbed their own axes and began hunting for victims.

Emperor had jogged over to the edge of the flat area to see what happened to his chakrams. Chicago and Halcyon saw him do this and seized their opportunity to get rid of the strongest tribute in the game.

Halcyon grabbed a sword from the Cornucopia and plunged it into Emperor's back, making the Career drop to his knees. Chicago finished him off by kicking him off the edge, he began sliding down the obelisk on his face, landing in the poisonous water about a minute later.

20th- Emperor McLionel (District 2 Male) killed by Chicago (6) & Halcyon (10) – Bloodbath

Ion was frozen in fear after witnessing the death of his ally, Arnit. Which made him an easy kill for Curajos. She plunged her axe into the frail boy, letting him bleed out silently.

19th- Ion Cardiff (District 5 Male) killed by Curajos (2) – Bloodbath

Amor saw the girl from the lumber district searching through a backpack making her an easy target. She flung her throwing axe at her, hitting the girl directly in the back, it punctured several of her organs, gradually killing her.

18th- Sitka Laderman (District 7 Male) killed by Amor (1) – Bloodbath

Lakely and Laguna had partnered together for their next kill. They saw the pair from eleven gathering supplies around the back of the Cornucopia, and saw them as prey, easy to kill. In union, they plunged their swords into the girl's back, making the boy scream and run away down the obelisk.
"I'll keep hunting up here, you get that kid ok?" Lakely said to Laguna, leaving before she could reply.

17th- Malus Pumila Redell (District 11 Female) killed by Lakely (4) & Laguna (4) – Bloodbath

Aluminium and Curajos both ran towards a small girl from opposite directions, Aluminium slitting her throat and Curajos planting the axe in her back at the exact same time. They both argued to each other about who actually made the kill for a few minutes as the girl died.

16th- Askanisky Yeboah (District 10 Female) killed by Aluminium (1) & Curajos (2) – Bloodbath

Halcyon was thinking, he had already killed one Career, but why stop there? He rushed towards Amor, who was searching through a crate, and stabbed her through the back, the sword's blade piercing all the way through her that it came out of her front. She bled out half a minute later, giving Halcyon the penultimate kill of the Bloodbath.

15th- Amor Sallow-Littlestone (District 1 Female) killed by Halcyon (10) – Bloodbath

Laguna made the final kill. She had finally caught up to Akrin and stabbed him in the back. He touched his back in pain and then stared at Laguna in his dying moments.
"Mom?" he asked as a tear rolled down his eye.
He touched Laguna's face softly and moved his hand down to her chin, covering it with his blood accidentally. Laguna put his hands in an 'x' across his chest, then let him rest on a flat piece of land.
"I'm sorry." she whispered.

14th- Akrin Moliyan (District 11 Male) killed by Laguna (4) - Bloodbath

Eleven cannons went off, marking the end of the Bloodbath. The three Careers at the Cornucopia got to work stacking the nine bodies that were there and sorting the remaining supplies, well Aluminium and Curajos did, Lakely was too worried about what had happened to Laguna. The surviving Careers had all seen Amor's body and they were beginning to think that both Emperor and Laguna had received the same fate.

About half an hour after the Bloodbath ended, Laguna finally came up, but she was in the middle of having a mental breakdown. Lakely comforted her whilst she cried about killing innocent children and that she wished neither of them had been picked to go into the games.

Calibri had gotten a backpack from the Bloodbath and then left instantly, she found out that the backpack was full to the brim with food, water, blankets, even a pair of suction cups and a knife, she went about half way down to obelisk before resting on a flat area of it and falling asleep. Boeing had grabbed a piece of bread and a sheet of foil before running away into the nearest cave to the Cornucopia, exhausted. The Anti-Career Pack were pretty happy with themselves; they had killed off two Careers bringing the Career Pack down to four members, they had gone about a fifth the way down to obelisk before resting in a cave area. Cross-stitch had managed to get a kunai from the Cornucopia, so she felt slightly safer around the arena than she had thought she would be. Kansas and Ayve, the duo from District 9, had decided to ally before the games begun, they had managed to get: a pair of suction cups; one for each of them, a sickle and two backpacks full of everything they need to survive, they managed to make it about a third of the way down the obelisk before deciding to rest. Begonia had a lead from the others that went into the Cornucopia, but decided to stop moving surprisingly early, resting in a small cave about a sixth the way down the obelisk.

Day 2 began and the Career Pack wasn't doing so good, Aluminium and Curajos were arguing non-stop about who was the leader of the Pack, Laguna still wasn't doing to well; she hadn't gotten any sleep and couldn't stop thinking about the children she killed and their faces whilst she was watching The Fallen. They decided Laguna would stay behind and Lakely would take care of her whilst Aluminium and Curajos would hunt.

Aluminium and Curajos found a tribute pretty quickly. It was Boeing from 6, they quickly cornered him and killed him, and then argued about who's kill it was.

13th- Boeing Thivierge (District 6 Male) killed by Aluminium (1) & Curajos (2) – Day 2

As the duo walked back, Aluminium tripped and slid down the obelisk for about 30 feet before landing on a flat part. This made Curajos laugh before she also slipped and landed on top of him.

Calibri made it all the way to the bottom of the obelisk, as she was about to touch the water, she was sent a sponsor from her mentor, Wiress, urging her to not touch the water, Calibri obliged, it must be important if she was sent a sponsor note. The Anti-Career Pack moved upwards, towards the Cornucopia, were they knew at least one Career would be, they put themselves in a position where they knew a Career would find them so they could attack. Cross-stitch had wondered into a particularly deep cave and found blankets and a large water bottle full to the brim waiting for her, she set up a small base there, and never strayed far from it in case she lost the spot. The duo from 9 went on a small hunting trip, but came back unsuccessful, it seemed as though everyone in the arena was extremely spaced out. Begonia was put into dismay after seeing her district partner's face in the sky, but other than that, nothing really changed for her.

Day 3 was completely deathless, partially because the amount of time they actually hunted equivalated to the time it took the Bloodbath to end. Aluminium's mentor, Crown, even sent him a note saying:
"You're not making any progress arguing. Unless you want the games to be three weeks long, I would recommend you start working together."
Aluminium took the advice the wrong way and began setting up a voting booth for who they wanted to be the leader of the pack.

Calibri silently waited at the edge of the arena, she was slightly surprised on how there hadn't been any cannons in such a small arena. The Anti-Careers were confused on how not a single Career had seen them yet, but they decided that it was just luck. Cross-stitch stayed at her camp, not worrying about a single thing in the world. Kansas and Ayve's supplies were beginning to dwindle, they tried not to think about what would happen if they did. Begonia was beginning to feel the effects of thirst curling up into a ball and hoping for the best.

It became Day 4 and Allor could tell the Capitolites were already getting bored, so she started an arena event that would continue for the majority of the game, the water began to climb higher up the arena, it wasn't anything major, just half a metre an hour, but it would slowly increase over time.

At around noon Aluminium finally finished the voting booth and the four of them began casting their votes. Aluminium voted for himself, Curajos voted for herself and Lakely and Laguna both agreed to vote for Lakely, somehow making Lakely the leader of the Career Pack. Lakely told Aluminium and Curajos to wait at the Cornucopia with Laguna whilst Lakely went on a little hunting trip for any tributes nearby.

After about an hour of searching, he found Begonia sleeping in her cave, she looked like she was about to die of thirst anyway, so Lakely killed her peacefully, slitting her throat.

12th- Begonia Caamano (District 12 Female) killed by Lakely (4) – Day 4

When Lakely returned, he was sponsored a basket full of sugar cubes, a call back to Finnick Odair of the 65th Hunger Games and his sweet tooth for sugar cubes.

Calibri was the first person to notice that the water level was increasing as she was the closest to it, so she remembers to move ten metres up when she slept, just in case. The Anti-Careers were amazed that the Careers still hadn't found them, and they even had a little search of their own, with no luck of course. Cross-stitch went on an hour-long hunting trip in search of tributes but didn't find anyone. The 9s moved farther down the obelisk to distance themselves from nearing Careers, they were sponsored a loaf of bread and two water bottles to keep them alive for a little longer.

The Careers went hunting early on Day 5, eager to find more tributes and get the games over with, Lakely staying behind to guard the Cornucopia.

The Anti-Careers heard mumbling in the distance and decided to investigate it. Sure enough, they saw Aluminium, Curajos and Laguna talking to each other as they walked down the obelisk. It was time for Woodchip to put his hatchet into use. He waited for the right moment before throwing it at them in full speed. He heard the sound of metal hitting flesh as the hatchet dug into Aluminium's back. Aluminium dropped to his knees and his body became frail, he began sliding down the obelisk at full speed, faster than anybody in the arena could run and shot into the poisonous water with a splash just under a minute later.

11th- Aluminium Dodson (District 1 Male) killed by Woodchip (7) – Day 5

As Curajos stared downwards in horror, Laguna caught a glimpse of Woodchip running away.

"Did you see who did it?" Curajos asked a few minutes later.

"Boy from 7, the one in the Anti-Careers." Laguna replied.

They walked back up to the Cornucopia and broke the news to Lakely and they began strategizing on how they were going to kill the Anti-Careers, a lot of which had to be censored out in the replays as it was so violent, even on a network where you're witnessing twenty-three kids die.

Calibri began measuring the time the water took to rise and realised it was gradually speeding up, so she trekked upwards for twenty minutes to be safer, almost slipping and going into the water halfway up. The Anti-Careers were overjoyed that they had killed half of the Career Pack in such a short time, they got sponsored a dozen muffins, which Halcyon recognised as his mother's cooking, they all had one each and saved the other nine for later, then they moved to a different location further down the obelisk in case . Cross-stitch began to run low on food but being from one of the poorer areas of District 8, she could stay strong without needing it. The Pair From 9 began to walk lower down the obelisk, before Kansas tripped and fell onto a flat area, spraining his ankle.

The mood within the Career Pack was pretty low on the morning of Day 6 since half of their members died.
Lakely saw this and tried to lighten the mood.
"Look, I know this doesn't look good, but we're still the strongest tributes in the games, right?" he said.
"I know your trying to be positive, but no, we're weak. What do we have? A surfer, a pacifist and a person that's just been arguing for the entire games." Curajos replied.

The only person to hunt that day was Curajos, who hunted around the area Aluminium died, but found nobody.

Calibri continued to stay near the water, there was a moment that day where she thought she saw someone, but just deemed it as a hallucination. The Anti-Careers continued to move down the obelisk, stopping about halfway down. Cross-stitch continued to stay in the base, her stomach rumbling. The 9 duo were running out of food, they would be fine if there was just one of them, but neither of them were willing to let that happen.

There was a death on Day 7. Lakely and Curajos hunted whilst Laguna guarded the Cornucopia. Cross-stitch had been out, seeing if there was anything more to the arena than the obelisk. Unfortunately, the Careers had been hunting in the area she was in, and when they saw her, they instantly began attacking her. Curajos flung her axe at Cross-stitch, hitting her in the side and immobilizing the poor girl, Lakely finished her off by stabbing his broadsword through her heart.

10th- Cross-stitch Iske (District 8 Female) killed by Curajos (2) & Lakely (4) – Day 7

After Cross-stitch's death, the Careers felt a bit better about themselves, but they still weren't exactly happy.

Calibri was beginning to become a bit cuckoo after being alone for a week straight now, running around in circles and almost convincing herself to jump into the water. The Anti-Career's ate three more of Halcyon's mother's cookies and continued to move downwards. Kansas and Ayve had stayed where they were for the most part, Kansas' ankle was still looking pretty bad.

Allor decided that there would be a feast on the tenth day to bring the tributes together and potentially get a few more deaths in.

Day 8 had another death, another outlier. Curajos was guarding the Cornucopia whilst Lakely hunted, Laguna reluctantly coming with him. The duo from 4 eventually found the duo from 9 resting. When Ayve saw them, she screamed at Kansas to run, before realising he couldn't and watched helplessly as he got speared in the chest by a broadsword. Ayve sprinted away before she could have the same fate.

9th- Kansas Farrowgrass (District 9 Male) killed by Lakely (4) – Day 8

That left the final eight: Curajos ChavarrÍa from District 2, Calibri Farrugia from District 3, Lakely Ugulava and Laguna Vinson from District 4, Chicago Hanberry from District 6, Woodchip Labombard from District 7, Ayve Isbjorn from District 9 and Halcyon Ochoa from District 10.

The rest of Day 8 was uneventful, with everybody just staying to themselves. Apparently, Day 9 was equally uneventful, as nobody died that day.

Calibri had been sponsored a book about a cow's anatomy to keep her entertained and prevent her from going entirely insane. The Anti-Careers were beginning to become nervous, as there were still the full three of them left in the final eight, but they agreed they would only separate when all of the Careers were gone. Ayve was grieving at the death of Kansas, she vowed to not rest until Lakely died, which was a promise she kept.

At noon on Day 10, the feast was announced by Allor. The feast was a bit different to normal, instead of having bags for individual districts, they had four bags, one for the Careers, one for District 3, one for the Anti-Careers and one for District 9.

The Careers were the first to the feast, grabbing their bag and then hiding out in the back of the Cornucopia. The Anti-Careers arrived a few minutes later, as Woodchip went to grab the bag, Laguna pounced, he was the one that killed Aluminium after all. Laguna jumped onto the boy from the district of lumber and stabbed him through the heart with a broadsword, ultimately killing him.

8th- Woodchip Labombard (District 7 Male) killed by Laguna (4) – Day 10

In reaction, Halcyon pulled his sword out of his belt and plunged it into Laguna's neck, avenging Woodchip.

7th- Laguna Vinson (District 4 Female) killed by Halcyon (10) – Day 10

Then the real fight began, Chicago and Curajos began duelling each other, Lakely and Halcyon doing the same. The four of them continued fighting without stopping for over twenty minutes, until Lakely tripped on his own feet, Halcyon seized his chance and stabbed Lakely through the head, killing him in a matter of seconds.

6th- Lakely Ugulava (District 4 Male) killed by Halcyon (10) – Day 10

Curajos' face showed an expression of untamed anger, Halcyon saw this and screamed at Chicago to run. Chicago tried to, but Curajos grabbed her by the waist and disarmed her.
"Go! Go without me!" Chicago screamed, before Curajos put her hand around her mouth and slowly tutted.
Halcyon did as Chicago requested, running down the obelisk with the Anti-Careers bag and his sword. After that, Curajos tied Chicago to the floor, by her wrists, ankles and waist. Curajos slowly slit the girl from the transportation district's wrists, then stabbed knives into places all around her body, Curajos finished Chicago off by plunging a knife into her neck, killing her in under a minute.

5th- Chicago Hanberry (District 6 Female) killed by Curajos (2) – Day 10

Amidst all of that, Ayve had somehow managed to grab her bag and run away unnoticed by the other tributes.

Allor didn't expect half of the remaining tributes to die in the feast, she was nervous of what Snow might do to her if the games failed, but the citizens of the Capitol seemed happy, which made Snow happy, which made Allor happy.

Curajos stared off into the distance for most of the remainder of the day, she was the last of the Careers and it was the first time she had been alone in a long, long time. Calibri didn't bother to go to the feast at all, she knew it would be a death sentence if she went up there and it would take far too long anyway, Calibri put on a smug smile when she heard the four cannons go off after the end of the feast. Ayve still missed Kansas, but her mood was lightened a bit due to the fact that she got her bag, inside of it was some food, a bottle of water and a pair of her own suction cups, making it easier to navigate the arena. Halcyon was beginning to realise how the Careers felt, he was in quite a lot of distress due to the fact that both of his allies had died within half an hour of each other, he stayed determined though, he had done five sixths of his job and he wasn't about to give up.

Day 11 was surprisingly, deathless. Curajos spent most of the day crying and mourning over her dead allies and the rest of the day eating and drinking. Calibri knew the finale was coming near, so she began moving upwards, away from the edge of the obelisk. Ayve settled somewhere around the middle point of the obelisk, nibbling on her food. Halcyon stayed somewhere around three-quarters up the obelisk, his only supplies were the six remaining cookies, his sword and everything that was in the Anti-Career bag, which Chicago was wearing when she died, the items inside the Anti-Career bag were a shield for himself, a spare hatchet for Woodchip and some water for Chicago.

The water was now going faster than ever, rising two feet in just an hour.

Calibri kept climbing non-stop, in fact, she climbed so hight that around 1PM on Day 12, she accidentally walked all the way to the Cornucopia, her mild insanity making her unaware of how long she had actually been walking. Curajos instantly noticed her and flung her axe into the crazed girl without a second thought.

4th- Calibri Farrugia (District 3 Female) killed by Curajos (2) – Day 12

After Calibri's death, the finale was instantly announced to occur early in the morning on Day 13. Curajos stayed at the Cornucopia, she knew she had the upper hand, having trained for the finale most of her life. Ayve wasn't exactly sure what she'd do at the finale, her only weapon was a small knife and she was clearly the weakest, she just hoped that she would get lucky, there had been younger victors than her right? Finnick won when he was fourteen, and Ayve was sixteen. Halcyon was going to eliminate Curajos and then it would be plain sailing from there, he sharpened his sword, ready for what was going to happen.

The finale of the thirteenth day actually happened earlier than expected, happening even before the early birds of the Capitol had had their breakfast. Ayve and Halcyon arrived at the Cornucopia practically at the same time. Curajos jumped down from the top of the Cornucopia and instantly chopped her axe into Ayve's chest, Ayve bled out under a minute later.

3rd- Ayve Isbjorn (District 9 Female) killed by Curajos (2) – Day 13

From there, it was just the last Career and the last Anti-Career to battle it out for survival, which deeply excited the Capitolites. The two of them duelled continuously for twenty minutes before Curajos plunged her axe at Halcyon, who managed to duck out of the way, making Curajos' axe get lodged into the floor. Curajos attempted to grab another axe from the Cornucopia, but Halcyon grabbed her by the collar of her shirt and speared her through the chest with his sword.
"Heh. District 2 comes second again." Curajos laughed.
Her cannon shot.

2nd- Curajos ChavarrÍa (District 2 Female) killed by Halcyon (10) – Day 13

"Halcyon, you are the victor of the 78th Annual Hunger Games!" Allor announced.

Halcyon sighed, before getting lifted up by the hovercraft, along with Ayve and Curajos' corpses.
