The Malfoy family is a long and prestigious line of purebloods. For the most part, they are well respected. Their money can get them nearly anything. So, it would make sense for their reunions to be just as extravagant as everything else they do. Of course, most pureblood wizarding families are related somewhere along the line. Unless, of course, someone has been disowned. So, when Narcissa began planning for the annual Malfoy reunion, she spared no expense. The finest of everything at the finest of locations, their manor. This year was supposed to be different though. Narcissa hadn't seen her son since the end of the second wizarding war. So, when she received a return to her invite stating he would be bringing a special guest for the family to meet, Narcissa went all out. She invited everyone on the family tree (all those that were acceptable that is.)
When the evening arrived, Narcissa and her husband Lucius waited anxiously for any sign of their only son. One might wonder why he left in the first place. Well, when the war ended, Draco refused to plead innocent at his trial. He was adamant to pay for the crimes he committed. It drove the defense lawyers up the wall. He had the easiest case of them all, yet he refused all the same. It wasn't until an unknown person took it upon herself to get him free. This person was not a lawyer but was more successful than any of them had been. Somehow unknown to the world, this person convinced Draco to fight for himself. In the end, he won the case. However, he wasn't seen since. It was rumored that he had run off with the young lady that convinced him to fight in the first place.
Pansy Parkinson watched the door. She had been told by Narcissa that Draco was coming and she was determined to get her boyfriend back. When the doors did open, Draco walked in with a lovely girl at his side. Draco was dressed in a deep navy blue dress shirt and black trousers. The girl was dressed in an emerald green dress with a silver belt and sweetheart neckline. Her hair was in an exact updo with diamond clips and her eyes a deep brown. Pansy, ignoring the closeness between the two, rushed over to him.
"Draco! It's been years. Where did you go off to?"
Draco turned to look at his ex-girlfriend, "Away. A good friend convinced me to fight for myself saying…"
He was cut off by the woman beside him, "'Draco Lucius Malfoy, what good is sitting in Azkaban going to do anyone? You have the power to change people's lives, to help them get back on their feet and you decided to sit and rot in prison. Instead of wasting your life, do something good, like when you saved Harry from being recognized. Would a real Slytherin just give up? Stop sulking around and get off your butt.' were my exact words."
"Why do you still remember that? It was 3 years ago!"
"I spent a week preparing that speech, and someone has to remember my handy work, you silly ferret."
Draco rolled his eyes at the nickname but Pansy became enraged, "How dare you speak to him like that?! He could have you destroyed."
The woman waved it off, "He would have a hard time destroying me. What do you say we talk to your parents Draco? That is the whole reason you brought me here."
She shivered. Draco wrapped an arm around the woman in a way that would be reassuring. If there was any reason to reassure her that is.
Narcissa saw her one and only child the moment he walked in the door. It took everything in her to refrain from running across the room. A mother never forgets her child. Lucius saw him too. However, his response was quite different from his wife. He scowled, how dare he return. Narcissa watched anxiously as Pansy buzzed around her boy and the (rather attractive) woman by his side. She could hardly control her containment when Draco headed in her direction, one arm embracing the woman tightly.
"Mother, Father," Draco nodded to each of them in turn.
Lucius gave the slightest nod of recognition while Narcissa pulled Draco to her in a suffocating hug, despite being much smaller than him. Draco, being the good son as always, hugged her back. This left the woman standing alone. Without the comfort of the arm around her, she became anxious and rubbed her left forearm. She seemed uneasy and slightly out of place in the room of confident Wizards and Witches. Lucius scoffed at her lack of confidence, clearly not the correct woman for his son.
The Mother, Son reunion hug was cut short when Draco remembered his guest and her awkward situation. He disentangled himself from Narcissa and quickly returned his arm around the woman's shoulders.
"I thought you would like to meet the one responsible for my freedom," Draco said, looking his father in the eye.
Lucius raised an aristocratic eyebrow, "And how would an uncertain girl like this manage to get you out of Azkaban?"
The woman opened her mouth to stand up for herself but Draco cut her off, "She can be very persuasive. She has a lot of influence on those in high places."
"And where have you been all these years, leaving your mother without any note. All the papers said was that you were found innocent, Merlin knows how."
"If you'll excuse me a moment, Mr. Malfoy," the woman started, "the hardest part of Draco's case was getting him to fight. Draco had a very solid case in his favor. I will admit though, having important friends is helpful. I would also like to say, I'm usually a rather confident person, but I am uncomfortable in this place."
Draco tightened his grip around her. Lucius narrowed his eyes, ladies were like children, they were for looks, not to add to the conversation.
"Tell me about yourself then. What makes you worthy of the company of my son?"
Draco opened his mouth to point out that he owed her his life but the woman refrained him, "I was top of my class in Hogwarts, I have more power with the ministry than you could dream of, and I have an order of Merlin First Class."
Narissa looked impressed but Lucius scoffed again, women are not supposed to have power.
"I have an announcement I would like to make to everyone," Draco stated.
He pulled the woman with him to the front of the room where he used a charm to amplify his voice.
"Good evening everyone, I have an announcement. Yes, I'm aware it is a shock to see me, I've been gone for quite some time. So, I find it only fair to explain what happened before I disappeared. You see, 3 years ago, I was facing charges of being a death eater, as most of you here did."
Draco rolled up his left shirt sleeve to reveal his dark mark tattoo before continuing, "Some of you claimed to be under the imperious curse, others claimed to have no other choice. However, I decided to pay for what I did. I was done lying and would gladly accept the punishment for my actions. That is until I got a visit from a friend. She was there for me in a time when I was falling apart."
Draco paused and shared a look with the woman at his side, both remembering the day she found him curled up on the bathroom floor.
"She saved my life. Without her, I would have surely died long ago. She came and visited me in my cell at the ministry. She asked me a question, a one similar to one she asked me back in my third year, 'what is it worth?' What good was sitting in Azkaban going to do anybody? She convinced me to fight. She put together a case by collecting memories and, believe it or not, got Harry Potter to witness in my favor. By her brains, she got me out of my fate. We ran off together after the trial. Since then we've graduated from Hogwarts, got married, and have a 3-month-old girl. So, without further ado, I would like to introduce to you, Hermione Granger Malfoy."
Every eye in the room widened. Pansy screeched in anger, Lucius began yelling obscenities at his son (how dare he spoil the Malfoy line!) and Narcissa was crying happy tears. She caught her son's eye and smiled at him.
It is said a Mother knows her children better than anyone and in Draco and Narcissa's case, that was very true. Narcissa had known about Draco's crush on Hermione since his third year. He had come home ranting about her. 'Oh, she's such a crazy thing. All she ever does is read, read, read. Yesterday she was reading Hogwarts: A History for the seventh time. Her hair is just hideous. Ugh, and she is so violent.' She couldn't be prouder of her son. Not every death eater goes on to marry a muggle-born. He fought for the girl he wanted and learned so much from her.
Draco returned his mother's smile before apparating away with his wife.
