A/N: Here is chapter 14. Thank you so much for the reviews.
In this story, Ellis wasn't admitted when she was in the show. In fact, the whole episode did not take place. Hope you enjoy!
I do not own Grey's Anatomy. Please review!
It was a seemingly regular day at Seattle Grace. Meredith had come in alone as Mark had an early surgery. As she stepped into the OR floor, having chnaged into her scrubs, she was met by her boyfriend. He pulled her into a hug and gave her a kiss.
"How was surgery?" Meredith asked.
"Pulled it off without a hitch. I AM the best, you know." Mark said, proud and bit arrogant about his skill.
"Hmm.. I missed you in bed this morning, though." Meredith mumbled.
"I will make it up to you. Date tonight, a dress will be on teh bed waiting for you." Mark said. He was taking her to the same restaurant he asked her to be his girlfriend. The booking was done, band arranged, ring bought and sized, flowers ready. He was nervous as hell.
Just as Mark leaned into kiss her once again, Bailey's voice was heard. "Grey, do you plan on being a doctor today or are you going to spend the day locking lips with your boyfriend?" She sarcastically asked.
"Coming Dr. Bailey." Meredith said and hurried after her. She met with her interns and took them on their rounds, and just when she was about to assign them their jobs for the day, her pager rang informing her about a case coming up from the ER.
"Let's go." She said. As Meredith was heading there, Derek stopped her for a second, wanting to talk about her trial. She adamantly shook her head, and told him she would talk later and was being paged. She was a second late, but just as she entered the vicinity she could hear her mother shouting, not making any sense.
Cristina had her chart and was shocked to see the name there. Meredith had never given her the slightest indication of what she was seeing.
"Patient's name." Bailey demanded. "Yang!" She shook the junior doctor out of her reverie.
"Ellis... Ellis Grey." All doctors stopped working at that. They were all not expecting that. Her friends turned to Meredith who escaped as soon as she saw the attention on her. She fled to the Residents Lounge to calm herself.
Bailey shouted some instructions at the nurses nd went after her former intern, followed closely by Yang, Karev and O'Malley. They all wanted to enter the lounge while Bailey was blocking the door.
On the other side of the hospital, Derek barged into Mark's office.
"You need to go see Meredith." Derek told Mark.
"What's wrong?" He asked, getting up.
"Ellis Grey is in the hospital." Derek told him. Mark sighed. That meant everyone knew or was about to.
"Look man, Ellis..." Mark started.
"Has Alzheimer's. I know." Mark raised his eyebrow at that. "Meredith told me before Addison came." Derek told, slightly wincing. "Richard saw me console her and found out about us."
"And called Addie for a consult." Mark finished. Derek shrugged and nodded. Mark went out of his office and walked to the surgical wing. He knew that if Meredith was not in his office, there was just one other place he would be at.
He saw her friends trying to push their way into the room and Dr. Bailey not budging an inch. Any other day, he would have found the funny, but not then. He made his way there.
"Move." He ordered the residents. They looked at him, and seeing his face thought better than to argue with him, not Dr. Bailey, though.
"Dr. Bailey. Move." He more serious than ever. She gave him a hard glance and then moved. "Take care of her." She whispered, and proceeded to give all the residents a few additional tasks.
Mark quickly went in and engulfed her in a tight hug. Mark whispered soothing words, trying to calm her down. Suddenly, Meredith shifted a little and wiped her tears. "I need a case. Please." She asked.
Mark nodded. "Wait here." He said and left in search of his childhood best friend. He didn't have any surgeries left for the day, only consults.
He made his way to Derek when he saw him in front of the OR board.
"I need a favour." He asked.
Derek nodded. "Put Meredith on a surgery. She needs to be distracted."
"I personally don't have a case." Mark groaned hearing that. "But, Dr. Nelson has a E.T.S. this afternoon. I can ask him to put her on it." Derek said.
"Can't you take it?" Mark requested.
Derek sighed and nodded. "I'll go tell him."
"Thanks, man. Just... in the OR..." Mark left off.
"Don't worry." Derek smiled. He would probably be hated by the doctor for this, but it was important.
He found out that Dr. Nelson was in the patient's room so, he paged Meredith there as well.
"Hello," He said as he entered. "Dr. Nelson, I have a few consults I need you to take for me. I'll proceed with this surgery." Just then Meredith came into the room. "Ms. Abraham, this is Dr. Grey. She will prep you for surgery."
"But I am the resident on this case." Came Izzie's voice. Derek hadn't seen her there.
"What is Dr. Stevens doing on your service?" He directed the question to the attending.
"I... She told me she was allowed." He mumbled.
"Lying to attendings now?" Derek asked her, angry.
"Well, at least I'm just lying to them, not with naked with them, unlike some other doctors in this room." Izzie smirked.
"Get out of this room. Now." Derek told to Izzie, who just scoffed and left. He went outside with her after telling Meredith to continue her job and placing an encouraging hand on her shoulder. "Meet me in the chief's office." He told Izzie and walked away.
Izzie waited outside the Chief's office waiting for Derek when she saw him, Mark and Addison come. They entered the room and told her to follow.
"What's going on?" Richard asked.
"You need to suspend Dr. Stevens from the program." Derek said, having had enough of her non sense.
"What!?" Izzie asked.
"What happened?" Richard asked calmly.
"Dr. Stevens once again personally attacked her fellow doctor in front of a patient." Derek said, angry. He had never seen a doctor display such level of unprofessional behaviour.
"She stole my patient." Izzie defended herself.
"Which she lied another attending doctor to get." Derek added. He had given strict instructions to all doctors in his department to not put Stevens on their cases.
"I'm done with her attacking Meredith, Richard." Mark said. "Today of all days for her to create more drama is too much." Mark was livid when Derek came to him.
"I heard. How is Meredith holding up?" He asked. He was shocked when Bailey came in and informed him of the hospital's newest patient. He even went to check up on her and made sure Alex and George knew what they were supposed to do.
"That's why I have her on a case. Keeping her distracted." Derek said.
Satisfied with the answer, he turned to Izzie. "What do you have to say for yourself?" Richard asked the resident.
"Dr. Shepherd banned me from Neuro. Dr. Sloan and Montgomery-Shepherd don't put me on their service. What should I do?" Izzie exclaimed. She was tired of being blacklisted.
"You should have thought about that before you purposefully tried to sabotage her." Addison said.
"You people always give her special treatment." Izzie accused.
"Enough!" Richard said. "You were given a strict warning last time you did something like this. I will not accept such behaviour in my hospital." Richard said. he sent an email to HR informing them of the latest dismissal and proceeded to ask the doctor to hand over her badge.
"It's a beautiful day to save lives, everyone." Derek stated as he and Meredith started the procedure.
The procedure went relatively smoothly, apart from when Alex came into the OR wanting Meredith to sign off on a few tests required for Ellis. She was shaken there for a minute, especially when she saw that it was for a biopsy for liver cancer, but she shook herself and concentrated on the surgery.
Derek did the best to distract her, continuously asking her questions and making her assist him. She smiled and thanked him for his help and scrubbed out once the procedure was completed.
After the surgery, she went and stood outside her mom's room, just observing. Mark came up behind her and held her, rubbing her shoulders and arms. Meredith leaned back into him, wanting the comfort it provided.
"I'm not up for a date tonight." She said.
"Already cancelled. Come on. Let's go to an on-call room." He knew she would stay the night, even though she wasn't yet entering Ellis' room.
"You don't-"
"I do. Come on." He pulled her into an empty room and lied down beside her. Meredith put her head on his chest as he patted her head, and played with her hair.
"She doesn't have liver cancer." Meredith said. "I thought if she did-"
"Her pain wouldn't be elongated. Liver cancer is fast." Mark said, understanding her point.
Just then, her pager started ringing. "What's wrong." Mark asked.
"It's Cristina." Meredith said hurriedly as she got up.
"What does she want at this time?" He asked confused.
"No. She is in surgery." Meredith said, panicked. Hearing this, Mark got up too ad followed her to the OR. He waited outside the scrub room and saw as Bailey did not allow her to enter.
"She won't let me..." Meredith said.
"It's okay. Is Addie operating?" He asked. Meredith nodded. "She is one of the best. Don't worry." Mark consoled her. "Let's go to the gallery." As they went up, they saw George standing in front of the gate.
"Dr. Bailey told me to be here. You can go in." He said, giving her a brief smile.
Mark led Meredith inside, and they sat down. Meredith rested her head on his shoulder as he got her to lean into him more. They quietly saw Addison carefully operate on Cristina and the entire surgery going through without complications. Meredith sighed in relief as the surgery was completed and went downstairs to be with her best friend.
She walked with her and got her settled in the room. Mark brought Meredith a cushion and a blanket and got her settled in too.
"I'll be in the on- call room if you need me." He whispered and kissed her goodnight.
Mark needed something from his office so he went to the administrative wing. On the catwalk, he met Addison and Derek.
"Hey. I'm guessing Meredith is in Yang's room." Addison asked.
"Yeah.. I'm gonna be in the on-call room too. Today has been..." Mark said. A lot happened, none of them good.
"You were gonna propose." Derek stated.
"I was... But now... let's see.." Mark shrugged. He knew she was in no state to be proposed to then. "I had everything set up. Flowers, her dress, all of it." He mumbled disappointed.
Derek suddenly started laughing. "I expected more from you, dude."
Mark just looked at him confused. "Seriously Mark, Meredith is not that girl." Addison agreed with her husband.
"So how should I propose?" Mark asked. Great! Even that isn't as ready. He thought, inwardly groaning.
"Don't ask me." Derek said. "I did it years back." Derek and Addie smiled.
"Do something that's special to her. Think." Addison encouraged.
"I should not have spoken to you two." Mark mumbled and walked, hearing the other two laugh behind him.
"Where is Meredith?" Derek asked Mark excited as he met with him at the nurses' station the next morning.
"with Yang... what's going on?" Mark asked.
Derek simply passed on the magazine in his hand to him. "This is the fastest an article has been printed. And she's on the cover page." Derek said.
"That's... shit! Dude! This is huge." Mark said, proud of his girlfriend. "Let's go."
As they entered the room they could hear the two friends talking and laughing. "Oh great. McDreamy and McSteamy are here to see me." yang sarcastically exclaimed.
"Well, how are you feeling?" Derek asked the resident.
"Just fine. Can you convince Bailey to let me work today?" Yang pleaded, desperate to get back to surgery.
"Nope." Mark replied. "Now. The reason we are here."
"So it's not me." Cristian interrupted, pretending to be hurt.
Derek simply turned the magazine for the residents to see. "Is that..." Meredith said, shocked.
"It is." Mark said, grinning widely.
"Shit! Mer!" Cristina exclaimed. Mark had pulled her into a bone crushing hug and even Derek hugged her to congratulate her. Meredith whispered a low 'thank you' to Derek, for all the help and support he provided her.
"Give it to me. I'm gonna read." Cristina snatched the magazine and turned the pages to read the article. The senior doctors again patted Meredith on the back, and left the room, letting the girls celebrate.
"I am surely asking in on Burke's next trial." Cristina said. "Or I'll have my own, like you." She said, showing her her tongue like a kid.
Meredith chuckled and got into bed beside Cristina as the two read the magazine and passed their time. Soon, Alex and George came in as well and were equally delighted to hear the great news.
A/N: So no proposal. Not yet. Let's see what happens in the next chapter!
