AN : Hey, I just wanted to put this here to create some hype about this small thing that I'm doing. I first created this back in mid-October before I even finished watching season one and just realized I haven't finished the story yet! This is horrendously unedited but will be replaced at a later date with the full one-shot!
The basic concept is a sort of Soulmate-like twist where young Amity casts an illusion spell when she was scared one night and she ends up meeting Luz for the first time in her dreams.
And throughout her life up until the actual show, she seeks her friendship for comfort.
(I can just see this having been a thing. I'm not sure why. Illusion Luz doesn't get enough credit in the show. I know it was only five seconds of airtime during the ep.5 (I believe, don't hate me if I'm wrong!), but still! She's awesome!)
There are many other things that happen in this one-shot that I'm not giving away quite yet, such as some sibling bonding and a weaponized spell book being burned... A bunch of dysfunctional family stuff happens (Nothing too triggering I don't think, just a bunch of kids ganging up on their dad for being non-existent and controlling, but there isn't anything in here like that))
I hope you stay tuned and enjoy this temp preview! - E
Her hand slowly takes hold of the small branch, and pays close attention to the closed bedroom door at the far end of the room as she holds the parchment paper towards the light. The magic gauge was full enough if she managed this.
She starts by reciting the motion in the back of her mind, the technique that she roughly scrawled out as well as the symbols necessary to pattern her motions off of. It takes a minute to coax herself to relax momentarily long enough to drop the paper to the floor, waving the wand almost like she was testing the action a few times before making sure to effectively swirl her hand in its circular motion, inhaling deeply and concentrating hard as she cuts a small circle into her vision, the circle glows a light purple and somehow she lets out a breath she didn't know she was holding in, almost dropping the wand in excitement. Part of her didn't believe she'd get it on the first attempt, but somehow she managed to.
The wand seems to ooze the same purple color from the tip, pinpointing the center of the ring before effectively shooting out an opaque lavender ray within the air in a wiry fashion. Darker purple rays, that almost seem like flames, drip down off of the ring as it continues to glow brightly, disappearing into nothing as they fall from the glowing spot. Successfully illuminating the entire room in purple.
The lavender wisp seems to sweep her from her seated position as it slams into her clothed chest, painless, but still somehow knocking the wind from her unknowing lungs as the glowing aura effectively consumes her vision seconds after the ring disappears into nothing. Letting the darkness of night resume its position across her bedroom walls once more.
It isn't but a second before she hears wearily the sound of the branch dropping to the floor beside her nightstand as her eyes lid themselves shut before her head even finds her pillow.
A strong abundance of calmness sweeps over her consciousness as the aura fades slowly into light blue, fitting over her mind like a blanket, a thick fluffy warm blanket that somehow soothes all of her previous fears. The color almost reminding her of the sea as the subtle remnants of salt touch the back of her taste buds while she unknowingly drifts off into the deepest sleep she's ever experienced in her short life.
Amity blinks her eyes open to her room, there's a rustling from across the room, but nothing out of the ordinary once she looks up briefly to check on what could possibly be an intruder. She's reading, her favorite book is held tightly in her hands as her golden irises roam freely over the colored and cartooned pages.
"Hey, what's your name?"
The question is so sudden, it makes Amity jump in fear, almost like she was scared she was caught. For what, she's not sure, but the book falls into her crossed lap as she quickly makes an unhindered noise of pure terror. She spins her upper half of her body around on her bed and raising her now clenched fists in a defensive manner to the space around her as she continues to assess the room. It's still night outside, only having the moonlight to read.
It still doesn't look to be nothing out of the ordinary as the seconds pass, her heart thrumming within her ears as she stares hard at the furthest wall, attempting to spot a shadow. To no answer to her rapt attention, she finds herself pursing her lips in confusion as she continues to strongly force some resemblance to a strange female voice she could've sworn she heard seconds ago.
"W-Who…" She stammers out, almost timidly, craning her face around to look silently to the left corner, then to the right again, "Who's there?"
The room continues to stay silent, still around her, and Amity sighs after her heart calms itself down gradually, almost sounding defeated as she looks back down to the well-loved installment of her favorite book series.
"Get a hold of yourself Blight, it's nothing. What are you? Going soft now?" She attempts to scold herself, selling the message to herself that she was merely hearing things.
She's back into the 79th page when she hears the voice again, popping over her left side, almost sounding right beside her left ear and potentially earning herself to shriek in shock. Amity instinctively scrambles back towards the pillows, grabbing hold of one of the smaller ones as her book stays open further down the bed.
She catches sight of this glowing spirit like figure in return of her fearful apprehension, and she puts it together that they might be behind the voice. As they float eagerly within the air. Almost like some kind of ghost, outlined in light blue light.
Like the color that illusions would have. Amity knows that color of blue more than anyone else would know she would.
"Who are you talking to?" The figure asks cheerfully, they twist themselves around, so they effortlessly hang upside down midair, their hands covering the back of their neck as they give a concerned expression.
Upon further inspection Amity notices that it appears to be a girl.
"No one," Amity said after a few minutes of being at a loss for words, staring at the figure until she gives her an amused smile, "Who are you?"
"Me?" The girl asks, she floats back a few inches and in front of Amity's bed, crossing her legs and hoovering slightly in the air, "I'm Luz."
"Well-uh," Amity swallows, "What are you- Why are you in my room?"
"Why are you in my room?" Luz questions as she narrows her eyes.
"What do you mean?" Amity tries, "This is my room, you're in my room. No one's allowed in my room."
Luz folds her arms over her light blue chest, rolling her fabricated blue eyes, "Everything surely belongs to you Amity."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Amity quips, "How do you even know my name? I've never seen you before in my life."
Luz gives a shrug, "I don't know actually. What are you doing?"
"I was reading before you interrupted me," Amity practically hisses back defensively, "What's it to you?"
Luz's frame hovers back over her comforter and she curiously reaches out to take hold of the side of Amity's left wrist, it feels almost warm-like. A certain wave of uncertainty flashes before her eyes and she's face to face with this so-called Luz who looks almost sincere in her smile. There's something she notes quickly from a glance.
"Your ears."
Luz's expression changes and she pulls away, reaching a glowing hand up to an illuminated ear, "What about—"
"You're a human," Amity interrupts, "That's weird."
"Weird?" Luz said, extending a brow upward, "How?"
"I've never met a human before," Amity clarifies, "Humans don't exist here."
"I'm not act—"
Amity narrows her eyes and opens her mouth to continue to question the girl, "Why are you here?"
"I don't know actually," Luz said quietly, looking around the room, "Why did you summon me into your dream?"
"Summon?" Amity asks, almost shocked, "I thought-" She trails off, "I casted a spell, do you mean to ask why I did that?"
Luz's face scrunches up for a second, almost like she's concentrating on something over her shoulder before she quickly breaks herself from the unexpected drift off. "I'm sorry, what?"
Amity can feel herself growing irritable by the minute, as she takes a deep breath to try and calm her imploding emotions, "I said that I casted some illusion spell. Is that why your here?"
"Oh!" Luz exclaims, almost as if she's having a miniature epiphany, her face lighting up in a cheerful expression. One that almost could make Amity throw up in her mouth within any other circumstances, "Yes! I'm sorry, I tend to do that sometimes."
"What?" Amity raises a brow, and Luz shrugs.
"Stare off into space, I tend to daydream a lot. My mom says that it annoys people."
"I can see why they could find it to be," Amity said, almost sounding sarcastic as Luz exhales sharply and glides effortlessly through the air.
"I have trouble staying focused the majority of the time, that's kind of what people think, but-uh..." Luz trails off, bringing a light blue hand behind her neck, almost as if she's scratching it as she gives a nervous smile, "I just find my imagination to be so much more entertaining."
Amity gives a soft smile, watching as Luz's face almost glows a darker shade of blue. Insinuating embarrassment, and she can't help but flash her own smile in an attempt to reconcile empathy.
Their eyes slowly come back together through the course of a few minutes and Luz exhales sharply, "So anyway... As I said before, you mentioned casting spells."
Amity gives a short nod, "I did."
"Why did you..." Luz fumbles for a proper response, "Why did you want to bring me here?"
Amity looks down at her hands, black chipping polish and blunt nails, potentially dull from her gnawing them to stubs. "I-" She looks up and is immediately caught off guard at how significantly closer Luz is then her previous position from when she glanced down, effortlessly somehow causing her cheeks to burn, "I was scared."
Luz's shoulders seem to slump, her expression changing to a pained look. It oddly felt as if Luz looked as hurt as she did internally, and it confused her for a minute until she remembers that Luz is simply a figment of her conscious.
Magic, a part of her dream.
Of course Luz would understand, she was a piece of her.
She's not sure if it should be a good thing whether or not Luz understands, but she just feels relieved that someone wants to talk to her.
"Why are you afraid?" Luz said, and immediately Amity can't help but feel the weight of her heart momentarily grow into tons before shrinking, clogging and pressing harshly against her lungs eliminating her breath.
"My parents."
"Do you want to talk about it?" She said, significantly quieter, and somehow Amity looks down to find one of Luz's cool blue hands reaching and grazing the side of her own pale one, her golden eyes quickly dart up and she shakes her head quickly. She has to fight with herself not to get choked up and to blink away the brimming tears. Luz doesn't ask anything, she gives a slow nod and forms a reassuring smile, interlacing their fingers together, "Okay."
"Why are you here Luz? I don't know you," Amity managed to let out.
"You will," Luz led on, "Did you read the last line beneath the spell?"
"Line?" Amity questions, and Luz nodded sheepishly.
"Whoever you see within these illusion formed dreams is your partner."
"Partner?" Amity asks, "What does that even mean?"
"We'll meet," Luz continues on, "Partner meaning..." She slowed, "I think as if I was to be with you like how a man is with a women."
"But you're not a man," Amity pointed out, "And you're a human."
Luz's smile merely grew, "Doesn't matter what we are or are not. Do you feel safer in my presence?"
Amity looks down and feels the twinge of a feather light touch scrape against her palm as Luz's dainty fingers overlap hers further to the point where she managed to curl her thumb around to stroke softly at the back of her own hand. The question doesn't seem at all daunting, and for some reason with the mention of feeling safe brings Amity a strange sense of familiarity upon the lackluster gesture. It bewildered her that the illusion's hand didn't sink through her own, and oddly enough she answers without thinking much of it.
"Yes."
Luz's expression slowly broke out into a smile, "Gosh you're really cool—" she started before cutting herself off by waving both of her hands with widened eyes, dropping their linked fingers to stutter out shyly. The darker shade of blue crossed over her cheeks again, "I mean— I don't know you well, but you seem from what I've experienced extremely nice."
Amity's cheeks practically beamed with the praise and her hands subconsciously come up to press flat, clammy hands against her cheeks in subtle flattery, "I-I… um…"
Silence quickly broke out between them, and Luz's hands simply tugged themselves through her hair in ample frustration, "This is so embarrassing."
Amity couldn't help but let out a laugh, earning the blue girl's eyes, "Don't worry about it."
"No, no," Luz fumbled out, "I need to be here for you. Meaning I need to make sure that your fine."
"I am."
Luz's lips curl upwards in a bashful smile and she tried to compose herself, "Can I do anything to make you feel better about your parents Amity? I know you said you didn't want to talk about it, but I want to still make sure you're okay."
"I'm fine," Amity said, waiting a minute, she pursed her lips and fold her arms over her chest, becoming too embarrassed, she looked away from Luz's glowing eyes and uttered something barely recognizable as, "Can you give me a hug actually?" Luz oddly perked up at the question, and Amity's eyes lock onto hers before she felt her own cheeks burn brighter through the darkened bedroom, "I kind of think I might need one."
It's a flash of smiling blue lips and Amity soon found the weighted sensation cover her shoulders and torso. It felt significantly heavier than their hands, but still warm and tingly as she enveloped her into a strong embrace. Amity could feel the subtle weight of arms wrapping around her shoulders and a warm face pressing leisurely against her neck. There isn't the subtle feeling of breath being expelled against skin, and the contact almost seems both lifeless and alive based on what Amity felt.
"I don't even know you, but I know I love you already," Luz whispered out, pulling away after Amity's arms fall back against the pink comforter, "What are you reading?" She changed the subject, Amity watched as Luz's glowing face looks down at the open book lying limply against the duvet.
"Oh!" Amity smiled sheepishly, "it's my favorite series, The Good Witch Azura."
"No way!" The blue illusion called back astonishingly, "Mine too!"
