Hi guys! I am back with another story and I think this one is going to last for a while, I can see it continuing for a few chapters. Hope you enjoy. :)
The team was all set in their respective positions. Voight and Atwater were in a side alley waiting if the offender decided to escape from there. Ruzek and Burgess were behind the building where the deal was to go down. Halstead and Upton where diagonally opposite the building keeping a solid eye.
"I am exhausted. Could this day just end," said Hailey in a low tone, clearly tired.
"We're almost there, just hold on for a little more while," Jay replied with a brief smile. If he was tired he didn't show it.
Suddenly a car was approaching and Jay spoke in his phone to let everyone know the dealer was arriving. They let it play out and just when Voight was about to ask them to engage and arrest the offenders, there was gunfire. The first bullets hit Jay's truck and both Jay and Hailey dove out of the truck on instinct, still not realising what had happened. The second round was fired at Burgess and Ruzek, who in their turn didn't know what was transpiring either. They quickly got out of their vehicle as well and looked around to find out where the shooter was. Meanwhile, everybody could hear Voight's voice on the phone, yelling and enquiring whether everyone was alright.
Suddenly Ruzek spotted two men running out of the building from the back and from his position he and Kim raced after the offenders. Those two realising they were spotted decided to enter a narrow alleyway on the side and Adam got out from the car and started following them, at the same time letting Atwater and Voight know they were headed in their direction. Hearing all this Jay pulled his truck out of his spot and moved towards this direction hoping to stop these pricks before they got away.
Jay went to the other end of the road and told Hailey he was going to run after them while she could cover the only remaining exit. Hailey complied and Jay was gone. The offenders were now trapped and it was only a matter of time before they were caught. Then, once again shots were fired and Hailey had only one thing in her mind: Jay. She sped up and reached the corner where she heard the shots. She saw two men sprawled on the ground and she leapt out of the truck and headed towards them. As she approached she could see there was more blood than she would have imagined and she reached the men on the floor and spotted Adam bleeding slowly but profusely, apparently the bullet had pierced through the vest. She glanced at the other person sprawled on the ground, who was certainly dead considering a bullet hole was present right on top of his forehead. Thank God, it was one of the offenders. She pushed Jay, whom she didn't seem to recognise as she tried to stop the bleeding from Adam's chest.
"Adam! Adam!" she was screaming to keep him awake and in focus.
Only a moment later she realised what she had done as Jay got up with a groan and a sound that clearly indicated he was in pain, and more so after the push Hailey gave him. Meanwhile the other offender was caught and was shot by Voight when he pulled out a gun towards Kim, who had just arrived, ready to take him down. As that gunshot was heard Hailey didn't know what to do or how to react, it appeared that she heard only gunshots today. Then when Atwater announced on the phone that the other guy was down as well, Hailey sighed heavily. This day had to end otherwise she would either go mad or do something crazy.
The ambulance had arrived and Adam was escorted followed by a very worried Kim who was now unable to control her tears. The rest of the team followed the ambulance to Med. Hailey drove since Jay was in no shape to manage that at the moment.
"You should have hopped on the ambo as well Jay, you are hurt as well," said Hailey looking at him and his bruises.
"I'm fine, don't worry," replied Jay tonelessly.
Hailey tried to strike up a conversation but Jay was no game, he replied meekly where he had to ad for the rest of the time didn't speak. Hailey sensed something was wrong but she didn't have the energy nor the emotional strength to talk to Jay about his problems. This day had given her enough trauma and she just wanted to sleep.
Two hours later Adam was out of surgery and fine to everyone's relief. On the other hand, Jay didn't want to get himself checked out but Voight forced him to since he wasn't even listening to Upton. Finally everyone started dispersing, Adam had to stay the night and Kim said she would hang around until Atwater came early in the morning. Hailey gave Halstead a ride home, which was as awkward as the one to the hospital. She dropped him off and was glad and relived that this day was coming to an end finally, she would go home and attack her bed.
It was past ten when she heard knock on her door. Hailey got up and wondered who it would be at this late hour. She peeped through the hole and saw Jay standing outside. She held her breath for a long moment and opened the door exhaling a little too loudly.
"Jay, what are you doing here?" she asked really wondering what he was doing here.
"We need to talk. I thought I could let it go, but I can't and now I need to know," said Jay looking at the ground.
"What's wrong Jay?" Hailey asked actually worried now. What was Jay trying to say?
"Oh, come on don't act as though you don't know!" said Jay a little louder than normal.
"What?" Hailey asked trying to remain calm and not get riled up.
"You know exactly what I am talking about Hailey," persisted Jay.
"What's the matter with you Jay? You really are not making any sense," said Hailey hoping to conclude this conversation.
Jay smirked and blurted out, "You really don't see it do you?"
"See what?" Hailey asked loudly, a sign that her composure too was ruffled.
Jay looked at her for a moment and decided to move towards the interior of the house. Hailey turned simultaneously as he entered. What was going on and why was Jay behaving like this?
Do you still have feelings for Adam?" Jay asked blankly and braced himself for whatever was to happen next.
"Excuse me?" Hailey started sensing where this conversation would lead them.
"You didn't answer my question Hailey," Jay said flatly, frustrated and angry that he wasn't getting to hear what he wanted to.
Hailey decided to take the high road and not lose it at this moment, "Jay, you're clearly tired and hurt. You should get some sleep, we'll talk tomorrow. Go home."
"So my suspicions were right, you still have feelings for Adam."
This was it, Hailey couldn't take it anymore. It had been a long day, Adam was shot, she had seen more blood than she would have liked to and Jay had been an ass since the shooting. She couldn't take it anymore and she burst out, "Your suspicions? It's not a crime to date someone! And I don't have to give you any explanations about my personal life Jay! What I do concerns me and it has got nothing to do with you!"
Jay looked at her intently for a moment and decided that since he had already put his feet in the mud he'd rather go all the way now, "You're wrong! You're wrong!"
"No Jay, I am absolutely right! And why the hell do you even care about who I date or don't?" Hailey yelled frustrated.
The moment the words left her mouth she understood the implications and suddenly realised she wasn't ready to hear the answer.
"Because"— Jay had to stop, because he himself wasn't sure what was going to come out of his mouth.
Hailey continued in a soft voice now, finally understanding what this was about, "Are you jealous of Adam Jay?"
"What! No! Why the hell would I be jealou"—
Hailey's look stopped Jay from continuing and in that moment he knew he had lost, there was nothing more to say. She knew and he didn't know what to do about it.
"Hailey…" he started but trailed off looking at the floor now, not being able to look her in the eye.
Hailey approached him and placed her hands on his shoulder and made him look up. God, how blue were her eyes, thought Jay. Hailey began, hoping she would say the words she had formulated in her mind, "We broke up it's been more than two months, and you know that."
Jay nodded slightly still not sure what to say or how to react. Then he did something that he himself was not aware of. He leaned down and kissed Hailey lightly. Hailey didn't respond and just stood there trying to understand what was happening. Jay didn't let go, he wanted an entry but she didn't give him one still. He persisted still, hoping she would budge and give him what she wanted, and deep down he knew what she wanted as well. For a moment it felt as though this was going to be the worst kiss on the face of this planet, until Hailey let herself go. As Jay sensed and felt that he entered her with a significant amount of force and Hailey had to move back a few steps. She realised this was it, there was no going back, and she wouldn't be able to stop this anymore. Jay devoured her as though trying to show the world she was his and only his. Hailey couldn't help but respond on similar lines, she wanted him, she wanted him as much as he wanted her. But she couldn't let this happen, no, she just couldn't. As these thoughts were racing across her mind, she realised that Jay had pushed her onto the couch and was on top of her now. Man, was he fast and desperate! He reached for the hem of her shirt and that's when Hailey came back to her full senses. She gripped Jay's hands tightly and stopped him from doing any more damage to their partnership than was already done. No, there was no going back from this and Hailey wasn't ready to face the outcome of this course of action that Halstead had intently taken them upon. Jay, sensing something was wrong, looked up from her and Hailey took the opportunity and pushed him away and got up from the couch. She crossed her arms around her chest and looked into blank space. Jay too was up by now and stared at her as though she was pointing a gun at him.
"Hailey, what's"—
Before he could finish his sentence she interrupted him and said so softly that she could barely hear herself, "I think you should go Jay."
Even though the words were hardly a whisper Jay heard them loud and clear in his mind. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. He stood still for a moment hoping to see some expression on Hailey's face, but in vain. She herself was standing like a statue of stone and showed no signs of emotions. Jay looked away and understood nothing more was going to happen. He walked to the chair where he had put his coat, grabbed it and headed for the door. As he opened the door he spat out the final words, "I just wasn't good enough for you, right? I guess Adam can take care of that department, since he's such a pro."
And the door slammed shut and the reverberations lasted long enough to give Hailey chills. The tears that had gathered in her eyes from the past few minutes betrayed her and reached their destination now. All Hailey could think about was whether she would have a partner to work with tomorrow or not.
Well, here is the first chapter of this story. Looking forward to feedback and ideas. Thank you!
