"Remember to see without looking." Jin's words flowed into her ears as they walked down the bustling city street. Despite the winter chill in the air, people still filled the sidewalks as they went on their way, the cars locked in the typical pattern of afternoon traffic. Alexis shoved her hands into her hoodie pockets further in hopes of warmth.
"I know. I have to observe without anyone knowing they're being watched." She saw Jin nod out of the side of her eye as she scanned the view in front of her. Everything seemed ordinary, nothing she saw looked out of the ordinary for the moment, but she knew just how quickly that could change. As they approached the crosswalk, the smell of coffee and fresh baked goods caught her attention, making her head turn to see a small café just to their right.
"Let's go in there" she said with a smile forming on her face "We can warm up for a bit before heading back."
Before he could protest, she grabbed him by the hand and drug him into the cozy little shop picking out a table along the wall, not exactly secluded but far enough away from the other patrons in case Jin decided to quiz her on what she had noticed. As they sat down, Jin's look of surprise settled into one of unease and slight annoyance.
"We did not come out for coffee Alexis. We came out to test your skills and right now I would say you are giving into a distraction." Alexis rolled her eyes a bit playfully.
"This isn't exactly a distraction. If we headed back now there would be too much information to properly assess when we returned to the bureau. This is simply a break to warm up talk about what I saw on the first half of the walk." Before Jin could reply, a woman that Alexis would place in her mid-forties walked up.
"What a cute couple you two are! What can I get for you today sweetie?" Alexis stifled a laugh as Jin turned red. Before he could open his mouth to protest she spoke up.
"I'll have a chai latte and my boyfriend here will take a regular coffee with two creams and a sugar." As the waitress walked off with their order Jin finally managed to speak, his shock having resided.
"Why did you say that?" he hissed " We are not a couple!" His face which was still red now held a glare that was directed at her. She sighed before responding,
"I'm sorry I should have corrected her, but it was just really funny to me that people could confuse us for being a couple, and besides no one is hurt." Jin shook his head, but didn't talk back. If Alexis didn't know any better she would think that the lingering redness in his face was a blush instead of frustration. After a few moments of silence the waitress sat down their drinks, leaving them alone with their thoughts and the warm mugs.
"So what did you see out there?" His question caught her off guard. She half expected him to give her the silent treatment for the rest of the day.
"Not much out of the ordinary" she said "Looked like there were a few tourists trying to get around, but it's more likely that they would have been new to the city since it isn't the season that most tourists come around." He nodded as he listened to her.
"Good observation. Except you missed one thing." Alexis frowned in confusion,
"What did I miss?"
"That I love you." Alexis reeled back in shock before snapping in her ear brought her back to reality, where Jin sat rolling his eyes.
"Honestly Alexis, you need to stop spacing out while taking a rest. You missed the fact that there is an increased police presence in the city today." Feeling her cheeks get hot she nodded and took a drink of her latter, praying that he would figure the flush is from embarrassment at missing something during the practice. She spent the next few minutes of awkward silence taking in the café. The wall across from them was painted a warm cream color while the remaining three were red brick. The light toned hardwood floor carried the scruff marks of hundreds of customers sliding the chairs in and out. Throughout the room there were hanging plants, they looked fake, however someone had clearly cleaned them recently since there was no trace of dust on the leaves. Only when she realized that her mug was empty did she look back at Jin who had finished his coffee as well.
"Ready to go?" he asked. She nodded and pulled out her wallet to cover her half of the tab when shook his head.
"I took care of it while you were absorbed in your drink. Let's go." With that he stood up and waited for her to follow. The walk back to the bureau seemed to last seconds as she was lost in thought once more, wondering why she had seen that daydream. 'Do I like him? Is that even allowed?'
