Summary: Blaine has the best little nephew ever. That's why he's agreed to babysit him once every other week while his brother and sister-in-law are working. And hey, maybe he will finally work up the courage to speak to that gorgeous barista from the coffee shop around the corner.
Important: I don't own Glee and their characters! I also apologize for any mistakes. English is not my mother tongue. This story is Blaine P.O.V. fully.
I may be in love with the OC's I created. Runa, Linnea, Leah, Sammy, Lars (although Lars is based on my nephew, so he's technically not made up)… So if you want to know more about them (info the story doesn't provide), lemme know and I'll gladly provide you with knowledge!
As you might notice, this is a super fluffy fic. I like it just the way it is. I'm not sure if the future will bring angst/drama/hurt/comfort, but I'll make sure to warn you in the author's note above the chapter if there is any!
Without further ado... Enjoy chapter 5!
Chapter 5
Weekends were always over in a flash for Blaine. It made him anxious for the week to come. He had spend the rest of Sunday, after Kurt had left, doing homework and reading for uni and before he knew it, it was time to whip up some dinner.
Leah had gone out with Sammy, so it was just him alone. He didn't like eating alone, so he called up Cooper.
"Hey little brother!" Cooper answered the phone rather happily, a squealing Lars and a talking Runa in the background.
"Hey, Coop!" Blaine immediately smiled bright hearing the buzzing sounds of his family at the other side of the line. He sincerely hoped he could come and visit them. "I was wondering if you guys had any plans for dinner? I'm done with the homework I wanted to do today and I'm bored in my empty apartment. Leah's gone, so…"
"Oh, you should come here! Take some take out with you on the way here, though, since we were planning on grabbing some easy food anyway," Cooper exclaimed, even more happily than the way he answered the phone. Blaine heard a particular loud shriek in the background and soon he heard Lars and Runa laugh.
"I think Lars agrees to seeing his uncle, although you have to make haste, it'll be his bed time soon."
"Thanks, Coop. I'll be there in an hour," and Blaine hung up the phone, looking for his stuff while walking to the hallway, where he slipped into his jacket. Soon enough, he was on his way to the subway, not trying to think too much about Kurt.
Lovely Kurt, who had surpised him that morning by kissing him like that. He surely knew how to sweep his new crush off his feet. Kurt, who Blaine knew would play an important role in his life for a very long time.
The subway ride to Brooklyn went without a hitch and within 20 minutes, he was moving through Coop and Runa's street, looking for some good food. When he walked right by Kurt's work, the coffee shop, he couldn't help but to stare in, even though he knew Kurt wouldn't be there.
He found a cute little chicken restaurant, where he ordered some lemon chicken with veggies and French fries for the three of them.
Armed with three plastic bags, he crossed the road over to his brother's apartment and rang the bell. He could hear his nephew shrieking all the way down on the street and soon he saw the balcony door open. Runa, with Lars in her arms, appeared and Lars started waving frantically, his tiny arms moving uncontrollably, while his sister-in-law held onto him tightly.
"I'm coming up!" Blaine yelled and pushed the door, just as Cooper opened the door for him, surprising Blaine.
"Sorry, the button to open the door from upstairs doesn't work. We have to call our landlord tomorrow." Cooper greeted Blaine with a tight hug and moved back upstairs, taking the bags from Blaine and placing them on the table which was already set with plates and cutlery.
Blaine shrugged off his jacket and put it on the coat rack in the hallway. He nuzzled his nephew's tiny nose, who was lounging in his mom's arms. He was put in his baby chair and he made grabby hands at the bowl with yogurt and smashed fruit.
Soon enough, the whole family was enjoying their dinner (and Lars his dessert, since he had already eaten earlier that evening). Blaine knew the question would come, but it took only two minutes and Blaine was laughing behind his napkin, because he knew his brother, so he really shouldn't be surprised.
"How's Kurt?" Cooper did a weird thing wiggling his eyebrows and both Runa and Blaine had to make sure they wouldn't choke on their chicken. It looked absolutely ridiculous. Lars was just watching the grown ups with big eyes and when they were laughing, he laughed with them, even though he had no clue what they were laughing about.
"He's fine, Cooper, he's helping his roommate with a project," Blaine answered, after calming down from laughing. Runa rubbed her chest as a piece of chicken got stuck inside, but also she was calm again.
"Oh, so you talk regularly?" Cooper exclaimed excitedly as he brought another spoonful of yogurt to his son's mouth.
"Yes, through text and he even came over this morning."Blaine really wanted to hide the fact they had kissed rather steamingly, but a blush crept over his cheeks faster than he could hide them behind his hands.
"Oh! You're blushing, squirt!" Cooper was applauding and his son joined in, laughing in the process. "So he either sucked you off or he did something wickedly romantic, or you wouldn't have those red cheeks!"
"Stop teasing him, Cooper Anderson!" Runa said rather strictly, but also she was smiling smugly at Blaine's blushing.
"I can tease my brother however I please."
"If you want him to finish his story about Kurt, then you should maybe shut the fuck up," Runa exclaimed as she covered her son's ears as she said 'fuck'.
Cooper shut his mouth, closed it with an imaginary key and threw it over his shoulder.
"Thank you, Cooper," Blaine said sarcastically. "As I was trying to say… He came over this morning. We had lunch, but he had to leave sooner than I would have liked to help his roommate with a project."
"You're in love!" Cooper proceeded teasingly.
"I…" Blaine stammered. "I think it's too early to be calling it love, Coop. But I really, really like him. I haven't liked someone that much since… ever. Kurt is the first guy I've had a crush on like this. Hammond was different. He'd been the first boy who liked me ever since I came to New York. We didn't have a real connection. He gave me attention, to a certain point, and I thought it meant I liked him."
"You deserve it, Blainey," Runa said kindly, placing her hand over her brother-in-law's. "You really do. You're an amazing person. You are kind, patient, decent and not to mention good-looking."
"Hey, you're my wife!" Cooper pouted and took Lars from his chair, who was done with his dessert. "Your mother's mocking me, little monkey."
Runa rolled his eyes at her dramatic husband. "Oh shush, your brother's gay, so it's not like I can act on my feelings for him," she said teasingly and Cooper pouted even more, hugging Lars closer to his chest, who didn't mind the attention and cuddled back.
Blaine laughed and watched the whole conversation take place. He really loved his family. Cooper had been extremely amazing ever since an argument they had when Blaine was still in high school. It was at the time Cooper was still trying to make it in Hollywood and his ego was bigger than it should have been. Blaine felt neglected, also because of things that had happened between them during their childhood years.
After a long and mature talk, Cooper had made a complete, 360-degree turn and while he still hadn't lost his ego completely, he was now the best big brother Blaine could've ever wished for. Not long after that moment Cooper had met Runa and he became even more bearable.
It didn't take long for Runa and Blaine to become close aswell. They bonded over one thing they both really liked: Cooper Anderson. Blaine could also talk really well with Runa about his struggles of being a gay man in Ohio. While Runa hadn't experienced anything like that, because 1: she was a girl and 2: she wasn't gay in the slightest, Blaine found her way of listening and giving advice really helpful.
Linnea had come into the picture when she had moved to New York the same week as Blaine did. Runa had shared that bit of information with Linnea and because of that they had shared coffee in their first week in New York. They had an immediate bond aswell. Soon after that, they were best friends and Runa had loved that development.
The family became even closer when they all came to New York. It had been a recent development, but Blaine was so happy it had happened. And now with Kurt in the picture and Lars being the best nephew ever, his life was close to perfect.
Cooper and Blaine cleaned up the table, while Runa had the task of bringing Lars to bed. It was a whole routine, complete with squealing coming from the bedroom and after half an hour, Runa entered the living room, closing the door behind her and wiping her eyes.
"He's asleep," she sighed contentedly and sat down on the couch, where Blaine handed her a cup of steaming hot tea. She thanked him quietly and for the next few minutes, all three Andersons were silent, all thinking over their day, Blaine's a little more eventful than Cooper and Runa's day.
They put on the television to have some background noise, but soon they were quietly talking over it, not paying any attention to the program shown.
"So what will be your next step with Kurt?" Runa wondered out loud, while holding the cup of tea close to her face to let the steam warm up her face. It was November and it had been rather cold for a while, so every bit of warmth was much welcomed.
"We're going on a date on Wednesday," Blaine answered excitedly. "And I'm bringing him to the Central Park Zoo. I haven't been there in a long time and I think it's the perfect place for a date."
"That's an amazing idea, squirt!" Cooper exclaimed and watched Runa with sparkles in his eyes. "We should go there soon with Lars. I think he would like all the animals."
"I think so too," and Runa's eyes were sparkling aswell, thinking about their little family and they had it pretty damn good right now.
Soon it was time for Blaine to leave if he wanted to be back in his apartment at a reasonable time. Tomorrow was a uni day after all and the start of a new week. Blaine wanted to get some most deserved sleep to have enough energy for the week to come.
Another hour later, Blaine stepped through the door of his apartment. He heard sounds coming from the living room and he was greeted by the sight of Leah and Sammy snuggling on the couch. Blaine greeted them both and moved to his bedroom for some much needed sleep.
The next day his alarm woke him up abruptly. He couldn't hear any noises in the rest of the apartment, which meant Leah was either still asleep or already gone for practice. Blaine forced himself out of his warm bed and moved to the bathroom on auto pilot. His morning routine was pretty sufficient and he was freshened up and ready for the day in 15 minutes. A sandwich on a plate, wrapped in plastic, was on the kitchen table with a little note next to it.
Dearest roommate (the best one in the world!),
Enjoy your breakfast. Let's cook dinner together tonight. I feel like I haven't spoken to you properly in a while!
See you tonight & have a good day!
X Leah.
He really had the best roommate in the world, even though Leah called him the best one. He couldn't agree with that statement though.
The sandwich was gone within a minute or two and he made some coffee, since he had a class at 8am, so there was no time to stop by a coffee shop.
Checking his phone, his heart made a jump inside his chest when Kurt had apparently send him a text in the last few minutes. With a still fast beating heart, Blaine opened said text.
Goodmorning Blaine, I'm on my way to Vogue for a day as an intern. I could write a book about it. Yes, after three years I'm still only an intern, but I actually really like it here. My boss, Isabelle, is amazing. I'm thinking about you constantly. Have a great day. X Kurt.
Blaine closed his eyes as he felt a rush of happiness run through his body. Kurt made him so happy and he couldn't wait for more adventures together.
Good morning Kurt. Have a wonderful day at Vogue. You're the best intern Vogue's ever had, I'm sure of it. I'm almost ready to go to uni and have a day full of classes. Yay! I can't wait to see you or speak to you again soon. X Blaine.
With new energy, provided by one simple text from Kurt Hummel, Blaine wandered outside to the subway station, noticing he had a slight skip in his step from being happy.
The day proceeded without any real incidents and Blaine found himself skipping back to the subway station, after a conversation via text with Leah, discussing who would go grocery shopping for dinner. In the end, Blaine was the lucky one who had to stop by the supermarket. Not that he minded. Shopping always calmed him down in a weird way. The day had been full with information and he needed to wind down.
After moving quickly and efficiently through the supermarket, he had his backpack and another plastic bag in his hands full with ingredients for lasagna. Leah loved his recipe for this particular lasagna and he didn't make it enough, often relying on take out or simple pre-packed salads.
Home, he heard Leah in the bathroom taking a shower. She showered multiple times a day, since she had a lot of practises throughout the day. Not that her skin was anything less than perfect, so Blaine predicted that she must have a pretty good skin care routine.
Kurt also had gorgeous skin. Blaine couldn't stop thinking about Kurt. Always when he was thinking about one thing, he would find something relevant to think about Kurt in that situation aswell. It made his stomach tighten and tickle and he liked that feeling, so it was not that he would try and stop doing that.
He busied himself making the lasagna, slicing up the veggies and making the tomato sauce, before building the lasagna in a big oven dish belonging to Leah. Within half an hour, he shoved the lasagna in the oven, setting the timer on 30 minutes.
In that moment Leah appeared in the kitchen, her hair wrapped in a cute pink towel and her face in a green beauty face mask, which would have looked kind of ridiculous, if Blaine wasn't already used to his roommate's self-care routines.
"Something smells amazing!" Leah exclaimed and started doing some dishes already, the things they wouldn't need for dinner, like the cutting board and knives and the pan which had held the sauce.
Blaine grabbed some plates from the cabinet and placed them on the table, together with some cutlery and the pepper mill. "Thanks! How was your day?"
"It was fine. One of the girls fell down during practise and injured herself pretty badly, though. We have a game to cheer the day after tomorrow, so it's not that convenient, but it's not like she could help it. Now we have a stand-in from another uni, but luckily she's amazing and pretty quick with learning the routine. How was yours?"
"It was fine. Classes were a bit boring though, I'm kind of done with all the theory lessons. Let me just do essays and research, I like that so much more. But it's mandatory, so there's nothing to be done about it," Blaine answered, as he took two glasses, filled them with water and put them next to the plates. "Should I dry?"
"Please!" Leah answered thankfully, drying her hands and leaving the clean, but still wet dishes for Blaine next of the sink. She leaned against the oven, her butt almost touching the see-through, hot glass.
"When will you see Kurt again?" Leah asked with sparkly eyes, which made Blaine snicker. He was sure she could melt a lot of people with those eyes, but he remained unaffected, pushing her shoulder in a teasing manner.
"The day after tomorrow. I can't wait already. It's an afternoon date, so I was thinking of taking him to the Central Park Zoo. I'm picking him up at Vogue head quarters, he's an intern there." Blaine's eyes started sparkling aswell, just because he was talking about Kurt. That was how much effect that chestnut-haired, fashion-loving, quirky guy had on Blaine.
"That sounds amazing. Sammy and I had a date there once, too. But not until much later in our relationship. I'm sure Kurt will love it," Leah answered brightly and she took a sip of water, as she waited for Blaine to answer.
"Yeah, I hope so. I'm not sure if he even likes animals, but there's only one way to find out!"
They talked some more and Leah also took off her mask before coming back just in time for the oven timer to beep, signalling that the lasagna was ready. Leah clapped her hands in excitement as Blaine took it out. It was bubbling on the surface and the cheese looked golden and delicious and had melted just right.
Blaine placed the oven dish on the table in between the plates and with a sharp knife, he cut two decent-sized pieces and placed them on their plates.
"It looks amazing, is this the one I love so much?" Leah asked, with that same sparkle in her eyes as before.
"Yep, it sure is!" Blaine answered brightly, cutting it in smaller pieces so it could cool off faster. He took a sip of his water and the next 15 minutes contained of them talking, eating. They finished the dish with the two of them in a record timing, but only because Leah had had some pretty tiring practises, which made her hungry as hell, so she had the majority of the dish.
"That was delicious, Blaine, thank you so much for cooking! You're an angel." And with a kiss on her roommate's cheek, she put the remaining dishes on the counter and did them with lots of dedication, making sure the oven dish was thoroughly clean.
They moved to the living room with dessert just a while later, both holding a bowl with lemon sorbet ice cream with fresh strawberries. They turned on their TV and aimlessly started zapping through diffent channels when they found re-runs of Friends. They decided to watch those and munched on their bowl of ice cream, both resting their legs on the coffee table.
At one point Leah stood up, brought her and Blaine's bowl back to the kitchen en placed them in the sink, washing those up aswell. She came back to the living room, where Blaine sat with his eyes closed, a cozy blanket resting over his legs.
"I'm gonna go ahead and make some homework. While I might not be as academically challenged by my studies as you, I still need to do it."
Leah disappeared through the door of her bedroom, leaving Blaine alone with his thoughts, which was very dangerous these days. Because every time it brought him to Kurt.
Wonderful, amazing, sweet, funny, beautiful Kurt. Before Blaine could reconsider, he had his phone in his hand and he dialed Kurt's number, brining his phone to his ear carefully.
"Hey, Blaine! I'm so glad you called." Kurt answered the phone, sounding tired, but happy that he could talk to Blaine.
"Hey Kurt. I miss you." A tight feeling appeared in Blaine's throat and he tried swallowing it off. He didn't know why he turned emotional now, maybe it was because Kurt was on his mind constantly and he just really missed his crush, okay?
"I miss you aswell, Blaine… You sound off, are you okay?"
Blaine closed his eyes and groaned. Ofcourse Kurt saw, or rather heard, right through it. It was a curse and a wonderful gift at the same time that Kurt worried about him.
"I'm fine, I'm a bit emotional, don't ask me why. I don't even know myself. It was a long day."
"Okay, that actually makes me a bit relieved, because when I was in the shower half an hour ago, Rachel had to come and save me, because I was crying in the shower." Kurt sounded kind and spoke with a quiet voice, which instantly calmed down Blaine.
"Why?" Blaine asked back quietly.
"Because I really want to see you? I've had a hectic day at Vogue and all I could think about was being wrapped in your arms. I don't even know you that long and you're already dancing around in my mind constantly, Blaine Anderson."
"I'm glad to hear that, because you're in mine too." Blaine pressed the phone even closer to his ear, as if he could bring Kurt to him in that way.
"I can't wait until Wednesday. I'm off at 12:30pm. Will I see you at the fountains in front of Vogue head quarters?"
"Sure thing, Kurt. It's amazing to hear your voice. Am I allowed to say that?"
"Ofcourse, Blaine. You flatter me." And Blaine heard a yawn at the other end of the line.
"I'm so sorry I've called you while you were probably relaxing, I will let you go now, speak to you-", but before Blaine could finish his sentence, Kurt interrupted him.
"Don't you dare hang up on me, Blaine Anderson. If I didn't want to speak to you, I wouldn't have picked up, right? So stop being insecure. I really, really like you and I'm really glad I'm talking to you."
Blaine laughed sheepishly, so glad Kurt couldn't see his dark red cheeks now. He was slightly embarrassed, hating the fact he couldn't show his emotions that well over the phone.
"Thank you for that, Kurt. You're too kind." Blaine settled back against the couch, completely relaxing this time. He felt his shoulders sinking into the comfortable couch and his eyes fluttered close.
"So, how was your long day?" Kurt asked curiously.
"It was okay enough. I'm just done with all the classes at uni. I just really want to do my third year research. I'm not made to be sitting in a chair for a long period of time, unless it's for writing my book or seeing a movie or play I really like."
"I get that," Kurt answered kindly. "There are only a few things I can really commit my full attention to."
Blaine's heart leaped in his throat and he had no clue why. Maybe it was the fact Kurt had committed his entire attention to him now. It made him feel wanted, it made him feel special. And he hadn't felt wanted like that in a very long time.
"How was your hectic day as an intern at Vogue? Tell me all the juicy fashion gossip."
He heard Kurt chuckle softly in his ears. It was a pleasant sound. He wanted to hear it many times more. He would make sure to keep up with things to say to Kurt that would make him chuckle.
"It was interesting. There's one other intern on the same floor as I am. She has a different boss than I have, but she was absent today, which meant the other intern was constantly around my desk, trying to steal work from me. I really had to make sure not to call her something… not so nice."
"God, Kurt, that must have been so… annoying. Does her boss not know about checklists?"
"No, that's not it. Her boss is amazing. It's just that she's so chaotic that she doesn't know what to do if she can't ask someone. Everything has to be spelled out for her. I don't think her contract will be extended at the end of the year. Atleast I hope not."
"She doesn't deserve it, surely."
"Thanks, Blaine. It's good to reflect on the day with anyone else than Rachel Berry."
Blaine chuckled out loud when he heard an outraged "hey!" in the background and he heard something hitting something else.
"I've just been hit with a stuffed animal. I feel attacked," Kurt managed to get out in between laughs.
Blaine couldn't help but to laugh out loud too. It felt so wonderful to be able to laugh with Kurt.
"It feels so good to talk to you," Kurt said after he took a deep breath and calmed down a bit.
"God, Kurt, you have no idea how much I like talking to you too. That is immensely promising for the future."
"I couldn't agree more," Kurt breathed out, sounding really happy.
"See you on Wednesday?" Blaine asked with a lazy, content smile around his lips. Too bad Kurt wasn't there to see it and to kiss him goodbye…
"See you on Wednesday, Blaine. Good night and sleep tight."
"Don't let the bed bugs bite."
And with a heavy feeling in his stomach, Blaine hung up the phone. It had been so extremely amazing to be talking to Kurt. He could feel this becoming a thing in the near future. It didn't matter how busy they both were, they would always squeeze in a few minutes to talk about their days.
Blaine couldn't wait for that to be a thing between just the two of them.
