Keep in mind this is the first fanfic I have ever written. Enjoy!

"PLEASE JUST GET UP OUT OF BED!" Tessa heard a slightly hoarse voice shout, shaking her shoulders.

"Alright, alright. You don't have to be so loud, or shake me, for that matter. You could have just talked." Tessa said to her brother, who was standing by her bed, looking rumpled.

This comment caused another outburst. "I could have just TALKED?! I was shaking you for half an hour, we're late for school now, and yes. I started OUT just talking, but YOU JUST WOULDN'T GET UP!" Nate sounded quite hysterical now, and Tessa couldn't help but giggle.

"Okay, okay. Just chill, bro." Tessa said, enjoying his harassed expression immensely.

"Hmph, well, you'd better get to school, wouldn't want to be late for your first day, right Tessie?" She smiled, Nate had always called her Tessie. It wasn't Nate's first day at school, of course. He had been in London for quite some time, Tessa had only come after her Aunt Harriet had died.

"Yeah…" It wasn't that she wasn't excited, or course she was. It was just that she had left everything she knew in New York, and now she had to adapt to a whole new place, all the way across the ocean. It was a bit overwhelming. Nate, however, seemed not to notice her troubled demeanor.

"...Tessie?" Nate's voice broke through her train of thought.

Tessa blinked. "Yes? Sorry, I wasn't paying attention."

"Can I borrow some money for tonight? I'm planning on going someplace with my friends tonight, and I promised I'd pay for drinks, but I don't have the money."

Tessa sighed. Nate was normally so sweet, but once he got into gambling, he started to become more demanding, it was like his once innocent temperament was just a facade. However, Tessa never could say no. "Fine, but you have to pay me back," she said, knowing he wouldn't, because he just got fired from his job, and had yet to apply for a new one.

Nate smiled, and his sweet disposition was back. "Thanks Tessie, you're the best. I promise I'll pay you back."

Tessa nodded absently as Nate ran down the stairs, "I'll wait for you in the kitchen!" he called back, leaving Tessa to her thoughts.

"Will, wake up!" Jem said loudly into Will's ear. They were roommates, and went to the same school, so they were practically brothers.

Evidently, this isn't working. Jem thought. "WILL! THERE'S A DUCK SITTING ON YOUR HEAD!" He yelled.

Will sat bolt upright. "Where?" He said wildly. "Where are those devilish little creatures?!" Jem laughed at his feightened expression. Will glared back.

"Why wake me when there's no worthwhile reason to get up?" He asked grumpily.

Jem smiled. "Well, today is the first day of school."

"Exactly, so there's no good reason to get up," Will argued.

Jem dragged a still-struggling Will out of bed. "Get up or we'll both be late." he persisted.

Will looked puzzled. "Why would we both be late? You could go ahead of me, you know."

"No, I won't go ahead of you. If you won't get out of bed for you, do it to preserve my perfect track record," Jem replied. "besides, there's a new girl from the States coming, and Mrs. Branwell chose the both of us to show her around the school. We want to make a good impression, don't we?" She's Nate's brother, right? I hope she'll be better than he was. Thank goodness that idiot graduated. Jem wondered.

Will rolled his eyes. "Alright, alright, I'm coming. Now leave before I change my mind and ruin your 'perfect track record.'" he said sarcastically.

Jem smiled and walked into the kitchen, where he sat at the table, wondering what the new girl was going to be like.
