Rory was pregnant. But the craziest thing was that Lorelei was pregnant too. The time since had been no less crazy. Lorelei and Rory were inseparable again. Rory moved back into her room. Logan hadn't wanted to be apart of the baby's life, and Rory and Jess had since taken back up and had gotten very close very quickly. Rory and Lorelai were only 2 weeks apart in their pregnancies but Lorelai hadn't found out until a month later when the smell of Luke's coffee-her favorite coffee- had sent her sprinting to the bathroom to be sick. And now- well forget crazy- all hell had broken loose. There was nothing but snow outside. Not a single thing was visible other than snow. Inside is where the hell had broken loose. Luke was sitting on the floor in front of the fire place with Rory held between his legs, her back resting against his chest, her head on his shoulder, her legs being held wide apart in his hands while she held his wrists for dear life. Jess was kneeling in front of her legs and knees as he encouraged her to push. Lorelai sat next to Rory, one hand squeezing Luke's bicep, the other rubbing her own contracting belly. "Push, Rory, push! You're doing so good," Jess was saying. Rory gripped Luke's wrists tighter and looked at her mother with a pleading expression. "He's right, baby, you're doing great, you're almost done," Lorelai said with a tense voice. Luke was watching Lorelei. He felt completely overwhelmed. His daughter was giving birth in his arms while his wife labored next to him, doing her best to focus on her daughter while pain tore through her own body. He could tell the pain had peaked when his wife blanched and leaned over to put her head on his shoulder, tightening her grip on his arm. He leaned his face down against hers and whispered to her "breathe, sweetheart, breathe, I love you." He felt her struggling to breathe against his neck and he nuzzled his face against hers more. He felt Rory tighten up in his arms and he looked down at her. She was pushing hard, and they were right, she was doing beautifully. She had done all day. He looked up at Jess and felt his heart clench. Jess was looking at Rory with so much love and fear. He'd really stepped up for her and taken care of her and now he was watching her struggle through so much pain to give birth to their baby. Luke's attention was jerked back to Lorelai when a small sharp cry came from her and she burrowed deeper into his neck. "Mom?" Rory called. "I'm fine honey-ah... you just focus on pushing, okay?" "Okay," she answered and bore down hard. Lorelai adjusted her grip on Luke's arm as the contraction peaked and she gasped her way through it. "Oh, baby, I can see her head! Rory, she's right here!" Jess exclaimed, so much love and joy on his face. "Don't push! Rory, stop pushing!" Lorelai said, picking her head up off of Luke's shoulder to look at her daughter. "What?" Rory yelped. "Why?" "You could tear, and we can't get to the hospital. You have to let the contraction do the work. Small pushes if you absolutely have to." "Mom," Rory whined, her face red and anguished. "I know, baby, I know it hurts and it's hard not to push, but you'll hurt yourself, okay?" She said rubbing Rory's shoulder and pushing her hair off her face. Lorelai's own pain was mounting again, but she ignored it. Her baby needed her, and she didn't care about anything else. "Pant with me, honey," Lorelai said, getting closer to Rory's face and panting loudly for her daughter to mimic. Rory copied her mother and seemed to calm a degree. Lorelai looked down at the baby's head and tears came to her eyes. "Oh! Rory your daughter is coming! She's just right there, you're doing so great. Keep panting with me," and they did. They got through the long contractions together and Rory relaxed a little in Luke's arms. He leaned down and kissed the top of her head as she gulped down air. She was still in a great deal of pain from where her baby's head was halfway out. Jess couldn't believe his eyes. His baby was being born right in front of him. He never thought he'd be here, doing this, with her. He continued to gently rub her legs, trying to comfort her any way he could, though he'd really like to just be able to hold her through the pain. He was so proud of her for this. He couldn't believe how great she was. Lorelai had another contraction and put her head back on Luke's shoulder. Jess couldn't believe her either. She was being incredible, helping everyone and comforting Rory all while going through the same thing herself. He saw Luke kiss his wife's face and try to move himself closer to her without moving Rory who was still resting. He was suddenly very grateful to have this family. He only hoped he could be as good to Rory as Luke was to Lorelai. Luke kept his face close to lorelai's, wishing he could hold her as well. He wished there was a way to hold her and Rory in his arms and stop all the pain. He thought about Rory then. How strong and brave she was, how he was unnerved but unbelievably lucky to be here watching his daughter give birth to his granddaughter. Granddaughter. He still couldn't believe that. He felt the tension come back into Rory's frame as she gasped. Jess, seeing that Lorelai was still in pain herself took over coaching Rory to pant through the pain. "Oh, wow, honey, she's coming! Her head is moving!" He smiled broadly, and she managed to return it. Luke and Lorelai both watched then as the baby's head finally came out with a shout from Rory. "Jess, you have to... you have to feel around her neck for her cord. Make sure it's not there." Lorelai said then she winced hard and bowed her head against the pain, breathing out heavily. "I think I feel it!" Jess said with a note of panic in his voice. "Okay, it's okay, just see if you can hook it with your finger and pull it over her head," she said, trying to keep calm. Rory's grip tightened on Luke. "Okay, okay, I have it!" He said and concentrated hard on what he was doing. "I got it! I got it!" He said with relief as he pulled the cord from around her neck. "Push, Rory," Lorelai cheered, and push she did. She pushed so hard, she couldn't stop the scream from ripping out of her throat. Luke kissed her head again, then rested his head against hers while she squeezed all life out of his wrists. "Oh, honey, here she comes!" Lorelai yelled. Jess grabbed one of the towels next to him, keeping one hand under the baby's head. One shoulder, two shoulders, then everything was different. Everything changed. Jess was a father, Rory was a mother, Luke and Lorelai were grandparents, and Amelia Lorelai Mariano was here. Mia. Jess placed Mia on Rory's chest and then covered her with a towel. Luke began slowly putting Rory's legs down, but stayed behind her, his hands finally free to touch Lorelai. He put his hand on the side of her face and pulled her in for a kiss. She returned the kiss, then grimaced and placed her forehead against his. He touched her shoulder, ran his hand down her arm, and then her back. Oh, how he'd wanted to just touch her. To be able to comfort her like this. Her contractions had clearly gotten much worse since Rory had started delivering, but she had been strong for her girl. Lorelai looked down at Rory and Mia, Luke had never seen her face like that before. This was a more complete, more intense love than he'd ever seen. Jess was moving closer to take Mia back, and Luke realized that Rory was in pain again. He was just about to panic when he remembered the afterbirth and gently took hold of Rory's legs again and pulled them closer. She leaned back against his chest hard as she arched her back a little. He kissed the top of her head and she wrapped her hands back around his wrists. This was clearly not as painful or difficult for her as before, but she was tired and sore. Lorelai took Mia from Jess so he could take care of Rory. She could not believe how beautiful this baby was. Thankfully, she was Rory's spitting image. She knew Rory was nervous about how Jess would feel if the baby looked like Logan, but she was all Gilmore, this girl. Lorelai breathed steady as another contraction washed over her, and she concentrated her entire will on not squeezing the baby in her arms. She didn't immediately register that Rory had delivered the placenta, or that Jess had taken care of it. She came back around when Jess and Luke began helping Rory up off the floor. "What's going on?" "She's all done, so Jess is going to help her take a bath and get her settled in bed," Luke said as he held Rory up by one of her arms, Jess her other. "I'll be right back," he said and the three of them slowly left the room. Luke came back a minute later to find Lorelai having another contraction. "Already?" He asked as he sat down beside her. "Mhmmm," she replied without looking up at him. "They're getting really close, honey, how are you doing?" She couldn't answer right away, instead ducking her head lower and gasping. He put a hand on her back and rubbed gently. She breathed out a long heavy breath and then looked at him. "I'm really close, Luke. They need to come back and get her soon." "Okay, I'll go tell Jess to hurry, just hang in there." He came back right before she had another contraction and took the baby from her. She leaned against him and whimpered softly as it started. "He's getting her settled in the bath, then he'll come get Mia." She nodded against his shoulder and he kissed her head. "Where do you wanna be?" He asked softly, "and don't say the hospital," he said with mock sternness. "I wanna be at the hospital," she said, looking at him with sad eyes and he was sure his looked the same. " I know. I want you to be in the hospital too, I'm so sorry." She leaned her head into his and closed her eyes as a tear fell. "It's not your fault. There's nothing you could have done. We weren't in labor until after the roads were already impassible." She gasped and grabbed his thigh. "Luke," he looked up to see Jess, and handed him the newborn. "Let me know if I can help somehow." "Thank you," Luke said and Jess kissed Lorelai on the forehead "good luck, mom," he said and turned to leave. "Jess," Jess turned around "congratulations," Luke said, smiling. Jess smiled back then turned and took the baby to Rory's room. Luke turned his attention back to Lorelai and realized with a smile that for the first time in hours, he could give her his full attention. "It's just you and me now, baby, what do you need?" "You," she gasped, then breathed a sigh. "I'm so close, honey. They're right on top of each other. I wanna lay down I think." She said and looked up at the couch. "Yeah, okay, nice and slow," he said as he stood and helped her off the floor. "Oh, hang on. I should go ahead and take my pants off." He helped her take off her pants and underwear, then laid her down on the couch and covered her lower half with a blanket. She grabbed his hand and pulled him down to face level so that he was sitting on the floor right next to her. She turned on her side so she was facing him and scooted as close to him as she could, holding his hand with both of hers, his other, smoothing her wild hair back. "You were amazing with Rory. You always amaze me the way you put everyone else first-" she gasped "-make sure our daughter is delivering safely even while trying to have our son. You are a force of nature, lorelai, and I don't know how I got so lucky." She looked at him with tears in her eyes, but the moment was short lived because there was almost no break at all between contractions now. She clamped down on his hand again and tried to scoot even closer, but he leaned in and closed the gap. He put his face right in front of hers so they were breathing the same air and he just focused on her. He was surprised to realize that he wasn't worried about her like he'd thought he'd be. He wasn't freaking out or feeling dizzy. He was just focused on her and her needs. He hated the fact that she was in pain, of course, but after seeing what Rory had just done, after seeing Mia, he was mostly just excited. He was here to do whatever Lorelai needed from him. She gasped again and then moaned. Her breathing got faster and harsher, and he could suddenly sense her panic. "Hey, hey, you're alright, breathe slowly, slowly," he coached, showing her a rhythm. She was losing her grip on the situation. The pain was becoming too much for her to remain in control of. Transition, he thought. Yeah, they were so close. "Sweetheart, I think you're in transition, you're so close, just keep breathing through it and then you can push." She nodded against his face and kept trying to breathe. A moment later, the pain reached a new pitch. "Luke! Ahhh..." "I'm right here, sweetheart, I'm here, just breathe," he pulled her even closer and held tight. "Luke," she whined piteously into his chest. "I know, just hang on," he said into her hair. She was moaning almost continuously now, but she was breathing, so Luke just held her. "Luke! I have to push." She said suddenly and he leaned back far enough to look at her. "Okay, okay, start with small pushes like you told Rory." She nodded and pulled her top knee up to her stomach as far as she could. Luke put his other hand on it to help her have some traction to push against, and kept his other hand in both of hers. "Do you want to stay like this?" He asked. She didn't answer right away so he waited for her to finish the push. "For now. I can't get him out like this," she finally answered then closed her eyes and breathed deeply. The breaks in her contractions had finally come back. "I am so proud of you," he said and nuzzled her nose. She gave him a small smile, then grimaced as another contraction hit. He held her knee and she pulled his hand closer to her. She continued to give small pushes until one particularly ruthless contraction dug in, making her mouth drop open in a silent scream. This made Luke's hairs stand on end as he stared intensely at her face. "Lorelai?" He asked, his voice tense with worry. "Head!" She yelled and he just stared blankly at her. "His head, luke," she grit out and began to turn herself. He sat up and helped her onto her back, propping a couple of pillows against the arm of the couch so she could sit up a little. He moved down between her legs and sat down on the couch. She'd thrown her head back and her toes were curled from the pain. He moved the blanket so he could look, and sure enough, there it was. His son's head. "Yeah, Lorelai, his head is right here, sweetheart, small pushes and panting." She sat forward and grabbed his arms and he rested his hands on her legs, gently stroking them. They locked eyes as she pushed. He could tell she was doing her best to hold back, and it hurt. He glanced quickly down, but nothing had changed, so he caught her eye again and panted with her. "Good, baby, keep going," he soothed. She only had to push one more time to get her baby's perfect head out and that's when Luke began to cry. "He's almost here, honey! Our baby's head is in my hand!" He was beaming, and she gave him a huge smile and a happy sob in return, but it was short lived. With the rest of the contraction, she could finally push, so she did. The first shoulder came slowly and she cried out, stopping with the contraction and sobbing heavily. "Good, sweetheart. Almost done." She pitched forward and grabbed fistfuls of his flannel at his shoulders and screamed. He quickly looked back down just in time to catch their son as his second shoulder and the rest of his tiny body came out. She gave a sharp yell and a gasp and looked at their son, her chest heaving. Luke placed him on her chest and she held him as she fell back against the pillows. "Oh, thank you, Lorelai, thank you, he's perfect." Luke said and kissed her on the forehead before moving back off the couch next to her. "He is, isn't he," she said and started to gently clean him off with a soft towel. He looked at her and he saw that look of pure, complete love he'd seen earlier. He was sure she'd be able to see the same look on his face. "The best things happen to me when it snows," she smiled. She held their son gently to her chest as she delivered the afterbirth and Luke got rid of it, then she settled in to feed him. Later that night when they'd all had a bath and Lorelai was asleep in their bed, Luke sat in the rocker holding his son in his arms. He glanced at his sleeping wife, then back at the baby, and said "William Richard Danes, you won the lottery with your mama," and kissed Will on the forehead. Over in the bed, Lorelai couldn't help the corner of her mouth lifting a little. "Oh, baby, and that daddy..." she thought and drifted off.
