"I'm gonna try to make this quick, I want to thank the people who are still Following and Favs this story, and I am a bit sad those who left. I don't have a laptop I'm using my big sister's laptop and she only let's me use it once a day until the battery runs out. And I sometime go to the library but they only let me stay for a limited time cause other people have to do "actual" work. I would appreciate that you will be patient and stop reviewing me to update fast. Also I may write this story but it's thanks to my friends that help me edit and add more stuff to the story to make it better. So please be patient"

RainbowDash

Thank you Rainbow Dash for your review and Velocerstar239 the thing that I always hate in a story is that when they make the two characters fall in love fast. I almost did that same mistake with Hiccup and Merida, they will fall in love but not NOW. I want to take it nice and easy.

Chapter 05

A Viking man came in the Great Hall and walked towards the kitchen while holding two baskets full of fish. When he entered, he put both baskets down and stretches his back "Here you are Brenda, two baskets of fish" said the Viking man.

The person he was talking to was a Viking woman with brown hair that reaches her mid back and was tied up at the end. She was wearing a headband instead of a Viking helmet and has brown eyes. She looks like she can be in her twenties because of how young she looks but really she's in her thirties. Unlike the other Viking women who were big and had a lot of muscle, she was small and thin but not too thin. A smile forms on her face when she saw the two baskets "Thank ye very much Stig" she said "This should be enough for tonight's dinner".

"Are you making fish soup again?" asked the Viking man known as Stig "Maybe you should make something else?"

"Don't think Ah don't know what yoo're trying tae do" said Brenda with her arms crossed "Ah know that ye and everyone else wants yak for dinner again"

"What can I say Brenda? You're the best cook in all of Berk" said Stig with a sheepish smile.

Brenda makes a sly smile "Oh really? Do yae want me tae teel yer wife that?"

"Please don't" he said, fear for what his wife would say or do to him.

But the Viking man wasn't wrong, while most Viking women make food for their family; Brenda makes all the food in the Great Hall breakfast, dinner and even whenever there's a celebration. Brenda enjoys cooking even if she had to feed a whole village. Well she doesn't really need to feed them but there are some Vikings that don't know how to cook very well so she cooks for them or teach them how to cook. Also a few of the Viking women who decided to go find the nest, left their husbands and children alone so she didn't mind cooking for them either. She is referred to as the mother who feeds a thousand children, because she always makes enough food for everyone in the village. Everything grown on Berk is tough and tasteless, but Brenda somehow can make their food have flavor and make you want to have seconds. So she doesn't mind cooking for them, in fact she enjoys it, seeing everyone smiling and eating her cooking and complimenting her, makes her really happy. Just as long as there is no one in her way or someone telling her how to cook she can handle anything.

"MOOOOOM!"

And that includes her daughter Iona, her own flesh and blood. Brenda made a sigh wondering what her daughter could be upset about this time "AAM IN THE KITCHEN!" she yelled. She could hear her daughter's footsteps coming towards her, when she hears the door slam opened she turns around and sees her daughter out of breath "Hi sweetie!" smiled Brenda.

Iona was panting and Brenda could tell that she had run as fast as she could from the arena just to get here "M-Mom you will not believe-" she then noticed the Viking man who was in the room too "Oh hi Stig"

"Hello Iona" greeted Stig "Well I'll leave you ladies to your work"

The Viking man left the kitchen and Brenda began putting on her apron and getting all the utensils she needed to cook dinner "Sae Iona, how was dragon trainin' today?" she asked.

"You will not believe what happen at the arena" said Iona.

"Fishlegs was talkin' about th' different types of Dragons" guessed Brenda.

"No. I mean yes but that's not what I wanted to say" replied Iona.

"Merida was usin' her bow again?

"Surprisingly no"

"Snotlout was flirtin' with Astrid" said Brenda.

"He does that every day!"

"Fur once Ruffnut an' Tuffnut didn't fight each other?" guessed Brenda.

"Ragnarök can come tomorrow and they will still fight each other" stated Iona.

"Ah guess yer right" said Brenda "Sae what did happen at th' arena?"

"Hiccup took on the dragon and won".

When Iona said those words, her mother stopped in her tracks with what she was doing and looked at her with a blank expression wondering if she heard right "Hiccup did what?" Brenda asks.

"Hiccup took on the dragon, a Zippleback for that matter and won" Iona repeated.

The kitchen was quiet for a few second until Breda broke the silence by laughing, Iona was blushing feeling a little embarrass.

"Hi-Hiccup t-took oan the dragon!" said Brenda while still laughing "Iona Aam pretty sure that Loki day is in a few months"

Iona was getting really angry, she doesn't blame her mother for not believing her but this was no time for jokes "I'm not joking mom! Hiccup really took on the Zippleback!" shouted Iona.

Brenda stopped her laughter from hearing her daughter's shout; she looked at her and saw the serious expressing she was giving her. Brenda looked straight into Iona's honey colored eyes, and saw nothing indicating that she was lying. She could always tell when her daughter was serious or not, the same goes for her husband.

"Hiccup took oan the dragon?" Brenda asked with doubt.

"Yes" replied Iona.

"Oan his own?"

"Yes"

"And won?"

"Yes"

"Did he get hurt or burned?" asked Brenda.

"Not even a scratch!" exclaimed Iona.

Brenda brown eyes became wide and was a bit speechless, she didn't know if she should believe what she just heard or not "H-Hiccup? But how?"

"I know is sounds crazy but it's the truth. You can even ask Gobber or Gothi they saw the whole thing!" told Iona.

Brenda had a puzzled look but then took a deep breath; once she was calm she walked towards the two baskets of fish. She places one basket close to the counter, and then washed her hands and grab two knifes. Brenda had one knife on her right hand and extended the other knife to her daughter "Teel me everythin' that happened" she said.

Iona nodded at her; she took off her helmet and washed her hands. She put on her own apron and grabbed the knife from her mother's hand and started scrapping the scales off the fish.

While both Viking women were cooking, Iona started telling her mother every detail of what happened during dragon training. As Brenda heard her daughter talking about what Hiccup did, she really had a hard time believing in it. Is she really talking about Hiccup? The same Hiccup that makes inventions that ends up making a big disaster. How can it be the same Hiccup that dared challenge a Zippleback, a dragon that usually requires a one or two full grown Viking to handle, and he was only a teenager, a clumsy one too. To challenge it without a weapon and without even getting a scar or burned from it, it's just impossible.

"Then he closed the big doors to the dragon's cage and he leaves the arena as if he didn't just do something unbelievable" finished Iona.

"Ah don't blame ye. Even after hearin' ye say all that Ah can't really see Hiccup actually take oan a dragon all by himself" confessed Brenda.

"I don't blame you either. I still can't believe it even though I saw it with my own eyes. It's just doesn't make any sense" added Iona.

"Ah guess thes shows that he's full of hidden surprises" replied Brenda with a small smile as she was recalling of a certain someone who was the same "By th' way Iona, how was Merida?"

"How should I know?" answered Iona.

"Well did ye thank her for helpin' ye with th' Deadly Nadder?" inquired Brenda.

"Yes I thank her" mumble Iona.

"Stop lying" said Brenda.

Iona flinch her mother could always tell if she was lying or not, no matter what she said, her mother can always get the truth out of her. The same goes for her father.

"Well Iona?" spoke Brenda very seriously.

"No I didn't thank her" said Iona, knowing very well that she can never beat her mother. Neither can her father.

"For someone who's not afraid tae say what she's thinks, it must really be scary tae say 'Thank you' tae th' person who saved yer life" commented Brenda.

"She didn't save my life mom, I could have been fine. Besides I already repay my depth to her".

"Hmm that's true. Both of ye are even now, she saved yer life and ye saved hers".

"I guess" mumble Iona.

As both Viking women continue to cut the fish, Iona had a confuse look on her face, she was trying to figure out how Hiccup was able to handle the dragon 'How in Thor's name did he do that? All he did was put his arms forward and command the dragon to back off. And the Zipleback was scared of him, HIM. He's only small, skinny and weak. How can a beast like that be afraid of him? How can anybody be afraid of him?' thought Iona not realizing that she stopped cutting the fish.

Brenda notices her daughter was not cutting the fish and has a good idea what's on her mind "If ye want answers, why don't ye just ask heem?"

Iona snapped out of what she was thinking and looked at her mother "What?"

"Why don't ye ask Hiccup how he handle th' Zippleback?" suggested Brenda.

"Yeah not going to happen" replied Iona.

"Are ye that afraid of talkin' to heem?"

"Who can be afraid of HIM?!" she shouted with a small blush.

"Apparently the Zippleback" smirked Brenda.

Iona gave her mother a small glare and continued cutting the fish. She was already getting a headache from talking to her mother; every time they start to have a conversation it feels like a competition to see who is right and who is wrong. If it was, her mother takes the lead by a mile. Iona continue cutting the fish but she still couldn't stop thinking about Hiccup and wondering how he was able to take on the Zippleback.

When night time finally came, Hiccup wasted no time in making the saddle. Following his design he began cutting and stitching leather, and got other things that he needed to make it. He couldn't help but smile as he was making the saddle, he was really excited to finish it, and when he does he'll get to fly on Toothless again. The thought of it just made him even more excited. After a few hours past he finally finished it, he looked at it from the ground and was satisfied that it turned out the way he design it. He picked it up and was even more please with it, the only question now is, will Toothless let him put it on him? Something tells him that it will not be easy to put a saddle on a Night Fury, especially when no one has ever done it before. Hiccup cleaned and hid anything that could give away to what he was doing; once he was done he started walking home with the saddle.

Hiccup place the saddle next to his bed, took off his boots and fur vest and rested on his wooden bed. He had his hands on the back of his head and was looking at the ceiling; he was too excited for tomorrow. He will get to test and fly on Toothless again, and improve on his prosthetic fin. Of course Merida will be there which made him even happier because she was the only one who knew his secret and it's been a long time since they ever hang out together like friends. Hiccup wondered if they are friends but he also wondered if Merida wanted to be his friend again "I don't think she wants to be friends with a useless Viking like me" said Hiccup as turned to the left and began to sleep.

~0~

When Hiccup woke up, he got out of bed, washes his face and put on his boots and fur vest. He went outside and made his way to the great hall to have breakfast. As he was walking Hiccup notice some of the Vikings who were already awake and doing their jobs, were looking at him as soon as he walk by them. When he arrived at the Great Hall it was no different either; as he entered, the Vikings that were there eating breakfast were looking at him and whispering. Hiccup grabbed a plate of eggs and bread and sat down on an empty table, even as he ate he still felt everyone eyes on him. 'Why are they looking at me?' thought Hiccup. Ever since he was little well littler he was already used to everyone looking at him and talking behind his back because he was different and always causing trouble. But it felt different they didn't look at him like they hated him or that he was a nuisance, the look they were giving him was like they are trying to figure him out. Once he finish eating he quickly left and tried to not look back at the Vikings who were looking at him.

Hiccup was at the forge, cleaning, placing, and fixing all the things he does as the blacksmiths apprentice. He wanted to finish all his work so that he can go to the cove and try on the saddle on Toothless. Even as he worked he still notices everyone looking at him as they pass by the forge, he made a sigh and simply tried to ignore them.

"Morning"

Hiccup jumped out of surprise and drops the weapons he was holding making the sound of falling metal be heard through the entire forge. He looks up and saw that it was Merida by the window and had a surprise look on her face.

"Oh M-Morning Merida" said Hiccup smiling nervously.

"Sorry. Didn't mean tae scare you" she said.

"It-It's alright" reassured Hiccup as he picks up the weapons.

To his surprise Merida entered the smithy and picked up some of the weapons and placed them exactly where they should be. He places the weapons he's holding at the same place as well.

"Thanks" smiled Hiccup.

"No problem" said Merida as she starts to look around the forge.

Hiccup returned working and simply let Merida explore around the forge. He saw her looking at some things in the back of the forge picking them up and then place them back. He didn't really mind her being here; she used to do it when they were little. As he recalled every time he was working with Gobber, Merida would ask him to play but he couldn't since he had to work. So she would either wait outside until he was done or look around the smithy. Of course she would touch a few weapons and made a few messes much to Gobber's dislike. Hiccup smiled as he recalled the memories, then he notices two pair of Vikings passing by and they were looking at him. It was the same look he's been getting all morning, but he didn't know why?

"Umm... M-Merida"

Merida was holding a sword inspecting it but then turned her attention to Hiccup.

"Have you noticed that everyone is acting kind of strange?" he asked.

"What do ye mean?" she inquired.

Hiccup then scratched his head "Well everyone has been looking at me and talking behind my back"

Merida tilt her head a little and had a confuse expression, Hiccup mentally slap himself understanding why she would be confuse "I-I mean more than usual. It's different because they don't look at me like they hate me or I'm a nuisance. It's like they're studying me or something" he explained hoping that she understood.

"Oh" said Merida understanding what he means "It's coz of what happen yesterday"

"What do you mean?" asked Hiccup raising an eyebrow.

"Did yae really think that everyone, especially Gobber. Wooldn't start talkin' about what yae did at dragon trainin'?" she questioned him.

"Oh… right" said Hiccup, he should have known that this would happen. No doubt that the whole village knows about his fight against the Zippleback, he's also worried that Gobber went a bit overboard on how he told them.

Merida put down the sword and crossed her arms "It's been gonnae oan since yesterday. I'm surprised ye haven't notice?"

"Well I was busy trying to avoid Gobber asking me how I handle the Zippleback. Also I was distracted with making the saddle" answered Hiccup.

"Is it finish?" Merida asked.

Hiccup smiled "Yep. And it's ready for testing".

"What's ready for testing?"

Both Merida and Hiccup flinch as they saw Gobber entering the smithy and Hiccup began to stammer "G-Gobber hi! I-I mean uh morning!"

"Morning. What's this about testing?" asked Gobber.

"Oh just umm uh a-a-a new invention that I want to try out!" replied Hiccup hoping that he doesn't asked further.

"I see" Gobber then noticed Merida presence in the smithy and he made a questionable look on his face as he looked between two of them "Well this is a rare sight" he said.

"W-What do you mean?" asked Hiccup feeling a bit nervous.

"Seeing you and Merida together" replied Gobber.

"Oh! It's r-really nothing. Merida was just uuuh asking me to make her more arrows" said Hiccup with a nervous smile.

Gobber sigh then looked at Merida "I know you're good with a bow and arrow lass. But they won't do you any good when you go up against a dragon"

Merida force herself not to roll her eyes for what Gobber said having already heard it like a hundred times by mostly everyone "Ah know. By th' way Ah need a new sword".

Gobber nodded at her then looks back at Hiccup "So I take it you had breakfast already?"

"Yep! I-It was really good" replied Hiccup.

"Good cause we got a lot of weapons to fix. And you still have to tell me how you handled that dragon yesterday" says Gobber.

"Sure" said Hiccup knowing very well that he couldn't get himself out of it.

"Now let's get to work!" said Gobber as he switches his hook for a hammer.

"I'll be going then" said Merida making her way out but not before whispering to Hiccup "Are ye still going to the cove?"

Hiccup looked at Gobber hoping he doesn't hear them and whispered back "As soon as I finish my work I'll head over"

"Make sure tae get me when yae go" she told him seriously.

"Don't worry, I will"

Merida gave a nod and left the forge and Hiccup continued with his work.

~0~

Throughout the day Hiccup did his best to avoid the topic of yesterday's training, but Gobber was not one to give up so easily. Every time he brings up the dragon Hiccup would try to add something to the conversation to throw him off, Gobber didn't notice but will still try to ask again. But it got bad when other Vikings came to pick up their weapons and asked about what happened at the arena. It got even worse when Gobber told the story and added things that never actually happen. The only thing Hiccup could do was try to change the subject and hope that they will give up on asking him.

Meanwhile…

Merida was in the forest practicing her archery skill like she does every day. She was in an area that she made it into her archery training and where no one comes, unless you count birds, squirrels or wild boars. She also place wooden targets at the trees, which held lots of arrows over the years she's been practicing. She took a deep breath and draws her arrow back and aimed it at the target that was 25 feet away to her left. After a few seconds she let go of the arrow and it hit the center. She turned right, drew another arrow from her quiver on her waist and let it go and it hit the center. She grabbed another arrow turned about face and hit again the target. She turned around aimed and let go of the arrow but…

"I've missed" said Merida disappointed that she didn't hit the target. She walked to where her arrow went and picks it up. She puts it back in her quiver and decided to end practice for today.

Merida looked up at the sky and wondered how long she's been practicing, sometime she would practice so much she end up practicing till the sun set. She also wondered if Hiccup had finished his work at the smithy, if he did she knows that he would be looking for her so that they can go and see the Night Fury.

'But he doesn't know that Ah practice in thes area' thought Merida.

After a few minutes pass Merida was back at the village and made her way towards the smithy, as she pass by Merida ignored the looks that the other Vikings were giving her. She knows why they gave her that look, and she was getting tired of it. As she was getting close to the smithy her eyes could see Gobber grinding a sword on the wheel and she can hear his singing too. But she saw no signs of Hiccup anywhere in the smithy. She turned around and decided to head to his house had she stayed a bit longer she would have seen Hiccup walking out from the small room. When she arrived at Hiccup's house she called and got no response that he was there, which got her thinking that Hiccup already finished his work and went looking for her. But she's been practicing all morning and he didn't know where her training area is. 'IF he's been lookin' for me, he could have givin' up and went tae th' cove tae try th' saddle' with that in mind Merida made her way towards the cove.

~0~

Merida arrived at the entrance to the cove, as soon as she entered she looked around and was surprise to see that Hiccup was nowhere in the cove. The only thing she saw was none other than the Night Fury sleeping soundly near the lake. For a moment Merida thought that the dragon might have eaten him but shook that idea off 'Is he still workin' or lookin' fur me?' wondered Merida.

Just when she was going to head back she notice the Night Fury waking up, it stretched its back and had clawed the ground leaving marks on it. The Night Fury shook his head and looks around the cove as if he was looking for someone when he looks up he was surprise to see the same red hair Viking girl from yesterday. Merida didn't move from her spot and just looked at the dragon's green eyes, after a moment of making eye contact the Night Fury gives a snort and looks away. Merida didn't know why but she felt a bit mad that the Night Fury didn't want to acknowledge her presence. She then sees the dragon walking close to the lake looking at nothing but the water. After a minute pass the Night Fury dives its head in the water and snaps at the fish that swan by.

"He's hungry" voiced Merida as she watched the Night Fury try over and over aging to catch a fish.

But no matter how many times he snaps at them, the dragon couldn't catch a single one. Merida was getting tired of watching the dragon fail to get a fish, so without even thinking twice Merida began making her way down to the cove; once she got down she made her way towards the dragon. Call her crazy for going near a Night Fury without Hiccup being there, but Merida couldn't just stand there and watched as the dragon was struggling to get food.

The Night Fury ears went up as he heard the sound of footsteps, he turns his head and his eyes became narrowed when he sees that the red hair Viking girl was coming towards him. He started taking a few steps back and growled at her. Merida stopped in her tracks feeling a bit scared but she took a deep breath and continues on. The Night Fury keeps walking backwards being weary at the red hair girl. Merida reaches the shore of the lake and looks around the water. She still heard the growled of the Night fury but ignores it and continues looking at the lake. When her blue eyes caught sight of some fishes, she grabbed an arrow from her quiver and places it on her bow but it causes the Night Fury to growl louder.

Merida looks at the dragon and gave him a small glare "Och quit it. It's nae for yae!"

The Night fury was surprise that she responded to him like that but was still being cautious towards her. Merida ignore his glare and look back at the water, when she saw the fishes she pull the arrow back and kept her eyes on one specific fish. The Night Fury concluded that the red hair girl wasn't intending to shoot him with her arrow and started to get curious to what she was doing. As the dragon walked slowly towards her, he could tell that she was focus on the water.

After a few more seconds Merida released her arrow which made the Night Fury jump back a bit, the arrow was planted firmly on the water. Merida placed her quiver on the ground then took off her boots and when her feet made contact with the water she shivered since it was cold but continued walking towards the arrow. With her right hand she pulls the arrow out of the water, and on the arrow was a fish. The Night Fury eyes widen with surprise that the red hair girl caught a fish, and then he sees her walking out of the water and was looking at him.

The Night Fury looks at her with cautious but then was surprise when she took the fish out of her arrow and offered it to him. The dragon wondered if that was her intention all along to help him get a fish, Merida look at the Night Fury with a blank expression and waited if he wanted the fish or not. The Night Fury took a few steps closer to the girl and opened his mouth, Merida eyes widen a bit for seeing nothing but gums in the dragon's mouth.

"It really does look like ye don't hae-"

In a flash the Night Fury's teeth appeared and he quickly snatches the fish from the girl's hand which cause her to hold her hand. The Night fury took a few bites on the fish than swallowed it whole. "T-Teeth" said Merida, still a bit surprise and she looks at her left hand checking to see if she lost a finger and to her relief she has all five of them. Merida look back at the Night Fury and became still as she saw him getting close to her, they were face to face both of them making eye contact. Merida's heart was beating from nervousness but a bit excited too. Then she heard the dragon making a regurgitated sound and she knew what he was going to do, she took a step back and saw him cough up a chunk of the fish he ate on the ground. Merida looks at the fish with disgust and then looks at the dragon that was looking at her and she knew that he was waiting for her to eat it. Merida look between the dragon and the fish and gave a nervous look "No" she said bluntly.

The Night Fury was confused then uses his paws to move the fish towards the red haired girl "No" she repeated.

The Night Fury then glare at her feeling a bit offended that she didn't want to eat the fish he's offering to her. He grabbed the fish in his mouth and walked closer towards the red hair girl and dropped the fish close to her feet. He look at her in the eyes and glared, Merida made a sigh and crossed her arms and challenge the dragon with her own glare "I'm nae eatin' it" she stated.

The Night Fury growled at her and was making a few noises; almost as if he was trying to talk to the Viking girl, he made one final sound and glared at her. Merida shrugged her shoulders "Sorry, Ah don't speak dragon" she said. The Night Fury had an annoy expression, snorted and turned his head away from her. Merida made a small laugh and pick up the fish, the dragon looked at her thinking that she was going to eat it but instead saw her go to the water and was cleaning the fish. Merida turned back and offered the fish again, earning a questionable look from the dragon "Ah appreciate th' offer… but no thank ye" she said giving the dragon a small smile "Ah did what Ah did coz Ah wanted tae do it, nae coz Ah wanted somethin' in returned"

The Night fury looked at her for a moment making Merida think she was being silly into thinking that the dragon even understood what she was saying. But then the Night Fury decided to take the fish from her but took it gently much to the girl surprise, and swallowed it whole again.

Merida smiled and then tried her luck by reaching her hand out to try and touch the dragon but the Night fury knew her intention and growled at her. Merida took her hand back and shrugged "Fair enough" since she wouldn't eat his fish it's obvious that he wouldn't let her touch him. Suddenly she heard a sound and thought that the dragon was growling at her again but really it was his stomach indicating that he was still hungry. Merida gave a small laugh which earned her an annoyed look from the Night Fury "Hold oan".

Merida grabbed another arrow from her quiver and walked back to the lake and scanned it, after a few seconds she spotted another fish. She pulls her bow back, held it for a moment then released it and was planted at the water. She walked towards the arrow, pulls it out and smiled as she shows the fish she caught to the dragon. The Night Fury looked surprise and was quiet impresses by the Viking girl skills with the bow and arrow. Merida took out the fish from her arrow and threw it to land on the ground but the Night Fury quickly caught it and a second later ate the whole fish. Merida was surprised but then laughed seeing that the dragon couldn't wait until it landed. She stopped laughing and saw the Night Fury was pleased for the fish she gave him "Want another one?" she asked.

As if he understood, the Night fury nodded at her and Merida couldn't help but smile that she was actually bonding with the most deadly dragon in all of history. As she looked back at the water to catch another fish part of her couldn't help but wonder one thing.

'Whaur could Hiccup be?'
