Little Tsuki Ga Kirei story I wrote after first watching this wonderful, heart-warming anime, which I absolutely love. :)

Disclaimer: I don't own Tsuki Ga Kirei.

"Look, Kotaro, the moon is beautiful tonight."

Akane gazed up wistfully at the full moon in the sky. It stood apart from the large clouds looming overhead, which seemed to be giving it a space of its own to shine. It was glowing brightly to illuminate the night, shimmering as magically as the Christmas lights that filled the town square.

"I can see, Akane. It's as beautiful as it was on the night I asked you out."

Akane's cheeks went a bright shade of red. It wasn't the cold, crispy evening air that was causing them to change colour. In fact, she could feel them heating up over the memory brought up by the young man standing by her side. They were all alone together, realising the festive atmosphere surrounding them.

"I'm glad I get to be under this beautiful moon with you, Curly-Kun."

Kotaro's heart raced. He felt his insides tingle as they always did upon hearing Akane call him by the affectionate nickname which she had given him when they were just children. If there was one thing that hadn't changed about him since his teenage years, it was his messy bed hair.

As he gazed towards the love of his life, holding her hand in his own, Kotaro smiled at her.

"You know what else is beautiful?" he asked.

"Is it the Christmas tree?" Akane guessed cheerfully, pointing towards the enormous tree standing before them. It towered over the entire town square, glistening with fairy lights and shiny baubles with a large golden star at the very top.

"It's you, Akane. No moon or Christmas tree could ever compete against you. It's you who is truly beautiful."

A soft gasp escaped the young woman. Her mouth fell open as her heart raced inside her chest. She gaped in wonder at how the person she had loved since childhood described her. They had come a long way from when they could only feel confident enough to communicate through instant messaging on their cell phones. How wonderfully Kotaro made her feel inside when he complimented her verbally.

"You're the most beautiful person in my life - and the most important." Kotaro held her hand in both of his, locking his loving gaze with her. "You always have been ever since we were kids."

Akane gazed with astonishment at her boyfriend, wondering where all he was saying about her was coming from. She was at a complete loss for words - which allowed him to let out more.

"I always wished for us to never be apart - and that desire only grew stronger when you moved away..."

For a moment, Kotaro went quiet. His lips trembled at the heartbreaking memory of his beloved girlfriend moving cities. Akane was just about to ask him if he was alright - when the young man lifted his gaze as a smile crossed his face.

"I vowed I was not going to lose you. I made sure to keep the messages going between us - telling myself that one day, we would be together again. No brief visits, no phone calls... Back in each other's lives for good!"

Still holding Akane's hand in both of his, Kotara moved closer to her. The shade of red on her face turned deeper than before. Even all these years later, she still felt shy when the one she loved was near to her.

"And here we are now," Kotaro continued softly. "Back together at last. I thank the heavens every day for my wish for us to reunite coming true. That is something I will always be eternally grateful for..."

"Kotaro..." Akane murmured, but Kotaro held up a hand, silencing her.

"And now that we are back together, I want us to never be apart again... Not ever do I want us to be separated again... I want to spend my entire life with you..."

As the moon shone down on the young couple, Akane's eyes widened at Kotaro went down on his knees before her. Keeping hold of her hand in one of his, he used the other to take something out of his pocket. He held it up in the moonlight for his loved one to clearly see.

Akane gasped.

She was amazed at what Kotaro was holding out towards her.

It was the squeezable stress toy she had bought for him when they were children; identical to the one she had carried with her all her life.

Placed around the pink doll's neck, reflected in Akane's widened eyes full of awe, was a shiny, diamond ring.

"Kotaro..." Akane cried.

"Akane Mizuno..."

Kotaro paused, squeezing the toy out of the nervousness he felt over her impending response to the important, heartfelt question he was about to ask her.

"Will you marry me?"

"YES!"

The entire town square was filled with all the elation that was in Akane's instant reply. As soon as Kotaro shot up in amazement, his worries disappearing, she threw herself at him and embraced him tightly. There had been no need for her to think about her response to question he'd asked her. Spending her life with the one she loved was something she didn't need to consider for a second.

"Yes, I will!"

His nervousness gone, Kotaro smiled warmly down at Akane, wrapping his arms around her. He held her closely, overwhelmed with joy. The girl he had loved since childhood had just agreed to be his wife. He could not have asked for a better Christmas present.

As the two of them stood locked in their embrace, snowflakes began to fall from the sky. They covered the ground and stuck to their hair and clothing, yet the moon continued to shine down on them. Still holding onto one another, they pulled away to each other with all their undying, never-ending love.

Very gently, Kotaro used his thumb to caress Akane's soft cheeks, causing them to go redder than before - matching the shade on his own face.

"Merry Christmas, Akane..."

"Merry Christmas, Kotaro..."

After softly exchanging their festive greetings, the newly-engaged couple pressed their lips together. Standing in the shimmering moonlight and the falling snowflakes, they kissed with all their love.

How far they had come from instant messaging one another from afar. Now they were forever to be in each other's lives - as husband and wife.
