Chapter 16
The dark seemed to engulf him more and more, as he crawled deeper into the tunnel. It was as if the seemingly endless darkness didn't want to end and Peter was afraid he had chosen a wrong path, because he had to turn once. But all his worries vanished, when he finally saw a faint light at the end of the tunnel, which penetrated through the bars of a square exit hatch.
But something stopped the boy and he put his index finger onto the little button in his ear to speak to Yondu.
"Yondu. Why is there light? I thought there was nobody here?"
"Calm down, kid. This is most likely the emergency power device that turned on when ya entered the tunnel. Here is far and wide nobody but us. So you can go on. You are alone in there. Our tracking devices don't report activities other than your own. We have everything under control."
The words calmed him down a bit and once again he took a deep breath, before he had the courage to remove the grid. The noise of the grating, as it hit the metal floor, made Peter shudder and even if Yondu had just told him he was alone, he paused and listened. The bang of the grating echoed in the empty corridors of the facility, sounding like a cannon blow in Peter's ears, but nothing moved. There was no voice or footsteps moving into his direction. It remained quiet and only the wild beating of his heart and the rush of his own blood was the only thing he could hear and so he gathered his courage and got out of the ventilation shaft.
Fortunately, the ground was not too far away, so the jump didn't go too deep and he didn't get injured, as a broken leg wouldn't be very beneficial. Especially since Yondu and his Ravagers had no way to enter the facility and rescue him, should he hurt himself badly. So he had to be more careful.
"I'm in now, Yondu. What should I do?"
"Tell me what ya see."
The boy looked around.
"I'm standing in a long, bright corridor. I can see a red door to the right of me."
"Good. You are very close. From the red door ya go to the right. From there ya would have to come to a lab. There ya will also find a storage room. There ya will find the device that ya should get for us."
There was a brief cracking sound before Yondu spoke again.
"You're doing very well, kid. I am proud of ya."
Then the contact broke off again and Peter felt a small smile pulling on his lips.
Yondu was proud of him...
"The kid really has guts," Tullk addressed the word to his Captain, as he stepped next to him. The two of them stared silently at the huge facility and Tullk couldn't help but noticing how nervous and tense the Centaurian was.
"Is everything alright, Captain?" he asked, for which he only got a nod in response. But nothing changed in Yondu's attitude. He remained tense and his eyes steadily searched the environment.
"You're tense," he remarked and he began to search the area with his eyes as well.
"It's so quiet here..." Yondu whispered and even Tullk felt a shiver crawling down his spine. His Captain was right. It was indeed very quiet on this planet. Almost too quiet...
"Where are the inhabitants of this planet? I thought they had a village built nearby?"
"They did. They probably saw how we landed here and don't dare getting close to us. But still...find some scouts and search the area. I don't want to be in an ambush!"
"Aye, Captain."
He watched Tullk as he disappeared around a corner of the building with two other Ravagers and how they drew their weapons. He, too, remained tense and his hand moved to his Yaka arrow as if by itself. If this was an ambush, he would be prepared. He didn't care about his crew, because they knew how to defend themselves when it came to an attack. He was worried about Peter, because he was alone in there. But a glance at the scanner in his hand told him that the boy was still alone. A small red dot, moving slowly through one of the corridors, showed him Peter's position and he kept a close eye on the boy. He was almost at his destination, but then the red dot stopped and didn't move anymore.
"Peter? Do ya hear me? What's happening? Why are you stopping?"
There was a static noise, but no answer.
"Peter?"
Another static noise, until...
"I can hear you, Yondu."
"What's happening?"
"I...I'm scared..."
"Come on, kid. A Ravager knows no fear."
"You don't see what I see here!"
"Describe it to me."
"The corridor in front of me is pitch-dark and there, around the corner, a lamp must be broken, because the light, what I can still see, flickers. And I think I just heard something that sounded like a growl."
"A growl? That can't be, Pete. There is nothing but you in there. Yer brain just plays a trick on ya. Take a deep breath and try to move on. You are so close to the goal. Ya don't want to give up now, do ya?"
For a moment, there was silence at the other end of the line, until...
"No, Yondu..."
"Good boy. We have you in view. It's all right. Just keep going. A Ravager ain't afraid of the dark..."
"I am no Ravager..."
"Not yet, but if you get out of there, you're one."
"Do you mean that seriously?"
"Finish the mission and find out."
He knew that the boy always accepted challenges; doesn't matter how scared he was and here it was just the same situation, because the contact broke off and Yondu grinned slightly when he saw how the red dot slowly moved forward again. He really had to give him that: Peter had courage!
"Captain!"
The grin died on his face, as soon as Tullk's excited voice reached his ears and he could see out of the corner of his eye, as the three Ravagers came running up to him. Tullk ran ahead and the other two followed him a little slower and as Yondu looked closer, he saw that the two were carrying something.
"What happened? What's this?"
"We have a problem, Captain!" Tullk gasped as he came to a halt in front of Yondu and made room for the other two, who threw a corpse to the ground. A damned nasty looking corpse!
"That may explain why we haven't seen other forms of life here. They are all dead! There must have been a real carnage back there, Captain. Blood and shredded corpses everywhere!"
Yondu said nothing, eyed the corpse at his feet and shuddered. Nevertheless, he knelt down to take a closer look at the lifeless body. Dark red blood still spilled from the myriad wounds, showing the Centaurian that this creature wasn't dead very long. It was completely disfigured when Yondu turned it on his back and he shuddered again when he couldn't even identify it anymore. The skull had been broken up and the brain was missing. On the rest of his body he saw several deep scratches and bites. Powerful claws and teeth seemed to have enjoyed themselves here...
When he raised his head, he saw the other Ravagers standing around him, eyeing the body at their feet.
"What kind of creature does that?" he heard a question.
"I've never seen anything like that!" said another and Yondu only growled before he got up and turned to his crew.
"I've seen something like this before! That's bad! Damn bad! Ya two contact the Milano on the spot. Tell Gef and Halfnut to bring the damn spaceship right here! Ya others secures the area. Tullk, ya stay with me. We have to get Peter out of there right now!"
No one dared to contradict the orders and they all did what their Captain demanded of them. Tullk followed him and he felt his own heartbeat quicken, for he had never seen Yondu as nervous as he was now. The naked fear was reflected in his red eyes and his eyes searched the area in panic, as he tried to contact Peter.
"What's going on, Captain?"
Yondu turned his head towards him and the next word made even Tullk panic.
"Klyntar..."
Author's note:
I have had much fun with this and the following chapter for sure, for I loooooove writing horror stuff.
And I have to admit this: Before I even started writing this story, I knew I wanted to have a Klyntar in this longfic the moment I saw the Vemom trailer in summer 2018, but back then I knew nothing about these Aliens, for I was still so new to Marvel. And now comes the funny fact: These chapters have been the one and only reason why I wanted to watch "Venom". Well, nobody could have guessed that this would escalate so much, for I have become a "Venomholic" XD. I mean in the end I have written more Venom stories than GOTG stories (and I own way more Venom comics than GOTG comics by now XD). But yeah, I only wanted to watch it for my story... XDD Now you know what was the reason for my Venom obsession ;). I just wanted to point this out, because this and the following chapter has nothing to do with my ongoing Venom obsession, because it was already planned BEFORE I watched the movie ;).
