Suki sat alone outside HQ when the Watchdog's returned. She didn't say a word the whole way back, nobody did. They had lost Jack, one of their own, and the worst part was they were no closer to stopping Creek and the Raptors. The Raptors had them in a situation they didn't know how to overcome. The Watchdogs knew the army Creek sent after them were brainwashed people, innocent victims forced against their will to fight. He even took family members of the Watchdogs to trap them.
That's what made this situation a hundred percent more challenging. The Watchdogs couldn't kill them because that would mean killing innocent people. But at the same time those same innocent people would be attempting to kill them at all cost. Branch was being faced with a challenge he had never faced before, and as they flew back to HQ, the reality of the failed mission and Jack's death sitting in, Branch had to admit he had no answers.
The last several hours didn't hit anybody more than Suki. Not only did she see her own wife try to kill her, but Jack died because Suki refused to flee without trying to reach Lena. Jack's death was her fault, and as she sat alone outside, she buried her head in her knees and cried her eyes out.
"I'm so sorry, Jack, I am so, so sorry."
"Suki?" Turning around Suki saw Astrid approaching her, a look of concern etched on her face.
"It's my fault Astrid," Suki cried as she buried her head in Astrid's shoulder. "Jack's death, it's my fault."
"No," Astrid whispered, wrapping her arms around Suki trying to comfort her friend. "No, it's not your fault. Don't think that."
"Yes it is Astrid!" Suki cried "If I didn't go back for Lena, if I didn't try to help her, Jack would still be here!"
"She is your wife Suki, nobody blames you for doing what any loving spouse would try to do. You got to realize that."
"It still doesn't take away that Jack died because of my actions."
Suki, look at me." Astrid took Suki by the hands and had Suki stare straight into Astrid's eyes. "You want to save your wife right?"
"Yes."
"Than to do that you cannot continue to blame yourself for what happened out there. Jack's death isn't your fault, it's Creeks. He was the one that abducted her, he was the one that turned her into a weapon. He is the one that made her kill Jack. You are blaming and hating yourself for what happened but the only one you need to blame is Creek. Turn your anger towards them, use your anger and avenge Jack's death and save your wife. But stop blaming yourself. Jack wouldn't want that and neither would Lena. We need you right now Suki. We need you to be at your top performance. We lost one soldier, several more are injured and a couple more are missing. We cannot afford to have you feeling sorry for yourself. We need you to be the soldier you have been since you took your oath as a Watchdog."
Suki sighed as she looked back down at the ground. "I don't know if I can be that Suki anymore. This war, it has turned me into someone I don't even recognize anymore. I murdered someone in cold blood I gave into my anger and as a result I chose vengeance over justice. I... I don't know how much longer I can do this."
"Hey listen, this was your wife that was abducted, your family..."
"That still don't justify what I did. I am a soldier, I am supposed to keep my head on straight and react the right way. Ever since The abduction I haven't been thinking clearly, I ran off to seek vengeance, I murdered someone and then I ignored a order to retreat and it got someone killed. I... I can't do this anymore Astrid."
"Suki..."
"Astrid you don't know how my last couple of days have gone!" Suki interrupted. "When my Chronel accelerator was destroyed, all that was on my mind was rather or not I would see my family again. I was so scared that I wouldn't come back, or if I did it wouldn't be for years and Emily would have grown up without me. I... I don't want Emily to grow up with only one mother to take care of her. I want her to grow up experiencing the love of both her moms and not worried that I may leave for a mission and not come back home. I want her to actually know me."
Astrid was left speechless as Suki continued "Before Emily, it was easy, because even though I love Lena, knowing I had her full support made going to war easier. But ever since we brought Emily into our lives, all I think about is one day I may leave for battle and not come back, and Lena will be left raising her on her own. Now Lena is in danger and it's because Creek is using her to try to destroy me. Now my fear is that we might both die and Emily will be an orphan. I cannot do this anymore Astrid. After I free Lena, after we stop Creek, I am retiring from the Watchdogs. I want to see Emily grow up, I want her to have memories with me."
Suki choked up as she said the last part. "I want her to know me."
Astrid didn't know what to say, staying speechless for several seconds. Finally she just wrapped her arms around Suki and gave her the biggest hug she had ever given her before. "Then let's save the world together to make sure Emily get's to make those memories, with BOTH her moms."
Tooth and Scarlett laid side by side in different medical beds. Both laid unconscious and on respirators as Barb checked over them. Scarlett had lost a lot of blood and if it wasn't for Tooth's quick actions with her nano technology Scarlett would have easily died out there from blood loss. She was still badly burned however from the explosion along with Tooth, and as Barb stared down as her mentor laid unconscious Barb took Tooth's cosmic staff and worked frantically to save her life.
"Come on Tooth, you have to make it," Barb cried. "You gave me a second chance at life. Saved me from the Raptors, took me in. I owe everything to you. Please, you got to pull through to me."
Branch and Poppy stood on the outside of the infirmary and watched as they put their daughter's life in the hands of this former Raptor doctor. Poppy could tell how nervous Branch was, the only doctor Branch had ever trusted since the Watchdogs was formed was Tooth. Now Tooth had become a patient herself and now the only doctor that could heal his child was a doctor that at one time worked for their enemy. To say Branch was uncomfortable would be a massive understatement, but with Tooth also hurt, he had no other choice.
"You better save my daughter Barb," Branch growled below his breath.
"After all these years you still have trust issues?" Poppy asked "Barb has worked alongside Tooth for a while, if she didn't trust her, she wouldn't have brought her to us."
Branch just scoffed at the situation. "Putting my daughter's life in the hands of a former Raptor, what has my life come to?"
"Branch whatever Barb's past may be, she is one of us now. She wants to do good."
"Maybe," Branch sighed "We've just lost so much, the Raptors have always been one step ahead of us on everything, and now with Jack gone, several of our teams loved ones being brainwashed to fight for them, my daughter and Tooth fighting for their lives. I'm... I'm at a lost. I can't lose anyone else Poppy, I can't lose Scarlett again."
Poppy went silent as Branch sat down on a bench outside the infirmary. "For eight years I thought I had lost you, lost my child. During those eight years I had also lost myself. I became this could ruthless vigilante who's only purpose was to hunt down those who took you from me. Even when I found out you was alive I spent nine years away from the two of you. My daughter is nearly an adult and I have barely begun to know her. I don't want to lose her now that I finally have a chance to know her."
Poppy wrapped her arm around Branch, understanding why he was so scared. "I'm scared for her to Branch, but I also trust that she is in the right hands."
"It's not just Scarlett I'm scared for though. But also the world. I don't know how to beat the Raptors right now. I'm the leader, the world looks to me for answers but I have none right now. How can we win this war when I don't know what our next move is?"
"That's why you have a team Branch. You don't have to plan alone. I'm here, your team is here. Trust me, trust them. With all of us working together, we will somehow find a way to stop Creek and save the world."
Reby was resting in her bed, finally able to get some sleep after spending nearly a whole twenty four hours watching Emily. As she slept her guardian angel appeared again.
"Everything I have predicted has come true Reby,"
"Yet I am still no closer to knowing what you need of me!"
"You are more than just that Mech suit, you have skills that you have forgotten about. Skills that are crucial to saving the world."
"What Skills?" Reby screamed "All I was good at before I was a Watchdogs was video games. How can I save the world with video games."
"Think hard Reby? How was it that the Raptors took over your cousin, took over all those people?"
"They used a chip but I don't see how that helps me in any way."
"All those chips are ran through a satellite, as well as all the chips controlling the robots. You destroy the satellite you break the curse."
"But how can I destroy the satellite without my mech? I can't pilot a rocket especially in my condition."
"You don't have to Reby. Think hard Reby, how can you use your skills to destroy that satellite."
Reby thought long and hard suddenly it donned on her. "What if I controlled a drone remotely, like in one of those old arcade games."
"Now your on to something."
"But how am I going to get a drone?"
"Think, who do you know that might be able to provide you with what you need."
Suddenly the light bulb went off. "I know what to do!"
Reby instantly woke up and turned to Satin and Chenille, who were both sharing a book in their medical bed.
"How are you two feeling?"
"Great actually, Tooth's magic sure has helped."
"Can you get me to a wheelchair, I need to get to Branch."
Poppy was still comforting Branch when Satin and Chenille both pushed Reby out to the hallway.
"I know how to stop this war!"
One hour later Branch called an emergency meeting with everyone who was still physically capable of attending.
"I know this forty eight have been rough. We have experienced the loss of one of our own as well as seen people we love fall under the Raptors control. But I have called you all here because we believe we may have found an answer to save everyone and break Creek's grip on them."
Reby then spoke up. "As we all know Creek has access to all internet due to his extreme augmentations. He is able to control and hack into any type of security system he wants because his augmentations gives him access to the satellite systems that circle the earth. I believe that the chips he has in our friends are being controlled by one of those satellites. If my theory is correct then if we can destroy that satellite than we can possibly not only free our friends but the robots that he is also controlling before they destroy the world."
"But how are we exactly supposed to do that?" Bridget asked
Reby turned to Satin and Chenille. "Can you two make me a drone that I can control remotely and can make in into space?"
"We can try," Chenille replied. "It would be difficult and we would need Scarlett's help on a project this massive but it's possible."
"Good, I would also need a camera attached so I can have a clear view of it from all times from the computers."
Guy Diamond raised his hand. "That's all fine and dandy but even if you are right how are we supposed to know which satellite is controlling all them blokes?"
"Leave that to me!" Everyone turned around and gasped when Pitch suddenly walked in. "I know exactly which one they are using."
"Pitch?" Hiccup gasped getting up from his chair and drawing his fire sword. "You got a lot of nerve showing your face around here traitor."
"Calm your nerves viking boy he's with me." Puss suddenly walked in and stepped in between Pitch and Hiccup.
"Viking boy?" Hiccup asked confused.
"Puss what it going on here?" Branch asked "Why is that traitor and Raptor agent here?"
"Because he is no longer a Raptor." Smidge suddenly walked in as well. "He came to me about nine years ago for help. Saying that Creek had turned his back on him and taken control of the whole organization. He wanted revenge on Creek and knew I was hunting him down as well. I took pity on him and offered to help."
"And how do you know he isn't just playing you?"
"I'm dying Branch," Pitch replied "When Creek killed Chef the sorcery she used to keep me alive started to were off, I have been slowly deteriorating for the past nine years. I want to make everything right before I die, including with you."
"After everything you have done, why should I believe a word you are saying?"
"Because he saved my life!" Puss shot out, "Along with Coopers and Rosiepuff. He could of left us to die but instead single handily got all three of us to Gobber's to get patched up and rebuilt."
"It's true," Gobber suddenly walked in. "I can vouch for that."
"I know Pitch has done some horrible things Branch, but so have I, and so did you after you thought Poppy and Scarlett was dead. You of all of us have no right to judge others. Pitch knows everything the Raptors are up to, he knows how they are controlling our friends, and dammit I am going to put aside my past feelings and work with him if it means ending this war. The only question now is, are you going to put aside yours too, or are we going to do this without you?"
"The Raptors have Harper, I am willing to work with this man regardless of his past deeds," Cooper replied.
"Me too," Suki stepped up, joining Puss by his side. "For Lena,"
"I am a past Raptor myself," Bridget replied "Would be hypocritical of me if I didn't give Pitch a second chance as well."
"If he can help me save Jo, I will give him a chance," Reby replied.
"If you know exactly what satellite Creek is using to control our friends, then you will earn my trust," Poppy replied "But you also must fight by our side."
Pitch pulled out a map of every satellite in space. He then pointed to a giant one in the middle of the map. "That one."
Branch just let out a sigh, "This doesn't excuse or change any of your past deeds. But we are desperate. So I guess your in."
Branch than turned to the rest of the team. "This is it our friends. This is our final stand. We owe this to everyone who is not standing in this room right now. I am willing to do whatever it to bring Creek down.
"Whatever it takes," Poppy repeated.
"Whatever it takes," Suki also repeated.
One by one everyone else also repeated the lines "Whatever it takes," making it their vow, their slogan to do whatever they needed to do to bring the Raptors down.
"Whatever it takes," Branch finished. "We are going to stop this war."
We are close to the end of this story. We have just about reached the climax so I would say we have about three chapters left than we are done. So don't go anywhere.
