Captain's log, Stardate 42477.3. We have arrived at Solais Five with the Rematan diplomat, Riva, and his three interpreters, in the hopes of ending centuries of war.
Soriana looked around at the relatively crowded transporter pad; it was unusual for seven to go down at once. She, along with Yar and Worf, stood opposite Riva's party of four.
"Ready, sir," O'Brien announced. "Full active perimeter, you said?"
"That's right, Chief," Yar confirmed. "These people are almost certainly coming in armed, so make sure we're covered."
"We must not appear as though we expect violence," Riva insisted through Scholar.
"Don't worry," Yar assured him. "These precautions won't disrupt the conference at all, as long as it remains peaceful. Energize."
"Be at ease," Wisdom said, "I commend you both. To come here proves not only your courage, but your wisdom. Please, give this conference a chance."
Scholar added, "I have no magic. You have been fighting all your lives. You know only -"
But a guard from one faction suddently pushed forward. "No, no, never! Death first!" He pulled his weapon, aiming at the delegation…
… and was immediately enveloped in a glowing ray of light from above. Both parties gawked in surprise at the drone that had appeared above their heads, its personal cloak dropped as it activated its stasis beam.
"A little trick we adapted from the Minosians," Yar commented to Riva.
"Traitors! You're all traitors!" Shouted a man from the other faction.
"No! He is the traitor! Let him go, I'll kill him myself!" the leader of the frozen man's group shouted to Tasha. But the Starfleet officers turned to Riva. The parties quieted and did likewise.
"A tragedy, to begin in such a way," Passion said.
"But even such rash actions have reasons behind them," Scholar added.
Wisdom continued, "Please, deactivate this man's weapon, then awaken him. I ask you both to show your opposition to his rash violence by not attacking him in response, but listening to what he has to say."
Passion completed, "His anger may stem from deep wounds, and those wounds may have touched many of you, even if you show the greater courage by not acting on them."
Captain's log, Stardate 42477.5. We depart Solais Five at Riva's insistence. Somehow the negotiator managed to turn the disastrous beginning of an attack into an opportunity for both sides to share their deep pain and anger, and acknowledge the same emotions from the other. He is quite certain that the parties themselves will safeguard him now. While I would love to learn more of his remarkable diplomatic genius, the Enterprise's mission lies elsewhere.
[Author's Note: The events in "The Arsenal of Freedom" gave the Federation access to advanced security technology; there's no reason they shouldn't use it.]
