A/N: I have no idea how I came up with this but I started thinking about how Luke would react to meeting Rory for the first time and I thought Luke been Luke properly wouldn't really care about Lorelai been a teenage mother, and he reacts differently than most people and it drives Lorelai crazy because she doesn't understand why he is so indifferent to it, here you go I hope you enjoy this little one-shot.

The Missing Look

Lorelai practically jumped into the diner as Rory followed behind her clutching a book to her chest.

"Wait until you try the coffee here, it's heavenly," Lorelai told her as they sat at a table.

"I like this place, it's cosy, I wonder what the food is like," Rory asked placing her book on the table.

"I don't know hon, I only came here yesterday for the first time and only had time for coffee, it sure smells good though," Lorelai said as Luke came from behind the counter and grunted in annoyance.

"Your horoscope said you would go away if I give you coffee," he told her recognising her as the annoying woman from yesterday.

"Yes but you haven't given me any yet, come on Duke give me!" Lorelai replied

"It's Luke," the man said tutting in annoyance. Lorelai made a face at Rory but the looked back at him.

"Two cheeseburgers, fries and nine coffees please," Lorelai asked him

"There is only two of you who are the nine for?" Luke asked her

"Me, myself and I, I like coffee" she explained

"I figured," he said writing on his pad "Lorelai wasn't it?" he asked for clarification.

"That is me, Lorelai Gilmore and this is my daughter Lorelai Gilmore but you can call her Rory" Lorelai replied. Lorelai watched him carefully for his reaction.

He looked at Lorelai and glanced at the young girl on the other side and nodded "Hey kid" he nodded in recognition, not seeming to shocked or interested in the very small age difference.

"MY daughter, not my sister or my niece, my daughter," Lorelai said. Luke nodded.

"I heard the first time" Luke replied. She looked deep into his eyes and almost fell from shock.

Been a teenage mum she had dealt with nasty comments and prejudice which didn't bother her anymore but some people were nice about it but they still had 'the look' whenever they met her'. They would shift their eyes awkwardly, looking a little judgmental and pitiful then look back at Lorelai, her parents had had it, Mia, though kind had had it, Sookie at the inn, Michel, Babette when they moved into their new house everyone in the town of stars hollow had done it, and in Hartford, it was a natural reaction she was sure they didn't know they were doing. But this man standing in front of her didn't shift his eyes or look ashamed or judgmental, he barely gave the situation a second glance.

"She's 11 I am 22" Lorelai replied foe emphasis not sure he had added up the numbers.

"You, therefore, had her at sixteen?" Luke asked looking at her questioningly but not judgmental just curious.

"YES," Lorelai shouted. She wanted him to give her the look as it was so normal, she felt odd when someone didn't.

"She has your eyes" was all Luke said before he left to go get their orders. Lorelai's mouth fell open in shock and she turned to Rory.

"Did you see that?!" Lorelai asked her

"See what?" Rory asked

"He acted so...normal...he realises I had you young and he doesn't care" Lorelai replied shockingly.

"Isn't that a good thing?" Rory asked thinking it was about time they met someone non-judgmental.

"No, because he is a human, well at least I think, the look means 'oh I judge you like I am supposed to but I won't discuss it with you, who is that man?" Lorelai asked with a voice full of wonder as she stared at him behind the counter.

"Luke Danes" Rory said looking at the menu and finding that was the name of the owner.

"Stay here," Lorelai said getting up and walking to the counter

"Burgers will be ready in five minutes," Luke said looking at her

"Why don't you care? I was a teen mother, where's the judgmental speech about the invention of protection" Lorelai asked looking at him confused.

"Why would I judge? It's not my life, we all have done stupid things, just because yours you have evidence off doesn't mean the rest of us are innocent" Luke replied with a shrug.

"Yes but ...I was a teenager mother, it's one of the biggest no-no's you can do" Lorelai replied

"My sister was quite young when she had her kid, not as young as you but younger than most" Luke replied "Anyway, you might be taboo for being a teenager mother but your kid is a thousand times less annoying than any of the other kids who come here who have older parents" Luke replied honestly as he saw Rory was just lost to the world reading her book.

"No one has ever not had the look before" Lorelai went on with a small smile.

"Look?" he questioned

"They shift their eyes judgementally, to scared to say anything bad to my face, everyone in my life has given it to me...except you...!" Lorelai said still in shock.

"I know the look, I get it at times because I wear a hat indoors, people think it's rude but won't say it" Luke replied "Your past is your past, I am not going to judge you" Luke reassured her. Lorelai had no idea why but she felt her eyes well up with tears.

"Thanks ...it means a lot to me," Lorelai said. All she wanted was to be accepted and fit somewhere she could call home. Luke winked and smiled before he looked over at their table and groaned.

"Excuse me, Kirk has found his way to Rory, trust me you will thank me later for getting him to leave, KIRK" the man shouted as he went to remove Kirk from bothering the young girl Kirk had been curious about the new resident. Lorelai watched him and smiled, already feeling so safe and free in this little diner in this tiny Connecticut town. In fact, she already felt this place was home, and she could always call it a home if she needed one.
