(Chris' POV, July 28, 16:20)
'So let me get this right, you three have known about me being Kira for months, and you haven't done anything with that knowledge at all?'
'Actually just Tom and I, Alice only found out this afternoon. Oh also Katashi knows but he couldn't show up on such short notice.'
'…Oh. Still, what the hell?! You two were just watching us struggle on our own all this time?! Harry might be alive if you showed up just yesterday instead!'
'Bad timing. My specialty.'
'We could've died you know!'
'Chris, remember what Connor said. For every minute that you are angry, you lose sixty seconds of time you could've spent browsing memes. Or in this context, making a plan to defeat Luci and save Connor and Kallet-'
'I HAVE A RIGHT TO BE ANGRY, LUCI KILLED MY FRIEND IN COLD BLOOD AND IS HOLDING TWO MORE HOSTAGE-'
'I'LL TAKE A POTATO CHIP AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR ASS IF YOU DON'T JUST SHUT UP AND LET US TALK!'
'Okay, okay, fine! So, what's your plan?'
'That's what we all need to work on, together. And I suggest we get started now.'
I'm not sure if Lauren's listening, she's snapping an angry look at Tom and Alice. Finally she asks,
'What exactly were you two doing?'
'For biology club I'm doing a project focusing on the neural networks of small sharks, little baby ones, and Tom and I were going to collect some to bring into the lab at school.'
'That doesn't sound legal. At all.'
'Well, for all you know it may unexpectedly save your ass one day so don't judge.'
(Dimina's POV, July 28, 16:21)
Alicia Summer. I like this one. Anyway, onto what Chris is saying.
'Back on topic, what do we do now? I mean, Connor and Kallet have already been taken, and that leaves me as the last of the three major suspects. It also means we don't have much time… wait, I have an idea. You see, Lauren and I have suspected for a while that there could be a third Kira. Or more accurately, a third human with a Death Note. Back in 2006 in the Kanto region of Japan-'
'Hold up, hold up! 2006 in Kanto, are you sure about that?'
'Yeah, Tom, why?'
'Indy and I also have evidence something happened in Kanto in 2006. You see, an anomaly in the Earth's gravitational field briefly appeared over the area, just like the gravitational anomalies that signaled both Rugo's arrival and Dimina's. Through closer analysis of the data, I also found two smaller events, one in late November of that year and another in late January of 2013.'
'Well the case I know of took place in September, which I assume was between the two anomalies in 2006.'
'Correct. So, looks like we have a lead here. Now, what case are you talking about?'
'A few kids died of unexplained heart attacks, came back to life and then died again in early October under "unsuspicious" circumstances. I explained this back in chapter 8, right Rugo?'
'Yeah, although I don't know of a device that could undo a target's death. I've only heard rumors.'
'It's true.'
'…Dimina?'
'Yeah, it's real, the Death Eraser. It's this little thing that used to exist, basically the idea was that you erase the name of someone who's been killed by a Death Note, and they come back to life.'
'And you never told me because…?'
'Rugo, it wasn't invented back then. And it was only around for a few months, before they were banned about a decade ago.'
'Would "about a decade ago" happen to be in 2006?', Chris asks.
'I dunno, probably.'
'More importantly, why were they banned?'
'The Old Man never told us, I never asked.'
'Okay, anyway, onto this "Kanto Kira" or whatever we're calling him. If there were two small gravitational anomalies since the incident, one in the immediate aftermath and one in… hold up. I've got an idea. So, we know that the world of Death Note is real, in some other world accessible through the Shinigami realm. Now, is it the anime or manga version that's real?'
'Ryuk returned in 2013, so the anime I guess.'
'And Tom, when exactly did the gravitational anomalies in November of 2006 and in 2013 occur?'
'The 27th of November and the 30th of January.'
'That's one day before Light got his Death Note, and two days after he was killed. That timing can't be a coincidence. What if… what if the Kanto Kira in this world gave up ownership of his notebook after the incident with the school kids, allowing his Shinigami to jump into Light's world and return after his death? It's the only way this makes sense to me. Now, Tom, are you sure there haven't been any gravitational anomalies since the one in 2013?'
'Besides when Rugo and Dimina entered this world, yes. So if your theory is right, whichever Shinigami you're referring to is still here, along with the Kanto Kira.'
'Now there's just one question left to solidify this theory. Dimina, when was the last time you saw Ryuk?'
'…The day he returned from Light's world, I haven't seen him since.'
'Bingo.'
'Yeah, finding Ryuk and his pet is fine and all, but what about the situation in front of our faces right now?!'
'Lauren, a new member of the team would be a huge advantage, especially with another Death Note and another Shinigami.'
'But we can't just all go to Japan and come back in one night.'
'Well, not yet', Indy clarifies. 'The SR-71's still undergoing upgrades, and it'll be months before it can fly. It's Baryonic Tardyon Reactor hasn't even arrived yet.'
'Wait, wasn't the Blackbird Katashi's project?'
'It's his project which he's making for you guys. Seriously, Chris, did you really think he just wanted to give himself a 43-million-dollar aircraft to play with?'
'Uhh, yeah, that's what I assumed. So, you say it'll be months before it can fly?'
'Yeah. In the meantime, someone needs to keep an eye on it while it's being modified.'
'So, for all intents and purposes it's useless right now. So, any ideas?'
'We could try what Light and Misa did, but Luci will be expecting that. And if he ever got his hands on a Death Note, he'd never let any of us within ten miles of it.'
'Wait, if Luci is expecting a new Yotsuba Arc, we can use that expectation against him… we can lure him into a trap.'
'Or, since we know where the Task Force is currently headquartered, we could just, y'know, send a nuclear missile their way.'
'That is… that is dumb, ridiculous and a bit cruel. Although it does bring up a good point. The missiles. Without a runway we don't have any way to launch them.'
'Well, no. It's only the drones that need a runway.'
'And we need the drones to launch the missiles.'
'Not exactly. Both of them combined weigh, what, 281 kilograms? And they only need to be launched from eight kilometers at subsonic speed? Dimina can do that.'
'Do you think so?' Lauren asks.
'Actually, it makes sense. The Shinigami realm's portal opens five times as high, plus if she had enough strength to equal the thrust of a reaper drone's engine during the evacuation of the airbase, she can certainly carry them. There's just one problem-'
'I don't want to do it.'
'Okay, two problems. Dimina, this is kind of necessary.'
'And why should I care? It won't put you in any danger if the missiles aren't launched, and I don't really care about any of you humans outside the necessity of keeping Rugo and I in the same world, sooo… yeah. I'm out.'
'Will pizza make you change your mind?'
(Twelve seconds later)
'This is Dimina to Team Kira, just reached the cloud layer. About two clicks left to go.'
'Rodger that.'
'Lauren, how are you doing?'
From deep within the thick wool jumper wrapped around my waist I can hear,
'I'm cold.'
'Forget about her, this is way more serious! If she freezes she freezes.'
'I would never allow that, Alice. And if any of you do anything that results in this girl's death, then the first thing I will do is nothing. But then I won't hesitate to do nothing. You got that?'
'…Fine.'
And now from a more familiar asshole's voice, 'Hold up, you've got incoming. Looks like an F/A-18.'
'Rodger that, one click left to go.'
'This is getting out of hand. Now there are two of them!'
'Dimina, I feel like I can't breathe.'
'We'll be back down soon, don't worry. As an old friend of mine once said, if you're going through hell, keep going. Well, he was more of an acquaintance then a friend, but still.'
'You're at the target altitude, all systems are go for deployment.'
And so without further ado…
YEET!
And again,
YEET!
The two rockets begin to curve downwards for a moment, before a flash of light and warmth bursts from both in unison, accelerating them into the distance. Anyway, no time for sightseeing, I gotta get back down fast.
'Are they still following?'
'Yeah. And these things can go at Mach 1.8, so you can't outrun them.'
'…Oh, I have an idea.'
Adjusting my course, I aim diagonally downwards towards Sydney's harbor, and as the clouds clear I see a large arch-shaped bridge stretching across it.
'They're closing in. Four clicks away right now. They haven't fired missiles so I'm guessing they weren't loaded with any. Makes sense, after all they were sent to intercept you on short notice.'
'Alright, here we are.'
I slow down to a stop below the bridge, grabbing onto one of the rusty steel reinforcements. With the steel on one side and a pylon of granite blocks on the other, I don't think any bystanders can see us.
'I'll be honest, that's really clever. The jets won't want to destroy the bridge while there's hundreds of people on it, and the satellites can't see you either.'
'Just tell me when they're gone.'
'D-Dimina, can we please not do that again? I couldn't even breathe.'
'If we have to do it again, we'll use an airtight version of the Kira suit. Right Chris?'
'Yeah, this was way too close for comfort. Lauren, I'm sorry. I underestimated how close that would be.'
'Whatever.'
(Chris' POV, July 28, 20:08)
'Oh, look at all the pretties!'
'Indy, can you please stop talking about assault rifles the same way you talk about shoes?'
'Oh, lighten up a little. Lauren's fine, why are you still anxious?'
'Maybe you'd understand if you were the one who could get kidnapped like Connor or Kallet.'
'Eh, if I got kidnapped they'd probably just give me back after 20 minutes because I'd annoy the hell out of them. So, here we've got one handgun, one AR-15, two bladed weapons, three suits of full bulletproof armor with those poison-bladed shoes, seven mini-nukes, eight EMP grenades, nine nerve gas grenades, thirty smart bullets and a shitton of standard 5.56x45 ammunition.'
'Plus one Reaper drone and whatever Katashi's going to put on the Kirabird.'
'The Kirabird? Is that what we're calling it now?'
'If you come up with a better idea, let me know. In any case, I honestly thought we'd have more than this, all things added up.'
'Chris, please don't go all pessimistic again right now.'
'Being a pessimist is great. This way I'm always either right or pleasantly surprised.'
*THUMP*
'What was that?'
'Another Happy Landing… So, Lauren, you're back quick.'
Poking her head through the little opening in the ceiling, the Second Kira responds with that beautiful warm smile of hers.
'Yup. So, I'm ready to start recording when you are.'
'Oh, yes, of course. Indy, when I'm back here we'll decide how to distribute the weapons.'
My suit isn't on the bed any more, it must've already been brought up to the attic. Following Tom and Alice I ascend up the ladder.
'So… *cough**cough**splurting cough*'
'Are you okay?'
'Yes, I'm *cough* I'm fine.'
(Lauren's POV, July 28, 20:10)
After setting up the Kira flag in the background, Alice is the first to comment.
'I think she got sick from the cold air.'
'How bad is it? Will she be okay?'
'She'll probably be fine. I'd take a closer look but I don't want to catch her Kira germs.'
While I'm a bit embarrassed, it's comforting that Chris seems concerned about my health. I think it shows a lot about how he thinks of me.
Oh god, my head feels like it's about to burst open. But I can't complain, I gotta look strong in front of everyone. With my helmet now on that's a bit easier.
'So Tom, on a scale of the Flat Earth Society to National Geographic, how much do you know about how cameras work?'
'Enough, I know enough. Recording in 3, 2, 1, go!'
'Hello again. It is I, Kira, and again I am joined here by-'
*COUGH*
'…'
'Sorry.'
'Let's try that again.'
I'm about to be a big disappointment.
'Okay, take 2 in 3, 2, 1, go!'
'Hello-'
*COUGH* *SPLUTTER*
'Seriously, Lauren? We can't let Luci know you're sick yet or he'll be able to connect the dots and find out… just, third time's the charm, okay? Tom, let's go again.'
'Take 3 in 3, 2, 1, go!'
'Hello again. It is I, Kira, and again I am joined here by my ally, the Second Kira. In light of recent events I must confirm my identity with another timetable showing criminal deaths in the recent past and near future, which you will see at the end of this video. The reason I speak to you today is because an innocent life has been taken, and two more gravely threatened, by the villainous detective known as L. The victim was a teenage boy, Harrison, who gave his life in a futile attempt to prevent his friend, Connor, from being kidnapped and locked up. Additionally, a teenage girl going by the name of Kallet was taken shortly afterwards, and while she's presumably alive, her true fate is currently unknown.
How these children got involved in this I do not know, although I have reason to believe that they along with one other are under the suspicion of being the true identity either of myself or my Second Kira. As you can clearly see, this is not true. But what matters now is that Connor Summer and Kallet Vimerica be brought out of custody as soon as possible. Needless to say, killing a teenager in cold blood and kidnapping two more against their will based on a false accusation is highly illegal. I'm not going to threaten to take any non-criminal lives if they are not freed, as that would be immoral and hypocritical. But I do request that they be released immediately, or else I can guarantee that L and his minions have their days numbered.
As for L's superiors, the secret societies and deep states and shadow governments, I'm sorry but I'm sticking to the promise I made back on January 30. Really I should've done this from the beginning, but my foolish belief that they could change, and that they could eventually be forgiven, has proven to be one of my greatest weaknesses-'
*COUGH*
'Are you fucking kidding me?!'
'Take 4 in 3, 2, 1, go!'
(One eternity later)
'Finally, now that wasn't so hard was it?
'Why didn't you just cut my lines out of the script and let Indy or Rugo or someone wear the suit?'
'Because I… didn't think of it?'
'Guys, its half past midnight so y'all better get some sleep. Remember, we all have a busy day tomorrow. Lauren, Tom, Alice, Dimina, I think it's safe for you all to go home for now.'
'Are you sure, Indy?'
'Yeah, in the unlikely event any of you do get attacked by the Kira-case thugs, just remember, the trick of real combat is that everyone is human.'
(Chris' POV, July 29, 00:55)
'Well, that was fun. So, let's talk about our new strategy.'
'I'm trying to sleep, Rugo. It's a bit late to discuss the plan now. All we can do now is hope we've covered everything.'
Four teams, three notes… one shot.
