Kitty upheld her end of the bargain. The end of April came on quickly, flowers blossoming in the front of the house, doing no justice to bring the normal overwhelming happiness she felt at the beginning of spring. Eric and Donna had been fighting constantly, making up by making love.
Her and Steven had been getting into small arguments here and there. Nothing crazy. Her and Laurie had a few disagreements.
It was too damn loud. Her head was spinning with notions of divorce, and her stomach churned knowing that she may not get her white picket-fence after all. Her thought in no uncertain terms, was that it wasn't gonna last. It never could last.
She was destined for broken people.
Hyde had reminded her that tonight was date night, and usually she would get excited, but her outfit consisted of a mere pair of jeans and the Fleetwood Mac shirt he had gotten her. Her old tennis shoes were worn almost to the soles, and her hair settled into a ponytail.
She was too exhausted to do it.
The fighting didn't bother anyone nearly as much as it did her. She understood why. They were all ready for it to be over no matter the cost. But, what would that mean for her adoption? Would she still be theirs?
Her stomach flipped at the thought.
So when she padded down the stairs, no makeup, and saw her father sitting on the made up couch, arguing with Eric, she didn't even bother to say goodbye, just met Steven in the kitchen for a chaste kiss. "I'll go get changed-"
"Can we just leave now?"
Her voice was tiny, and he frowned, nodding anyways. "Yeah, of course." He reassured, swiping his keys back up off the counter. "Let me just go run to the pot."
He was back in minutes, his hand gripping her own to lead her into the Camino that sat at the end of the driveway, warm and inviting, as it always was. Especially for her, as of recently. She hated the fact that she needed an escape. He opened the door for her.
"Edna called today." He told her, and she furrowed her brows. "She knew I was stayin' here, the school found her. She had to sign permission for the Foreman's to take me in. Kinda like a foster family. They wouldn't be able to adopt me, cause I turn eighteen soon." He told her. "Nothin' crazy, just seeing what I was doing."
She nodded. But he was leaving something out. She knew he was. "Anything else?"
Silence. He scratched the scruff on his face, a tell tale sign that he was gonna say something big. He opened his mouth, paused, and shook his head. "Nah, just told me not to get in trouble again." Another nod. Secrets were too high.
He put his hand on her knee. "I'm not goin' anywhere, babe." He reassured. She swallowed thickly, and gave him one of those watery smiles that didn't quite follow through to her eyes. "Yeah, I know." Her voice was quiet.
"I know it's been botherin' you about your folks, but Red and Kitty aren't going any place any time soon either." He rubbed soothing circles. Their sex life had kinda plummeted, due to her rising sadness. She wasn't much in the mood anymore, but Steven really didn't care because he didn't need that right now, he needed his girl. His chick. "You're my chick, and their daughter." He shrugged. Another nod.
"Is something else bothering you?" He asked tentatively, and she shrugged.
"I don't know." She answered truthfully. She didn't. He knew that was the truth based on the tone of her voice, and she looked just about ready to cry. April vacation was coming soon. She had just gotten her license. Everything felt like a fight.
"Everything feels like a fight." She whispered. He pulled into the space atop the cliff, far away from Mount Hump, where nobody went. He helped her out and onto the truck bed, pulling out two bottles of pop, and two burgers. She nestled into him. "Whataya mean?"
"It's not just them. Eric and Donna, have been bickering like it's the end of the world. Laurie's going through it, but she's fighting for that sobriety. Mom and Dad. Bob and Midge. Laurie wants Fez, but Fez is too stupid. Kelso's putting so much effort into Brooke, like more than he ever did with me-"
"Kelso?" He cut her off. "That's not what I meant and you know it." She swallowed thickly. "Just everything around us is crumbling. I don't know, it doesn't feel right. Something's gonna happen." She shrugged. His silence met her, before he asked with a tentative voice. "Do you feel that way about us?"
"Sometimes." She answered after a few moments.
"Oh." He nodded.
"Do you?" He didn't answer, he just shook his head. "Oh." She nodded.
"Why do ya feel like that?" He prodded.
She shrugged. "Look at everyone around us."
"They're all sick, Doll."
"Aren't we?" She asked, sniffling. He rubbed her shoulder. "Like, my parents ditched me, they were awful to me." She blubbered, wiping her face with her hand. "And even now, look at where we live. And you-" She sniffled again, voice cracking. "Your parents absolutely fucked you." She sniffled.
"Why does that have to do with anything? You make me happy." He told her, letting his emotions trickle through.
"Because, Steven." She looked at him. "Nobody taught us how to love. We don't do it right."
"Babe, there is no right way to love." He told her. Inside he was panicking. "You make me happy. Do I make you happy?"
"Yeah." She nodded, sniffling. He swiped the pad of his thumb across her cheek, to wipe away her tears. "I love you." He told her softly, kissing her nose. "I don't know what I'd do if you weren't always followin' me around, nagging me about my clothes, tellin' me how foxy I am." He told her, and she giggled, a genuine smile showing on her face. "There's that smile." He whispered.
"I love you too." She whispered.
It was the first time she had ever said it. The first time he had ever said it to her face. He smiled.
"Why don't we enjoy date night?" She asked. He nodded.
"Anythin' for you, Doll."
But that nagging pit was still there.
