When Hermione got up from her bed on the morning of May 17, she wasn't even close to imagine what would happen that day. After all, it was a simple spring day as many others, absolutely nothing out of ordinary; except that the next day many students would leave for Easter holidays.
Everyone prepared to go down for breakfast; they were in no hurry, there was all the time that day. They anxiously ate something from the tables in the great hall; then heads said goodbye to the others, receiving a lot of 'good lucks' from those who were aware. Then they headed towards the hidden room, hoping with all their heart that everything was going to be fine.
They entered the room silently, but when they got in they saw the hope ring in the glass box, shining like the sun, throwing sparks from the philosopher's stone on it. It was almost too late, the ring was starting to explode.
"It's time to go." Hermione said with the sparks in her eyes, her face concentrated and anxious.
"We have to find it now." Harry warned. The others nodded imperceptibly, and turned to get the keys. Harry took the ring of hope and gave the truth one to Hermione, because he wanted to take the risk himself and don't give the ring to someone else.
They were going back to the main room, but a cold hand grabbed Hermione's one making her torn and turn around while the other kept going. "What, Draco?" she asked gently. "I... I think I'm afraid…" he mumbled. "Afreid?" Hermione repeated incredulous. "Not for me…" "oh…" she let out a breath once she got to what he ment. "Don't worry, is going to be alright. I promise. Nothing is gonna happen to me." She said taking her hand to the side of his face. "Now let me go." she added with a quick look at his hand still grasping her arm. "We have to find the ring."
One last time the great doors took shape in front of them, but they wasted no time watching them as the first time. As soon as they could do it, they opened the doors and took their first steps in the corridor; but the door was already closing causing winds that had great attraction towards the outside, again in the room.
"Blast it!" Ron interrupted walking to go back.
"Ron, stop! What happened?" Harry asked stopping Ron before he could get out.
"The key slipped from my hand, and now is out!" he shouted gesturing at the end of the stone corridor, where there was only one wall.
"There is no time to go back now!" Morgan said, removing any fragment of hope Ron had to get back the key.
"But Megan, or anyone could get here!" Ron tried to explain.
"In any case there is no time! The ring could explode at any moment!" Harry yelled trying to make Ron desist; even if he a little part of him knew that what his friend just said was true.
"Okay, let's go." Ron said, freeing himself from Harry's grasp on his arm. They started running until they got to the central hall.
"Where do we go now?" Luna asked. Hermione looked around reading the indications at the entrances of the gallery until she found the one from the twentieth century excluding the second wizarding war. "Over here." she informed starting to run again in the chosen gallery.
She ran for a bit and suddenly stopped to watch the scene she was searching for. Harry could recognize Dumbledore's memory in the window on the wall. There was little Tom Riddle who spoke wary and cautiously to the much younger Albus Dumbledore, until he agreed to come to Hogwarts.
The students quickly gathered around the window to see better what was happening.
Then they saw Dumbledore collecting the things of young Tom from the principal's in the orphanage; he took a small box with an abandoned look like the whole orphanage, which contained the only possessions that Tom owned. There were just a few things, of little value and importance; except for a priceless silver circle.
For a second, everyone who watched the scene was out of breath. They had found it, but there was still something that disturbed Hermione.
"Well, now we know Dumbledore took it; but where did he put it after?" Harry considered.
"Yeah, where are we going now?!" asked Ron. A buzz of questions enveloped everyone present, but Hermione didn't hear.
"Stop, give me a second!" She silenced them, returning to reflect.
Dumbledore was turning the ring over in his hands, observing every little detail; and so did Hermione: she took between her fingers the ring that Draco had given her for Christmas, and began to compare them, surprising herself more and more. Every time Dumbledore turned the ring, it was more similar to the ring that Hermione held in her hands. The same snakes intertwined along the perimeter, the same dragon wings covered them in pieces, and the same diamond sparkled in the centre.
"oh my God!" Hermione exclaimed in a whisper.
"What?" Harry asked.
"It's the same ring! The Dragonlear's ring has been with us since Christmas and we didn't know it!" Hermione shouted in relief. A second after, she stopped breathing, her eyes widening: she had said too much.
"Harry, now!" she yelled.
Harry blocked Ron, and Morgan tied him with magic.
"What the...?! Ron mumbled astonished.
"So Ron, anything to tell us?" Hermione asked suspitiully sending quick looks at Draco to say him it was time to get started with the plan.
"What are you doing! I'm Ron! Your best friend!" he exclaimed.
"Wrong, and wrong again."
"Yeah, guys it's me! You have to believe me!"
"Shut it! Let's see if you are lying... Megan." Draco said taking from his pocket a little bottle of a dark green potion. Veritaserum. The Veritaserum Draco and Hermione made in potion at the beginning of the year, the best of the class.
"How did you-"
"how did we know?" complited Harry. "Oh, a mix of strange coincidences... and then you accidentally lost the key out of here. You said 'blast it.' come on, the real Ron would never said like that, he would have said 'Bloody hell'." Harry chuckled a bit at the idea.
Draco used the potion on the redhead; and then Hermione with an elaborate movement of her wand elude the effects of polyjuice potion.
"So, who really are you?" Morgan asked aggressively while the figure in front of them standing against the wall was trembling furiously and transforming back in who really was. But he wasn't who they expected.
"Professor Anemonaeris?!" They exclaimed when the understood who was.
A black-haired witch stood in front of them her purple eyes staring at them sending draggers.
"Well well, you caught me." She commented with a satanic, crazy look in her purple eyes.
They were astonished; who was that crazy, disturbing, witch? She didn't look anymore like their friendly professor. It was all a lie.
"What are you doing here? We thought the spy was Megan!" Harry said.
"Because Megan is the spy; I am Megan; I am the spy." it took them a moment to understand and accept what she just revealed.
"But why?! What made you end up like this?!" Luna asked.
"revenge." She replayed with a diabolic smile.
"revenge?! why should you, auror, professor at Hogwarts, look for revenge. For what?" Hermione started interrogating.
"Not What... but Who." Her student's looked confused at her not understanding.
"Tell us everything." Draco commanded for them all.
"At the battle I lost my husband. And I want revenge."
"He was in light or in dark side?" Hermione asked.
"Dark." "So why? You were fighting in light."
"I didn't know he was a death eater before. When I saw him at the battle, my world break down. But he couldn't explain anything, he was already dead... I- I loved him."
At this point Luna and Hermione's eyes got a little sweeter, but Morgan's no. "I don't care about your romantic tragedy. Tell us why the heck you were you spying on us!" she snapped.
"I wanted revenge on you, so I decided to start working for the death eaters. But they know me as Megan, because I wanted revenge also on them... on everyone." They looked at her not capable of recognizing their teacher in that crazy woman in front of them.
"What were you up to?" Hermione asked.
"I wanted the rings; deceiving the death eaters that I would have gave them to them. I only needed their strength, I wouldn't make it alone."
"What you needed to do? For what you needed their strenght."
"From the death eaters... you'll see in a few time..." she was a strong witch, even under veritaserum she could leave mystery. They gestured her to go on.
"I would never gave them the rings."
"So you're on our side?" asked Luna hopefully. The witch laughed a disturbing laugh.
"No... I would use them to get what I wanted, and then I would get revenge on the world. To get the rings, ad from the rings, their power. To get to the ministry, to get to the power." She explained still smirking madly.
They were absolutely confused by what was happening. Is she Megan? No she isn't. Is she on their side? No she isn't. Is she on our side? No she isn't. Who was she then?!
"How did you do this? How did you get to transform yourself in Ron."
"Oh, right right, you want to know everything. At the beginning of the year, during the potion lesson in pairs, I took Ron's hairs, and then I waited, and I got all the information I needed." She said with a melancholic smile.
"They will come now... I've told you everything. The show must go on. There nothing left for me here." They didn't noticed, but while she was taking to them, she managed to free her arm and take her wand.
But she didn't try to escape, she slowly pointed it to herself. The witch greeted them with a smirk and a quick military salute with the free hand.
"Wait, no!" Hermione tried to stop her, but it was too late. A green flash filled the gallery, and Aida Anemonaeris was dead.
They gasped surprised for what had just happened, but then come to their senses and tried to focus again on what they were doing.
"I suppose we can go now. We have found them..." Hermione sighted still a bit shaken up after at list five minutes.
