In his mind, he had the upper hand. Surely, precision and reason would always be the winning argument. Though, in Mary's mind, she had to question whether he was being reasonable.
Firstly, nobody in their right mind would try and dismiss her. She was exemplary on all accounts. Second, she had yet to help him find actual reason.
Mr Banks did not seem to hear himself as he spouted stuff and nonsense. Ranting about order and raving about respectable persons. Well, Mary Poppins was nothing but orderly and respectable.
There was hardly time to dispute his claims; he was a man that wanted to feel in control. And Jane and Michael were waiting for her to put them to bed. So, she did as she did best.
By the time she had finished, he thought it was all his idea. She smiled thinly, saying goodnight, feigning innocence and ignorance. And he believed it. As they so often did.
If she was right, and she always was, she would be leaving Number Seventeen, Cherry Tree Lane very soon. Her bags were already packed.
