Commotion
Mary was always curious. Whether she acted on that impulse was another matter, but she felt, today, she would see where it took her.
Mrs Banks had asked her to come, saying it was for any woman. Mary had said she did not involve herself in politics. Not that she didn't have an opinion, but the ebb and flow of mortal life was one that she found too messy to be a part of. She was content to be a mere breath of air that flowed through someone's life before returning upwards, to the clouds and the sky.
Even so, Mary passed Parliament that day, curious to see whether the Suffragettes had been successful. Yet, as she came closer, she could discern that it had not.
There was a multitude of booing, followed by a growing collection of shouts. Striding around the corner, she could see policemen edging closer, some on horses, others on foot. All with batons.
How unseemly, she thought. To strike a woman for raising her voice.
Before she could find Mrs Banks in the crowd, there was an eruption of noise. Some shouting, some screaming. Women were scrambling to escape, while some were trying to club a policeman around the head as he tried to reach one of them with his baton.
Now, Mary was not one to get involved in politics, but the wind was certainly strong enough to blow some policemen backwards. Long enough for a group of women to scramble away. One woman passed her, followed by a constable. His hand reached out, as if he were to reach for the lady's skirts, and he found that he fell face first into the cobbles.
"Excuse me, you should watch where you're going!" Mary snapped at the flushed constable. "You could have caused an injury."
It was no matter that she had stuck her foot out on purpose. Lessons must be taught, and that was not limited to children.
Thank you to everyone who has continued to read and support my story, despite my long absence; you're all so lovely and it means a lot. I'm glad you're all still around because we all need that MP fix :') hope you're all currently safe and well in our current climate.
I'm still expected to finish my course, which isn't great. But if they do cancel my exams, I should have a bit more time so look out, I might be posting more frequently. So, I'll let you know if I do. Hope you're all having a wonderful day!
