Really short, really silly fic. Don't think about it . . . just enjoy.
Raucous music and laughter from one of the larger briefing rooms drew Rex's attention. He'd been on his way to the mess to get something to eat, but he couldn't pass up such a happy sound.
The 501st had just returned from a desperate three week long campaign, and the men had been immediately assigned to assist the 212th with another battle. They were in transit for another couple of days, but Rex feared it wouldn't be enough time for his men to recoup.
The captain followed the noise and let himself into the briefing room. Someone had suspended a silver mirrored ball from the ceiling, and it cast rainbows throughout the room as it spun lazily. Colored lights were flashing from stands set up in the corners of the room. A stage had been set up to one side and Hardcase was standing there . . . singing—well, bellowing—almost on tune with the music that was playing.
Where'd you wanna go?
How much you wanna risk?
I'm not lookin' for somebody
With some superhuman gifts
Some superhero
Some fairy-tale bliss
Rex had never heard music like it before; it was catchy and upbeat and several of the men in the room were dancing. Not that Rex'd ever listened to much music during his short life. The Kaminoans hadn't encouraged it—though sometimes a vod with a sliced datapad could get music on Kamino—and when he'd come to the 501st he'd just never had the time. He wondered if this was some new genre that was popular with the troops.
To one side of the stage Hardcase was owning, an archaic viewing device stood and displayed what appeared to be the lyrics to the song. That explained why the heavy gunner wasn't always in synch with the tune. He didn't actually know the song; he was reading it off the viewer. He seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself though.
Jesse danced up to Rex's side, grinning like a maniac. "Did you set this up, sir?"
Rex's eyebrows rose toward his hairline. "Me? Surely you know me better than that, Jes."
Jesse laughed. "I do, but I thought I'd ask anyway. None of the vode I've asked seem to know. You think General Skywalker is behind it?"
"I doubt it."
A new song started and Tup took the stage.
When you think all is forsaken
Listen to me now
You need never feel broken again
Sometimes darkness can show you the light
"Whoever did it, Force bless 'em," Jesse said fervently. "You should try some of the food. Weirdest stuff I've ever seen, but it tastes incredible."
Intrigued, Rex followed Jesse to a long table piled with strange offerings. Shiny bags in different colors revealed little crispy triangle wafers. Rex picked one out of a bag labeled 'Cool Ranch'—whatever the kriff that was—and popped it into his mouth. Intriguing flavors burst across his tongue. He smiled.
"If you like that one, sir, you ought to try the Spicy Nacho."
Rex did, and immediately wanted to snatch the bag and hide it in his quarters. If he ate one of the wafers a day, he was pretty sure he could make it last a month or more. But he refrained. All the men should get a chance to try these crunchy little wafers.
A new song started and Fives, Echo, Hevy, Droidbait, and Cutup took the stage.
I was broken from a young age
Taking my sulking to the masses
Writing my poems for the few
That look at me, took to me, shook to me, feeling me
Singing from heartache from the pain
Taking my message from the veins
Speaking my lesson from the brain
Seeing the beauty through the...
Pain!
"You say none of the vode know who set this up?" Rex asked his second-in-command.
Jesse nodded.
"We'd better make sure to save something for the medics and those in the medbay," Rex said. "We'll never hear the end of it otherwise."
"Oh, don't worry about that," a voice said. It was strangely high for a vod, and had more than a hint of Coruscant in the rounded vowels. "I made sure to deliver a bunch of nibbles to the medbay too. And some for the Admiral, General, Commander, and command staff. Just the nibbles though, not a karaoke machine. They'll have to come down here for that."
Rex and Jesse stared at the trooper. He seemed to be the only one still wearing his bucket and was gyrating to the music.
"Thank you for your consideration, vod," Rex said.
The trooper stopped dancing and snapped a smart salute. "Just doin' my duty, sir." He grabbed a triangular slice of something, plopped it on a disposable plate and held it out to Rex. "You ought to try the pizza. Or the kung pao. I know the chef personally, and he made it extra spicy. The Doctor recommended a bit of fun for the men before they jump into battle again."
Rex gave him a quizzical look. "Which doctor? Kix? Coric?"
It could have been one of the other company medics he was less familiar with. But it was an incredibly odd recommendation for one of his medics to give. He looked sideways at the vod.
The trooper shook his head. "Actually, I recommended the fun. Hello, I'm the Doctor."
He stuck his hand out, and Rex gripped it. He was getting the feeling that this man wasn't a vod at all. His armor was completely white. They'd had a batch of shinies join them before this last battle, but that had been three weeks ago. This man's armor didn't have any signs of battle on it.
"Which company are you with?" the captain asked.
The trooper shrugged. "Oh, I pretty much keep my own company nowadays. Just lost some friends recently and I'm still . . . you know . . . grieving."
The captain nodded.
"But enough of that. Is that your second up on stage?"
Rex turned, and indeed Jesse had taken the stage with his back to the crowd. Synth music with a driving beat filled the air. Jesse spun dramatically and began singing.
I'm a winner
I'm a fighter
Here to stay
And you're gonna remember my name
No nothing can stand in my way
This what I live for
This is my game
The vode all began whistling and cheering. Rex grinned. However this impromptu party had started, it was good to see his men relaxing and enjoying themselves. He turned back to the man he'd been speaking with, only to find he'd disappeared. The captain was pretty sure he wouldn't be seeing him again. He saluted the air with his 'pizza'.
"Thank you, whoever you are."
The Doctor closed the TARDIS door behind him and pulled off his helmet, swiping his hair out of his eyes. He walked to the console and pulled up a list of GAR units.
"212th, check. Coruscant Guard, check. 501st, double check."
He grinned. The men of the 501st definitely knew how to party.
"Looks like the Wolfpack is next. Hopefully good 'ol Plo can get the boys dancing. Wolffe really needs to loosen up."
A chime sounded from the console indicating a priority alert had just been sent. The Doctor frowned as he read it. The 21st Nova Corps had just been redeployed.
"Marines take priority," the Doctor said to himself, setting the coordinates and throwing the lever to set the TARDIS on her way. "I wonder if I could convince Bacara and his men to come away for a quick jaunt." He smiled ruefully. "Probably not. That vod needs to loosen up more than Wolffe and Fox put together."
The Doctor flipped on the Chainsmokers and Coldplay's Something Just Like This and started dancing around the console room.
"Hold onto your buckets, vode. The party TARDIS is on the way!"
Sort of set in the Soft Wars AU by Project0506. Check it out on AO3.
I had this idea a while back and had to share because I can't not send the Doctor into cause (happy) mayhem.
I'm pretty sure Cody would have made the Doctor an honorary vod.
Songs used in this fic:
Something Just Like This by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay (Hardcase would own any song he bellowed . . . er, sang)
The Light by Disturbed (maybe not Tup's kind of song, but I was fishing for a vod)
Believer by Imagine Dragons (Can't you just see Domino Squad rocking this song?)
The One to Survive by Hidden Citizens (Jesse would totally own this)
