A/N: I started writing this in September but I didn't really know where I wanted to go with it so I abandoned it. I rediscovered it and thought I would attempt to complete it, so here we are. This is based off the song The Weight by Amber Run; one of my favourite bands and songs. There are also a few nods to some of their other songs too. I cannot believe Station 19 is coming back in a week; it's going to be interesting to see where they take Surrera with everything that happened in the finale. As always, let me know your thoughts on this one-shot. I love reading them.
"I wake up early
To watch you as you wake
Open your eyes
To the sound of the rain"
- The Weight – Amber Run
Seattle was known for its weather; rain was a weekly occurrence in the city, regardless of the season. Robert had lived in Seattle for many years but the few years that he was living in Montana made him forget how much it rained. He was never annoyed by the rain; it was quite the contrary, the rain calmed him.
A storm had blown in overnight leaving heavy rainclouds over the city. By 5am the heavens opened waking Robert in the process. He was a very light sleeper; being a firefighter for many years had taught him how to manage life on little sleep. He didn't mind though, sleep only brought on his loud snore that he knew could just about wake anyone up.
Robert laid in bed listening to each raindrop tapping against the glass of the window, mulling over his life. For as long as he could remember, he served his country; through the marines and firefighting. But now that was all change. Since admitting to drug theft and overdosing on the job, Robert had been removed from his position as Battalion Chief pending further investigation. Although he missed work terribly, it couldn't have come at a better time as he was recovering from his operation. Doctor Amelia Shepherd had put him on an eight-week recovery schedule which meant that he could only do light activities until her say-so. He knew it was going to be a painful recovery as he didn't want to become dependent on drugs but physical therapy and NA meetings were always on hand for him.
Robert noticed how the lighting of the room had changed so he slowly crawled out of bed, being mindful of his leg, and walked to the window to pullback the curtains. The rain had eased off slightly and the sun had begun to rise above the city's skyline. He'd never really appreciated the early morning sunrise before, mainly because he was either on call or sleeping before his next 24-hour shift. However, since being off work, watching the sunrise was one of his favourite things to do. There was just something fascinating about watching the sky turn from a deep purple to different shades of pink and orange, finally reaching the perfect blue haze.
After staring out the window for a couple of minutes, Robert turned around to head back to bed as his leg had started to ache. But once he turned around, he found himself unable to move. The glow of the sunlight had perfectly framed his wife, Andy, who was fast asleep in the bed. She looked peaceful which was welcomed by Robert. She had gone through a rough year; from losing her childhood best friend, to losing her father and then discovering that her dead mother was still alive was the icing on the cake. Andy had been under so much stress that Maya had benched her until she was fit enough to return. Robert had managed to convince Andy to ring up Doctor Diane Lewis to see if she was able to help come to terms with the stress that she was under. Their first session had been vastly different from the one they had at the Station. Back then, the couple's love was a secret, which it made it as electrifying as it could be. Now, everyone knew and some of their colleagues had been getting under Andy's skin about whether it was the right decision, considering the heightened emotions that they were leading up to their wedding. It only distilled more fear into Andy's mind so it was welcomed that Andy and Robert attend marriage counselling. So, they did. There had only been a couple of sessions but they were making progress with their relationship. They had begun to open more about their thoughts and feelings, no matter how insignificant they were. Rushing into marriage wasn't the best idea but they wanted to make it work; they wanted to work as one rather than pushing one another away.
Robert made his way back to bed and cuddled up to Andy, wanting to feel her warmth. He studied every inch of her face, taking in her fine lines that adorned her face. She was simply beautiful in every way possible.
Robert had been so caught up in admiring her beauty, that he didn't see her eyes flicker open.
"Bobby, are you watching me sleep?" She spoke rolling onto her side to face him. Andy then pulled the covers up to under her chin to stop the cold from touching her body.
"Why wouldn't I when my wife looks this beautiful." He replied.
"Because it's weird to watch someone sleep." Andy protested.
"Hm. But I will always watch you sleep." Robert stated. He noticed a piece of hair fall onto Andy's face disrupting her sight so he delicately tucked it back behind her ear. Rather than pulling way, Robert rested his hand on her cheek, caressing it ever so slightly with his thumb. "Go back to sleep, sweetheart. Its only 5:30. We've got a big day ahead of us." Robert softly spoke watching her eyelids become even heavier with every stroke of his thumb.
"Urgh" Andy yelled in disgust, "Do we have to go today? Can't we just stay in bed all day?"
"I wish we could but if we want to make us work, then we do have to attend these sessions."
"I suppose" Andy mumbled, "Thank you for doing this with me. I know this isn't how marriage should go but I don't want to prove Jack or Maya right by divorcing you."
"Whoa, hold up. Andy, I would never divorce you. You have changed me to be a better man and I can't thank you enough for that. I know what it's like to loose a wife and I don't ever want to go down that road again, through death or divorce" He said passionately, looking into Andy's eyes so she truly knew he meant every word, "The weight of your love is all that I need to get through each and every day." He continued before placing a delicate kiss on the top of her head.
"I love you, Robert Sullivan." She whispered as her eyelids closed.
Sleep soon overcame her once more as the movement of Robert's thumb continued on her cheek. He always knew what she needed and when she needed it. Whether it would be comforting words, a kiss or a simple touch somewhere on her body, Robert had the power to make her feel safe no matter what. They were good for each other and there was nothing and no one that would get in the way of the love that they shared.
