This is Armadillo, USA
After a full hour of rest, John stood up from a rock he sat on and go on Bonnie's advice to see the sheriff at Armadillo. Before he does that, he decided to see Bonnie first. So John walk to her house and greeted few of other folks who work for her and walk to Bonnie who just exited her house.
"Ah, Mr. Milton," Bonnie greeted as she and John approached each other. "How are you?"
"Good, Miss MacFarlane," John replied. "How are you?"
"I'm well," She answered. "Would you mind riding with me to Armadillo?" She asked. "I've got to get some supplies and I could do with the company."
"Of course," John agreed.
"You can take the rain," Bonnie told him as she and John walk to the stagecoach that one of the feller offered just now. "It wouldn't do for a terrifying bounty hunter such as yourself to be seen driven around by a woman."
John laughed. This woman has such sense of humor, John thought.
"Take the reins, Mr. Milton." Bonnie told him.
John and Bonnie hopped on the stagecoach with John taking control and stroll towards the exit of Bonnie's ranch and stick to the path leads to Armadillo.
"You're looking much better," Bonnie amused. "Considering you were almost buzzard food a couple of days ago."
"I have you to thank that, Miss." John said.
"So do tell me, have you needlessly risked your life since we last spoke?" Bonnie asked.
"No, miss," John replied. "Have not."
"Well, that's a relief," Bonnie said. "Perhaps there's hope for you yet."
"I wouldn't bet on it,"
"Oh, there's always hope Mr. Milton," Bonnie told him. "You can't be a rancher in this kind of country if you don't believe that.
"An admiral attitude, miss," John described.
"I suppose so. I can't think of any other way to stay sane, to be frank. What about you? Have you ever given up hope altogether?" She asked.
"Hope hasn't really into it," John admitted. "It's not really something I think about."
"A peculiar outlook," Bonnie said. "I can't really say I understand you."
"I can't always say I do either."
"Oh don't be so deliberately enigmatic."
I'm not, miss," John protested.
"Yes you are." Bonnie pointed out. "You are being deliberately obscure as a substitute for having a personality."
"I just know there are two theories to argue with women." John said. "And neither one works."
"I'm not even going to dignify that gibberish with a response," Bonnie told him.
I think I remembered hearing that line before, John thought. I remembered it was Dutch who told hat to Arthur a long time ago.
They continued along the way for two minutes.
"I think it's kind of funny I found dying on the side of the road and now you're driving me into town." Bonnie said.
"You have a strange sense of Humor." John told her.
"Well, you must admit," Bonnie said. "it's an unusual start to a friendship.
"I didn't realize we were friends, Miss MacFarlane?" John asked.
"Oh please," Bonnie replied. "Now who's being funny? Listen, I know that business with Bill Williamson was your business but I don't know….You've been good to us…And….I don't think you're a bad man."
Unless you heard about the Saint Denis robbery, Miss, John thought.
"A little stupid perhaps," Bonnie continued. "but not rotten…. I just worry about you gallivanting around these parts like you're some kind of deranged bounty hunter. Like Pa always says, "don't go waking snakes,"
"I appreciate your concern for us lesser mortals, Miss MacFarlane, I really do." John responded. "And, if there was any other way out, I'd take it, I can assure you of that."
They said nothing for the next minute while riding down the road to Armadillo, until Bonnie speaks.
"Oh and by the way," Bonnie spoke. "You did tell me you had a farm of your own. Beecher's hope, right?"
"Yes," John nodded. "I have a small holding up in Great Plains, near Blackwater."
"And I'm the Queen of England," Bonnie said. "And at what point during your day of hunting down outlaws do you find time to raise chickens?"
"Only been at it," John replied. "4 years by now and I'm much more of a farmer."
"You're telling me!" Bonnie told him. "So, who's looking after this farm of yours right now?"
"Uncle," John answered. "Well, he's not my uncle as far as I know. He's not my actual Uncle. He's pretty much older than the rest of us and he likes to be called, Uncle. Just an old dog who's lazy as a lizard on a hot day. Always use his so called, "Lumbago," as an excuse to not do the work with us. Of course it's obviously a lie."
"Meh… sounds like the perfect person to leave in charge of your entire livelihood," Bonnie said.
"We go way back," John continued, "And I didn't have a choice."
They say no more as they finally come across to Armadillo, New Austin.
John strolled through the town and sees a lot of folks here and visiting here once more gave John nostalgia. It's been a long time since he was here after Arthur and Hosea made a scam here while John was robbing the ferry with the old gang. Now it has been 12 years ever since, John doesn't need to worry about coming back to the places where he was Wanted Dead or Alive without getting gunned down by bounty hunters patrolling the area and getting sniped by sniper shooters who were good at taking out unwelcome guests while out of a plain sight. John came to a stop in front of a bar.
"So, this is Armadillo," Bonnie told him. "Manhattan it is not, but it does okay for us." The two slowly stepped down of the stagecoach. "Most important thing for you right now is getting yourself into Doctor Johnston's office to purchase some medicine," Bonnie pointed to the medical center. "The first one's on me."
"Thank you, miss. I'll pay you back." John said.
"I'm sure you shall," Bonnie replied, "The Doc's a good fellow, he saved your life, so be polite to him." Then she walked to the general store but not before say another thing to John. "Meet me in front of the general store when you're done."
Without talking, John went to Doctor Johnston's office to only purchase some medicine from him but also thanking him for saving his life a few days ago after Bonnie found him. He went to the store and was greeted by a man wearing a gray suit.
"Hey," Doctor Johnston greeted as John came in. "You must be that feller whom that woman found you lying unconscious in front of Bill Williamson's place?"
"Yeah," John replied. "And you must be that doctor who saved my life. And it's Jim Milton by the way, and thanks for saving me."
"Aah, it ain't nothing Mr. Milton," Doctor Johnston replied. "So what can I get you today, Mr. Milton?"
"I'm here to purchase that medicine Bonnie asked for," John answered. "The woman who found me and called you,"
"Aah, yes," He turned and went to his shelf to find the right medicine and then give it to him. "Okay," He says, "That'll be a quarter," John gave him the quarter and Doctor gave him the medicine. "Have a nice day, Mr. Milton! And be careful out there!"
"You ain't had to worry about a thing, Doc," John told him as he walked to the door and left.
John went back to the general store where Bonnie was waiting for him and saw her standing by the store.
"Well," She spoke. "Thanks for driving me. It was nice to be able to enjoy the view for once. And a little company never hurts now again."
"You're more than welcome, miss," John told her. "Least I can do. And thank you for the medicine."
"Why don't you look around Armadillo?" She asked as she climbed back up on the stagecoach. "You can always take a stagecoach back to the ranch later."
"I might just do that," John replied. "Travel safely, miss."
"Try not to get yourself shot," Bonnie told him. "I won't be around to save you this time."
John wave goodbye at her as Bonnie left Armadillo. After she left, John decided he should take a look around Armadillo and couldn't feel any happier that he was back out here after years of being Wanted this place. Especially Blackwater and West Elizabeth, for now, John decided to take a walk around here for the time being and figured out on what he should do next before going back to Bonnie's ranch.
