When we got home, I stood in front of my closet. What do I even wear? I mean, we're just going to the park so that automatically disqualifies all ballgowns and fancy clothes.
It's not an office party so no blouses and skirts.
So, all that leaves are casual options… that makes sense. I mean, it's a park.
I looked through my shirts.
Nope.
Nope.
Doesn't fit right.
Can't be seen in that.
Geez, what am I, 5?
Nope, this is a grandma shirt.
Why do I even have this shirt? I hate it.
I groaned, "God! Who picked these outfits? They're all horrendous!"
"Uhh, I think that would be you, genius."
I rolled my eyes at Mio, "Oh, hush, you got the good fashion sense."
She raised her brow, "You do realize 95% of our closets match?"
I sighed and sank on my bed, "Just go without me. I'll hang out here on my own."
She shook her head, "Oh no, you're not. We said we'd go, we're going."
"Actually!" I corrected, "YOU said we'd go. I didn't actually agree."
Mio rolled her eyes, "Fine, enjoy your alone time with the TV. See you later."
"No!" I yelled as she made her way to the door, "I'll go."
She smiled, "That's what I thought, now, I'll pick out your outfit. You can calm down a little."
I let out a sigh of relief.
She threw a pair of jeans and a shirt on the bed, "There, it's all good, you won't look like a dork and even if you do, it's my fault."
I slid off the bed, "Okay, I'll change."
Mio nodded as she left, "But only your clothes, I like the person you are."
I couldn't but smile and chuckle.
I pulled on the clothes she picked and stood in front of the mirror. Fitted jeans and a V-neck with music notes on it. Not too bad.
"Oh wow! Look at that runway model! Someone call vogue!"
I rolled my eyes, "You know, you can be really obnoxious."
Mio shrugged, "Ehh, but you love having me around so what does it matter?"
I sighed and let down my hair, burgundy falling over my eyes.
I fluffed out my locks, they were wavy and a bit unruly but in an on-purpose way.
Mio smiled from the doorway, "Electro-dork will think you're a cutie patootie!"
I immediately glared at her, "That's it. I'm not going."
She ran and hugged me before I could throw myself on my bed, "No! It was a joke."
I groaned, "I'm literally 2 more jokes away from not going."
Her head shot up, "You mean I got 2 more?!"
I glared.
She nodded, "Got it. Stop now."
She pulled away and walked to the door, "Let's go. We'll stop at the mart for a soda on the way."
I followed her, feeling very uneasy about the situation. I haven't hung out with other people in years. I'm not sure I even know how to do it.
What do you even talk about? Is it my responsibility to keep the conversation going?
"Don't overthink it." Mio nudged me.
I nodded and shook my arms out, "I'm fine. I'm definitely fine. I will be fine. I've got this. I'm going to throw up. I'm fine."
Mio sighed, "You won't throw up."
We got our sodas and Mio got me the largest size, knowing I'm going to suck it down out of nervousness.
We were a block from the park.
I took a deep breath, "Who do you think is going to be there?"
Mio shrugged, "Probably our whole class."
My body shook with nervousness, "Really?"
She nodded, "Yes, but, it's going to be fine, I will be with you the entire time and you don't have to talk to anyone you don't want to. And, hey, Iida will probably be there too. He'll be happy to talk test results with you."
I couldn't help but laugh which put me at ease.
Mio grabbed my arm and pulled me down the road and to the park.
Ochako was there with Midoriya and Iida but no one else yet.
Ochako looked shocked as we walked up, "Oh my gosh, guys, I didn't think you'd actually come, I'm so excited!"
Deku smiled, "Hey, strangers."
Iida bowed, "Ladies."
I tucked myself behind Mio. My heartfelt like it was going to stop out of exhaustion from beating so fast.
Mio looked around, "Are we early?"
Ochako shook her head, "No, everyone else is just lagging."
Iida shook his head, "They should all work on their time management skills."
Mio shrugged, "Maybe they do it to get a rise out of you."
They laughed.
I felt envy brewing in me.
Mio seems to fit in easily. She's so easy going. I'm a shy, quiet, nervous mess and she's comfortable.
I wish I could be more like Mio.
"Maki," I heard Deku call me, "Have you decided what you're going to college for?"
I shook my head, "No-no, I haven't r…really thought about it."
Ochako shrugged, "I was thinking of taking classes in physics. I love learning about gravity."
Deku smiled, "That sounds so awesome!"
I smiled.
Mio shrugged, "I have some ideas but nothing concrete."
I raised my brow, I didn't even know she was thinking about college. We really haven't talked about it.
"Heyo! The party is here!"
That voice made my heart stop.
Denki smiled as he threw his arms around Iida and Deku, "What did we miss?"
Bakugo rolled his eyes, "Probably nothing, this is just some lame hang out."
Kirishima sighed, "Come on, Bakugo, loosen up."
Denki laid his eyes on us, "Aye yo! It's the new girls."
Bakugo rolled his eyes, "You idiot. Didn't you hear in class? They've been in our class for 3 years."
Denki blinked a few times, "I don't remember that."
Bakugo shrugged, "What do you expect with your pea-sized brain?"
I tried not to laugh but I couldn't help it.
Denki laughed with me, making me feel shy again, hiding behind Mio again.
Kirishima shook his head, "So, Mio and…?"
"Maki." Mio said, sidestepping and exposing me.
He nodded, "Mio and Maki, are you guys, like best friends. Every time I saw you guys around the school you're together."
Mio shrugged, "We were born best friends?"
Denki smiled, "So, like soulmates but a friend."
Mio glanced at me, I know that look. Really? This space cadet?
"We're fraternal twins."
Kirishima looked surprised.
Denki shook his head, "Not possible. Twins look the same, you two don't even look related."
We gave each other a look, "That's what fraternal means."
His jaw dropped, "So, you're sisters?"
Bakugo growled in annoyance, "No, idiot, they're cousins."
Denki looked further confused in a cute way.
Kirishima put a hand on his shoulder, "Before coming, did you electrocute yourself… again?"
Denki nodded, "I don't even know how it happened this time."
We all shook our heads.
Classic Denki Kaminari.
Ochako sighed, "Well, I was gonna play some music but Jirou isn't here yet and she has the best playlists."
Mio shrugged, "Maki's is pretty rocking, hook hers up."
I froze. Why?
Ochako held her hand out, "No problem!"
I sighed and handed her my phone, what if they hate my taste of music?
She hooked it up and started playing my playlist. Zenzenzense by Radwimps played first.
Deku bopped with the beat and smile, "Wow! This song is good! I've never heard it before!
Mio nodded, "That's Maki for you!"
"Whoa," Jirou said as she walked up with Asui, "Who finally got some taste around here?"
Denki threw his arm over my shoulders and smiled big, making me blush harder than I thought was possible. I felt like I couldn't breathe.
I could tell he was talking, I could feel his breath on my cheek, but it was all white noise in my ears.
All I can hear is the sound of my heart beating at an accelerated rate.
I took slow breaths, he smells like sunshine after a rainstorm, that clean, earthy air.
My heart melted.
He dropped his arm and followed Kirishima, allowing my heart to slow down.
Mio nudged me, "Hey, you good?"
I relaxed slightly, "I want to go home."
Mio shrugged, "I don't know, I think you're doing pretty good!"
I slouched forward, "I feel my social activity battery decreasing at an exponential rate."
She shrugged, "Well, the battery wasn't very big to begin with so even if it moved like a turtle it would be out quickly."
I nodded, "Exactly, can we go home?"
Mio shook her head, "Nope, we need to stay at least an hour."
My jaw dropped, "You want to see the world burn."
She shrugged as she walked towards the crowd, "Sometimes."
For the next hour, I watched everyone interact. I was so jealous. It seemed easy for everyone to get along. Why isn't it easy for me? Even Mio is having an easy time. She's teasing Iida and Denki, heckling Bakugo, like it's nothing.
I'm so afraid to say the wrong thing, do the wrong thing. And on top of that, Denki is here. I seriously don't want to embarrass myself in front of him.
Ochako smiled at Mio and me, "I'm really glad you guys came out today. You should join us more often!"
Mio nodded, "We should. I had a lot of fun."
They all looked at me waiting for me to agree.
I nodded not wanting to seem off.
I wasn't sure if I actually agreed.
Mio smiled, "Well, we're gonna get going, we'll see you guys later."
They all waved as we turned to walk away.
Mio rubbed my shoulder, "So, how do you feel."
I shook my head, "I need a recharge."
She shrugged, "I can call Denki, I'm sure he'll give you a shock."
I smacked her arm, "Don't you dare."
I felt the heat in my cheeks, my heart started to race as I thought back to how close he was to me.
Geez, why did Mio put me in that position?
I need a nap.
