We walked to the checkout line and Mio gave Denki a curious look, "So, what were you and Kirishima doing at a bookstore so early?"
Denki smiled, "Oh, we were going to the bakery down the way, there was no parking close by so we parked in the bookstore parking lot. A damsel in distress caught my attention and I just had to come to say hi."
Mio smiled and nudged my arm.
I ignored her, "So, where is Kirishima?"
He shrugged, "I don't know. He went on without me. He's probably at school already."
I felt bad, "If you need to find him you can, I think we've got it from here."
Mio shook her head, "Oh, I'm not carrying your books for you."
Denki let out a cute little chuckle, "It's alright. He won't care, he really just needed a ride to the bakery, his house is too far of a walk."
I felt the blush in my cheeks, "Thanks…"
When it was our turn, Denki set my books on the counter and stepped away so I can pay.
I counted out my money, my saved-up allowance was just enough to cover it all.
Denki grabbed the bags and we waited for Mio to finish her purchase before following Denki out to his car.
He has a nice car, kinda sporty.
He smiled, "What do ya think?"
We shrugged, we're not really car people.
He looked like he could cry, "It's okay, my little GTR, it's okay. They just don't know any better."
I couldn't help but smile.
I couldn't help but be a little proud of myself. I've managed to somewhat keep my cool around him. My heart has been going crazy since the first word he spoke but I'll survive.
Denki threw the bags in his trunk and before I could even reach for the backseat door, Mio threw herself in, locking both backdoors.
I couldn't help but glare at her.
Denki walked back around, "Here! Let me get that for you!" He said as he held the door open for me, "My lady."
Don't pass out.
Don't pass out.
Don't pass out.
He's just being polite. He's always polite. It's nothing more.
I slid into the front seat, fiddling with the skirt of my uniform.
Mio smiled as she leaned forward, "He 'My lady' you."
I shook my head, "He's just polite."
She shrugged, "I don't know."
I brought my finger to my lips, shushing her as Denki got in.
He gave me a big smile, "Onward to school!"
I chewed on my lip, "Are you sure Kirishima doesn't need a ride?"
He nodded, "While you paid, I saw Bakugo pick him up."
I nodded, a bit disappointed, if he still needed a ride, it would've been the perfect excuse to jump in the back seat.
The ride was silent, Mio had her headphones in, I picked at a loose thread on my skirt, and Denki tapped his fingers on his steering wheel along with the music on the radio.
It took everything I had not to watch him steer. His hands move so smoothly on the wheel, he drove with ease. The complete opposite of me. I'm a frantic mess each time I try.
When we finally got to school, I felt like I could breathe, freedom. I can get out of this close space with him.
I jumped out before he could run around and open the door, "Thank you for the ride."
He shrugged, "No problem."
Mio stretched as she got out, "I'm gonna leave my stuff too, if that's cool."
He grinned, "Of course!"
I rocked back and forth, nervously, "Well, I have to go to my locker."
Before either one could say anything, I took off.
I went from being invisible to suddenly getting a ride from the guy I had a crush on from afar for quite a while. What is the world?
I shook my head as I got in my locker, I changed into my indoor shoes and leaned against the locker.
My social battery is running low.
"Hey," I heard his voice, "Your sister said you wanted this book for the day."
I looked at the second book in the series I was reading before taking it, "Uhh, thanks."
He nodded and smiled brightly, "Not a problem. Anything for a pretty lady."
The heat came back into my cheeks and I had to look away. My heart is going to explode. He called me pretty.
I heard him sigh, "I'll see you in class! I gotta go make sure Kirishima made it here alright."
I nodded but couldn't say anything.
The second I heard his footsteps get distant I took off and ran to the bathroom, the butterflies making me nauseous.
I leaned over the sink, trying to calm my nerves.
I looked into the mirror. Pretty?
I ran my fingers through my burgundy copper hair. It's fluffy and thick. I like to have choppy, layered hair. It's almost time to get it cut.
My eyes, baby blue, I know people wish they had this color but I never thought my eyes were pretty.
The bell rang, bringing me from my thoughts. I sighed and shook my head of all thoughts of Denki.
I grabbed my bag and made my way to class.
I was one of the first ones in class so I decided to crack open my book and bury my nose between the pages.
"So, did lover boy find you?"
I rolled my eyes as Mio sat down, "Shut it."
She looked surprised, "Whoa, Maki, I was just joking. I can see he did, you have your book. What's up with you?"
I sighed, "Spending the morning with Denki was more then I anticipated today."
She shrugged, "Do you think I anticipated to ride with Katsuki the other day? No, but I dealt with it."
I sighed, "You're also better at this social stuff than I am."
She nodded, "And the only way to get better is to do it so you get used to it. Enough whining about it and do something."
I was slightly shocked by her bluntness. I looked down at my book.
She sighed, "I'm sorry. That sounded meaner than I intended it to."
I shrugged, "You're right."
"Attention everyone." Iida said, pulling our attention away from the conversation, "Aizawa is going to be late so we are to work on our social studies assignments."
Everyone went back to talking to one another, ignoring what Iida said.
Iida shook his head before returning to his seat.
I sighed and pulled out my textbook and notebook, starting the next chapter.
"I want to start a band!" I heard Denki, loudly.
Mio nudged me, "Listen."
I looked up as Jirou shrugged, "I'd be down, but do you even play an instrument?"
He nodded, "Yeah, I play guitar! I have since I was younger!"
Jirou looked surprised, "Okay, but we'd need more than just me on the keyboard and you on guitar. We at least need a bassist, singer, and drummer."
Kirishima put his arm around Bakugo, "Hey, last time I checked, Katsuki was pretty good with a set of sticks."
He shrugged Kirishima off of him, "I am but no way I'd join some lame garage band."
Denki got an evil smile, "Why? Afraid you'll suck?"
Bakugo glared at him, "Fine, I'll join but only to prove I'm better than each of you."
Denki smiled, "Yes! Now we just need a bassist and a singer. Anyone?"
Mina looked to Tokoyami, "Hey, don't you play bass?"
He nodded, "Yeah, I play both bass and guitar."
Ochako smiled, "You should join."
He shrugged, "I mean, I have nothing better to do."
Denki looked like he could kiss Tokoyami, "Now we just need a singer! Anyone?"
Everyone stayed quiet.
"You should volunteer." Mio whispered, "It'd be a great way to get over the anxiety."
She's right.
But I don't know if I can.
Before any more could be said, Aizawa walked in starting class.
Throughout the class, I heard them whispering about auditions open to our grade to be Denki's lead singer. I thought about going but it made me nervous.
Mio wrote me notes of encouragement. Things like, "You can do it." "You have mom's voice." "It'll be a way to become friends with Denki and everyone else."
She's right.
I don't know if my heart can take spending so much time with him but at the same time, I wouldn't mind.
I heard them talking about having the auditions at lunch because Denki promised to take us home after school.
It was Jirou's responsibility to send out mass messages.
Even Mio and I got one. They're holding them in the schools' music room.
I sighed, looking at the time, lunch is coming up.
"So," Mio leaned toward me, "Are you going to do it?"
I ran my fingers through my hair, "If you come with me?"
She nodded, "Sure, but, remember, I don't sing. I retired my vocal cords."
I felt some relief, "I know. I just need some support."
When lunch finally came around, I made my way to the music room, sipping on my water, "I don't know if I can do this."
Mio put a hand on my shoulder, "You can. I know you can. Just pretend we're back at home, singing with mom. That's when you were at your most comfortable."
I nodded and walked in, sitting at the back of the class.
Quite a few people showed up. There was a line going out the side entrance.
Mio looked impressed, "Wow, I didn't know there were that many people who thought they could sing."
I took a deep breath, "Me either, I guess I shouldn't bother. They'll probably find someone way better."
They started the auditions and I thought I could cry at their song choice. Decode by Paramore. I love this song.
Mio smirked, "See? It's meant to be, they chose a Twilight song for my favorite little Twihard."
I rolled my eyes, "They didn't choose this for me."
But, my heart is fluttering because this gives me a little bit of confidence.
We watched a few of the auditions. I don't want to say my ears might bleed but they might.
I mean, Hayley Williams voice does have some reach some have a hard time getting but this is scary. No one is getting her pitch or even hitting the notes.
Person after person took their turn until the line dwindles down. Denki didn't look hopeful, Tokoyami looked bored, Bakugo looked like he was going to punch someone, and Jirou looked like she could use a nap.
Denki sighed and closed the door, "Alright, the vocal talent at this school is pretty scarce."
Bakugo growled, "This is lame."
Jirou rolled her eyes before looking at Mio and me, "Hey, are you guys here to audition?"
I started to panic and shook my head, "We were just watching."
Mio hit my side with her elbow, "That's not actually true."
Denki motion to the mic, "Come on, both of you should try!"
Mio pushed me forward, "She's got the killer pipes, and Twilight is her favorite movie so guaranteed she knows that song!"
I stumbled by the mic and tried to catch my balance, blushing. Did she really have to announce I'm a Twilight fan?
I stood at the mic and started to fidget.
"Good luck." I heard Tokoyami.
Jirou smiled, "You ready?"
Denki sat down, giving me his full attention, "You got this!"
I felt a smile tug at my lips and I took a deep breath as Jirou started the song.
"How can I decide what's right?
When you're clouding up my mind
I can't win your losing fight
All the time
Nor can I ever own what's mine
When you're always taking sides
But you won't take away my pride
No, not this time
I survived through the first part. It took everything I had to not open my eyes, I knew if I did, I'd make eye contact with someone and lose my nerve.
Not this time
How did we get here?
When I used to know you so well
But how did we get here?
Well, I think I know
The truth is hiding in your eyes
And it's hanging on your tongue
Just boiling in my blood
But you think that I can't see
What kind of man you are
If you're a man at all
Well, I will figure this one out
On my own
I did my best with this song. I've sung it in the shower a million times.
Denki started clapping, "Bravo! Encore! That was amazing."
Jirou looked impressed, "She's definitely the best we've heard all lunch period."
Tokoyami shrugged, "I think it's obvious who our singer should be."
I looked at Mio. She smiled and gave me a thumb up.
I took a deep breath, "Seriously?"
Jirou nodded, "Definitely."
Before I could say anything, the bell rang.
Jirou sighed, "Let's get back to class. We'll talk about rehearsals and all of that later."
I made my way back to Mio, my heart going a mile a minute.
She threw her arm over my shoulders, "You good?"
I sighed, "My battery is low."
She nodded and led me toward class, "Maybe you can sneak some reading in and recharge."
I nodded, I can't believe I made it. I was sure I was going to mess up.
I'm thankful to mom for all of the vocal lessons and training as a kid.
