*Day of the card reading*
Today there is a mandatory viewing of the card reading for the third Quarter Quell. A Quarter Quell is always different from a normal Games. Peeta and I sit in my living room hand in hand as we nervously wait for the reading to start.
Finally the capitol seal shines on our screen. Then President Snow appears and he starts the reading.
"To show that even the most powerful cannot overpower the Capitol the tributes for the Quarter Quell shall be reaped from the existing pool of victors," he reads.
My heart drops and I scream. I am the only female tribute from District 12. I am going back into the arena.
I get up and run. I run out the door and to the fence and I go into the woods. I don't stop until I have reached my lake. My calm and peaceful lake, but there is no calm in me. All I can do is think about going back into the games. Only one of us can come out.
That's when it hit me. Haymitch is also a victor. Even if I have to go back in, Peeta might not have to. I stand up and run. This time I run to Haymitch's house.
I don't even knock. I just walk right in to find Haymitch in his living room with a bottle of liquor.
"Aww sweetheart. You finally came," he says as I approach him.
"Haymitch Peeta can't die," I say as I sit down.
"So, you've come to ask me to die?" he says in a not surprised tone. "You know, Peeta was here hours ago begging me to save your life and you just now show up."
"Haymitch," I say. "Peeta can't die. Please help me!" I say starting to tear up.
"Fine. If his name is called I will volunteer in his place," he says.
"Thank you," I say, trying not to cry.
"But," he says. "If my name is called and he volunteers there is nothing I can do about it."
"Yes you can. You can help him in the arena. Like you did for me."
"Deal," Haymitch says and he gets up and gives me a hug.
I go home knowing that Peeta will hopefully be saved, even if it means me dying. Maybe Peeta won't have to go in. Maybe Haymitch will be the male tribute.
