*reaping day*

I didn't sleep last night. I am just too nervous about today. I know I have to go in but I really hope that Haymitch will be the male tribute.

I am standing in a small roped off pen by myself on the stage and Peeta and Haymitch are in a roped off pen on the other side. Two of us are going into the games. Only one of us can come back.

Effie steps up to the microphone. She is not her cheerful self today. Even she is sad about the Quell.

"Welcome to the 75th annual hunger games and may the odds be ever in your favor," she says trying to hold it together. "As always, ladies first." That last sentence makes her tear up.

She comes over to my side of the stage and reaches into the glass ball that holds only one piece of paper. The piece of paper with my name on it.

Effie walks over to the microphone and opens the piece of paper.

"The female tribute from District 12 is Katniss Everdeen," she says on the break of tears.

I step out of the pen and go over to the podium. Tears start falling down my cheek.

"And now, for the men," Effie says. She walks over to the glass ball near Peeta and Haymitch. That ball holds two pieces. One with Peeta Mellark and one with Haymitch Abernathy.

She messes with the two pieces and finally grabs one. She walked back over to the podium and opened the piece.

"The male tribute from District 12 twelve is…" her voice dropped. "Peeta Mellark."

"I volunteer as tribute," I hear Haymitch say.

Peeta tries to fight it but Haymitch takes his place. There is nothing he can do now. I am relieved that Peeta is safe.

I turn around and a Peacekeeper is standing there. He grabs me and says, "Straight to the train." I can't even say goodbye to my family.
