After the beach, Mio was down for a few days, she got a cold.
Our band practiced almost every night for weeks and we were actually starting to sound legit. We were working really hard. It was hard to get Bakugo to stop stealing the show but he eventually did, reluctantly. And, I even got more comfortable behind the mic. Jiro said at first, I was too stiff and I need to feel the music. The more I sang in front of everyone, the easier it got.
Denki and I studied in my spare time. He was doing well in class and passing his assignments. I'm so proud of him.
We're even studied tonight, after practice, another chapter test is tomorrow and he's nervous about it.
We were in the studio, waiting for Jiro. She's never late but it's been an hour and she's still not here.
Bakugo was getting irritated.
I sighed and sat next to Tokoyami as he wrote, "Doing homework?"
He shook his head, "No, I'm writing."
I raised my brow, "What are you writing?"
He shrugged, "It's just my hobby. I like writing horror and mystery novels."
I lit up, "Novels?"
He nodded, "Yeah, I've been reading them since I was younger and after a while, I started writing."
I got excited, "Do you think I could ever read anything you've written? It's okay if you're not comfortable with it."
He shook his head, "Not at all, I'd be happy to let you read. I'm not saying it's any good but I'd love your opinion."
I smiled as big as Denki, "Oh! I'm so excited!"
He let out a laugh, "Don't get your hopes up, they could be terrible."
I shrugged, "I don't care, I bet you're just being hard on yourself."
"Guys!" Jiro shouted as she walked in, "You're never going to guess where I just came from."
We shrugged.
She sat in the sound chair, "My dad called after school, one of his clients is holding a charity benefit for some school and they wanted a cover band to play. My dad showed her some videos Mio took of us playing and she loved us."
Denki's eyes got wide, "We have a gig?"
She shook her head, "Not exactly. We have to audition for it but she doesn't have many options so we have a good chance."
I felt my heart race, "When is the audition?"
She sighed, "Friday and the event is two weeks after that."
Bakugo hit the symbols, "You losers better not tank it."
Jiro sighed, "We should come up with a name, they're gonna need it."
We each looked around at each other.
Bakugo hit his symbol, "Ground Zero!"
Jiro shook her head.
Denki smiled, "Charge Bolt."
We all shook our heads.
Tokoyami shook his head as he thought, "Hmmm, How about The Interlude?"
Jiro smiled, "Yes! I like it, what do you guys think?"
I smiled, "I love it."
Denki nodded, "Better than my idea."
Bakugo rolled his eyes, "It's fine but mine is better."
Jiro nodded as she stood, "Alright, so it's decided. Come on, let's practice."
We spent the first hour picking our audition song. We went with Try by P!nk, it showed a bit of my vocal range but it wasn't too tough.
We practiced until Bakugo stopped playing.
He stood, "I gotta go."
We raised our brows.
Mio sighed, "It's his bedtime."
He glared at her, "I'm not a child."
She rolled her eyes, "I'm not wrong."
He shook his head and made his way out.
Jiro rolled her eyes and turned off her keyboard, "Well, I guess I'll head home. Tokoyami, need a ride?"
He nodded, "Sure, and Maki, I'll bring you some of my notebooks tomorrow."
I smiled, "Can't wait."
Denki raised his brow, "Why do you need his notebooks?"
I felt the excitement bubble, "Tokoyami's going to let I read some horror novels he's written."
His jaw dropped, "I didn't know he wrote stories."
I shrugged, "Me either."
He sighed, "It's late, is it too late to study?"
I checked the time. It's almost 8, "Maybe, I don't want you to be out too late and get in trouble."
He nodded, "Rain check?"
I nodded, "We can study on lunch."
He grabbed his keys and swirled them around his finger, "Okay, want a ride to school?"
I smiled, "I would really appreciate it. You don't have to."
He shrugged, "No problem, I'll be here in the morning."
I walked him out and watched him drive away.
When I went back in, dad was sitting in his chair, reading the paper, he looked over his glasses at me, "how was practice, my darling?"
I sighed as I sat down, "My band got a gig."
He raised his brows, surprised, "Really? When?"
I shrugged, "Next Friday, it's at the performance center in town."
He nodded, "I see, can I come?"
I tapped my fingers on the arm of the chair, "I would like it, if you would."
He smiled, "My dear child, I will move heaven and earth to be there."
Mio plopped herself down, "Count me in."
I shook my head, "I could've bet on that."
I got up, kissing dads cheek before going to do homework.
I worked for a few minutes but then I heard my phone:
Denki: Hey, I'm home
Me: I'm glad you got there safely ?
Denki: You're my only friend that wants to know I get home safely
Me: It matters to me.
Denki: That makes me happy ?
Me: I'm glad.
Me: Are you excited we got a gig?
Denki: Yes! Oh man it's gonna be soooo cool
Me: You're a Rockstar now lol.
Denki: I need new shades to rock for this
Me: Lol, you're ridiculous.
Denki: You're just jealous I'm so cool
Denki and I exchanged messages for the rest of the night, until I fell asleep, I didn't even text him goodnight.
The next day, Denki gave us a ride and I met up with Tokoyami.
He handed me a few notebooks, "These are some of my earlier ones, they're pretty tame."
My brow went up, "Tame?"
He nodded, "These aren't too scary. I want to ease you into it."
I rolled my eyes, "I can handle it."
He shrugged, holding back a laugh, "Just try these for now."
I smiled, taking them, "I'll get them back to you as soon as I can! I can't wait to crack these open."
He laughed, "I hope you like them."
As the bell rang, we walked to class and I looked through the pages.
Mio shook her head, "You aren't going to have time to read those right now."
I shrugged, "Who knows, maybe Aizawa is feeling really lazy."
Before Mio could respond, Mr. Toshinori walked in, "Hello, class, Aizawa is currently unavailable today so I will be teaching the class."
I sighed, no way he's going to let me read.
We spent the class going over the curriculum Aizawa left.
During lunch I met with Denki in the library, we studied most of the time, when we weren't I was trying not to laugh at his jokes.
I started packing up just before the bell and Denki went to the desk to turn in some books he had.
I sighed and waited for him.
The bell rang and he still hadn't come back.
I leaned to look toward the desk and peaked. He was talking to a girl from a different homeroom. She was laughing and giggling at him. He's flirting.
I looked away, he and I have spent so much time together I forgot he was such a flirt.
I sighed, ignoring the ping of jealousy in my heart. I have no right to be jealous. I'm only his friend and his tutor.
But that doesn't make watching him flirt any easier.
I shook my head and made my way back to class without Denki.
Mio was already in her seat, sipping on her water, "So, for the rest of the class, we have Mic and you know how much he loves to ignore Aizawa's lesson plans."
I nodded.
She raised her brow, "What's up?"
I sighed, "Reality bites."
She nodded, "I'm aware, what happened?"
I shrugged, "I watched Denki flirt with a girl from a different class."
Mio set her bottle down, "I see."
I shook my head, "I know he's a flirt but I hadn't seen him flirt with anyone since we started to hang out."
She continued to nod, "You can't be mad, he doesn't know you have feelings for him. As far as he's concerned, you're a bandmate."
I sighed, "I know, it was just a reality check I wasn't ready for."
She put a hand on my shoulder, "I know."
"Hey," I heard Denki, as he sat next to me, "Where'd you go? Everything okay?"
I shrugged, "I needed something from my locker, sorry I didn't say anything."
He nodded, I can't tell if he believes me.
Before any more could be said, Mic was in front of the class.
He spent the period going on about different shows he's been to which was somewhat interesting but I lost interest and took out one of Tokoyami's notebooks.
Mio nudged me after I was a few pages in, "What are you reading?"
"Tokoyami's story."
"Hmm, I wouldn't mind reading them."
I shrugged, "I'll ask him for you."
"Thanks."
I didn't respond and went back to the pages.
I heard Mio sigh, "Are you okay?"
I shrugged, "Just reading."
She swiped the book out from under me, "Talk to me? Did seeing Denki flirt really get you down this bad?"
I sighed, "No… yes… I don't know."
She grabbed my hand, "You know, if you want him to not flirt around you, you should tell him. Tell him you don't like it, hell, tell him you have feelings."
I looked around, making sure no one heard that, "Please, don't. I'm not going to tell him and ruin whatever type of friendship he and I have."
She nodded, "I see, well, just remember, he doesn't know it hurt you. You shouldn't treat him any differently."
I sighed and laid my head down, "Being social is so complicated."
She nodded, "I know."
After a while, Mic hooked the projector up to YouTube and showed us clips of shows he'd uploaded to his account.
While Mic was distracted, Denki switched seats with Todoroki, sitting in front of Mio and me, "This was all cool at first but now it's lame."
I nodded, "The videos are all grainy and you can't hear anything."
Mio laid her head down, "Wake me up when class is over."
Denki leaned closer to my desk, "Hey, so, are you sure you're okay?"
I nodded, "Yeah, I just had to get something before class, you were in the middle of a conversation, I didn't want to interrupt you."
He shrugged, "Sorry about that when Mei gets to talking about something she made she just doesn't stop."
My interest was piqued, "So, that's what you were talking about?"
He nodded, "She wanted to show me some speaker she rigged to do some light dance thing tonight but I told her no, you and I have plans to study."
I felt the smile on my lips, "That's right."
Denki sighed, "It's nice to have a day off from practice but I can't wait for the audition."
I sighed, "I'm nervous. I haven't had an audition in years."
He shrugged, "You'll be perfect."
I smiled.
The rest of the class went by quickly and Denki drove Mio and me home and we spent a few hours studying. It gave me peace of mind to know he wasn't flirting but I know Mio is right.
I have no right to be mad. Not until he knows how I feel.
