I still couldn't believe it was true. Denki and I are a couple.
I woke up on Saturday morning, a text from him:
Denki: Gooood morning beautiful! ?
Me: Hi
Denki: Finally! The words from an angel grace my phone!
Me: It's been an hour lol
Denki: That's a long time without you ?
Me: What do you have planned for the day?
Denki: Running errands with the pops in a bit then I'm free as a bird for the rest of the day.
Me: I was thinking of asking Jiro if we could get together…
Denki: Why for?
Me: I want to apologize for quitting.
Denki: Do you want to start the band again?!
Me: Yeah, I had a lot of fun.
Denki: ? ゚リチ? That's amazing! I'll text her right now! We can meet up after my errands
Me: Sounds good, thank you!
Denki: Anything for you ?
Me: Have a good day with your dad.
I set my phone down and got up, getting dressed.
I checked my phone again, I had a message from Bakugo, this must be the apology Mio forced out of him:
Bakugo: Sorry.
Wow… so overwhelming. I don't even know what to say. Even he could've come up with something better. Man of few words.
I made my way to the living room where Mio was laying on the couch.
I sighed and sat in dad's chair, "Is Dad out?"
She nodded, "Work."
I kicked up the recliner, "What are you going to do today?"
She shrugged, "I think you're looking at it." She glanced back at me, "What about you?"
"I'm gonna go talk to Jiro and the others about the band."
She seemed surprised, "Want to start the band up again?"
I nodded, "I had so much fun at the charity event and I wouldn't mind doing it again."
She smiled, "You did pretty great, you wouldn't know you're a shy person by that performance."
I felt a sense of pride, "Thank you. Do you want to come with me to see everyone?"
She nodded, "When are we going?"
I checked my phone for messages, "When Denki finishes errands."
"Is he picking us up?"
I shrugged as I read Denki's newest message:
Denki: Change in plans, dad has to go into work, rain check on our day out. Jiro's in the park for a festival her dad is working so she said to meet her there anytime, now good?
"Get ready." I said as I put the recliner down, "Denki had a change in plans."
She groaned as she stood, "Man, I should've said I'd stay home."
I rolled my eyes, "Oh stop."
Me: Now is great.
Denki: Do you need a ride?
Denki: Please say you need a ride ?
Me: Mio and I need a ride.
Denki: I'll be there in five minutes
He was here by the time Mio came out.
I opened the door and saw him leaning against his car, a big smile on his face.
He looked good, his black jeans fit him perfectly, his white shirt hugged him nicely, and his leather jacket, the one he let me borrow, looked way better on him than me.
Mio sighed behind me, "Take a picture, it'll last a lot longer and won't clog our front door. You're letting bugs in."
I rolled my eyes, "There are no bugs."
She pushed me forward, "The entire cast of Bug's Life is now taking up residents in our house and I don't think they're even going to pay rent."
I couldn't help but laugh as we walked down the walkway.
Mio jumped in the car as Denki wrapped his arms around me, "Hello, gorgeous."
I felt a blush and I hid my face in his chest, "Hi."
He kissed the top of my head, "You smell nice."
The blush intensified… he does too, my sunshine.
"Can you two hurry it up?! I'm baking over here!"
Denki rolled his eyes, "I left the AC on."
Mio shrugged, "So? I don't want to sit here forever."
I sighed and slid into the passenger seat, "You're more dramatic than dad."
"How dare you say such a thing?"
Denki raised his brow, "What's wrong with your dad? He's awesome."
I smiled, "I'm glad you think so."
Mio rolled her eyes, "He's just kissing up."
I rolled my eyes.
We pulled up to a park downtown and there were so many booths. My jaw dropped, this is like the festivals mom used to take Mio and me.
Denki pulled open my door, holding my hand as I got out, "This is so cool! I didn't even know this was happening this weekend."
Mio shrugged, "I wonder if the music is any good. Did Jiro say where'd they be?"
Denki nodded, checking his phone, "Yeah, she said at a bench by the popcorn stand."
As we walked through, I had to ignore the impulse to stop and look at all the vendors. There are so many little shops and cute stands, I wanna see them all.
Mio pushed me forward, "Keep it moving."
I sighed, "But, I wanna look."
She shook her head, "No, besides, with your book-buying habit do you even any money?"
I grabbed my wallet from my pocket, opening it.
Mio shook her head, "See, it's empty. It basically coughed dust."
I sighed, "Fine, spoilsport."
Denki chuckled, "You and your books."
I shrugged, "What? I have a problem and there's no shame."
It took a minute but we finally found the others.
Jiro waved as we walked up, "Hey, it's good to see you socializing again."
I shrugged, "I had a rough time but I'm good now."
Tokoyami put a reassuring hand on my shoulder, "Well, I'm glad."
Jiro nodded, "So, what did you want to talk about."
I took a deep breath, "Well, it wasn't right of me to just run out on you guys and leave you hanging and I shouldn't have quit out of thin air. It was unfair to all of you, and, I want to say, sorry."
My eyes narrowed in at Bakugo as I gave them the same apology he gave me.
Jiro's eyes darted between us, "Bakugo, what did you do?"
He glared, "What do you mean? I didn't do anything!"
Tokoyami rolled his eyes, "I'd sooner believe Mineta gave up unsavory websites."
Bakugo growled in anger, "I swear!"
I couldn't help but laugh, "In all sincerity I'm sorry to all of you."
Denki nudged me, "Tell them the best part!"
Mio shrugged, "Which one? You two finally admit you like each other or she wants to be in the band again?"
Every jaw hit the floor.
She looked around, confused, "What? Is there something on my face?"
Denki let out a nervous laugh, "I was talking about the band."
Jiro nodded, "I see, well, that's good timing. Principal Nezu was just bugging me to do the dance next week. Turns out Ms. Kayama was at our performance and she loved us."
I was surprised, I didn't know we knew anyone at the charity event.
Denki smiled, "No way! That's so cool! Another gig?!"
Jiro nodded, shrugging, "Alright, I'll tell Nezu on Monday we'll do it. We can restart rehearsals after school."
I felt relieved, "Sounds good!"
She sighed, "I gotta go help my dad with the soundboards. It's the whole reason I'm here, I'll see you guys later."
Tokoyami bowed, "I have some studying to do so I should get on it. I didn't do as well as I would've liked on the last test. It was great speaking with you again, Maki."
I watched as they walked away, "I was slightly afraid they would say no to starting up the band again."
Denki looked excited, "But, we're back together with a gig! How cool!"
Mio threw her arm over my shoulder, "I'm glad, little one, now, I'm hungry, wanna get food?"
I shook my head, "No, I'm good."
She sighed, "You're on your own then. Bakugo, let's go."
Bakugo glared as she walked away, "What makes you think you can tell me what to do?!"
She shrugged, "Come on."
He grumbled but proceeded to follow her.
I raised my brow, "I swear, those two get weirder and weirder every time I hang out with them."
Denki shrugged, "I think Bakugo has the hots for your sister."
I nodded, "I do too, but don't say anything about it. I learned that the hard way."
He looked confused and slightly concerned, "What do you mean?"
I shrugged, "That's what happened the night of the charity event. I asked him about his feelings for Mio and I got too persistent so he yelled about how obvious my feelings for you were."
It felt weird to openly admit that but I have no reason to hide it. He and I are together, he likes me too. I don't have to be so shy.
Denki blinked a few times, "Wait, I'm the dumbass?"
I couldn't help but laugh, "Who did you think he was talking about?"
He shrugged, "I didn't know but it hurt to think you liked someone else."
I nervously scratched my cheek, looking away from him, "Trust me, I haven't liked anyone else in the three years I've been at UA."
"Wait," He sounded amused, "You've liked ME for three years?"
I couldn't help but groan, "Let's go see if they're starting the music soon." I said, trying to distract him.
He grabbed my arm before I could walk away, "Have you really liked me all this time?"
I sighed and dropped my head, "I don't want to answer that question."
"Why?"
I shrugged, "It's embarrassing."
He stood closer, "Come on," He said, his voice in almost a whisper sending chills down my spine, "You can tell me. You can tell me anything."
I shook my head.
He sighed, "Please, you've already got me in lock and key, you're not gonna scare me away."
I shrugged, "I don't know about that. Our relationship is less than twenty-four hours old… the receipt on it is still fresh."
I heard him take a deep breath, "Fine. I'll drop it but just so you know, if you have liked me all this time, I'm flattered."
He stepped away from me and was quiet for a second.
I had almost thought he had walked away but then he let out a light gasp, "Do they have hamburgers?! No way! We have to get one! I LOVE hamburgers!"
I let out a light laugh, "You can, you saw I don't have any money."
He shook his head, "It's on me!"
I was surprised, "Really?"
He nodded, "Totally, come on."
I followed him over. The food smelled amazing.
Denki was so excited, it was so cute, "I'm so getting a cheeseburger! What about you?"
I looked over their small menu and smiled, "Fries… I want fries!"
He nodded, "You got it, want a burger too?"
I shook my head, "Nope, just potatoes. I love potatoes."
He gave me a big smile, "You're so cute."
Denki ordered our food and carried it to a bench for us, "Oh man! It's been so long since I've had a burger. I wish they served these at school!"
I watched him dig in. He was so excited and I could tell he enjoyed every bite, so much so, he didn't take long to eat it.
I couldn't help but laugh.
He raised his brow, "Whatcha laughing at?"
I chewed on my fry, "You're cute."
He shook his head, "Sorry, sweet cheeks, that's your territory."
I felt the blush on my cheeks. He's a smooth talker.
I shook off the blush and looked around as he threw out his trash.
We are surrounded by couples eating together, hand in hand, playing footsie, flirting. It felt a little awkward.
Denki sat back down, his hand on his stomach, "That monster hit the spot alright!"
I picked through my fries and chewed on my lip, "Can I ask something?"
He nodded, "Anything."
"Are we on a date?"
He shook his head, "No."
I raised my brow confused. I thought this is what dates were.
He plucked a fry from my basket, "Our first date isn't going to be a friend hang out with your sister in the backseat. You'll know when I'm taking you on a date."
I nodded, "Okay, so, when are we going on our first date?"
He shook his head, "Oh, no, that's gonna be a surprise."
I made a questionable face, "I'm not big on surprises."
He raised a brow, "Why?"
I shrugged, "They never go that great."
He reached out and took my hand, "I won't do anything you don't like, I promise. If I ever surprise you, know it comes from a good place."
I felt my heart race. I felt his hand squeeze mine. His hand was mostly soft except for his fingers, I felt the callus from playing guitar. I liked the feeling. I couldn't help but squeeze his hand, he made me feel comfortable.
I sighed, "Okay. I trust you."
He smiled, his eyes lighting up, "I won't betray it! I promise!"
After I finished my fries, we decided to walk along the shops and vendors. There were so many cute things! Jewelry, bags, clothes, and other things.
I sighed, "Why did I spend all of my money on books?!"
Denki let out a laugh, "My poor little bookworm."
I sighed, "Wanna go see the show? The music started."
He nodded, "Sure, I'll meet you over there, I'm gonna grab a soda."
I nodded and walked to the amphitheater.
I noticed some of our classmates. Mirio, he graduated a while ago, he's in college now. He was top of the class and the school womanizer for a bit. He's here with someone.
I saw Momo with Hagakure and Tsu. Not too far I saw Midoryia with Ochako, and Jiro was with her father by the stage.
I'm surprised, I didn't even know this was a thing but my classmates are here.
I saw Mio sitting in the grass with Bakugo, I'm glad they're getting close.
"I forgot to ask if you wanted something to drink so I got us water."
I smiled, "Thank you."
I turned to grab my water and paused when I saw he only had a cup.
He shrugged, "I figured we could share."
I felt the heat in my cheeks. I swear, this boy is going to give me permanently pink cheeks.
I felt his hand on my back, "Lets go sit in the grass and watch."
I nodded and we found a spot in the back. I liked the spot, we could still hear the music but we weren't too close to other people.
The show was great.
I nudged Denki, "Do we look that good on stage?"
He smiled, "We look better. How could we not with such a cute singer? Not to mention the dashing guitar player!"
I smiled, "I can't wait for the show."
I stretched my arms and shiver as the wind got chilly.
Denki raised his brow, "Are you cold?"
I nodded, "Just a bit. I know colder weather is coming, I should start wearing a sweater."
"Here," He said as he shrugged off his leather jacket, "I can't have my Buzzy Beautiful Sunshine Nugget getting cold."
"Buzzy Beautiful Sunshine Nugget?" I asked, confused.
He shrugged with a laugh, "It just feels right."
I felt the warmth, not just from his jacket but from him. He's so sweet, I can't stand it.
We stood when the music was over and decided to go ahead and head home. Mio left sometime before us with Bakugo, no shock.
Denki drove me home, more silent then usual and when we got to the house I didn't want to get out of the car.
He sighed, "Man, that festival was awesome, we should go to more of those."
I nodded, "I love the festivals where you have to dress up in traditional kimonos, my mom used to take us to them all the time growing up. She'd do our hair, get us matching kimono's, and we'd go as a family. It was so fun."
He smiled, "I bet you were so cute."
"I don't know," I shook my head, "I was a dorky-looking kid."
He rolled his ambers eyes, "I don't believe it."
My cheeks hurt from smiling all day, my god, how do people do this?
Denki walked me to the door and I couldn't help but feel sad the day was coming to end. I didn't want it to.
I felt his thumb caress my cheek, "I'll text you as soon as I'm home."
I nodded, "Please."
He leaned forward and my heart started to race. Is he going to kiss me? I felt excited.
I felt his nose graze mine and he pulled away, "Goodbye, beautiful."
I watched him start to walk back to his car.
I hugged his jacket tighter to me as I turned to open the door. I'm glad he didn't want it back.
"Oh, Maki," I heard him, deflating my hope to keep his jacket, "Check the inside pocket."
I raised my brow as I turned back to him, "What?"
He pointed the jacket, "Check the inside pocket, there's something in there for you."
I dug into the deep pocket until my hand touched something velvety soft. I pulled out a little box. I looked at him before I opened it. He got me a gift? When? We were together the whole time.
I shook my head, "But, I didn't get you anything?"
He shrugged, "So, you don't have to. I got this because you seemed to like it. Come on, open it."
I let out a small sigh before I opened it. It was a ring, one I looked at from the festival. A silver ring with the outline of a cloud and lightning bolt in front of the sun. It's beautiful.
My jaw dropped, "Denki." I couldn't say anything else, I ran straight into his arms, hugging him tightly.
He smiled as he wrapped his arms around me, getting as close as he can, "I hope you like it."
I pulled away and let him slide the ring on my middle finger, it fit perfectly, "I love it."
I heard him let out a happy chuckle, "Until next time, my Buzzy Beautiful Sunshine Nugget."
My heart went wild as he turned to walk away.
This guy.
