When the wave hit I knew it was time. Finnick led us all through the jungle and to the lightning tree. Beetee was fascinated by it and continuously talked about it and I had to pretend I knew what he was talking about. When I couldn't stand it anymore I went and sat with Haymitch.
"If this works you know what happens next," he said.
"I know," I answer.
"I am going to do everything I can to get you out of here," he says. This is the first time I have ever seen him tear up.
"Thank you Haymitch," I say and hug him. I know he doesn't want to die. I know it is selfish to want him to die, but he is willing to sacrifice his life for me.
I hear clicking from the wedge nest to us. I don;t know what it is, but it must be the eleven o'clock threat. We have until that clicking stops to get this wire to the beach.
When Beetee is finally done wrapping the wire around the tree he hands the coil to me.
"Finnick and Haymitch will stay here to protect me and the tree," he says. "You girls are taking the coil to the beach. Get it in the water and get into the jungle as quickly as you can. The lightning could hit at any second."
"Can I go with her?" Haymitch asks.
"No I need you here," Beetee replies.
"Johanna is better with weapons," I say. "She could protect you better than Haymitch can."
"No. You guys need to go now. We are losing time," he says.
Johanna and I start walking. The coil is heavy so we take turns holding it.
"You know, I want to get out of here too," Johanah says in a low voice.
"I know. Everyone does," I reply.
"You have a different situation though," she says. "You have a family and a husband. You are also pregnant."
"How is that different?" I ask.
"My family was killed by Snow, Finnick's family doesn't care about him and his girlfriend is crazy, Beetee doesn't have a family and Haymith also has no family," she answers.
"I never knew that," I say softly.
"It's the price you pay," she says. "For wanting to control your own life."
"Come on," she says, now back in her normal mood. "I want to put as much distance between this beach and me as possible. Frying is not the way I want to go."
That's when the wire suddenly snaps and I hear the sound of a cannon. A picture of Chaff shines in the sky. Enobaria then jumps out from behind the rocks behind us and starts to attack.
The finale has begun.
