Introduction [Pueblo of Los Angeles, Nueva España—April 22, 1819]
Don Alejandro de la Vega laments….
The struggles with Alcaldes Ramon and de Soto have taken their toll on the region. Taxes drain the people. Toil exacts its back breaking strain as it has for centuries. Tears and scars burn on faces everywhere.
Hope was all they had. Hope that the Dons were obliged to grant them. Protection that the Don should grant them.
Alas! Hope has been extinguished. Patronage and Protection denounced. The new Alcalde, Gilberto Riscendo, rode into the pueblo. At his side, Lieutenant Hidalgo commanded a dozen of the King's best lancers. He'd heard the King's ministers complain of our situation…and of our bandito, Zorro.
Zorro….ah! How I admired his bravado and skill with the sword and whip. His heart outshone all but the brightest of stars. He was the hope and inspiration to the people. On Toronado's back, he rode to their defense. He always put their needs above his own.
Poor Victoria. She loved him so. She stood at his side through thick and thin. She never ran from a fight. Service drove her to help our neighbors. She ached to be at her hero's side, to let him raise her hand for a kiss and to accept a small token.
They rest now. After what happened, I brought them to be with Mercedes. They can all be together. I cannot linger any longer. Toronado calls to me. He knows that the Alcalde will come looking as well.
I pray there may yet be some hope for us all.
