so i hope you like this. i was listening to the song "in his kiss" by Cher the other day and this just came to me and it got me wondering about the battle between Mike and Jim it is a one shot and i hope you enjoy
Walking up the little path to her apartment Kate turned smiling at Jim. The sun was slowly setting over the water behind them turning the sky a glorious pink red.
"I had a really great time tonight" she smiled as they reached the top of the path. Tucking her hair behind her ear she looked up in to his eyes which were glinting in the low light.
"well, I thought it was time I gave you a proper date" he smiled "one where I wasn't glued to my phone ignoring you or one that didn't involve us having to organise a daring rescue mission when we are unarmed and unprepared" he grinned
"well apart from that little girls kitten tonight" she grinned
"well I could hardly leave poor fluffball up in that tree all night with fireworks going off all the time now could I"
Sighing softly she smiled looking up at him "you rescue kids from hostiles and kittens from trees. Is there anything you don't do" she smiled
"spiders. I detest spiders" he said
"spiders" she repeated trying not to laugh. "the big tough SAS guy is scared of spiders"
"yeah and I would appreciate it if you didn't tell anyone." he said "it isn't good for the image" he grinned
"don't worry your secret is safe with me" she whispered
He sighed heavily looking in to her green eyes. Sneaking his arm around her waist he pulled her close, his lips brushing against hers.
Pulling back slightly she smiled up lost in his green blue eyes. "umm do you want to come in for a coffee or something" she said chewing her bottom lip
"no" he said bluntly looking at his watch
"oh" she said trying not to sound disappointed "don't let me keep you if you have somewhere important to be" she said blinking back the tears that were forming
"it's not that I don't want to" he sighed knowing he could have blown it. "i can't. We are being deployed first thing tomorrow"
"no, I understand" she forced a smile "i guess this is good night the" she said putting the key in the lock turning it.
"Smudge" he said catching her wrist, pulling her in close to him. Kissing her deeper than before.
Staggering back slightly she wrapped her arms around his neck to try and keep her balance.
As he pulled away, she whimpered softly at the loss of contact.
Resting his head against hers he sighed "i have to go" he whispered
Closing her eyes, she could feel his breath warm on her face. "stay safe" she whispered. She could guess where he was heading and she knew her self how hostile It was as they too were going back and forth.
"I'll call you" he smiled giving her one last kiss "for your dreams" he smiled
She watched as he drove off down the road turning the corner disappearing out of sight. Pushing open the door she switched on the light. Kicking off her heals in the hall she walked barefoot through the tiny apartment she didn't feel like a drink anymore not as she was on her own. It felt a bit sad to do that.
Heading in to her room she pulled on her fluffy pyjamas. She had no one that would see her. No one to dress up for so she opted for comfort over being sexy. Besides it was a little chilly in the apartment on her own so she wanted to be warm.
Curling up under the covers she closed her eyes, a smile growing across her face. Just because he wasn't physically next to her doesn't mean he couldn't be in her dreams …..
She awoke early the next morning to her phone buzzing loudly on the side. Sleepily she reached over to the bedside cabinet feeling for where she had placed it the previous evening.
"Kate McGregor" she yawned "yes okay I'll be there in a hour. Yep okay Sir" she said dropping her phone on the bed running her fingers through her hair. A crash sail this was all she needed. To be honest it was probably best at least it would take her mind off of Jim and the way he turned her down the previous evening.
An hour later she walked up the quay stopping at the gangway of Hammersley. She could see Mike on the boat deck talking with Charge.
"Sir" she smiled walking over on to the ship
"X there you are" he smiled "good shore leave?" he asked
"umm not bad" she lied "what is it this time?" she asked ignoring Nav's glances
"SIEVS" he smiled "coast watch have spotted a small fleet just over the line. NAVCOM just want us to check it out make sure they don't try anything" he smiled "notice for sea is 30 minuets" he said as she began walking towards the hatch
"Sir" she called turning to look at him
Sitting in the mess Kate staired in to the bottom of the of her cup. It had been two days and still no word from Jim. She wasn't expecting a call every day but she had hoped to call to say he had arrived okay.
"hey" Nav smiled walking in carrying 2 mugs. "thought you could do with a fresh drink" she said placing a mug in front of her
"thanks" Kate smiled taking the mug.
"so how was shore leave" Nav asked sitting opposite her "really"
"it was good" Kate smiled trying to hide her blushes.
"sooo did you do anything nice"
"just dinner" Kate said
"with Jim" Nav sang
"Yes with Jim" Kate shook her head
"And.." nav probed
"and nothing happened. Not even coffee" Kate sighed
"Kate" Nav said sadly
"its fine he had to leave for Samaru"
"but still. Did you at least get a goodnight kiss" Nav grinned?
"I'm not having this conversation now. I have to go and anyway I don't kiss and tell"
"you know its all in the kiss" Nav called as Kate walked out.
"not listening" Kate called
Three weeks later and Kate still hadn't heard anything from Jim. She was getting worried as she had hoped he would call just to let her know he was alright, after everything that had happened on Samaru in the past.
"maybe he is just busy" Nav said trying to be helpful "i mean the SAS don't go broadcasting what they are doing and when do they. And army boys don't have the time keeping like we do. do they? Hell men in general don't have good time keeping skills." Nav laughed
"true" Kate sighed. "maybe I am just being silly" she said putting her phone back in the draw. "come on then we best get over see what they are all up to"
They were helping on one of the outlying island villages which had accepted the help of the coalition, so they were building a medical clinic and fixing the communication device so they were less cut off.
Walking over the small wooden jetty she smiled watching as 2 kids were running around squirting Spider with some water pistols which resulted in him chasing them around. It was after that the shit hit the fan. The whole area was attacked with a mortar destroying all the work they had done over the past few days and destroying several of the villager's homes.
They were now ordered to evacuate the wounded to one of the other islands. She watched from the water's edge as a jeep drove along the sands and Jim got out. After helping the last of the villagers in to the RHIB she walked up
"there's my Girl Kate" Jim smiled "sorry I didn't call"
"its alright I understand" she smiled they were interrupted by Mike who didn't seem too happy with the SAS being there
They managed to steel a moment together
"when this mess is all over..." he began
"there will be another mess" she said
"true" he let out a laugh, Leaning in he teased her in to a kiss.
Pulling away Kate looked up she could see the crew as well as his men were watching.
"for your dreams" he whispered softy.
"for yours" she smiled back. "we best get back. The RHIB is almost ready to leave" she whispered as he kissed her again.
Walking along the corridor Kate sighed. It would seem everything would get interrupted by the events on Samaru.
"X you got a minuet" Mike poked his head out of his cabin
"Sir" she turned backtracking so she was stood in front of his cabin.
He indicated for her to come in
Stepping in she closed the door behind "is everything alright?" she smiled
"what was that?" he asked
"what was what" she looked puzzled
"earlier back on the island?"
"Sir you're going to need to be a little more specific" she sighed
"what is it you see in him?" Mike asked.
"again, with the specific" she sighed
"Jim. I mean come on you can do better than a action man wanna be"
"why are you still doing this" she said softly "why can't you let me move on and be happy" she moved opening the door
"Kate" he sighed pushing the door shut "i love you"
"what" She turned looking up, stepping back as his lips met hers.
Pulling back she looked up in to his eyes
"Kate" he sighed "I'm..." he began as Kate leaned in returning the kiss deeper than his.
Pulling back she looked up "I..." she stammered making a quick exit,
Sitting in her cabin she could still feel the fizz on her lips, the butterflies in her stomach and the fireworks going off around her mind. She felt confused. How could she feel like this? One had broken her heart and the other was exciting and fun and like a breath of fresh air.
"XO requested on the bridge" Nav's voice echoed across the pipe.
Walking up the steps, she looked around.
"we have reports from coalition headquarters, the SAS team have been ambushed and need extracting. We are the closest asset"
"Sir." she looked
"we don't know the full details X" he said seeing the look of fear in her eyes
Things escalated quickly and both Mike and Jim got badly wounded. Sitting in her cabin they were heading home she closed her eyes.
Unable to sleep she slid from her rack. Walking through the darkened ship she stopped outside his cabin. Resting her hand on the handle she quietly opened the door. Walking in she closed the door behind her.
Sitting in his chair she looked around. Remembering the last time, she was in there with him. She could still feel her lips fizzing from where he kissed her. She felt odd.
Could it be true with what Nav said it was all in a kiss. She didn't know what to feel. Leaning back in the seat, she just wanted get home and see if he was alright even though hearts were going to get broken, she had to listen to hers and when he kissed her it felt right it felt like love
