Chapter One – Crisis

It was simply known as 'The Great War'. The fight between the Freedom Fighters in Knothole and Dr. Ivo Robotnik had raged for eleven years. For as long as Sonic could remember. His entire life, almost. Now with the Doomsday Project, they had won. Well, against Robotnik, he was long gone, but Snively had survived and had his own plans, and his own robot. A robot that proved impossible to beat and in the end, cost Sonic everything.

Two years.

For two years, he battled it. They all did. Snively through everything at them and unlike Robotnik, was not afraid to be extremely ruthless. Snively used the Roboticiser on everyone and everything, no second chances. He even killed. But the Freedom Fighters fought back just as hard.

Stalemate.

Something had to give. It was costing too much.

Betrayal!

They had it all planned. The Freedom Fighters. The day they would defeat Snively. Sonic had been training for months. He knew it would every ounce of strength and speed, and every trick in the book to win.

It was deceptively simple. The Plan. To charge the Headquarters, catch Snively off-guard and take him out one-on-one. Stronger and more powerful then Snively alone, Sonic had got everything in his favour. He just hadn't bet on one thing.

Snively knew he was coming.

It was a trap!

But how?

The plan had been deadly secret for months but Sonic found himself walking into a bloodbath.

Snively's robot proved more then a match for him. Sonic got the impression it had been hand-made by Snively and based on the Blue Blur himself. Even Snively was battle ready with some impressive sword skills. With two against one, no amount of training could have prepared Sonic for the resulting fight.

Blood everywhere.

It was a kill of be killed fight and Sonic was not winning.

Snively delighted himself in broadcasting the entire fight to every television screen in range. The Freedom Fighters watched in horror was their prize champion was loosing the fight.

Sonic found himself cornered. Snively was moving towards him, menacingly, but his robot had sparks flying from it. It was almost down. Snively's nostrils, on his long pointed nose flared, as he leered at Sonic. He was going to win, finally, and with their prize champion gone, he knew that the Freedom Fighters would drop like flies.

Bruised, battered, broken and badly bleeding, Sonic was in a do or die moment. He swore to himself.

'Let's do both!' He thought, and lunged towards Snively. It was the last thing the human expected and the Freedom Fighters watched their beloved friend die before their eyes.

If Sonic was going to die, he was going to take Snively down with him.

He succeeded!

That was six years ago. They had won. But at what cost?

Thousands of people were feared missing, presumed dead and Robotropolis

was left in ruins. Sally Acorn, the last surviving member of the House of Acorn, was left to pick up the pieces.

Six years. Its a long time, and a lot can happen. Not only had they got to rebuild the city but they also had to de-roboticise the survivors. This proved very difficult as the original inventor of the roboticiser, Sir Charles Hedgehog, Sonic's uncle, had simply vanished. He had been a key member of the Freedom Fighters and had be working on a de-roboticiser. But it was left incomplete and they had very hit and miss results with it.

Six years.

Sally Acorn sat on her throne, in her Palace, dressed in her finest attire. A beautiful ground squirrel with large bright blue eyes and long dark red hair, which now flowed over her shoulder and down her front. Gourmet food was on the table, her subjects surrounding her, bringing her gifts. It was her birthday, and yet, she just didn't seem to care. Her husband, Geoffrey St. John, a unpleasant skunk with light blue eyes with white and black hair, was barking orders at everyone. She let him. She had no idea why. She didn't even stop him when he crossed the line, which he did, regularly.

The war against Snively had left the Freedom Fighters in pieces with very few survivors. One of them, was Rotor. A happy-go-lucky Walrus, with short brown fur and long tusks. An inventor by trade, but openly admitted he was never up to Sir Charles's standard. Still incredibly loyal to Sally, he had his workshop inside the Palace and thought Sally behaviour very strange. This lack of care. It was so unlike her. She had gone from an incredible princess to a very cold Queen. He had long believed it be odd every since she had met that skunk, many years ago. How else would he have gotten her to marry him? He had done something to her, but Rotor had no proof. If he started asking questions, he could have potentially put Sally's life in danger, and that was the last thing he wanted.

He consulted with the only other surviver of Knothole in the Palace, Antoine D'Coolette. A coyote with a French accent who was still incredibly clumsy, to Rotor's utter annoyance. Still having difficulties speaking English, (You would have thought he would have learned by now), he still had romantic feelings for Sally, and is so preoccupied with trying to impress her that, in the end, Rotor just gave up in trying to get him on side.

But he had to do something soon. Sally's lack of care over the years had left the people of the city starving. There was a suggestion of a very bad Winter coming within months and Rotor had no idea if anyone would make it. Or would they just leave. Abandoning Mobotropolis (renamed back from Robotropolis) making it a ghost town. Rotor didn't fancy either, and prayed for a miracle.

He got one.

But not in the way he expected.
