Chapter One

Nessie's POV (Eleven Years Earlier)

I lay on my bed, tossing my stuffed animal up and down. It was a wolf. Daddy didn't buy me many things, but when I asked for the stuffed animal, he got me it. He was strange in that he would buy things that had a strange sentimental meaning to him, but not to me. I had always felt drawn to wolves, I wasn't sure why. Being smarter and bigger than the average two-year-old had its perks and its downfalls. There was no childlike bliss to live in, just knowledge and the pain that I knew my father went through every day. Especially today. It was my birthday. I was three, technically. I heard a knock on my door. Surprised, I slid off the bed and opened it. I looked up at Daddy. He stood there, holding something behind his back.

"Hi, Daddy," I said. I leaned to look around him, but he moved so I couldn't see.

"Happy Birthday, Renesmee," he said, and I frowned. He wasn't supposed to celebrate my birthday.

"Did you...get me something, Daddy?" I asked, trying again to peer around him.

"Yes, I did," he said, moving again so I couldn't see.

Finally, he handed me a small box that was even wrapped. "Wow, wrapping paper," I said, tearing it open and taking the lid off the box. Inside, there was a small locket on a gold chain. "Wow, it's beautiful Daddy, thank you," I said, putting it carefully around my neck.

"You're very welcome, but there's something else," he said.

I looked up. "What is it, Daddy?" I asked, eager for two presents even though I hadn't been expecting any. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small picture that would fit inside of the locket. He handed it to me. It was a picture of a beautiful lady with brown hair and eyes.

"Is this...Momma?" I asked, carefully putting it inside of the locket.

He nodded. "I thought you should have it," he said. "I thought you should remember your mother."

I could feel tears on my face. I knew how hard it was for him to think about Momma. "Thank you, Daddy," I said.

"You're welcome, darling," he said, giving me a hug. That was the first night I dreamed of killing my mother.

(The Present)

"Luna! Come on! Are you almost ready to go Grandma and Grandpa's?!" I shouted for the fifth time. Racheal was the good one, I had her herded to the door it under five minutes. Luna had to bring everything with her, for goodness sakes. I shouted into the kitchen; "Jake, go get Luna!" He shouted something in response, and a few seconds later he drug the protesting three-year-old to the door with her sister. They both had all the energy in the world, they didn't sleep, which complicated matters. "Thank you, now get in the car, young lady," I said, rushing them both out and buckling them into their car seats while Jake started the car.

"Where's my IPad?" asked Racheal, and I tossed it at her on my way around the car.

"No fair, I want mine!" shouted Luna, and I handed her hers. I knew my parents never let them on screens on the weekends, so they were allowed to have their IPads at home. I slumped into the passenger seat.

"Girls, please be good at Grandma and Grandpa's this weekend. They told me last weekend you ran off into the woods and they didn't find you for three hours." They both snickered at this. I whipped around and gave them my best angry mom look. "Not funny," I said, and they stopped laughing. Jake was snickering, too, and that wasn't helpful. I elbowed him in the ribs.

"No phasing, either," he said. "It drives your grandparents crazy." He was smiling, though, as though the thought of his kids driving my parents crazy amused him. He pulled up in front of the house, and the girls got out before I could even open the door.

"Wait for me," I grumbled under my breath, wondering why we even bought them car seats if they could out of them so well. When Jake and I got there, they already had the door open and my mom had her arms around them.

"Hi, girls," she said. Dad walked in, and they both ran over to hug him, Luna shouting "Hi, Grandpa," as they went.

I gave mom a look and yawned. She smiled. "Ness, Jake, you can go, we've got it," she said. I gave her a nod and waved to the girls.

"Bye, girls, we love you," I said.

Racheal turned back and smiled. "Love you, Mommy," she said, and Luna waved briefly before taking off for the kitchen. I rolled my eyes and left with Jake.

"Wow, they are a handful," I said, and he laughed.

"I still love them, though," he said. "Even if they drive me up a wall."

I laughed. As we drove back out, I saw another car driving in. Assuming it was probably grandpa, I shrugged it off and reached for my phone in my pocket. It wasn't there. "Shoot, left my phone back at the house," I said. Jake turned around, and when we got back, I ran up to the door and opened it, thinking I must have put my phone on the counter just inside the house. I opened the door, however, and low and behold, there was my little brother Brandon sitting with mom on the couch. "Mom, I forgot my…" I started, but trailed off when I saw him. "What the heck?" I said, as our chocolate brown eyes locked from across the room.
