hey yes i'm back with an update. i think it's a shitty one but oh well, it's been a while since i wrote. i hope you guys enjoy and thank you for sticking by me and this story. it means a lot xx - belle
"Doctor's orders, Jay. You need to rest," I remind him of what both Dr. Manning and Dr. Rhodes advised.
"And, how can I rest when my brother's missing?" Jay demands.
I sigh, gently putting my hands against his bare chest and pushing him back into a lying positing on the sofa. It had been a week since he'd been discharged from the hospital and just a couple days since he learnt that his brother had been kidnapped the day he was attacked.
Needless to say, he's been restless ever since, and even partially angry that I hadn't told him the news as soon as he'd woken up. But in my defence, I'd been more concerned about him re-opening his wound or having internal bleeding.
"Look, everyone's working their asses off to find Will. And we know Voight. He won't rest until he finds your brother," I reply calmly.
"Hailey, I need to be out there looking for him. I can't sit on my ass!"
"Okay, well, technically, you're lying on your ass but..."
Despite the situation, I see a hint of an amused smirk quirk the corner of Jay's lips. Some of the tension in the air dissipates at my lame attempt at a joke. But at least it works somewhat.
I lay beside him on the couch, draping my arm over the hard panes of his stomach. He wraps his arm around me, and I press a kiss to his shoulder.
"It's going to be okay," I tell him as confidently as I can. "When we find out who took Will, we'll make him pay."
I feel some of the taut muscles in Jay's body relax at my words, at the reassuring nature of them. He knows I mean it. He knows I'll help him give Will's kidnapper hell. Especially because as it turns out, Will's kidnapper tried to rape me years ago.
"I just – I wish I could remember what happened that day!" Jay heaves a frustrated sigh, rubbing his face with his free hand.
My heart aches at the pain in his voice. Being knocked out had given him a mild concussion, and resulted in temporary memory loss.
"You will. Okay? It might take some time, but you'll remember. I know you will," I reassure him softly, kissing his cheek.
Though he doesn't reply, I can only hope he believes me and that I end up being right.
At that very exact moment, my phone buzzes to life. I so desperately want to ignore it but the constant buzzing signals that it's most likely important. So I answer it.
"Hailey, it's me, Kim."
"Yeah, what's up, Kim?" I say.
"We just got sent a video...and, well, it's bad," Kim reveals.
I sit up immediately. "Kim...what is it?"
I know Jay hears the cautious tone in my voice because he's suddenly also sitting up, though a little too fast, I notice, as he clenches his jaw to keep himself from wincing at the pain. But my eyes catch his hand pressing against his bandaged wound.
"I'm sending it to you," Kim replies. "We're working on tracking the source that sent it. But right now, no dice."
"Alright, keep us updated," I tell her before hanging up. I look at my screen and see that she's sent the video. For some odd reason, my finger trembles as I hit the play button. I dread what I might see. And more importantly, what Jay might see.
My breath hitches in my throat as the camera pans around what look like a dark, dank basement cellar. There's barely any light coming into the cellar room, but Will's bound body still stands out. His hair is mussed up, blood trickling down the side of his head. His shirt's unbuttoned from the top. As I pause the video to see if I can detect any clues as to where he's being held, my hearts drops as I notice blood soaking his shirt. I realise, only after I hear Jay swear angrily, that there's a knife still sticking out of Will's stomach. His hands aren't bound, though, because one of his hands is pressed to his wound but he's basically out cold.
I clench my jaw hard. Marco D'Amelio won't be happy to see me again.
"I know that place," Jay suddenly speaks, his voice grim.
It almost doesn't register with me until I process his words again. "What?"
"I know where Will is," Jay says again, standing up now. I figure protesting now or reminding him of the doctors' orders won't go down well.
"How?" I inquire still reeling from his sudden declaration.
Jay turns to me as he slips on his grey t-shirt. I can't help but admire the way it accentuates his biceps and torso.
"You know it too, Hailey," Jay replies. "It's where I was held captive with Angela."
Her name – the name of the bitch who tried to kill my partner and the man I love – sends waves of red hot anger through me. I clench my fists.
It doesn't go unnoticed by my detective partner though. He's immediately at my side, gently getting me to uncurl my fists before I end up making myself bleed by how tightly I'm clenching them.
"Hey," he says softly. "I'm here."
I nod, wrapping my arms around his neck. "Yeah, you're right. You are." I press my face into his chest, as he tightens his arms around my waist.
"I still want to kill her for almost murdering you," I add firmly.
Jay chuckles. "Remind me never to get on your bad side."
I smirk up at him. "Damn straight, Halstead."
I step away from him, grabbing my phone and my gun. "Let's go get Will back."
"I like the way you think, Upton," Jay smirks.
"There's a lot more about me you like, Halstead, and you damn well know it."
I don 't miss the sexy smirk that crosses Jay's face.
I roll my eyes playfully. Men.
We don't even need to convince Voight to let Jay tag along. And the truth is, nobody dares to go against Jay's wishes at the moment. We all know how stubborn he can be when he puts his mind to something. And right now, he's determined to get his brother back safe and alive.
I try to remember that right now, I'm not just Jay's girlfriend. But, I also happen to be a cop, and his partner. I need to trust his instincts, even if they do end up putting him in shitty situations sometimes...Or rather, always.
We get into our vehicles and drive to the same building I had found Jay in...And nearly lost him in. I shake my head to clear the bad memory away.
Focus, Hailey.
When we get there, we immediately breach. Jay and I get to the exact same place I had found Jay shot, barely breathing.
But...Will's gone.
