"Who the hell is Marco D'Amelio?" Jay demands.
We all see he's furious. Not just for the fact that none of us told him that the bastard who stabbed him and took Will was Marco, but also that, just when he thought we had a breakthrough in finding Will, we were left disappointed.
"Booth's right-hand man," I reply. "I knew him when I was undercover."
"So, he's the son of a bitch who stabbed me and kidnapped Will." Jay's voice is as cold as ice. "He's a dead man walking."
Without another word, Jay leaves the bullpen. I watch him leave, knowing this time, he needs to be alone to cool down. But I worry.
The last times I let him go off on his own, he almost ended up dead. TWICE. And with Booth out there, clearly gunning for Jay's blood, I'm even more worried about Jay.
Not to mention, with Jay's rage, he's capable of doing something reckless, which could get him killed.
Vanessa shakes me gently. "Hey! Hailey, listen."
I shake my head, regaining my focus. "Uh, sorry," I say sheepishly. "Uh, what happened?"
"We've got an APB out for D'Amelio. He's clearly still in Chicago. He won't get far with Will," Vanessa assures me.
"The CCTV footage from the warehouse also shows D'Amelio entering and leaving with Will. We've sent out a BOLO for the vehicle he used," Kevin adds.
I nod. "So until then we can only sit tight." I let out a frustrated sigh.
"Hailey, if you worked with this bastard, you can think like him. Where would he go to hide?" Voight asks me.
I shake my head. "He was always cautious about setting any patterns for himself. The son of a bitch never established any kind of M.O. We can't flush him out that way."
"Then, how?" Kim inquires.
"Me."
"What?"
I turn at Jay's voice. Again, I don't fail to notice the hard look in his eyes and his clenched jaw.
I steel myself to reveal the incident to my colleagues, and my boyfriend.
"Booth and D'Amelio are cut from the same cloth," I start slowly, sitting on my desk. I can't look at Jay right now. "Both obsessed with power and me. A while after Garrett disappeared, and I realized Booth had a part to play in that, I was getting ready to get out. To find some way of getting out without blowing my cover. I was in my UC apartment, it was cheap as hell, no peep hole at all. I didn't know who was knocking, but when I opened it, Marco was there. He told me Booth sent him. I got suspicious, knowing Booth would never send him without contacting me first and letting me know. But before I could even ask him what he was doing there, he attacked me and almost raped me. I got away and used that as my reason to disappear. My cover stayed intact because of that."
I gather the courage to look at Jay. And his face has softened, though the fire in his eyes is still unquenchable.
"That's why it has to be me," I say. "I know it's a risk. But it's one I'm willing to take."
I'm about to enter the lion's den when my phone buzzes in my hand. I glance at the screen to see it's my mother. But I ignore the call, despite the uneasy feeling in my stomach. It's probably important but I can't lose my focus now. Not when I'm about to face D'Amelio again after suppressing the memory of what he'd tried to do.
"I see you're just as sexy as ever, Kelly."
His words, his dark tone, send shivers down my spine as I turn. I plaster a fake smirk on my face.
"Time doesn't change some people," I shrug back.
I'm aware my team can hear every word. Every breath.
Marco grins menacingly. "So, you still hate me for that night, I see."
His eyes lock straight at my chest.
"Eyes up here, Marco!" I snap. "We have to talk."
He steps closer to me, his fingers grazing my cheek, and I struggle not to flinch at his touch.
"We can talk later, Kelly." Again, his eyes drop lower and it takes everything in me not to slap him or kick him.
"Now. We talk now, Marco, or else I walk."
Marco's eyes darken with rage. "Are you working with the police?" he demands darkly.
I scoff. "Do I look that stupid to you?"
His rough hand wraps around my neck and he squeezes. "I want the truth, Kelly. Why are you here?"
I struggle to breathe. "I-Information," I choke, feeling my lungs straining for air.
"What information?" he growls, tightening his grip even more.
"C-cop...brother...kidnap."
The way he suddenly lets go of me as if he's been burnt is all the proof I need that I'm getting close to breaking him down.
I cough as I gasp for air, one hand clutching at my sore throat. I know I'm going to have bruises there, and Jay's going to want to kill Marco for laying a hand on me. And I want to kill him too, but right now, I know I need to stay composed.
"What did you say?" Marco asked me, looking only slightly panicked.
"I heard that a cop's brother has been kidnapped," I say once I've gotten air back into my lungs. "If you have anything to do with it, Marco, I can help you."
"Who says I do?" Marco rages.
I look him in the eye as I say, "the cops have you on camera, Marco. They know."
He swallows hard, not realising that I notice it. "How can you help, even if it was me who kidnapped some cop's brother?"
I smirk, even as I feel sick to the stomach saying the words that come out of my mouth. "How do you think I got the information?"
Marco's eyes widen before he laughs. "Oh damn, woman. You're sleeping with him?"
I raise an eyebrow in affirmative.
"Damn, Kelly. Damn. You're good."
"I can help you, but you need to tell me where his brother is."
Marco stays quiet for a moment before he replies. "He's not here, but it won't matter even if I tell you...He's as good as dead."
