Yang POV
We followed behind (Y/N) as he entered the cathedral. Inside were a series of columns and archways made of stone. Two rows of benches were facing an altar where a statue of two male figures stood against a wall beneath stained glass windows. It was filled mostly with older people and women in black gowns and weird white hats. It was all so alien.
"You ladies find a place to sit," (Y/N) told us. "I'll be with you in a moment."
Ruby led us into the aisle where she sat on the left bench in the third row. "This place is weird," she said. "Why do people come here?"
"This is a place of worship Ruby," Blake replied. "People come here to pray to the gods, but since the Great War ended there have been fewer places like this in Remnant."
"What's (Y/N) doing?" Ruby asked pointing to the back of the room. We turned to see him lighting a candle and placing it on a pedestal among other candles. Then he went down on his knees and bowed his head with his hands clasped.
"He said he's paying respect to the dead," said Weiss. "I guess that's how you do it."
"Oh," Ruby said. "Maybe I should give it a try." She then got down on her knees taking the same position as (Y/N). I already knew who she was praying for.
Moments later (Y/N) joined us on the bench. He remained silent seeming to stare into space. "I apologize if this is boring," he said. "It's a personal obligation come here at least once a week. I've been doing it for centuries. I don't expect you to understand."
"We don't judge you for your beliefs," I said. "There are many people who still worship."
(Y/N) smiled. "Thanks," he replied. His smile quickly turned to a frown and his eyes widened. "He's here."
We looked toward the cathedral entrance to find the Kurgan standing in front of the candle lit pedestal putting them out with his hands as he laughed to himself. "What do we do?" I asked.
"Nothing," (Y/N) answered. "As long as we're on holy ground we're safe. Not even he will break that rule."
The Kurgan walked slowly toward us with the chains on his pants rattling as he did. His head was shaved bald revealing a tattoo of a Beowolf on the left side. Safety pins were in his neck covering the scar across his throat. He positioned himself behind (Y/N) and placed his hand on his shoulder. "Kastagir is gone," he said in his hoarse voice. "Now you and I are all that remain."
What the Kurgan had said shocked us. (Y/N) had told us that the Gathering was almost over, but he failed to mention how close to the end it was. This meant that we now sat in the same room with the last two Immortals in all of Remnant.
The Kurgan then fell into the bench behind us prompting (Y/N) to turn around. "Nice to see you Kurgan," he said with a smile. "Who does your hair?"
"I am in disguise," the Kurgan answered. "This way no one will know who I am."
"Well I do," (Y/N) replied.
"And so do we," Ruby said. "We know what you are too."
"Ruby," I said scolding my sister.
The Kurgan chuckled. "Making new friends so close to the end Highlander?" he asked. "A meaningless effort."
"What do you want?" (Y/N) asked.
"Your head," the Kurgan said. "And the Prize. I'm guessing you told them all about that too." He was silent for a moment. "Watch," he whispered as he nodded toward two older women in black gowns and white hats. "HAPPY HALLOWEEN LADIES!" he shouted and proceeded to flick his tongue at them suggestively as they continued down the aisle. "Nuns," the Kurgan said. "No sense of humor."
Disgusting, I thought. I was beginning to understand the savagery that (Y/N) described. To think this man has been for so long spreading his evil across Remnant.
"I believe these ladies have a question for you," (Y/N) said. "And to be honest I'm interested in hearing the answer myself."
The Kurgan turned his attention to us. "Alright," he said. "Shoot."
"Why are you helping Torchwick and the White Fang?" Blake asked.
The Kurgan chuckled. "I'm doing a favor for an old acquaintance," he stated. "Help out by getting their plans in motion. Personally I think you and the rest of your kind should be put down like the animals you are."
Blake rose up from the bench looking ready to pounce. "Blake!" (Y/N) exclaimed. "Immortal or not you will respect the rule of holy ground when you're around me." Blake sat down still looking furious from the Kurgan's words. "You know there is one thing that I regret in my mortal life." He continued an then pointed at the scar on the Kurgan's neck. "It's that my blade didn't cut deep enough. Both Methos and Ramirez were right about you. You're slime."
"Yeah slime," Ruby said forcing me to nudge her.
"Methos was a coward who ended his own life!" the Kurgan shouted causing his voice to boom throughout the entire cathedral. "And Ramirez was an effete snob who died on his knees. I took his head and then I raped his woman before his blood even grew cold." People had begun to leave the church as he cackled.
"You're worse than slime," Weiss said.
"Says the daughter of Jacque Schnee," the Kurgan said with a smile making Weiss' eyes widen. "Yes, I know who you are. I worked security for your father once upon a time, and the way I see it your family is no different than me." He looked back at (Y/N) who appeared to be in pain. "What's wrong?" the Kurgan asked causing (Y/N) to look back at him with a furious gaze. "I see. Ramirez lied. She wasn't his woman she was yours, and she never told you. I wonder why. Perhaps I gave her something you couldn't." (Y/N grabbed the Kurgan by his jacket. "And secretly she yearned for my return." Both Immortals stood up. "HOLY GROUND HIGHLANDER!" he shouted ripping (Y/N)'s hand away. "Practice what you preach."
"You can't stay in here forever," (Y/N) said stepping into the aisle. "Come on girls we're leaving." We did as (Y/N) said and exited the row into the aisle.
"You are weak Highlander," the Kurgan said. "You will always be weaker than I."
(Y/N) grabbed the Kurgan by the chin tilted his head back and crept close to his face. "I'll be out front."
The Kurgan pushed (Y/N)'s hand away. "Goodbye (L/N)," he said with a smile. "We will meet soon enough."
(Y/N) walked past us down the aisle and we followed after. As we did the Kurgan laughed and we were forced to listen to him until we left the cathedral. Once outside (Y/N) stopped next to a street light, and with a cry he punched it leaving a dent in the metal.
"(Y/N)," Ruby began. "What did he mean-"
"Don't," (Y/N) said cutting her off.
"But-" Ruby said.
(Y/N) turned around looking enraged. "Don't," he repeated pointing his finger at her.
"You really meant it when you said the Gathering was almost over," I said. "You're the last two."
(Y/N)'s face relaxed and then he let out a sigh. "The four of you should return to Beacon," he said as he moved toward us. "He won't come after you there." He handed me a card with his business name and numbers. "My Scroll broke in our fight last night so call my office number if you need anything. Have a good day."
He left the four of us as he headed back in the direction of his store. As I watched him grow farther away I couldn't help but feel sad. This feeling was soon accompanied by a pain in my chest. I didn't understand. Why is seeing him like this hurt, I thought. "Am I…?"
"Yang," Ruby said snapping out of my train of thought. "Are you alright?"
I looked back to the street to find (Y/N) was gone. "Yeah," I replied. "I'm okay."
