Hermione's not really a recluse. She's not particularly shy, or introverted, or anything like that. Still, she only has a small handful of friends. It's the making friends that's the problem for her, but once she has those friends she loves them to death. And she's been lucky — because those friends have loved her back in the same way. She would do anything for them and she knows they would do anything for her.
Except —
"I don't know him Gin," Hermione says, a little bit tired of Ginny asking her the same question over and over again.
"But you have classes with him," Ginny points out, just like she has for the last hour she's been having this argument. "You're much more likely to talk to him than I am."
Hermione groans, but she knows that if she had the same problem as Ginny — talking to a boy, of all things — Ginny would help her out. So, reluctantly, Hermione agrees to talk to Dean in their Charms class.
"Can I sit here?" Hermione asks, and Dean looks up at her, looking slightly confused. She supposes that's warranted, seeing as she hasn't said a word to him for the past five years they've been in classes together.
"Sure," Dean says, gesturing a hand to the seat. Hermione takes her seat and takes out all of the things she needs for class. They're slightly early, and Hermione hates it, because they're sitting there in awkward silence, waiting for Flitwick to arrive.
"Do you know Ginny Weasley?" Hermione asks, finally, turning to Dean with a little forced smile.
"'Course," Dean says with a little shrug. "She's… Ginny," he says, waving his hand in the air a little bit.
Hermione nods, pursing her lips. What does she do now?
"Why?" Dean asks, and Hermione tries for a nice smile.
"You should ask her to Hogsmeade sometime," Hermione blurts out, really not sure what Ginny wanted for her to do. She cringes internally because maybe that's a little bit too direct, but Dean doesn't seem deterred.
"Really?" he asks, giving Hermione a little frown. "You think I should?"
Hermione gives him a little nod and gives him a faint little smile. "You should."
Dean smiles back at her, a little bit tentatively. "I will, then."
