This chapter is dedicated to Freddie Mercury. He and the rest of Queen were brought onto Highlander for one song, but after seeing footage from the film the band was inspired to write another five songs (plus Freddie's unreleased cover of "New York, New York"). If it wasn't for their music Highlander would not possess the magic it has. You were taken before your time Freddie. We all miss you.
3rd POV
The airship flew through the air as the deafening sound of its turbines filled the ears of the six passengers. Team RWBY remained silent as Oobleck badgered (Y/N) with questions about history. Learning their guest was immortal gave him an opportunity to learn. "You actually fought along the samurai in Mistral?"
"More like I was forced to fight with them," (Y/N) answered. "Either that or lose my head. They let me go after the Tengu were defeated."
Yang was uneasy with the Immortal's focus being on Oobleck's questions rather than her and the others. It was as if he had completely forgot about the moment they had before leaving Beacon. "Hey (Y/N)," a voice came from beside her. It was Ruby whose hand was raised slightly to get the Immortal's attention.
"I'm sorry for interrupting you two," Ruby began. "It's just that you haven't told us why you faked your death."
"Oh that," (Y/N) started. "I don't intend on returning to my life as an antique dealer once this is over. I did it as a chance to start over, and so Rachel will get everything I have in accordance with my will."
"That's another thing you haven't told us," Yang said seeming upset. "What exactly is your relationship with your secretary?"
Yang's tone made (Y/N) glare at her catching her off guard. "Why do want to know?"
"I think what Yang is trying to ask is why you would give everything to your secretary," Blake said saving Yang.
(Y/N) sighed. "Forgive me," he replied. "Rachel's my daughter."
"Your daughter!?" the girls exclaimed.
"Adopted daughter," (Y/N) added. "I rescued her when she was a little girl after her village was destroyed by bandits. I took her in, put her through school, and supported her until she was ready to be on her own. She only came back into my life five years ago after her husband died. So I gave her a job as my secretary."
"So you faked your death so she would be taken care of," Weiss stated.
"It's the sort of thing a parent should do for their child," (Y/N) replied. "Even if they're not related by blood."
"Have you ever had your own children?" Ruby asked.
"No," (Y/N) answered. "Immortals can't have children. We're all sterile from birth so even as mortals we're unable to."
"That's sad," Ruby replied.
"So what do you know about Mountain Glen," Yang asked changing the subject.
"One of Vale's greatest failures in the past century," (Y/N) said. "It was the kingdom's attempt to expand its borders. But the project was abandoned after a massive Grimm attack chased away the workers. Definitely a good hiding place for a group of radical Faunus."
"And the Kurgan will be with them?" Weiss asked.
"I can't imagine any other way he could leave the city without the authorities finding him," (Y/N) answered. "With three millennia of experience won't amount to much."
"Mr. Nash," Oobleck said. "I believe if I was immortal I would devote myself to study. I would have an eternity to gather knowledge past, present, and future. A chance to see the progression of mankind for centuries to come."
"Just as long as you don't lose your head," Ruby said jokingly causing the professor to frown.
Although the joke was inappropriate (Y/N) couldn't help but laugh. "You know what Professor," he began. "You just reminded me of an Immortal from long ago. Perhaps you've heard of him. Fredrick the Mercurian."
Fredrick the Mercurian?" Oobleck questioned with surprise. "The Valerian poet and swords master? He was Immortal?"
"Once upon a time he was one of the oldest and wisest of us," (Y/N) said. "He trained my teacher Ramirez after he became immortal. Fredrick saw immortality as a blessing from the gods. Like you he wanted to see mankind progress. With each passing year a new sword technique, a new piece of literature, a new patch of flower on an open field. He wanted to see it all. He lived to be thirty-five hundred years old."
"Ah, yes," Oobleck said with a frown. "Fredrick the Mercurian was found beheaded three hundred years ago. He passed leaving behind great works."
"Immortals only cared about one," (Y/N) responded. "He left behind a song that told its listeners who we are, and what we are to become. 'Princes of the Universe'."
"Really?" Oobleck said sounding surprised. "I've read the song before, but I never would have imagined that."
"How does it go?" Yang asked.
(Y/N) gave Yang a grin and straightened himself out. "I'm not much of a singer so I'll say the words," he said gaining the attention of the four girls. "Here we are. Born to be kings, we're the princes of the universe. Here we belong, fighting to survive in a world with the darkest powers. And here we are, we're the princes of the universe. Here we belong, fighting for survival. We've come to be the rulers of your world. I am immortal. I have inside me blood of kings. I have no rival. No man can be my equal. Take me to the future of your world."
"I can see the connection," Blake said. "The lyrics are from an Immortal's perspective. You are the princes of the universe and you become king when you receive the Prize."
"Very intuitive Blake," (Y/N) said. "And that is the reason all Immortals know this song. After all it is about us."
"Well it's beautiful," Weiss said.
(Y/N) smiled and then turned to look out the airship. He saw ruined buildings in the distance. "Looks like we're here."
"Can you sense the Kurgan?" Ruby asked.
"Not from this far away," (Y/N) answered. "I'll have a better chance once we land."
Meanwhile Underground…
White Fang members busied themselves moving crates to the train. As they did Torchwick strolled through the area followed closely by Neo and the Kurgan. "Well I've got to say Kurgan everyone has been working harder since you arrived," he said to the Immortal. "We're ahead of schedule."
"What can I say," the Kurgan said happily with his raspy voice. "My presence is like a whip. Those that worked the Dust mines for SDC can vouch for that." The Kurgan looked to Neo who smiled at him. "I think you've started to grow on me, Neo."
"Don't get any ideas," Torchwick responded.
The Kurgan laughed. "No need to concern yourself Torchwick," he said. "I respect the little one too much. Now if you excuse me I need to take a piss." The Immortal left the pair heading toward the back end of the train. He passed several White Fang members who took quick glances at him as they worked. The Kurgan located a secluded cavern, pulled down his pants zipper, and began to urinate. It was as he finished that he chose to acknowledge the one watching him. "I didn't think you would keep an eye on me down here."
A Seer floated into view by the opening of the cavern. "You shouldn't be here Kurgan," Salem's voice came from the Grimm. "I wanted you to stay in Vale. You must be there if Cinder-"
"Your little Fall Maiden is none of my concern," the Immortal said as he zipped up his fly. "I haven't been helping you out of obligation. I'm doing it to pass time. The Gathering is my only concern and it is almost over.
"What?" Salem questioned.
"I figured you'd be keeping track," the Kurgan said with a smile. "It's down to two. (L/N) and I."
"The Highlander?" Salem said sounding surprised. "Your teacher foretold he would be the one to take your head. Seems that it is fate that the Game has come down to the two of you."
"Heh," the Kurgan scoffed as he walked past the Seer. "It is our fate to fight yes, but it is I that will take his head."
"Viktor," Salem began. "I have been alive since before your race was born. In that time I've encountered both men and gods. Arrogant, prideful, believing themselves infallible. Like you."
"HYPOCRITE!" the Kurgan shouted turning back to face the Seer. "The Highlander will die, and the Prize will be mine!"
"And what if you die?" Salem asked.
The Kurgan took a deep breath and chuckled as he began to tap into his Quickening. "Alright," he said with a smile. "Then let's put it this way. Whichever one of us wins, you lose." Electricity sparked behind his eyes as he raised his hand toward the Grimm and focused his Quickening into it. The Seer exploded into white light leaving no traces of itself behind. The Immortal turned away and started to walk back to the train. "I'll have you on your knees very soon witch," he said to himself. And then we can continue where we left off."
