Chapter 7: We'll Always Have the Lake Cabin
Bakugo pulls the car up to the dock and puts it in park. He refused to look at Kirishima after they had another small debate on the way back. Kirishima continues to badger Bakugo with apologies, kisses, and tender caresses. Bakugo eventually gives up and places a quick kiss on his lover's lips, then pinches the same lips close, stating that he wouldn't make-out in the car while 'Black Velvet' was playing. Kirishima's answer was to turn off the radio, and he did just that. Bakugo frowned and hmphed, then let himself lean into Kirishima's kisses. He turns the car off, leaving them in darkness save for the dock light.
Just as Kirishima's hand was traveling under Bakugo's shirt, both men pause when they hear the engines of motorcycles approaching.
"Shit," Bakugo swears as he looks in the rearview mirror to see three guys stop their bikes. "I bet it's those assholes from the bar!"
Kirishima puts his hand on Bakugo's shoulder and says, "Hey, let me do the talking. Maybe I can talk them into leaving us alone. Wait! Bakugo!" But Bakugo was already out of the car. Cursing under his breath, Kirishima quickly grabs the keys from the ignition, sliding each one through his fingers as a make-shift knuckle duster. "Guys like these don't fight fair," He says and gets out of the car, hand behind his back, to stand beside Bakugo.
"Evening, gentlemen," Kirishima says as kindly as he can, flashing a big grin. "Is there something you need?"
"Yeah, there is," Says the biker in the middle. "You ignored our fine hospitality,"
Bakugo looks at the middle-aged biker who spoke with a sneer. "Aren't you a little old to be playing dress-up? Last I checked, it wasn't Halloween,"
"Bakugo!" Kirishima hisses.
"It's smart-ass mouth fags like you that need to get your face smashed in!" Says the other biker, this one a little younger, standing right of the older man.
"Oh yeah? Well, this is one fag who can whip your sorry skinny ass from here to the other side of the goddamn lake and make it look like child's play!"
"Bakugo! Stop!"
"Yeah, listen to your fairy-friend!" Says the third biker. "We don't like your kind here. This is a town of good folk who believe in tradition!"
Bakugo scoffs. "And Jesus wouldn't be caught in a tutu riding on your shitty brand of bikes! Everyone knows Jesus said he hates 'figs' and not 'fags.'" He couldn't resist slipping that into the fight.
"Hey! That's enough out of you, faggot! I'll show you how a real man fights!" Says the middle biker.
"Guys, this is getting out of hand," Kirishima says, trying to reason with them. "We're all guys just enjoying the night, so be on your way, and we'll go our way. Have a good night,"
"Hey Red, you chicken?" Mocks the second biker, making clucking noises.
Kirishima was tempted to roll his eyes but Bakugo did it for him.
"What is this? Preschool?" Bakugo says and puts up his fists. "This fag will break each and every one of you apart! I call it 'Ass-Whooping' for Jesus!" He smirks and gets into a fighting stance. "Come on, show me what you've got, needle-dick!"
Kirishima didn't know who struck first, but in a few moments, it was an all-out brawl between Bakugo and the three bikers. He couldn't allow Bakugo to be ganged up on, so he joined in the fight, first trying to pull the guys off of Bakugo, or trying to pull Bakugo away. His lover was a vicious fighter, and it showed, but three against one was still at odds. One biker put Bakugo in a headlock, and the second Kirishima saw that his key-lined fist punched the biker in the face. The keys scratch the man's skin, making him scream out in pain, letting go of Bakugo to clutch at his cheek.
One of the other bikers grabbed Kirishima's weaponed hand, and the two went at it with Kirishima trying to get the other to release his arm. Bakugo was fighting the third biker and had the man down on the ground, punching him in the face repeatedly. The first biker comes over and tackles Bakugo away from the other. Kirishima yells and flips the biker over, racing to help Bakugo.
As the brawl continued, they got closer and closer to the bank of the lake. One of the bikers slipped in the water and took Kirishima down with him. Bakugo and the two bikers were on the dock. Bakugo shoves one into the water but the other biker pushes him as well. Now all but the first biker with the scratched up face is in the water. The other biker in the water jumps onto Bakugo and holds his head under, attempting to drown him. Kirishima wiggled his way out of the current fight to try and tackle the one holding Bakugo. There's a sharp pain to his face as the biker who is still standing kicks him hard and he stumbles into the water. Soon, he too is being held underwater, struggling to get away.
Bakugo can hear the bikers shouting insults at them through the water. He was trying hard not to take in water as he struggles to free himself. And then, the pressure is let off of him and he springs out from the water, gasping for air and coughing.
Kirishima does the same when his attacker lets go of his head, screaming that 'something's biting him.'
"What the fuck is that?" One of the bikers shout.
Another shouts, "Run! It's a fucking monster!"
Bakugo watches the three stumble out of the water and run to their bikes, taking off quickly.
Kirishima looks behind him and sees a large fish swimming at the surface, then dives under the water, its large tail the last to disappear. Kirishima smiles through his gasps. "Thank you, All Might!"
"What are...you...talking about?" Bakugo asks, panting and wet.
"All Might saved us! He scared the bikers away! He paid us back for helping him! Wait, are you alright?" Kirishima rushes to his lover, both still standing the water.
"I'm fine!" Bakugo wipes his bangs from his face. "Fuck those guys! Shit!"
Kirishima, though angry at Bakugo for starting the fight, but also relieved that they were okay, brings Bakugo into a tight embrace. "We almost died tonight...I'm glad you're okay. That we're BOTH safe…"
Bakugo says nothing, burying his face in Kirishima's neck and hugging him back.
"Let's get back to the cabin...we'll lick each other's wounds."
"...I'm sorry," Bakugo whispers. "I…"
"Come on, let's go back. We'll talk about it more later."
After they were back at Bakugo's cabin, changed in pajamas and bandaged up, they talked about what happened. They expressed their honest feelings about society's rules and the world, more so Bakugo, who, after some time of talking, Kirishima realized that his lover just needed someone to hear him. So, he let Bakugo rant and rave until the blonde was exhausted, laying with a heavy head in Kirishima's lap. Kirishima strokes Bakugo's hair as the fire slowly starts to die.
"Hey, Bakugo? I was just thinking...maybe we should call the police and file a report. Just in case those guys try to come back at us from a legal angle."
Bakugo snorts. "And tell the police what? Three bikers in this small town wearing jean and leather jackets attacked two guys? There's a lead," he adds sarcastically. "The police won't care. Just forget about it. Let it go."
"With the way All Might scared those guys away, I doubt they'll be making any trips to the police station! The cops will think they're crazy! Guess that works in our favor."
"Yeah, you're right," Bakugo says. "Let's go to bed. I'm fucking tired."
But neither of them could sleep after what happened. They stayed up all night, snuggled in bed together, and finally got up to watch the sunrise over the lake with cups of coffee.
Kirishima realized then that his week here at the cabin was almost done, and they would leave their special paradise. The very idea of it brought tears to his eyes. Thinking back on what happened last night, and the long talks they had, Kirishima almost didn't want to leave the lake island to go back to reality. He liked being here with just himself and Bakugo, living off the land, enjoying each other's company, exploring, making love, cooking, and camping...but in two days that would all be over. He has to go back to the city, back to work. Technically, Bakugo can stay here for as long as he wants as his family owns the cabin.
"What are you crying about?" Bakugo asks when he sees the tears in Kirishima's eyes.
"Oh...just that...I have to return to the city in a few days...and our paradise island on the lake is gone."
Bakugo stays silent.
"We don't live near each other," Kirishima adds. "We're at least an hour and a half away. Dating will be hard…."
"No, it won't," Bakugo states plainly.
"Huh?" Kirishima tilts his head.
"You're moving in with me, dummy. There are gyms all over the place where I live, and I'll need a second person to help me pay rent while I look for another job."
"W-what? But I-"
Bakugo glares at him. "There's no 'buts,' Kiri. You'll do as I say and move in with me! If you don't do as I say, I'll dump your horny ass right here and now and feed you to All Might!"
Kirishima is quiet for a moment, dumbfounded, then slowly grins. "Well...with a threat like that, who am I to say 'no'?" Kirishima's apartment was small and his lease was up for renewal. He could leave and move in with Bakugo, which is a high-class section of the city. "I'd have to pull a few strings, and we might not be able to be together right away, but I can't tell YOU no!"
"Oh, I don't answer to the word, 'no'," Bakugo says. "Everyone does as I say,"
Kirishima laughs and kisses Bakugo's cheek, knowing the truth behind his lover's words and tough-guy mask. "That's right, babe. Everyone does as you say!"
"And don't you forget it!"
It came the sad time that they had to leave the lake cabin. They packed up all their things and went back to the mainland with neither saying a word. It wasn't 'goodbye' for either of them, but they were leaving their special paradise. The last two days at the cabins were peaceful, with lots of exploring, fishing, games, and of course, lovemaking. Kirishima said that he wanted to have as much sex as possible before they are apart for a while. Bakugo did not disagree.
As they stand together on the dock, looking at their cars, they don't know what to say to the other. Finally, Kirishima breaks the silence.
"Well, we learned about ourselves, fell in love, did all kinds of stuff, made love, almost got killed…"
"Let's try to ignore and forget the last part," Bakugo says. "When I get back, I'm going to have a sit down with Deku and Shoto."
Kirishima nods. "I think that's a good idea. I'll tie up things on my end...and soon, we'll be living together!"
"Yeah. And we'll come back here every spring and summer," Bakugo says. "I'll make sure no one is on the island. Just because we're leaving our special world now doesn't mean we can't ever go back," He lets Kirishima put an arm around him.
"I didn't even think of that! You're right, Bakugo!"
"I'm always right," he says, leaning into Kirishima's hold. "We should….get going. I want to avoid the traffic."
"Me too. We'll keep in touch all the time!"
"We will,"
Kirishima grabs Bakugo in his arms and dips him for a long, passionate kiss. When he brings Bakugo back up, he's met with a slap.
"That's so lame! Never do that again!" Bakugo was blushing and he didn't fight back when Kirishima ignored him and dipped him again with a kiss. He tried to slap Kirishima like before, but the redhead caught his hand and kissed the knuckles. "I'm not some fancy lady!"
"And I'm no Mr. Darcy,"
"Just leave me alone!" Bakugo says, stomping off to his car with Kirishima's laughter echoing behind him.
"BYE ALL MIGHT! THANKS AGAIN!" Kirishima shouts to the lake.
As they get in their cars, Bakugo is setting up his phone when it beeps with a text message. It's from Kirishima and reads, 'I miss you!' Bakugo rolls his eyes with a smile and texts back, 'We haven't even left yet!' and looks at his lover through the window. Seeing Kirishima's sad smile, Bakugo felt like he was leaving a puppy. He picks up his phone and texts, 'Drive safe, idiot. Love you.'
Before Kirishima could get out of his car to latch onto Bakugo's, he was already backing out from the dock. They would be together soon, Bakugo reminds himself. And as he pulls up to the road, he looks back at the lake island through his rearview mirror. When he first arrived here after the breakup, he thought his world was over and nothing would be the same again.
How wrong he was.
Then, thirty seconds on the road, Bakugo's phone rings on bluetooth. "Seriously, Kiri?"
'I have bluetooth too!' Kirishima says, 'And my radio's broken!'
Bakugo smirks. "You're so full of shit."
2 Days Later
Izuku sits a the center of a long table in Shoto's penthouse. To his left, at the end, sits Bakugo and the opposite side sits Shoto. Each has a drink in front of them, but none are drinking. Bakugo glares at Shoto. Shoto stares back calmly. Izuku fidgets in his seat.
"So...um...does anyone want to start?" Izuku asks.
"You know what? I'll start," Bakugo offers, leaning his arms on the table and focusing his gaze on Shoto. "You're a fucking asshole, Shoto Todoroki...but I forgive you."
Izuku nearly falls out of his chair and Shoto looks surprised.
"You know how to apologize?" Shoto says.
Bakugo now crosses his arms and answers, "Yeah, I do. I actually should say 'thanks' for breaking up with me. If you hadn't, I would have never met Kirishima nor learned what makes a good relationship."
"...I see." Shoto says calmly. "I'll admit that I...have not always been...attentive to you, as a lover should. In all honesty, I didn't think it bothered you that much,"
"I was in love with you," Bakugo admits.
"You had a poor way of showing it," Shoto replies. "I also know that is not in your nature to be so open about your feelings. I have enough going on in my life every day, issues of my own, that I don't and didn't need a complicated lover like you. That is why I fell in love with Izuku," Shoto turns to Izuku. "You showed me companionship and kindness when I needed it the most, even when you didn't know me very well. I thank you for that every day,"
Izuku blushes sheepishly. "Well...that's just the kind of guy I am, I guess," he says. "Still, I cannot forgive you for what you did to Kacchan."
"Get over it, Deku," Bakugo tells him. "I had a lot of time to think on the island, and I've decided that this would be a learning experience for me, and I'll look at it that way instead. I don't want you leaving your job because of this,"
Izuku's eyes widen slightly. "Kacchan...This is such a rare side of you!"
Bakugo scoffs. "Don't expect to see it often, nerd,"
"I may have been acting out of jealousy when I fired you," Shoto tells Bakugo. "If you truly want to put everything behind us and start anew, then I am willing to have you back working for me. If you want to, that is?"
"No. I think it's time I move on to something else," Bakugo answers. "Deku, you stay here with Shoto. I don't want you leaving because of me."
"So, does that mean...we're all friends again?" Izuku asks them.
"Not 'friends'," Bakugo says, narrowing his eyes at Shoto. "But I'm not going to spend my time pining over you, Shoto. We're through. Completely. If Deku somehow chooses to be with you after this, then I'll tolerate your presence. If you are with Deku and pull the same shit you did with me, I'll break your goddamn kneecaps."
"KACCHAN!"
Shoto nods slowly. "I understand and accept. My offer to return to work still stands,"
"I already said I'm not taking it," Bakugo says and looks to Deku. "Do what you want, nerd. You've proven your point by standing up for me, which is super annoying and lame, and don't EVER do it again! But if you want to be with this half-and-half bastard...then that's fine with me."
Izuku looks at both Kacchan and Shoto with a smile and replies, "I have a lot of thinking to do…"
"I understand," Says Shoto, then he stands up from the chair. "Perhaps we will see each other again soon, Bakugo. If not, then good luck on your new path."
"Sure. See ya both around."
Bakugo leaves Shoto's penthouse and as he walks to his car in the parking garage, he takes out his phone to see a text from Kirishima.
'How'd it go?'
'Fine. I think Deku will end up dating Shoto'
'...you okay with that?'
Bakugo gets into the car and puts on his seatbelt. 'Yeah, I'm fine with it. It does sting a bit, but knowing you'll be here soon helps.'
'Well then...aren't YOU in for a BIG surprise when you get home!'
Bakugo frowns. 'What do you mean by that?'
'You'll see! SMOOCHES!'
'Don't say 'smooches' ever again.'
Bakugo arrives home at his apartment building and hesitates at the elevator. What was he so nervous about? He has a feeling that Kirishima is at his apartment door, waiting for him. What else could that text have meant? Bakugo presses the button for his floor. He had given Kirishima the floor number and apartment number. Could he be here already? Did he move out THAT fast? No. He must be visiting.
The elevator 'dings' and the doors open.
Bakugo sees Kirishima sitting on the floor against his apartment door. Beside him is a large duffel bag.
"Kiri?"
"Hey, Bakugo! Surprise!" Kirishima jumps up and hugs him.
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm moving in with you! Remember?"
"So soon?"
"Yeah! I talked to my landlord and we're working something out! I'm having all my necessary stuff brought here via movers! This bag," he holds it up "Is just to tie me over until the rest of my stuff gets here! I'm selling a bunch of stuff on the internet too!" Kirishima frowns when he sees that Bakugo doesn't appear happy to see him. "Bakugo? What's wrong? Aren't you...happy that I'm here?"
Bakugo clears his throat, taking out his key. "I am. I'm just...surprised you came so fast." He opens the door and lets Kirishima in, following behind. "I feel like you're stalking me," he can't help the teasing smile on his lips.
"I just don't want to be apart from you for any length of time," Kirishima says, dropping his bags and pulling Bakugo into an embrace. "And I didn't want you to be alone."
"I'm fine. But since you're here now...I might as well show you around."
Bakugo hasn't had someone in his apartment that wasn't Deku. When he was dating Shoto, he spent most of his time at the penthouse. He would rarely be home. Before he met Kirishima, one of his first thoughts was how was he going to live all alone after Shoto dumped him? He HAD lived alone before, but Bakugo got used to being with Shoto. It was as if he had two homes. Then, after Shoto dumped him, he ran off to the island, and there he met Kirishima.
"You're place is nice!" Kirishima says. "It's very modern,"
"I bet your crappy stuff will clash with mine," Bakugo frowns.
"Nah, I don't think so! Most of what I'm bringing here are personal items and my work out stuff. I'm selling most of my furniture. But don't worry! I promise you'll like my stuff! You will need more things in this place now that there will be two people living here!"
Bakugo sighs. "I should have left you on the island,"
"Aww, you love me!" Kirishima smooshes Bakugo's face and earned a slap. It was a love slap, but it still stung.
"I'm exhausted!" Bakugo tells him. "I'm getting comfortable and then I'm watching the news!"
"Can't we watch something not boring and depressing?" Kirishima asks.
"Like what? Your stupid YouTube show?"
Kirishima grins. "I'm not done editing that yet! I thought maybe a movie on Netflix?"
Bakugo rolls his eyes and says, "Fine. But it better be a good movie. If not, I'm falling asleep."
And he did fall asleep. Kirishima stroked Bakugo's hair as the blonde lay sleeping peacefully in his lap. It was getting late and he was tired as well. Turning off the movie, he gently picks Bakugo up in his arms, waiting for the other to wake up, but he doesn't. Bakugo nuzzles into him, still sleeping. Kirishima carries him to the bedroom and places his lover on the bed then gets in beside him. Bakugo immediately rolls over to spoon against him. Kirishima strokes his lover's arm and hip, staring at the moon through the window.
It wasn't the lake cabin, but so long as he has Bakugo beside him like this, then that is all he needs. They can make the lake cabin happen no matter where they are, so long as they are together. He kisses the top of Bakugo's head.
"Goodnight, Bakugo."
The next morning, Bakugo slowly wakes up to the smell of something cooking. He stirs in the bed, rubbing his eyes. The other side of the bed is empty and cold- Kirishima must have been up for a while. Kirishima must have sensed he was awake because the smiling redhead stands in the doorway with a mixing bowl.
"Good morning, sleepy-head! I'm making us waffles!"
"Waffles? I don't have a waffle iron?"
"Oh, it's easy! You just make a pancake and then use the mashed potato utensil and make little marks! Just pretend they're waffles!" Kirishima disappears from the doorway.
Bakugo sighs softly. 'They'll probably be so hard one can use them at the shooting range,' He gets up and cracks his back. 'I need to find a way to make my kitchen Kiri-Free. I doubt they make a Kirishima repellent. Maybe the stuff to spray on cats to keep them off the furniture will work…'
Bakugo sniffs the air then. Something's burning! The smoke alarm begins to beep.
"DON'T WORRY! EVERYTHING IS UNDER CONTROL!"
Bakugo flops back on the bed and makes a loud groaning noise. Soon the beeping stops and all he can smell is burned waffle-pancakes.
"SEE! I TOLD YOU! BREAKFAST IS READY ANYWAY!"
Bakugo rolls over onto his side and puts the pillow over his head.
"Bakugo? Are you coming? I promise it's not too bad! They're just...cooked really good."
Bakugo can't help but smile at the situation. As annoying as Kirishima's skills are in the kitchen, the redhead was with him and showing him every ounce of love and kindness towards him despite his bad attitude and temper. Bakugo knows he is difficult to be around, but Kirishima obviously doesn't mind.
"They're heart-shaped waffles, you know! And I put blueberries in them!"
It was so tacky...but he couldn't be happier.
"Alright...I'm coming!"
The End.
