Happy Birthday!

Daenerys

And here we are on day 4. Daenerys thought as her alarm started blaring. It only took three days to get you to let him kiss you, Dany. You're losing this battle and you're losing it hard.

She certainly was. From the beginning, she knew that there was a connection. Whatever his intentions were from the beginning, he's never lied to her. He can get her open up to him unlike any other. Hell, he knew her better than Viserys. And he was her brother!

Groaning at the inevitable call of the cock, she pressed the off button on her alarm clock. Gods be praised that she didn't have to be in until nine. Sophie had sent a group message to everyone last night that she wasn't opening the cafe until ten this morning. Sitting up and stretching her arms out and then her back. Her phone lit up with a ding and she squinted at the text alert. It was Sophie. Swiping the screen, she read the message.

Good morning all! Happy Casual Friday!

Today we're making it extra special!

No uniforms! Come dressed in casual

attire.

-Sophie

Odd. Daenerys thought. The uniform wasn't so horrible. It was a beige T-shirt with the cafe's logo on it and a pair of jeans. But she wouldn't mind picking out her own outfit for the day. Rubbing the sleep out of her eyes, she throws off her blanket and heads for the loo. She took her shower first and then dried off as she brushed her teeth.

Getting dressed was a cinch. Since she got to choose, she picked a puffy peach blouse and brown wide-legged trouser and beige ballet flats. Next was her hair. As she twisted her silver locks into a braid, she noticed in the mirror's reflection was a perfectly wrapped present sitting on the vanity. With a bow and everything. Which was odd. She swore that it wasn't there when she went to bed. Slightly confused, she tied the end of her braid and went to examine it.

When she got closer, she noticed an envelope perched against it. It was addressed to her. She picked it up and on it, it read Daenerys. Which made her blink. Was this actually for her? Curious, she opened the envelope. Inside was a greeting card. She pulled it out, smiling at the artwork. 'I tried to get you a dragon. But it wouldn't fit in the box.' It showed a picture of a round smiling dragon with tiny wings as it appeared to have just broken free from a small box. She opened it and saw Jorah's neat handwriting.

Daenerys, while I understand the circumstances of our arrangement are less than ideal, it doesn't mean we can't make the best of it. Forgive me, but I understand that today is your birthday and I've taken the liberty of getting you a little something. I think you'll find that it's something you'll enjoy for years to come. Consider it motivation for a brighter future.

Happy Birthday,

Jorah

He really can be sweet when he tries. She thought with a smile. Then put the card back in the envelope and moved on to the present. She plucked the ribbon off the top and gently took off the wrapping paper. It was wrapped so perfectly that she almost didn't want to ruin it. So she just plucked the ends that were held by scotch tape and pulled what was inside gently. It was a blank cardboard box, confused, she picked it up and shook it gently. She could hear a few things inside, so she set the box down and opened it. Once the box was actually freed from its confines, she stopped breathing.

Inside was a brand new Nikon D500! Her very own professional camera! Filled with childish excitement, she examined the box further. Looking at the details and features. It was a nature photographer's dream instrument. She'd seen photo galleries with many still images of animals in their natural habitat with a camera like this. She'd never dreamed she could own something like this. Upon further examination, she saw that there were also two different lenses and an SD card for its use.

Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard a knock at her door. Keeping her eyes on the box's contents, she yelled, "Come in!" She didn't even turn around when the door opened, she was so engrossed in her gift.

"Good morning, Daenerys." Speak of the devil. She turned to see him leaning against the doorjamb, sporting a proud grin on his face. "I see you've found your surprise."

"Jorah, I…" She gaped at him in, unsure how to respond. "Did you really get these for me?"

He chuckled, "Well, there's no one else staying in this room. And you're the only person I know who's named Daenerys. So, yes, I did get them for you and you alone."

"When?" She asked. "And why?"

"You told me that you wanted to be a wildlife photographer but couldn't afford a camera of your own." He shrugged his shoulders, "They came in last night. I asked for a speedy delivery so that they would arrive in time for your birthday."

"I don't know what to say."

"Your smile tells me all I need to know."

"I mean...umm…" She stammered. "I don't know how to thank you. First, I don't understand why," She stopped herself, "What I mean to say is, I don't know how to thank you."

He moved from his spot and stepped into the room. His smile ever so kind. "The emotions you're expressing is thanks enough, Daenerys. While there aren't a lot of exotic reptiles in London," he teased, "you may still find some creative inspiration."

That made her blush and she kept looking at the boxes contents to avoid looking at him. "I can't way to use it."

"I don't doubt it." He chortled and glanced at his watch. "You about ready?"

"Oh!" That's right, it was Friday and she still had to get to work. "Of course." She reluctantly put the box down and grabbed her jacket and bag. Then followed him out of the house into the car.

The drive was quiet. Aside from the classic station on the car radio. She stole quick glances at him as they continued on their way. He actually got her a professional camera. Her very own. She never imaged she'd get so lucky. He didn't have to do that. But he did it anyway.

Her thoughts wandered so far that she barely noticed that he'd pulled up in front of the cafe. As she grabbed her things, he asked her, "What time are you off today?"

"five' o'clock," She told him. "But I may pull a double and help close anyway so I can make up the extra hours I've lost at Stefano's."

"Even today?" He asked. "I'd thought you'd like to have the rest of the day to yourself."

She offered a shrug, "It's just another day."

When she opened the door, there was a loud, "Surprise!" From a number of people inside the cafe, making her jump out of her skin. Sansa, Missandei, Sophie and all of her coworkers had jumped out from hiding places when they'd shouted.

It took her a moment to gather her bearings. "What's all this!?" She demanded, shocked. The entire cafe was decorated with balloons and streamers. And above the counter was a banner that read 'Happy Birthday, Dany!'. "Is all this actually for me?"

Missandei came over and gave her a big hug. "Of course it's for you, you silly goose!"

"But," She was starting to forget how to speak, she was so surprised. "What about the cafe?"

"Oh, now don't you worry about that!" Sophie dismissed insistently. "Celebrating the birthday of one of my best employees is more important. I can afford to keep the shop closed for one day."

"The world will keep spinning if you don't work for one day, Targaryen." Another voice said coming from behind Sansa.

Daenerys gasped, "Arya, you're here too?"

She laughed, "Wouldn't miss it!"
Sansa came over and hugged Daenerys too. "It didn't take much convincing. And besides, when was the last time you've been to a party?"

"I can't remember," She admitted.

Sophie came forth too and gave her a tight hug. When she released her, she asked, "Have you had breakfast yet?"

"I...er…" Daenerys was still trying to wrap her head around what was actually happening.

Her boss grabbed her cheeks and pinched them gently. "Oh, of course, you haven't'! Come on, darling, I've made everything here today especially for you!" She let go of her face and pulled her over to where the food laid out. "Now come on, eat! Later we'll even play some games with prizes, then you open your presents, and last but not least, the cake!"

"Hang on, Sophie!" Sansa interrupted, coming towards them with an envelope in her hand. Grinning wildly at, she said, "Now, we know how you rarely ever got out to buy something for yourself. So we all opted in to put some money together for you. For you." She repeated with more emphasis. "It's £100. Not much, but it's just a little spending money for you to enjoy yourself."

Daenerys's hand flew to her mouth as tears built up in her eyes. "Everyone, thank you!" She was then engulfed in a group hug with everyone in the room. Each of them giving her a tight squeeze.

The party was amazing. As she said, Sophie had made the entire spread herself. The food was to die for and there was plenty of it. The first game had the participants balancing eggs on spoons as they walked across the room. Arya won most of the rounds of that, probably due to her fencing skills. Another game they played was to pin a tail onto a dragon picture. Later Cards Against Humanity. Then she was ushered over to the table that was covered in gift bags and wrapped presents.

Missandei got her an amethyst bracelet with matching earrings. "They match your eyes." She told Daenerys as she examined them closely. Next was Sansa's gift. Which was a new jacket, fashioned as if it were made of dragon hide with scales and everything. Along with a cure dragon onesie. A new pair of boots from Sophie. Ellen bought her a new floor-length dress that was turquoise with gold specks all over it. Then many others. And each of them had also given her a gift card in place with the birthday cards made out to her.

Finally, she was led to the cake. Another one of Sophie's masterpieces. She would make specially designed desserts for customers upon request. Even for a few weddings or events here and there. But the ones she made for Daenerys was one for the books. It was white with pink swirls on one side, had three tiers, and a cute white dragon wrapped on the cake as if it were trying to climb up to the top. It had to one of the best cakes she's ever seen Sophie make.

The party ended on a happy note. The played Cards Against Humanity for a while longer before they all realized that it was late afternoon and everyone started cleaning up. It was in the middle of the cleanup when someone knocked at the door.

Sophie was the one who answered, "I'm sorry, Sir, but we're closed for the day. Private event, you see?"

"Do forgive me," The stranger said. "But I've been to instructed to pick up Miss Targaryen."

Daenerys perked up at the man's voice and waved at Sophie, "It's alright, Sophie, let him in." When her boss stepped aside for the man to enter, Daenerys greeted him. "Hi, Davos. I didn't know you were picking me up."

He cleared his throat, "Yes, Mr. Mormont has been assigned to help with a case and locked himself in his study to concentrate. So he's asked that I come and collect you after your...shift?" He looked around at the decorations and the mess we'd all made. "I hope I'm not interrupting."

"Not at all, Davos," She said as she swept the floor. "It turns out that this was all for me!"

That made him smile, "Well it looks like it was a nice shindig."

"I'll drink to that!" Sansa said as she pulled down some streamers.

"No alcohol in my cafe!" Sophie said with a stern voice as she tried not to smile.

Sansa pouted. "You're no fun!"

Missandei went to Daenerys with the remainder of the cake wrapped up in her hands. "Why don't you go on home, Dany? We can take care of the rest here."

"I can't let you clean this by yourselves." She responded. "You did this all for me."

"And we can clean it for you too." her friend insisted. "Go on. There's more than enough sets of hands here. Not to mention that we're almost done anyway. We'll be fine."

"Go home and enjoy the rest of your evening," Arya said.

"But I can still—"

"Go, woman!" They all said.

She blinked. "Alright, I'm going then!"

Davos came to stand next to her. "Can I help you take anything to the car, Miss?"

"Yes please," She said, finally accepting defeat and followed him to the car.

"Thank you for helping me with my things, Davos." She said as they carried her presents up to the house.

"Not at all, Ma'am," He told her with a smile. "Mr. Mormant informed me that it was your birthday today. Happy Birthday."

There wasn't a mean bone in this man's body. "That's sweet, Davos, thank you."

He smiled as his cheeks flushed slightly. "Here, I'll help you take these up to your room." they both made their way up to her floor and he graciously put all of her things on the ground by the closet. "Can I get you anything?"

Her hand landed on her lower abdomen, "Oh, Gods, no thank you, Davos. I fear that Sophie filled me to the brim with her delicious food. I probably won't need to ear for a week."

He laughed gently, "Then I shall take my leave then. I'll put your cake in the refrigerator."

She smiled, grateful, "Thank you, Davos. Goodnight,"

"Goodnight, Ma'am," Then he left her to herself.

But before she tackled her new pile of goodies, she flopped onto her bed with a loud sigh. This had to be the best birthday she's ever had! It was so touching to see everyone that she saw on a near-daily basis come together and made this day especially for her. She pulled out her phone to scroll through the pictures that were taken from the party. Each one was filled with smiles and laughter. A few selfies. Even some videos of the games they'd played and one of her blowing out the candles on her cake.

She wanted to look at some more, but the battery icon began to turn red, so she plugged it into the charger and let it sit. She contemplated which one of her new presents she wanted to play with first. The coloring in the sky told her that the sun was setting. Disappointed that she'd miss the chance to capture it due to her phone's low battery.

Then she remembered, her new camera. The Nikon D500! Sod her phone's camera! Mind made up, she hopped off the bed and went to where she'd left it that morning. She took it out of its box and already started putting together from the lense to the battery, praying that it didn't need a charge too. Luckily it didn't, but it wasn't fully charged either. A little less than half. Which was more than what she needed.

She played with the F-stop and ISO settings as she searched for a good window to take the picture when she passed Jorah's study. Only to discover that it was open. Biting her lip, she leaned against the door and poked her head in to see what he was doing.

He wasn't at his desk. Odd. Nor was he in the room. She almost gave up until she spotted him leaning back against the balcony outside the open french doors. He was a sight. The top buttons of his shirt were undone, his hair unkempt as it swayed in the breeze. Both his hands were on either side one the stone railing. He didn't notice her at first. His stare was somewhere far away. Maybe even another plane of existence. But with the glow of the sunset behind him, it was as if he were a piece of sculpted art come to life.

Her hands moved on their own accord. Lifting the camera to her eyes to peep into the viewfinder. She adjusted the focus and features a little more until she was satisfied with her angle. Then her finger bent down and pressed the shutter button. Capturing the moment.

The sound of the shutter gave away her position, startling her. And Jorah. He broke away from his thoughts and turned to see what the noise was. When he saw her looking guiltily at him from behind her camera lens, the tense expression melted from his features into that of a satisfied smile.

"I see you like your present," he observed.

Shy, she lowered the camera and avoided looking at him. "I'm sorry. I don't know what I was thinking."

"Don't be," He assured her as he straightened and came into the office, closing the doors behind him. He waved her in, "Please, come in and take a seat. I'm honored to be one of your subjects."

She bit her lip, unsure, but still took a seat on the couch by his whiteboard. "I still should have asked." When she looked up she nearly jumped out of her skin.

He was directly in front of her now. Kneeling at her level. When had he gotten so close? "I realized that I forgot to say something earlier."

His voice held a low timbre to it, it made her heart race. "What would that be?"

He moved so that their noses were touching, his breath on her lips. "Happy Birthday, Daenerys." And he kissed her.

Hi, everyone! I've been doing nothing but writing for the last few days due to the Covid-19 outbreak putting me on unpaid leave. So hopefully I can make the best of this and update my stories as much as I can before things go back to normal. Thanks for your patience!
