* An interesting meal *
The delicious smell of Mrs Weasley's chocolate pie invaded the house as Ron and Hermione downed the stairs to have a family dinner. They had just finished bathing their 3-month-old daughter and were eager to eat something with the whole family. Charlie was going back to Romania the following day, so Mrs Weasley had decided to make that dinner extra special. They all sat around the table outside and were about to start eating when baby Belle started to cry. Instantly, Hermione picked the baby up from her stroller, lifted up her shirt a little and got the baby closer to her breast as Ron gently put a cloth between the baby's head and Hermione's breast and helped her adjust the little girl in her mother's arms. Belle latched in a second and Hermione let out a relieved sighed. Everyone but Ron was looking at her, a bit shocked by the whole scene.
"Hermione, dear, wouldn't you be more comfortable feeding her on the couch inside?" Mrs Weasley suggested.
"It's fine, Mrs Weasley. Really." Hermione said as she picked up her fork to eat a bit of shepherd's pie.
"But... wouldn't you feel more..." Bill started
"or wouldn't you want more..." Charlie continued
"privacy to do that?" Percy finished, as if disgusted by the scene in front of him.
"Why would I want that? It's not like I'm doing anything indecent." Hermione answered back.
"You have your boob out, are you aware of that?" George said, shocked by her reaction. Ron sighed, annoyed.
"Yes, George. I'm aware of that! That's how breastfeeding works, actually." Hermione said, a bit exasperated by the whole situation.
"Hermione, darling. Breastfeeding is a very private moment between mother and child. That's why we're suggesting that, maybe, you would want to be alone with her in a more private place." Mrs. Weasley said, kindly.
"Well, thank you, Mrs. Weasley, but I'm fine. Honestly, is it that awkward and upsetting to you all to see me breastfeeding while we eat?" Hermione asked, annoyed. They all looked at each other for a minute, silently. "Besides, I don't want to move her now. It won't be good for her digestion, and I'm really starving." Hermione added, picking up her fork and taking another bite of her food. Mrs. Weasley was about to answer back when Ron cut her in.
"Mom, my daughter wants to have dinner just as much as the rest of us. If Hermione's fine with breastfeeding her here with all of us around, then so should you all, ok?" Ron said, defensively.
Nobody else said anything. They all went back to their eating in an awkward silence. Ron looked at Charlie and started making conversation with him about his trip to break the silence, and gradually, the usual chit chattering went back to the table.
As Hermione laid Belle back in her stroller, something odd happened. Just as Ron mentioned Mrs. Weasley's chocolate pie, the dessert in question started to float around the table.
"So funny, Ron!" Ginny said sarcastically. Ron looked at her, annoyed.
"It's not me!" he defended himself
"You could have waited until I picked up all the plates to accio it, Ronald." Mrs. Weasley reproached. Ron looked at her, a shocked look in his face.
"It's NOT ME!" he said again, raising his voice.
As everyone else started to tell Ron off, Hermione noticed her daughter's fixed sight on the pie and her giggles. She put two and two together and grabbed Ron's wrist. He looked at her, shocked.
"What?" he asked, beyond annoyed.
"I know it's not you who's doing that." she said. He looked back at her.
"Then who...?" he asked as she leaned her head towards their baby. Ron sighed. "Bloody hell! That's bloody fantastic!" he shouted. Everyone got quiet and looked at him. Hermione gave him a stern look. "I thought she only did that with her bottle and toys." he said later.
"Well, apparently, she decided to try on bigger things." she answered back.
"Just like her mother." he said, in a tone that didn't sound that pleased.
"and what's THAT supposed to mean?" Hermione demanded.
"You knew all the bloody semester before we were halfway through it at school!" Ron said.
"And what's wrong with that?" she asked. Neither of them realized the pie started to shake in the air.
"Nobody does that!" he shouted.
"Well, I did!" she shouted back. In that minute, the pie fell on the table, splashing in every direction, and little Belle broke down into tears. Hermione quickly got up, picked the baby up in her arms and walked away. Ron sighed, got up and followed her.
"I'm... I'm sorry... I didn't mean..." he started when he approached her.
"Is it that bad that she's like me?" she asked, her voice breaking. Belle was just sobbing by now, resting her head on her mother's shoulder. Ron looked at her and smiled a bit.
"It's bloody fantastic that she's like you." he said.
"didn't sound like it before." she snorted. He sighed.
"I didn't mean it that way. I was... I was frustrated with my family reacting as they did with you breastfeeding and then the bloody pie. I just... I lost it." he said. She just nodded.
"You know why I learnt everything beforehand?" she asked. He shook his head. "You knew you were a wizard since you were born. I didn't know it till I was 11. And when I did, when I could finally explain why the weird things happened around me, why I felt so different around everyone else, I just... I felt so behind! And if I was going to go to a magic school, I should at least learn to do some magic so I wouldn't look that... dumb." she explained.
"You could never look dumb, Mione." he said, his voice softening.
"Well, I thought I would. So I learnt everything I could and more, trying to catch up with everything I should have known in my 11 years of life." she said. He went and wrapped his arm around her shoulders.
"You were always way ahead of everyone back then and even now." he started. "I'm more than proud that she gets to be like you more and more every single day. I thank Merlin for that. I'm proud of you, Hermione. Always." he said. She upped her head to him and smiled, then kissed her.
"Well, one good thing about all these is that, when we tell everyone our news, they can't say they don't believe us. They just saw everything with their eyes." he said. Hermione smiled and they went back to the table.
"So..." Ron started as everyone looked at them.
"Ron was telling the truth. He wasn't levitating the pie." Hermione said.
"Then who was it?" Harry asked as Ron and Hermione looked at the little baby in her mother's arms.
"She did." Ron said, kissing the baby's head.
"That's impossible! That's..." Percy started.
"Uncommon, yes. But lately, kids of around 1 year, year and a half, have been reported to show their first signs of magic. The Ministry is actually thinking about lowering the average age to 2." Hermione explained.
"But she's... what?... 3 months?" George asked.
"She's Hermione's daughter, for Merlin's sake! Does that surprise you?" Ginny asked, smiling. Everyone else looked at them as Belle's blanket floated away from her stroller. "See? she's doing it again! Look at her eyes fixed on that thing!" Ginny said. She had also noticed Belle mischievous smile and her eyes following the floating pink blanket coming to her.
"So... We have a new reason to celebrate tonight. Baby's first magic! It's so exciting!" Mrs. Weasley exclaimed as she went and hugged Ron and Hermione.
Everyone looked at them. It had been quite an interesting meal at the Weasley house.
