In It Together
James/Sirius/Remus
"He's awake!"
"Is he okay?"
Remus opened his eyes, wincing at the light. His body hurt and two men sat by his bed, both watching him intently.
Two strangers.
"What happened?" he asked, frowning. "Are you a doctor?" It was obvious that he was in a hospital room, but he couldn't think of any other reason why the strangers would be there. "Or you?"
The man with glasses looked worried and glanced at the other man. But the other stranger didn't notice. Instead his lips curved up into a smirk. "We can be if you want us to be," he murmured in a voice that sent shivers through Remus' body. "We haven't played doctor yet."
"I… I think you should leave," Remus said. It didn't matter that the man looked like a model or a rockstar. He was in hospital and this wasn't appropriate.
The man leaned back as though he had been burnt. "I'm sorry, love," he said quickly, the smile fading. "I didn't mean to… I was just joking. You know that, right?"
"Who are you?" Remus asked softly. His gaze darted between the both of them. "Did anyone call my mum because I don't want her to worry if I'm late home." He glanced around. "How long have I been in hospital?"
The two men were silent for a long moment.
"Remus, we—"
"My name is James," the other man said. "This is Sirius. Sirius is going to call your mum now, okay? I'll get a doctor if you can wait here."
Remus nodded. His mum worried about him a lot. "Thank you."
"James?" Sirius asked uncertainly. "What is going on?"
"We'll talk outside," James insisted softly. "Come on, love."
"We can't leave Remus alone," Sirius said stubbornly.
"We need to talk," James insisted firmly. "Sirius, trust me, okay?"
Sirius looked desperately towards Remus as though his friend would defend him. When Remus didn't answer, he sighed softly. "If it's what's best for Remus," he said reluctantly. He stood up. "I'll be right back, Darling." He turned towards the door.
"He's a bit overfriendly, isn't he?" Remus asked when Sirius was out of earshot.
James chuckled. "You have no idea," he replied Remus could hear an undertone of sadness in his voice. "That's how he is."
...oOo...
"Darling," Hope said, rushing through the door. Her scarf was unwinding from around her neck, almost getting caught in the door as it closed, but Sirius and James had followed her, making sure to stop her from hurting herself.
"What are they doing here?" Remus murmured as his mother approached. He had been considering the two men for the last few hours and had determined that he had perhaps been in an accident, hence the hospital bed, and that these men had maybe helped him. It was his preferred theory at the moment.
Hope paused. "I… I'd have thought you would have wanted them here," she said.
"I don't know who they are," Remus insisted. "Mum, can we just go home?"
Hope turned slowly. "Sirius?"
"He doesn't remember us," Sirius helpfully informed her, looking devastated at the confession. "Fix him, Mum."
Remus frowned. How was this man so familiar with his mother that he called her mum? He looked towards the more rational of the two, but James had nothing to say.
"Remus my dear, how old are you?" Hope asked.
"Eighteen," Remus replied. The doctor had asked him a lot of confusing questions too, like what the date was and such. "Why?"
Hope moved closer to the bed. "Sweetheart, you're twenty-six," she told him softly. "You've been in an accident and I think it may have made you a little forgetful. But you're not eighteen, you're married and everything."
Remus glanced down at his hands, noticing the ring for the first time. It was a beautiful ring, with two metals twisting around each other loosely.
"Who to?"
Hope turned. "James and Sirius of course," she insisted. "You met them at University shortly after you turned…" she trailed off, looking towards the pair for help.
James walked over and took his previous seat and Sirius came to stand next to him. "Here," James murmured, handing over a framed picture.
Remus slowly reached for it, his hands shaking. What his mother claimed didn't make sense in the slightest. He couldn't be in his twenties, and he most certainly couldn't be married. Sirius and James were gorgeous and Remus would never be able to speak to men like them.
His eyes moved to the picture and he stared for a long time, taking in all of the details. Sirius stood in the middle, his arms holding Remus tightly, clinging to him as though Sirius was afraid to let go. James' hold was more gentle but there was something about his stance that made him appear to be protective over the pair next to him.
"Remus, whether you remember us or not, we both love you," James said softly. "The doctor said that your memory is gone but it could come back. We just need something to trigger it."
Remus stared at the picture, taking in the smile on his face. This Remus looked older, but he looked like he had everything he ever wanted.
"Tell me," Remus murmured. "Trigger it. Fix me."
James shook his head. "It's not that easy," he said.
"But we've got a plan," Sirius insisted, reaching out and taking Remus' hand in his. Remus resisted the urge to pull his hand away - this was his husband. He had made vows to be with these two men forever.
"What's the plan?" Remus asked.
"If your mind put you back at eighteen… well, we met you at eighteen," Sirius insisted. "It means you're the person you were when we met at Uni. That's the person we fell in love with, the man who fell in love with us. So what I suggest is that we start from the beginning."
"We recreate our first date," James continued. "We take you to the places that mean something to the three of us. Your memories might never come back, Remus, but it just means we all get to fall in love all over again. But we can only do this if you want to. We'll give you that choice."
Remus looked between the men, before glancing at the picture and then to his mum. "Am I happy?" he asked.
"I've never seen you happier," Hope assured him. "You love them both more than anything and they'd do anything for you, they love you just as much. I suggest you give them a chance."
Remus nodded his head. He trusted his mum.
"I need a few days," he said, looking back at the men. "This is all a lot to take in. I'm missing years. I… Give me a week and… I just need to get my head around this. The last thing I remember was enrolling in University and the entirety of this hasn't quite hit me yet. But I'm not ready to go from that to being a married man with two husbands and…"
"And a dog and a bookshop that we all run together," James offered softly.
"Yes, all of that," Remus agreed, his voice rising as panic began to set in. "One week. I just need to be alone with my thoughts. I… I need more pictures. I need to understand…"
"Remus," Sirius began desperately.
"Sirius, this isn't about us," James said firmly. "We're going to go home and get Remus' things, his favourite things and some photos and things that matter. We'll drop them today and we'll arrange the first date for next week Saturday."
Sirius nodded. "I can get the stuff," he said, clearly feeling lost and wanting to be useful. "I'll have the bag ready soon. It's just… a week away is forever. We've had to spend the last few nights without Remus with us and it's been hell." He straightened up and took a deep breath. "But Remus needs us," he reminded himself.
He reached for Remus' hand, lifting it to his lips. "Until next week, love."
...oOo...
Remus' mum took his bag back to the flat above the bookshop. Remus wasn't ready to go there yet, so when the hospital discharged him, he went straight to the park.
James and Sirius had messaged. They were there already waiting for him, and Remus was so nervous. Though they were all married, it felt to him like a first date. He had never been good at first dates.
He walked through the park, looking out for them. He didn't spot them until he passed a copse of trees. A large blanket was spread out and several containers covered the blanket.
"This is the first date of many," James said, standing up and approaching him. "We promised you that we'd be there in sickness and in health. So we're going to get through this together. Even if your memory never comes back, we're here for you."
Remus smiled. The items hadn't triggered his memories in the slightest, but having looked at the assortment of stuffed toys, receipts and tickets to various shows and many photographs, he saw someone who had a wonderful life and was very happy.
He wanted that life.
"And even if I don't remember it, I'm here for us too," he replied, taking a seat on the blanket next to Sirius.
James sat down on his other side and Remus felt his nerves shifting. Something told him this was where he was supposed to be.
