CHAPTER TWO
Author's note: In chapter one, there were several mistakes. Although I proof the chapter, I didn't catch them until I read the published version. 1. Heidt's rank came out as lieutenant in one sentence. 2. Rick's full first name should have been on his promotion orders. 3 Several references to Starfleet should just have read Fleet. 4. Vain, not rain. 5. In the poem rich red lips. 6. Kate not Allison.
Aboard the C.S.S. Foxfire, Planetary orbit, Alpha Centauri, Friday, 16 August 2453. 13:00 hours.
Two hours and we'll be back on the ground. Lieutenant Kate Beckett thought. It will be wonderful. I'll see Uncle Alex and Aunt Marlene. After nearly eight months in space, with only a couple of stops at star bases, Kate longed for open skies and solid ground
As chief medical officer on a small starship, she'd been very busy. The whole crew, however, was frustrated. They'd been unable to complete their exploration mission, being turned back by a Commonwealth patrol cruiser, short of the frontier. Kate was a tall, aristocratic, classic Irish beauty. Long, wavy dark hair framed a delicate face. She had large hazel eyes, tending to green a straight nose and full lips that wore a smile often. Her long, elegant legs supported a lithe perfectly proportioned figure. Most men never got past her physical beauty to the brilliant mind inside. Her wit punctured many an inflated ego.
The door to the cabin she shared with Lieutenant Lanie Parish cycled open and Lanie walked in. "Hey, Kate. I can't wait to get back. I hear that there will be a welcome home party and dance at the officer's club. Plan to go?"
"Of course, I plan to go! Fresh food, music and dancing, I wouldn't miss it for the world!"
As she said it, her mind flashed back to the night of the embassy ball and the handsome Marine officer of her last dance. He wasn't her only partner, that night but the only one to stick in her mind.
The best dancer she'd ever danced with, intelligent and well spoken, too. "I wonder if I impressed you as much as you did me, Captain Castle. Then she had a thought that both surprised and embarrassed her. "I wonder if you're as good in bed as you are on the dance floor."
Lanie was a short, brown-eyed dark-skinned brunette. Just shy of being plump she had to work at keeping her figure in shape. She envied Kate her high metabolism. She was outgoing and a laugh always seemed to be bubbling just under the surface. She and Kate had been close friends since the early days with the fleet.
Her looks and bubbly personality caused many people to assume she was an airhead.
She wasn't. She was almost as good a doctor as Kate and fiercely protective of her friend, as Kate usually ignored the jealousy she often aroused in other women.
"What are you blushing about, Kate?"
"I am not blushing!" Kate 's face was faintly flushed."
Lanie 's merry laugh filled the room. "Yes, you are. Thinking about getting some hot guy in bed when we get back, aren't you?"
"Lanie, stop that. I was not thinking about that!"
"Yes, you were! I sure have been and you're no more a lesbian than I am. And not sexless like Lieutenant Sereth, either!" (Lieutenant Sereth was the ship's Tolvarian biologist.)
"Oh alright, yes I was. That's perfectly normal!"
"I know that. It's about time that you admitted it. Thinking of any one special?"
"Of course, not I don't know anyone that well!" Then Kate slumped. "I'm in trouble, Lanie. Do you remember that Marine Captain that I danced with, the big, handsome one?"
Sure, I do."
"Well it has been almost eight months. I only had one dance, a few minutes with him and I can't get him out of my mind! I wonder what would have happened if he hadn't been with that Centauran woman! Lanie, I'm a doctor, not some foolish school girl!"
"Maybe it's love at first sight."
"Don't be ridiculous, Lanie. Love at first sight doesn't exist. I'm not foolish enough to believe in a silly myth. You have to know someone to love them"
"Well, then its lust at first sight! Good old sexual desire. I'd jump that man's bones if I had the chance!"
"We'll be home in a couple of hours, Kate. Why don't you see what you can find out about him?"
"Maybe I will. He was assigned as the embassy guard commander. That's a three-year tour."
"Then he should still be there. Who knows, there really might be something there."
"He might still be with that woman."
"If he is, that solves your problem, doesn't it? If he isn't, get him into bed as fast as you can."
"Get your mind off that, Lanie. I just got a message from the surface. Aunt Marlene expects us for dinner tonight. She promised Corned beef, roasted potatoes and chocolate cheesecake!"
"OOOH! Chocolate cheesecake, don't let me eat more than one piece, no matter how I beg!"
Commonwealth Embassy, Alpha Centauri, 16 August, 2453 16:30 hours.
Kate Beckett walked into the Commonwealth Embassy. A uniformed Marine sergeant said, "May I help you Lieutenant?"
"I'm Lieutenant Katherine Beckett. I'd like to speak with the Guard company commander, if he's available."
"Just a moment Lieutenant, I'll see if she's got an opening" "She?" Kate thought.
"Go on back, Lieutenant, straight down the hallway, third door on your left."
"Thank you, Sergeant."
Kate stopped at the door marked Company Commander. She pressed a button.
"Enter." A pleasant female voice called out. Kate entered the room. The woman behind the desk said, "I'm Captain Alana Forrester, Lieutenant, what can I do for you?"
"I'm Kate Beckett, I just got in, off the Foxfire. I'm looking for Captain Castle, he was guard commander when we left."
"I relieved a Major Castle."
"That has to be a strange coincidence. Captain Castle had only been a captain about six months." Kate said.
"I thought he looked awfully young to be a major, tall, and handsome as the devil, sexy voice?"
"That sounds like him
"Was his name Richard?"
"That's it!"
"Do you know what happened to him?"
"No, it was all very quick. He was into something with General Frasier."
"Thank you, Captain,"
Commonwealth Embassy, Karolain City, Alpha Centauri, 17:30 hours.
A staff car pulled up in front of the embassy, where Kate and Lanie were waiting. Kate was surprised to see that it was flying the single pip in a square on the blue pennant of a Starfleet Commodore rather than the two-starred red pennant of a Marine Major General.
The driver got out and opened the rear door for them. "Good evening, ladies." Kate instantly recognized the baritone. "Jake! She exclaimed. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm coming to pick you up, what else?"
"Don't be a smart-ass, you know what I mean."
"I'm assigned here. I'm commander of the new repair and overhaul base. We have a special refit program, currently classified."
"That's wonderful news! Lanie and I will be assigned to the base hospital, here for at least a few months. I'll get to see you, quite often."
"I've got more good news. Pete and Vic are both assigned here. They're due in, next week."
Kate was excited. "That means the whole family will be here, for Christmas!
Even the twins will be on leave." General Frasier's sons, Mike and Sean were first classmen at the academy and would graduate next year.
"We'd better get going," Jake said. Marlene is waiting for us.
They arrived at the Frasier's house to find everyone waiting on the front porch.
Marlene stepped forward, first and hugged Kate. "I'm so happy that you're home safe, Kate." She hugged Lanie too. "Welcome to our home, Lanie." The General hugged Kate and shook Lanie 's hand. "Welcome home."
Kate kissed both. "I love you both. I'm so happy to be here."
Lanie said, "Thank you, for the welcome."
"You'll be staying with us, I hope."
Marlene said. "We have plenty of room and there's no sense paying for the B.O.Q."
"Thank you! If it were no trouble, I'd love to. The family atmosphere is something I've missed." Lanie said.
"No trouble, at all. This big old house gets lonely at times."
A slim, pretty redhead who Kate had never seen before came out of the house.
"I've got another surprise for you, Kate." Jake said. "I'd like you to meet my fiancé,
Felicia Grayson, Felicia, my sister, Kate." A huge smile spread over her face as Kate stepped forward. "I am so happy to meet you. I have wanted a sister for years.
And someone finally decided to improve my brother's life. Welcome."
Felicia returned the smile with one of her own. "I'm happy to meet you as well. Jake has told me so much about you."
After a delicious supper, the Women gathered in the living room while the general, Jake and their aides adjourned to the study.
"How did you happen to meet Jake?" Kate asked Felicia.
"I'm a civilian employee of Starfleet, a GS-15, and Stress analyst in space frames. We met on Earth a couple of years ago,
I was consulting on a special project where he was chief engineer. He asked me to dinner and it went from there. The two women talked a while longer, each finding that they liked the other.
"We've been waiting until you got back, Felicia said. All the plans are in place; we only need to set the date. I'd like to go for two weeks from tomorrow. I'd like you to be one of my bride's maids."
"I will be very happy to be part of your wedding."
"Thank you, Kate, the bride's maid's dresses will be silver-gray. Marlene will take you to the shop that has the pattern."
Then Marlene said, "Are you ready for the party, tomorrow night?"
"I'm more than ready but I want to go shopping tomorrow. I want a nice party dress besides the bride's maid dress. I've spent enough time in uniform these last few months."
" If you go early enough, there's something you might enjoy, before the party."
"What's that?"
"Are you familiar with the artist Julia Caldwell?"
"Of course, what cultured person isn't?"
"She's opened a gallery right here in Karolain city." I've got a ticket, if you'd like to use it."
"I'd love to, but what about you?" "I've already seen it.
Alex and I were invited to a gala opening. It's magnificent! We even met her. She's the sweetest person. You'd never believe that she's a celebrity."
"Aunt Marlene, can I ask you a question?"
"Of course, you can, what is it?"
"Do you remember Rick Castle?"
"Of course, I do, that young man would be very hard to forget. What about him?"
"I heard that he's been promoted major. Do you know what happened to him?"
"No, I don't, only that he's still here, somewhere. You'll have to ask Alex, it's all very hush-hush."
Two Moons street. Karolain city, 11:00 hours, 17 August 2453
Marlene stopped the car and said, "I'll come back and get you, whenever you're ready. Just call me."
"I will Thank you." Lanie had decided to shop for her dress at the Base Exchange, it was less expensive. Kate entered a shop called Elegant Allure.
A stylishly dressed woman said, "May I help you, Lieutenant?"
"My name is Katherine Beckett. I'm here to be fitted for my bride's maid dress for the Beckett-Grayson wedding. I am also looking for a nice party dress and a casual dressy outfit for this afternoon."
"I think that we have the perfect ensembles for you. Please come to our fitting room and remove your uniform. As Kate stood, clad only in her panties and bra, the saleswoman said, "You have an almost perfect figure, Lieutenant. You will be very easy to work with.
Let's get you fitted for the bride's maid dress, first, then we'll see to your other needs.
With your coloring, I think that deep green or royal blue would do well for you. Let me show you. She came in with a deep green tunic that had a deep v- neck a flared collar and long sleeves. Black pants and calf high, high heeled boots. Kate tried the ensemble on.
The saleswoman projected a hologram that let Kate see herself from all angles. "I'll take it." She said. The woman than produced a royal blue evening dress. The skirt ended just above the knee, it was a flared skirt and fitted bodice and that left the shoulders bare.
The dress was made of spider-silk that shimmered softly. "I'll take this too. Do you have matching pumps?" "Yes, we do." Kate also selected some lacy undergarments and hose. "I'll wear the casual outfit; can you have the evening wear and uniform delivered to my residence, this afternoon?" "It will be our pleasure to do so." "Thank you."
"Thank you, Lieutenant. Every woman who sees you tonight will be so envious and want to know where you purchased it."
Kate left the shop, one thousand credits less in her account, but very pleased with her purchases. After all, she had quite a bit of pay saved.
She stopped for a light lunch. After the fitting, it had taken her less than an hour to select her clothing. She didn't particularly like shopping and was a decisive person.
After eating, she strolled along Two Moons street, headed for the gallery.
She saw a sign that read Timeless Treasures. There was a small display of jewelry in the window. Intrigued, she entered. An elderly gentleman came out of the back. "May I help you, Young Lady?"
"Yes please. There is an exquisite pair of earrings in the window.
May I see them?"
"Of course," He got the earrings. They were a tiny pair of crystal Unicorns with golden horns and hooves. The hooks were 24 carat gold.
He held them up to the light. They sparkled and reflected the light in rainbow patterns.
"Yes, they suit you. Not everyone can own these." The artist never duplicates her work."
"They are lovely. How much are they?"
"They are not half as lovely as you. I will sell them to you for 100 credits." "They are worth at least twice that or more!"
"I am retired and quite comfortable. I only keep the shop open for my own pleasure.
I love the smiles of beautiful women. Please take these and give me one of yours."
Kate smiled, leaned down and kissed the old man. "Thank you." She paid him.
"Now put these on and go thrill some young man's heart."
Kate took the ticket out of her purse and began looking for the gallery. She could have used the GPS and map feature on her phone, but that would have taken some of the fun out of exploring. Just as she spotted the sign, a tall young man came out of the door. Although in a blue civilian jacket over gray trousers she had no trouble recognizing Rick Castle. He carried a package in his left hand.
She called out. Richard, Richard Castle! He turned. At first, he didn't recognize this stunningly beautiful woman. "Don't you remember me?" The voice did it.
"Lieutenant Beckett?"
"Yes, but since we're both off duty, couldn't we use our Christian names?"
"Welcome back Kate. How was the voyage?"
"Long and frustrating, we couldn't accomplish our mission."
"I'm sorry to hear that but I'm glad that you're back, safely."
"I see that you just came out of the art gallery. Is that a painting you have?"
"Yes, a small seascape done in oils."
"May I please see it?" One rarely sees oils these days."
Rick unwrapped the painting.
Kate gasped. "Don't tell me that's a genuine Caldwell!"
Rick 's smart mouth ran away with him. "Okay, I won't tell you that it's a genuine Caldwell!"
A tall, beautiful woman stepped through the door and slapped Rick lightly on the top of his head. "Richard Alexander Castle, Behave yourself! Introduce me to your friend."
Glaring at her, he said, Kate, Julia. Julia, Kate. Bye!"
"Stop right there, Rick! If this uncouth brother of mine won't introduce us properly, I will. I'm Julia Castle Caldwell." Kate stared.
"Julia Caldwell, the artist? You're Rick 's sister?"
"Right on both counts, though, now, I'm not sure that I want to admit being related to the barbarian!
"Hey, Julie, be fair. I'm under time constraints. I promised to meet Del at the lake, at a specific time. I will not be late!"
"So? That's still no excuse to be rude!" Rick sighed.
"That's true. My apologies, Kate"
"That's quite all right. I have three brothers. I understand."
"Thank you. Now I really need to go."
At that moment, Jason Caldwell came out of the gallery. "Good afternoon. MS?"
"Kate Beckett, my husband, Jason Caldwell." Julia said.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Caldwell."
"It's Commander Caldwell, Judge Advocate." Rick said"
"Hey, Rick, did you hear about the jet boat race at the lake?"
"Yes, I heard."
At the look on Julia's face, Jason immediately knew he'd stepped in it!
"Jet boat race, you're going to a race?"
"Yes, I am, so what?"
"So, what? You've never been a spectator, in your life! You're in the race, aren't you?" "Yes, I'm on the crew."
"Rick, you can't lie to me, you never could. You're driving, aren't you?"
"Del lost his pilot. Idiot got drunk, fell and broke his arm. Somebody has to drive or Del loses a lot of money."
"And it has to be you!"
"Why not? I am a pilot and Del is my best friend."
"You could be killed, is why not!"
"Don't be silly, Julie. Nobody's been killed in 50 years. More people die in accidents, every day."
"What time is the race?
It's at 15:00 hours, why?"
"If it's as safe as you say it is, get us some tickets. We'll come and watch."
"Why do you want to do that? You're not into sports, especially racing."
"You say it's not that dangerous. So, it will be fun to see how you do. Besides, you know that Jason will love it."
"MS Beckett, would you like to watch a race?"
"Yes, I would but there is a dinner-dance at the officer's club, starting at 19:30. My uncle is hosting it. I can't miss that.
I would be pleased if you would call me Kate."
"I will be glad to, if you call me Julie. I'm not much for formality. The party is in the officer's club. You're an officer?"
"Yes, I'm a lieutenant, a fleet surgeon."
"Jason, how long is this race?"
"About an hour and a half." "Kate, if we promise to get you home in time to get ready for the dance, would you like to come?"
"Yes, I would, it would be something very different for me."
Rick said, "We have to get ready for the race, now I have to go! Kate, it was nice to see you. Enjoy the party."
"Thank you, Rick, I shall."
Julia said, "Kate, I'm really sorry about Rick. He's usually so polite but when he decides that he wants to do something, he just does it. There's no stopping him.
Unfortunately, what he considers fun scares the hell out of most of us."
Kate said, "Don't worry, as I said, I have three brothers. They're stubborn too.
Oh, damn it! I wish that I'd thought to invite Rick to the party. I had one dance with him, at the embassy ball. I love to dance and I've never danced with anyone as good as he is, except my instructors."
"That's part and parcel of my brother. Whatever he puts his mind to, he is very good at."
"I see that you have a ticket for the gallery. Would you like a quick tour now or should we give you another ticket for a later date?"
"I don't think there's time enough for a tour that I would enjoy."
"I have another Idea. Are your busy tomorrow?"
"No, I'm not, why?"
"I would really like to get to know you. I'm something of an empath and I feel that you and I can be great friends.
"The gallery is closed tomorrow. After church, would you like to have lunch with us and I will give you a personal tour. You can take as long as you want."
"What a lovely idea! You know, I'm Irish with a bit O' the Fey as they say. I too feel that you and I are destined to be very close friends." "It's settled then. We'll meet at the base chapel."
Lake Merseiu, 14:50 hours, August 17, 2453
Jason Caldwell was grinning like the Cheshire cat as he entered the grandstands, escorting two of the loveliest ladies on the planet. Although not related, Kate and Julia looked enough alike to be sisters or cousins. Both were tall lithe and fair-skinned with stunning figures. They were even dressed in similar fashion. Julia in deep purple over gray to Kate 's green over black. They settled in the first-class section, "Which one is their boat?" Julia asked. Jason opened a holographic program.
"The number 14 boat."
The jet-boats looked like wingless aerospace fighters with narrow hulls at the bottom.
The 14 boat was painted in Kevan house colors of crimson over black. The legend, "Del's Darling" was painted in gold. Del and Rick stood beside the boat, dressed in crimson racing suits with black helmets held under their arms.
"The boats don't ride on their hulls when they get up to speed," Jason said. "They are hydrofoils." The announcer's voice came over the ear buds they were wearing. "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the final race of the 2453 season. We hope that you will enjoy the thrilling spectacle of daring young men, piloting their boats at well over one thousand kilometers per hour, just millimeters above the water."
A yellow flare arched out over the lake. "Gentlemen, start your engines!" The roar of over one hundred jet engines starting up roared out. As they reached a crescendo, a green flare was fired. In seconds, the lake was filled with colorful boats starting the course
On the third lap, a long spurt of flame vented from one boat's engine compartment.
The crew capsule ejected, just seconds before the boat exploded, the debris disabling two other boats.
The second accident occurred when a boat canted too far over and the over-stressed hydrofoil snapped off. The boat hit the water, hard. The canopy flew off, but the armored crew compartment held and the crew swam to safety.
The worst accident occurred right in front of the stands. A pure black boat tried to pass the leader, but cut it too close and the boats collided. Both boats crashed to the water and the crew capsules floated free. This time the race was halted, while rescue boats went after the crews. "Ladies and Gentlemen, we regret the brief halt, but we are happy to report that both crews have been brought to safety, with only minor to moderate injuries.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, as we enter the final lap of the race, the standings are as follows.
Last year's winner, Baron Voltoon Arnautes, in the number one boat is leading; in second place is Lavance Lakanior in the 31 boat and in third, Wait! The number 14 boat is making a bid!" Rick was rapidly closing on the leader. The leader moved to block the way. Rick turned the boat hard to starboard and laid the boat so far over that the stabilizer threw up a rooster tail. He cut in the after burner and roared into the lead,
Righting the boat and crossing the finish line a scant 10 meters in front of the second-place boat.
"What does that person think he is a fighter pilot?" Asked the man seated next to Jason.
"He is a fighter pilot," Jason said, That's Major Castle of the Fleet Marines!"
Grinning, Del and Rick accepted their trophy and winnings from the race officials.
Emerging from the dressing rooms about 15 minutes later, Rick was laughing and slapping Del on the back. Julia said," Kate will you excuse me for a few minutes, please?" "Certainly." "Del, give us a few minutes."
"What's wrong, Julie?"
Seething, Julia said;
"You know damn well what's wrong! Perfectly safe is it?"
"Hey, I never said it was perfectly safe, but no one got killed or even seriously injured and we won!"
"No, no one was killed, but what about that last stunt of yours? You had no margin for error. You could easily have been killed or maimed! How much adrenaline do you need?
How many losses do you think I could stand? Mom's gone. Dad might as well be."
Rick 's self-satisfied look and tone set Julia's teeth on edge as he answered,
"So, I had no margin for error. I didn't make one. Why are you getting your panties in a twist, anyway? I take risks every day. My career is made up of them!"
"Does that mean that you have to add to them, every chance you get? Rick, I love you.
Alex and Melissa love you. Doesn't that mean anything to you?" Julia resorted to a woman's oldest weapon, tears. But they weren't a subterfuge.
Taken aback, Rick said;
"You weren't supposed to know about it."
"Does that make it any better?"
"Julie, I really am sorry. I didn't think..."
"You never do. You just rush ahead and do it!
"Settle down Julie, I will promise to think more carefully in the future."
"What, for about 30 seconds and do it anyway? Okay, I'll forgive you, this time, but for scaring us, so badly, you're going to have to pay a penalty!"
"Us, what us? I only see one of you."
"Don't be obtuse. It doesn't become you. You scared Kate too."
Rick raised one eyebrow in that expression of sarcastic dis-belief that Julia knew so well.
"Now you're exaggerating! She doesn't know me well enough to be scared for me. "
Switching to a resigned look, Rick said; "
"Okay, I'll pay the penalty. So how much is it?"
"You can't solve this problem by throwing money at it. You're going to have to make amends!" "Oh really, how do you propose I do that?"
"You're going to give up getting plastered with your buddies and chasing tail, tonight.
A young lady wants to dance tonight. You're going to oblige her."
"Like hell I am. You know I don't like formal parties!"
"Like Hell, you're not! You agreed."
"That's a dirty trick, Julie."
"I'm not about being fair, I'm about getting my way, which doesn't happen very often, with you! And don't you dare take it out on Kate!
I want you to smile at her and ask her if you could escort her to the party.
And you WILL be as charming as you know how. Make her believe it's your own idea. Or I will get even. You know that I know how!"
"All right, you win. But remember, pay back is a bitch!"
"I'll risk it. Wear your Evening Mess, Rick, with all your decorations!"
"I'll go, but it will be dress blues with ribbons no medals. They walked back to the group.
"Are you ready for the party?" Del asked. "The Fire Rose will be hot, tonight!"
"You know, Del, I think that I'm going ask Lieutenant Beckett if she'd like an escort to the dinner dance. I'd rather dance than get plastered, anyway!" Rick gave Kate his best smile.
"Kate, is that an open party? If so, I would be honored if you'd allow me to attend as your guest."
Kate returned the smile. "It's not an open party but I'd very happy to have you attend, will you escort me?"
"Thank, you, I'll be the luckiest man in the place."
"Rick, can you be there a little early? I'd like you to be my dinner partner and the seating arrangements need to be set."
"I can be there by 19:15."
"Thank you. Until then."
As Kate, Julia and Jason walked off, Del said;
"What got into you? There will be good booze and available sweet young things at the Fire Rose."
"I know. Julia trapped me into going to the dinner-dance, it wasn't my idea."
"You sure fooled me."
"That was the idea, Lieutenant Beckett, too, I hope.
There's always next Saturday. A second party won't hurt anyone's feelings."
The Officer's Club, Fleet Sector Headquarters, 19:15 hours, 17 August, 2453
Kate looked up from her chat with Lanie as she heard her uncle say;
"Major Castle, welcome to the club. What occasioned this minor miracle?"
"I'm accepting Lieutenant Beckett's kind invitation, Sir."
She walked over. The narrow gold braid outlining his collar marked him as a field grade officer and the Major's insignia glinted in the light.
"Welcome, Rick. Congratulations on the promotion. I heard about it. When did that happen?"
"Thank you, Kate, a little less than a month ago, I was quite surprised by it."
General Frasier chuckled. "He never saw it coming, Kate. It was my Idea and the Emperor's.
But don't let him tell you that he doesn't deserve it. No one else could do the job he's doing. But don't ask what. It's classified."
Kate turned to the chief steward. "Please seat Major Castle next to me. He will be my dinner partner."
"Would you two care to join Marlene and me for a pre-dinner drink?" General Frasier asked. "I would, Uncle Alex."
"As would I. Rick have responded. "What would you like?"
"An Irish Mist please." Kate said
. A "single malt Scotch for me"
The general said to a server;
"An Irish Mist, A Vodka Martini and two single malt scotches on the rocks, please."
"Very good, Sir."
They seated themselves, the gentlemen seeing to the lady's chairs. The drinks came and the general said;
"I'm glad that you made the party, Major but I am surprised that you did. You've dodged several others."
"I never had an invitation from such a lovely lady, before or one who graces the dance floor, so well." Kate blushed a little at the double compliment.
"I couldn't do it without a superb partner, Rick."
"Thank you, Kate, but I owe that skill to my sister. She insisted that I learn to dance, so I wouldn't break things around the house. I was a rather rambunctious teen."
"Where did you grow up?" Kate asked.
"Mostly in San Francisco, not far from the academy, I'm a fleet brat." Kate instantly made the connection. "Fleet Admiral Castle is your father."
"Yes, but can we please not discuss that anymore? My father and I do not get along."
"Oh, I'm sorry."
Rick smiled. "It's all right you couldn't possibly know." "What about you?"
"I'm sort of a half fleet brat. My parents were civilian engineers. They died in an accident. My brother Jake pretty much raised me, with the help of Aunt Marlene."
A deep voice came from behind them. "Did I hear my name being tossed around?"
Kate looked over her shoulder. "Jake, Felicia! Kate stood to hug them.
Rick stood also.
"Jake, I believe that you already know Major Castle. Rick, may I introduce my brother's fiancée, Felicia Grayson? Felicia, Major Rick Castle of the fleet Marine Corps.
"A pleasure Major."
"The pleasure is mine, MS Grayson."
"Major? The last time I saw you, you were a First Lieutenant!" "Fast rise, how'd you arrange that?"
Coldly, Rick said;
"Yes Commodore, it was. But I did not arrange it. But then, a man who has never heard a shot fired in anger would be expected to have such an opinion! Kate, I am sorry but I shall withdraw. It seems that the Commodore has a problem with me."
"Kate looked at Rick. "Rick, please don't go."
"The Commodore is family. I will not be a cause of friction. Good evening."
Marlene whispered to Alex. "Stop him."
General Frasier said, "Major Castle, may I have a word, please?"
"Yes Sir?"
"Let's go over to the bar." "Bartender, bring us two double shots of scotch."
"Kate really needs to enjoy herself. Please don't deprive her of that. Jake can be an asshole sometimes. Will you stay, if I straighten this out?"
"I don't want to cause any friction Sir but I won't stand and be insulted."
"You don't have to but you also shouldn't have implied that Jake is an REMF, he's not. Will you stay for her?"
"If she wants me to, yes Sir but I don't see why she would. He is her brother."
"You've never had a disagreement with Julia?"
"Of course, I have."
"Good. Drink up. This won't take long."
General Frasier walked over to an angry Jake was standing by an obviously distressed Kate. "Jake, come with me. We need to talk! They stepped out of earshot of the women.
"Did you hear what that damned Castle said to me?"
"Jake, what kind of asshole are you? You started that by insulting Major Castle."
"Huh?"
"Have you heard of the battle of Tantalus?"
"Of course, I have. I was even there, with the repair flotilla."
"Then you know how desperate the surface battle was." "Yes. I even heard some ground pounder got the Medal of Honor there."
"Can't you read his ribbons? Major Castle is wearing it! I put him in for it! He's a Major because; Admiral Sevar, The Emperor and I want him to be! He didn't want it!"
"He didn't?"
"No, he didn't. If he'd had his way, he'd be a line company commander on an assault drop ship!
Major Castle was the honor graduate of his class as well as Cadet First Captain.
He's a tactical genius! He could have been safe on the Commandant's staff.
Instead he chose Force Recon and a line regiment! He's also the only non-Centauran to ever be awarded the Shield of the Blue Rose, their equivalent of the Medal of Honor!
The man is brilliant not only tactically but intellectually. Unfortunately, the man has more personal courage than any man should."
"Jesus, Mary and Joseph! I really stepped in it, didn't I?"
"Yes, you did. To top it off, Kate personally invited him tonight. He's her escort. You're going to catch Hell from her too! In fact, here she comes!"
"Jake, if I weren't a lady, I'd be cursing you right out of this club! I may do it anyway!"
"Kate, I'm sorry. I was surprised is all. He's awfully young to be a Major!"
"What, did you think he bought all those medals in the Base Exchange? Jake, you will keep quiet about this, I don't want him to know but I was one of his surgeons at Tantalus.
He was so badly wounded that he almost died on the table, twice! Uncle Alex told me that he got those wounds leading his men and saving one of their lives!
"So, when I get to really relax and enjoy myself, to dance with a man like that who is handsome, a superb dancer and intelligent, along comes Big Jake the wrecker to ruin it for me! "You are going to apologize to him. Right after I do!"
Kate walked over to the bar. "Rick, I'm sorry. My brother's an idiot. Won't you please stay? I want so much to dance with you!"
"I'll stay Kate. I'd really hate to lose the chance to dance with one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen!"
"Do you mean that?"
"Kate, I never say anything that I don't mean." Kate took his arm and led him back to the table.
Jake said;
"Major Castle, My apologies. That's twice I've jumped to a stupid conclusion about you. I promise not to do it again. I should know better."
"Apology accepted, Commodore, I shouldn't have said what I did, either." They shook hands.
Julia and Jason Caldwell entered the club. Kate spotted them as soon as they came through the door. Kate waved and called to them. Felecia Grayson said;
"I recognize her. That's Julia Caldwell! Jake, have you ever seen any of her work?"
"Yes, she's amazing!" "I wonder why she's here."
Felicia was even more amazed when Kate and Julia exchanged hugs. Jake's jaw dropped when Julia hugged and kissed Rick. Kate said,
"Jake, Felicia, I would like you to Meet Julia Caldwell and her husband, Commander Jason Caldwell. Julia, Jason, My brother, Commodore Jacob Beckett and his fiancée Felicia Grayson.
Felicia said;
"I am honored to meet you. MS Caldwell. I have admired your work, many times."
"Thank you, Ms. Grayson. I always enjoy meeting people who appreciate art."
"I too, am pleased to meet you," Jake said. Although I haven't had the time to devote to the arts that I wish I could. Pleased to meet you Commander."
"Thank you, Sir."
Julia said, "We recently opened our gallery here, Commodore. I'd like to extend an invitation to your lady and you to come for a tour. There will be no charge, of course."
"Oh, I'd love that! Jake, please accept." Felicia exclaimed.
"Thank you. When?"
"At your convenience"
"Why don't we all take our seats?" General Frasier said. The rest of the guests should be arriving any minute."
After they were seated, Jake asked;
"Have you known Major Castle, long, Ms. Caldwell?"
"All his life, Commodore, he's my brother."
"He's your brother?"
"Yes, my brother."
The rest of the invited guests arrived within ten minutes, most of them, the crew of the Foxfire.
The stewards set out bottles of wine. General Frasier said to his aide;
"Mr. Vice, the toasts, Please." (Mr. Vice was not a name; it was the traditional title of the military master of ceremonies) Captain Estrada rose. "Gentlemen will rise." "Ladies and Gentlemen, Charge your glasses." The men filled the ladies' glasses, then their own. "Ladies and Gentlemen, To the Commonwealth!"
To the Commonwealth!"
"To the President of the Commonwealth!"
"To the President."
"To the Fleet"
"To the Fleet"
"To the Ladies, God Bless them."
"God Bless them."
After the traditional toasts were given, General Frasier said;
"I propose one more toast. to the crew of the U.S.S. Foxfire. Welcome back."
"Hear! Hear!"
The stewards came around. "Ladies and Gentlemen, you have a choice of Prime rib, Game fowl Centauran Mountain trout or Rock crawler"
Rock crawler was a freshwater crustacean, like a lobster but with a Richer flavor.
"I'll have the Rock Crawler, please." Kate said.
"The prime rib will do nicely, thank you. Rick said."
The food was delicious and Kate was happily surprised at how much she enjoyed the conversation. Rick was urbane and charming. Deftly switching the conversation to art or music any time it turned to anything about him. Julia and Jason kept up a sparkling repartee. Felicia, Marlene and the general contributed also.
Jake didn't say very much, afraid of repeating his earlier faux pas.
Mr. Vice stood.
"Ladies and Gentlemen the dancing is about to start. In a departure from tradition, the first dance of the evening is lady's choice. By special request, it will be a waltz, to the ancient, beautiful Blue Danube."
Kate smiled her dazzling best
. "May I have the pleasure of this dance, Rick?"
Rick returned her smile.
"I shall be honored, Kate."
She moved into his arms as the music began. It seemed to her, that this man was the perfect partner. There was no initial awkwardness, just the smooth blending of two superb dancers. For a few moments, no other couple entered the dance. They all watched in awe. They didn't leave the floor for the next three dances, another waltz, a foxtrot and a tango.
At the break, Kate 's eyes were sparkling and the smile didn't leave her face.
"Would you care for refreshment, Kate?"
"Yes please, another Irish Mist."
"I'll be right back."
Kate watched as he walked to the bar.
"Infatuated, Kate?" Lanie asked.
"Of course, I'm not, what a silly question, Lanie."
'I would be!"
"Well I'm not you!" "It's just that he's a very good dancer and, surprisingly, good at conversation too."
"And He's Hot!" Lanie said.
"He's Smoking." said, Callie Chandler. "I wouldn't mind dancing with him, especially horizontal dancing!"
"CC! watch your mouth, he's my guest."
"Well. I would, that guy is built like a Greek god."
"More like a Celtic God, Lugh of the Spear." Kate said.
"I bet he's got quite a spear!" Callie quipped.
"Callie, you're being vulgar, Kate said. Will you two please get out of here?"
"I bet you never shared your toys, when you were little!" Callie joked.
The two women left, but glanced back to watch and laugh at Kate as she glared at them.
Rick came back with their drinks.
"What are you drinking?" Kate asked.
"It's called a Rusty Nail. One shot of Scotch and one of Drambuie."
"I've had Drambuie but never in a mixed drink, may I taste it?" She took a tiny sip. "That's delicious, but a bit strong."
"It doesn't seem so, to me, but then I've had a few years to acquire the taste."
The music started, again. Jake Beckett came up and said, "May I have this dance, Kate? If you don't mind, Major, I'd like a dance with my sister." Rick started for the bar but was intercepted by Felicia Grayson.
"May I have this dance, Major?"
"Yes Ms. Grayson."
As they danced, Felicia asked, "What is it like, having a galaxy famous artist for a sibling?"
"Like any other sibling, I guess. She doesn't seem any more taken with herself, than any other older sister seems to be. Always trying to run my life, which is what my friend Del says about his sister."
"Is she succeeding?"
"Hardly, if she had her way, I'd be sitting in an office or on somebody's staff."
"That would be a bad thing?"
"For me, it would be. I would be bored to death."
Meanwhile, Jake was saying, "How did you ever come to invite Castle? Didn't I warn you about him?"
"Yes, you did and I'm glad that I ignored you. He's a fantastic dancer and a charming man. You could take lessons from him, on manners. Besides, Uncle Alex introduced us. Do you think that your judgment is better than his? On top of that, I'm just dancing with him, not sleeping with him! This had better be the last time we have a conversation like this, Jake! I'm a grown woman and I make my own decisions."
The dance ended and Jake took Kate back to her table. The next dance was a slow number, a soft dreamlike tune called "Lover's Serenade" Kate moved close, resting her head on Rick 's shoulder. She reveled in the feel of the gentle strength of the arms holding her. She surprised herself, again, when she wondered what it would be like to have this man make love to her. It had been a long time since she'd had a lover.
She wasn't a virgin but she wasn't into casual sex, either. She moved slightly away from him. "Is something wrong, Kate?"
"No..." She moved back, still slightly disturbed to be thinking of Rick like that. After all, she didn't know him that well and that was twice in the last two days. As the dance ended, Rick said, "I'll sit the next dance out. Something is bothering you. I'll go get a drink." Kate was surprised. Most men, as strong and sure of themselves as this one, weren't that perceptive.
Kate sat and stared after Rick as he walked to the bar, ordered another Rusty Nail and leaned against the bar as he drank. A tall, blonde Lieutenant Commander came up.
"Good evening, Lieutenant. May I have this dance?" Kate accepted.
"I'm Commander Leighton, Lieutenant. Bruce Leighton. We'll be working together at the hospital, when you come off leave. I'm a neurosurgeon."
After a few minutes of dancing, Leighton said;
"I'm sure that we'll get along famously, especially as you get to know me."
The too handsome, too sure of his appeal, doctor was just the kind of man who set Kate 's teeth on edge. His right hand was already sliding down her back, to cup her buttocks.
"I'm not at all sure of that, Commander and if you don't remove your hand from where it is, you will need the services of an orthopedic surgeon."
Neither of them had noticed that her nervousness, when he pulled her in close, had been transmitted to an alert Rick Castle.
"How dare you talk to me like that?"
A massive hand clamped down on his arm.
"She dares, because she is a lady in the truest meaning of that word. If you don't release the lady, you'll lose that hand and the arm that goes with it!"
Leighton considered the icy blue eyes of a coldly furious Rick Castle. The doctor winced, but tried bravado.
"What's it to you, Major? Is she your girlfriend?"
"No, she is not. But she is a lady and you're not fit to be around her. Now, do you wish to leave under your own power or on a stretcher?"
"I'll leave but you haven't heard the end of this, Major!"
A feral grin lit Rick 's face.
"I certainly hope not, Commander, I would enjoy continuing the discussion, outside!"
Leighton turned to Kate.
"You will regret this, Lieutenant! I am a power at the hospital!"
Another voice interrupted. "You had better hope that she does not regret it, Commander."
General Frasier was right behind him. "Lieutenant Beckett is my Niece. If you cause any trouble for her, I will first court martial you and then I'll turn Major Castle, here, loose on you.
He likes cowards and bullies even less than I do. Do you know what a Toc Von is Commander?" "Yes, Sir a Gorrok soldier."
"More than that, their top hand to hand combat soldiers and assassins. Major Castle left one dead, with his own knife buried in his chest. Do you really want him after you?"
Leighton scurried out of the club.
"Can you charge him with conduct unbecoming an officer, Sir?"
"I could, but his father, Admiral Leighton could stall the court. What I can do is talk with the hospital commander. He'll be on his way back to Earth, within a week!"
Kate said, "I need a drink, after that!"
"Sit down; I'll get it for you. What would you like?"
"An Irish Mist?"
"Sure. I'll be right back."
Marlene and Felicia came over.
"What happened, Kate?" Marlene asked. Kate quickly explained.
"So, there are still knights out there, even without the shining armor." Marlene said.
Rick returned with Kate 's drink. "Ladies, may I get you something?"
"No, thank you Rick, we were just talking with Kate." Rick sat down.
"Are you all right, Kate? I know something was bothering you a few minutes ago,"
"Nothing is bothering me, now, except figuring out how to repay you."
"Repay me for what?"
"For rescuing me from that insufferable, arrogant ass."
"Rescue? It was more like pest control. It looks like I'm a trouble magnet. Maybe I'd better leave now, before something else happens."
"Oh, please don't. I want to dance some more. Who knows when there will be another chance?" They danced several more times before the evening ended.
At, last, it did end. "Thank you for inviting me, Kate. I have had a wonderful evening."
"So, Have I, Rick. Thank you for everything." She kissed him.
"Good night, Kate. Sleep well." "Good night Rick." Kate surprised herself for the third time. "I'd sleep better, if you really tired me out." She thought
