Brendan crept up the route as stealthily as he could, trying his best to avoid an encounter with a wild Pokemon. He knew that any sort of commotion would cause May to realize his presence behind her, and he was too curious as to what she was doing to let her have the opportunity to stop. He gently stepped through the grass, placing his hand across his nose and mouth to try and stifle his audibly heavy breathing. As he got closer however, he realized it wasn't his breathing that he was hearing, but hers. "What is she doing?", he thought to himself.
He crept around the side of a tree to sneak a glimpse of her, only to find her staring intently into the forested area on the northern end of the route, holding her Pokedex limply in one hand while gently rubbing the front of her skirt with the other. Confused, Brendan tiptoed behind her to see what she was staring at. Once he was close, he peered over her shoulder into the forest to find her staring at two Zigzagoons mating a ways into the underbrush, as oblivious of May's presence as she was of Brendan's. He let out an audible gasp upon the realization of what she was doing, which led her to gasp loudly and whip around to face him.
"W-Wh-What do you think you're doing?", she exclaimed loudly at him, her face beginning to turn red in embarrassment. The sound of frantic rustling in the forest punctuated her statement as the two Zigzagoons ran away in fear. Brendan, now entirely bewildered, retorted with, "What are YOU doing? Why were you staring at those Zigzagoon?". May let out a couple stammers in protest, trying to come up with a hasty excuse, before an indignant look spread across her face and she began looking sheepishly towards the ground. "I was, um... doing fieldwork, and um...". Her statement quickly trailed off. "Were you...", Brendan began awkwardly before May quickly interjected, "Listen, whatever you do this has to stay between us, okay? I confess, I... I saw those Zigzagoon going at each other, and I just... I couldn't help myself... But its not my fault, okay?! You came barging into my room with that giant cock of yours while I'm getting dressed, and I didnt even have time to relieve myself and I just-". She quickly stopped herself upon realizing what she was saying and embarrasedly turned her back to Brendan, who at this point was stunned speechless. "I... I'm sorry, I... I didnt know..." He stammered, trying to remedy the situation. She sheepishly turned back around to face him. "Please, please promise me that this stays between us, okay? I know the idea of getting off to Pokemon is sick, but...". Brendan nodded his head, "I won't tell anyone, I promise". She slowly nodded her head in acknowledgement and turned back around, sitting on the ground and staring blankly out into the forest.
After a moment of awkwardly looking around, he went over and sat beside May. "So, um... Have you ever, um...", he said, his own face quickly beginning to form an awkward blush, "Is this the... first time you've done something like that?". She quickly looked away from him upon realizing what he asked her, remaining silent for a minute longer before responding, "No... No, it's not... I've been really close to Pokemon my entire life, and theres been a few times where I've... I've gotten off to the thought of them... but this is the first time I've actually seen two live Pokemon having sex, and I... I just couldn't help myself... The way they were going at each other, it just filled me with such an intense, burning feeling and I... I didnt even realize what I was doing until you caught me...". Brendan became somewhat entranced by her description, recalling the dream he had had a few hours prior.
"Brendan, I should probably tell you something... When you walked in on me getting dressed earlier on accident? Well... it wasn't an accident... I knew you were going to be coming over so I made it look like I had no idea you walked in on me... I wanted you to see me, I wanted to see the look on your face when you saw my body..." Brendan quickly snapped back to reality upon realizing what she had just said. "You... You did? But why?". She let out a sigh and turned towards him a bit more, "I've lived in Littleroot my entire life, being stuck in this dead town with my boring father and his boring work. I've never gotten the chance to meet anybody besides my dads colleagues. You're the first boy I've ever had in my room, so... I thought I'd take the chance...". Brendan felt his face get warmer as what felt like all the blood in his body rush to his head.
"So...", she continued while looking up into Brendan's eyes, "Did you... Did you like what you saw?". His eyes widened even more as he nodded his head sheepishly, prompting a smile from May. "Gosh, I never would have expected the son of Norman to be this cute and shy~". He turned his eyes away in embarrassment while she looked him up and down, finally catching sight of the brand new Pokeball at his belt. "Oh, no way. Dad finally gave you a Pokemon? Sweet!", she exclaimed. He took a moment to process her statement before quickly grabbing the ball at his belt and throwing it out, releasing the Pokemon inside in a blinding flash of light. Kappa emerged from her ball, looking bright and cheerful. "Kip kip!", she exclaimed in delight upon seeing her trainer. "Hey Kappa, this is May. May, this is Kappa". She smiled and bent down to give Kappa a pat on the head, which she appreciated greatly. "Awww, she's so cute! You picked wisely, that's for sure".
He smiled at both of them before standing up slowly. "Do you have a Pokemon too?" He asked her, to which she responded by nodding and pulling out her own Pokeball. She threw it out and released her own Pokemon, which shortly became apparent as a small, green, lizardlike creature with a stick in its mouth. "Treee...", It colloquially proclaimed upon seeing its trainer. "Brendan and Kappa, meet Phi", she announced to the both of them as her Pokemon looked them both over with indifference. "He looks strong, is he a grass type?". She nodded, "Yeah but he doesn't know any grass moves yet. Say, you wanna have a Pokemon battle, Brendan?". He raised his eyebrows as he mulled over the idea, "Eh, I don't know, Kappa doesn't have much experience yet-". "And thats why is important to start training them as soon as possible", she quickly cut him off, "Phi, use Tackle!"
Brendan hardly had enough time to process the situation before May's Treecko launched itself into his Pokemon. "Yes, direct hit!", She exclaimed. Brendan quickly regained his bearings, "Kappa, use Growl!". The water pokemon shrugged off the blow and let out a menacing warning towards the opposing Pokemon, rendering it less powerful. He made an excited grin at his opponent, who scowled back at him and commanded her Pokemon to repeat the attack. The two went back and forth for a while, each striking the other with sheer blunt force, until eventually the Treecko's strength gave out.
The Mudkip gave a victorious cry as its opponent fell to the ground. May begrudgingly returned her now unconscious Pokemon to its ball as Brendan did the same. "Not bad, for your first real fight", she said to him with a bittersweet smile, "I can see now why my dad had his eye on you. You just got your Pokemon today and it looks like you've already gained her trust. Being able to befriend Pokemon that quickly is a sure sign of an excellent trainer". He smiled a bit and looked up at her with pride. "Dont sell yourself short, you put up one hell of a fight".
She smiled back at him before belting her Pokeball and sauntering over to him, digging in the pocket of her bag as she walked. "Now, trainer rules state that the loser gives a prize to the winner. Normally in unofficial matches it's common to give more… intangible prizes", she said while placing a finger on his chest and slowly tracing it downward, "But I'm afraid it's time for me to be heading back to my dad's lab, so here". She quickly grabbed Brendans hand and placed a few dollars into it before closing it back up. "Don't spend it all at once, okay cutie?", she said as he began to blush profusely.
He quickly nodded and stuffed the money into his pocket. "Come on, you should tell my dad that you won your first trainer battle, I'm sure he'll be excited!". She quickly ran off in the direction of Littleroot Town, inciting Brendan to follow close behind. The two raced each other on the way, bounding across ledges and dodging the sparse citizens of Oldale Town along the way. Eventually, the two of them made it back to Birch's lab, with May winning their competition and Brendan leaning against the side of the building to catch his breath. "I guess that puts us one to one, huh?", she said to him with a smirk on her face as she strolled into her father's lab. He rolled his eyes as he continued, trying his best to quell the aching of his lungs.
When he eventually went inside the lab, He found May and Birch having a conversation in the middle of the room, while his assistant worked quietly off to the side. He went up to the two of them to join the conversation, provoking a look of glee from the professor. "Brendan! May tells me you beat her on the first try. Excellent work!", he exclaimed while May stood behind him raising her eyebrows at Brendan. "May has been helping me with my research for a long time, and she already has an extensive history as a trainer! Beating her is no small feat, I'll say!". Brendan looked down bashfully, "I can't take all the credit, Kappa did most of the work". The professor chuckled and nodded a bit. "Here Brendan, I've got something here that I'd like you to have, just give me one moment". He quickly turned around and started rummaging through the clutter on his desk for a moment before turning around and producing a small red device.
"Brendan, this is a Pokedex. Its a device that records the information of any Pokemon you come across. I got it for my research, but I think it would do more good in your hands than mine". Brendan took the Pokedex from him and looked it over. "Wow, you have your own Pokedex, just like me!", May exclaimed, "Here, I've got something for you too". She handed him a few empty Pokeballs, "Your Mudkip is strong, but you're gonna want to catch some more Pokemon to round out your team". Brendan nodded as he accepted them and stowed them in his backpack.
"Alright kids, I'm sure the two of you are ready to get started on your journeys, but it's getting rather late and I'm sure your mothers are probably expecting you home for dinner. May, you go on ahead, I've got some paperwork to finish up before I head home". The two of them nodded at Birch before heading out of the laboratory. "Have a good night Brendan, it was good to finally meet you!", He called after Brendan as he left the building. As soon as they walked out the door, the smile dropped from Birch's face as he heaved a sigh and sat back down at his desk. He opened a drawer and fished around for a moment, eventually pulling out a bottle of rum and taking a hefty swing out of the bottle. "Are you okay, sir?", his assistant asked worriedly. Birch waved his hand in his direction and spoke solemnly, "Leave me be, I'll be fine soon enough". He took another slug of his rum before continuing, "I just gave away a high tech research device and a rare starter pokemon to a kid I barely know because his daddy is a gym leader… Now he's gonna ramble across Hoenn, doing the job I've wanted to do for years…", another pause as he gulps down his drink, "Arceus knows he'll be having more fun than I'll ever see…".
He puts the bottle down and rests his head on a stack of papers. "Sir', his assistant began, "You should head home and spend some time with your family, I'll finish up the papers". Birch slowly raised his head to look up at his assistant. "Your daughter is going off to start her journey as a trainer tomorrow morning, sir. The least I can do is let you spend another night with her before she goes off". He gave a slight smile as he rose up from his desk, "I appreciate that. You sure you'll be okay here for the night?". The assistant rolled his eyes and nodded, causing Birch to sigh and pensively head for the door. "Alright, have a good night, and make sure you lock the place up when you're done", he said as he left the building. He took a look at the Hoenn sky, now cast in the brilliant hues of sunset, before slowly making his way to his house.
