"Sammy. You can't possibly be this naive. With our mother?"
"What do you mean?" Sam said, turning defensive as she often did whenever anyone suggested there were any blocks she hadn't been around a time or two.
The trouble was, Melanie knew her too well.
"Tell me what you did, again."
"I stuck my tongue in Freddie's ear." Sam shifted uncomfortably, waiting for Melanie to say something at the other end of the phone, but she didn't. Her silence had "tah – dah!" written all over it.
Finally Sam couldn't bear it so she said, "What? I wanted it to annoy him, and it did."
Now the silence was broken by Melanie's delighted peals of laughter until she got herself under enough control to gasp out, "Sam, you don't stick your tongue in a boy's ear to annoy him, you do it to turn him on!"
"What?" The dismay in Sam's voice was so genuine it set Melanie off laughing again until she said
"Yup! If you'd looked down at his pants I bet you'dve noticed - "
"Aaaah! Gross!"
"...and I also bet you don't really think it's gross. I bet you're pleased to think you might have excited him."
"You'd lose that bet, Puckett. Freddie doesn't think of me like that." No matter how much I...
"You may not think so, Puckett, but I have receipts. I know you turn him on."
"What do you mean?"
"Remember, I kinda made out with him?"
Sam had been blushing bright red and her cheeks were hot, but suddenly her voice hit the bottom of the thermometer. "Yeah..."
"Well we didn't talk much about it 'cause I knew it was weirding you out, don't even bother to deny it. What I didn't tell you is, we'd been dancing."
"So?"
"Slow dancing."
"What?" This time Sam's voice dropped out the bottom of the thermometer and shattered on the floor of her bedroom.
"He was holding me close...you know what I'm talking about."
"Oh, god. So, great. That's supposed to mean he -"
"Sam. He thought I was you."
Thanks for reading and I'll see you in the next chapter...Sorry this one's so short, but the next one should make up for it. It's already almost twice as long as this and I don't think it's half done yet. It's also moving into the time of "the Seddie arc" so as you might imagine, it's fertile soil.
